"It could be the ultimate test of human endurance: Three British explorers are risking their lives in subzero temperatures to measure the melting Arctic ice cap."
Because we all know that ice melts at an alarming rate at -40.
At least the is no mention of kayaks or canoes to cross the vast expanses of open water like that team a few years ago. They only lost a few toes before they were rescued.
It is so amazing that these people make hypotheses based on a warm year and ignore the three colder years we have had since their original data.
It is amazing how CNN can write that headline with a straight face. That is what happens when the media has an agenda and need to warp the news to fit that agenda.
I like the scary ice breaking up story. It is a normal thing.
Notice they do not mention 2008 and the rebound up 500Ksqkm at the minimum, only the OMG we are so Dead year of 2007.
That was then this is now. Next there is no baseline for what they are measuring so unless they plan on heading up evey year this is a waste of time and a snapshot over a very narrow slice of ice.
CNN obviously understands the difference between weather and climate. When you grasp that difference, you can verbalize stunning contradictions with a straight face.
All of this would be ironically comical if it were not for the fact that these idiots are endangering others' lives. A friend of mine is a pilot flying Twin Otters out of Resolute Bay. He was part of a crew that were called in to rescue one of the female "adventurers" when she decided that at -48C she had seen enough "global warming" and wanted out. The crews risked their own lives to lift her off the sea ice. Cudos to them, an "Arctic Idiocy" award to her.
Remember the clown who was going to paddle his kayak to the North Pole last year after all the ice had melted? He had to be rescued, too.
Why don't we just leave them all to the polar bears?
"We nearly froze to death trying to locate the shrinking, melting ice caps. Everywhere was snow and ice. But we had to be rescued by helicopter because we were being trailed by several polar bears, which we thought endangered but were unfortunately quite plentiful".
Watts has this one up as well. They're using the ice breakup date (getting earlier) as a proxy for climate change, all the while completely ignoring the fact that the ice thickness has actually been increasing year over year....
People, the difference between weather and climate is this, keep it straight: Cold is weather, warm is climate. It is that simple. Climate is newsworthy, weather is not.
JMD: "It is amazing how CNN can write that headline with a straight face. That is what happens when the media has an agenda and need to warp the news to fit that agenda."
Anyone who watches CNN for more than a few minutes (and MSNBC -- and Fox too, I'm afraid) and sees the quality of the minds of many of the people who staff those networks can easily imagine someone writing this headline without a trace of an agenda. Unless stupidity is an agenda.
It's also interesting how these clods manage to avoid explaining how the Arctic was much warmer 1000 years ago during the MWP, making their 125,000 year statement pure drivel. I await with breathless anticipation their explanation for Norse pastures under Greenland glaciers.
"Battling temperatures as cold as minus 40 degrees" -- like the temperatures in which I used to go to school in northern Quebec and like those in which I spent a month at a time on winter exercises in the army. This maudlin heroic-greens-behaving-stupidly nonsense is really getting out of hand. Never mind the moronic headline. What's next, "Brain dead pseudo scientist battles desert heat to study frostbite"? Puleeeese!
Only a greenie could juxtapose "subzero temperatures" and "melting Arctic ice cap" in the same sentence and neither notice the logical incongruity or break down laughing.
See what happens when you bing drink? They collected over 4 million dollars to do this when they could have got the Inuit to do it for a lot less.
One pass will only give them a base line... doesn't the U.S. navy have all this data?
I heard on CBC's ideas a piece about research done in the Beaufort sea. The fellow they were talking to said something that I have been saying for years. He said that the thicker the ice, the more heat was kept in the water. Which of course leads to global warming. What they missed was the flip side. Where the thinner the ice, the more energy is radiated space ward....Contributing to global cooling.
'The scientific findings will be presented at the United Nations Climate Change Conference of Parties in Copenhagen, Denmark, in December. There, an international committee of scientists, heads of state and policymakers will gather to assess the Kyoto Protocol.'
sounds to me that they already have concluded what the 'scientific findings ' will be.
If you want have a laugh, go to Google, enter Weather-Environment Canada." Click on the map of "Nunavut," a more detailed map will come up. Then click on "Eureka Station." Today, at 11:12 AM CST, temp is -44C. Does ice melt at minus 44?? I doubt it. The low in the last 24 hrs was -46.4C. Like the guy who drives the tow truck would say. "That's f*$%?+& cold!!"
PS. Attention greenies! Present Temperature at South pole is -44C. Don't forget, the South Pole's distance to the Sun is inversed to the N. Pole's. Theoretically--it's summer over there.
Despite the technological advances of the 20th century, we still only have estimates of the thickness of the sea ice cover on the Arctic Ocean. Travelling across the sea ice, the Catlin Arctic Survey team will take precise measurements of its thickness and density. This will enable the programme’s Science Partners to determine, with a greater degree of accuracy, how long the sea ice will remain. Currently, its predicted meltdown date is anywhere between four and a hundred years from now.
Didn't Gore, you know the one with Pulitzer Prize, say that all the ice would gone in ten years every year since he began saying the ice would be gone in ten years?
These cats say anywhere from 100 to 400 years from now, wow that's some game of pin the tail on the donkey!
I just got back from my stint working in the Arctic. -73C with the windchill. David Suzuki's name came up a few times.

Words to describe the greenie's lunacy fail me sometimes.
However, that site is indeed an unintended comedy site of the brain dead, love the one that says that the polar bears are dying of extreme heat... huh? But I thought they were drowning at extreme rates, or dying of exhaustion from too much swimming from ice flow to ice flow?
So will it be back to harassing the seal hunters next year? Not as cold and easy to be rescued from attacking seal cubs.

There a little like the Liberals, only the Liberals are praying for a recession to turn into a depression and these 3 guys are hoping the ice melts and the greenies are praying that the world is hit with heat waves .FOR WHAT???To get a hold of your tax dollar that's what. And who in hell is going to pay for the rescue in 3 days.?We are.

I think it'd be more appropriate to suggest that soldiers battle hardship while scientists endure hardship.
IMO, CNN's been at war for far too long.
for sure . a complete waste of irony.
Wonder if they bought carbon credits for their helicopter rescue ?

Yeah, I was wondering when these clowns were going to be out there.
Saw one of them on the dumb tube last fall but hadn't heard anything since.
Good luck to them, I'm sure they've had experience fudging the data to keep the grant money flowing.

Well, here's the results of my scientific experiment:

Sub-zero temperatures, melting ice in the same sentence, where did these people go to school? I don't think any more needs to be said.
The truely scary part of this is that about half the population wouldn't get the contradiction.

If the wish for these loons to die from exposure is too politically incorrect, how about the loss of a couple of fingers or toes?
Surely a small price to pay to "prove" a hypothesis, no?
And don't forget that massive chunk of ice the size of California they somehow "forgot" to include in their measurements.
