At least the is no mention of kayaks or canoes to cross the vast expanses of open water like that team a few years ago. They only lost a few toes before they were rescued.

That was then this is now. Next there is no baseline for what they are measuring so unless they plan on heading up evey year this is a waste of time and a snapshot over a very narrow slice of ice.

CNN obviously understands the difference between weather and climate. When you grasp that difference, you can verbalize stunning contradictions with a straight face.

All of this would be ironically comical if it were not for the fact that these idiots are endangering others' lives. A friend of mine is a pilot flying Twin Otters out of Resolute Bay. He was part of a crew that were called in to rescue one of the female "adventurers" when she decided that at -48C she had seen enough "global warming" and wanted out. The crews risked their own lives to lift her off the sea ice. Cudos to them, an "Arctic Idiocy" award to her.

Remember the clown who was going to paddle his kayak to the North Pole last year after all the ice had melted? He had to be rescued, too.

People, the difference between weather and climate is this, keep it straight: Cold is weather, warm is climate. It is that simple. Climate is newsworthy, weather is not.

I think it'd be more appropriate to suggest that soldiers battle hardship while scientists endure hardship.

Anyone who watches CNN for more than a few minutes (and MSNBC -- and Fox too, I'm afraid) and sees the quality of the minds of many of the people who staff those networks can easily imagine someone writing this headline without a trace of an agenda. Unless stupidity is an agenda.

I heard on CBC's ideas a piece about research done in the Beaufort sea. The fellow they were talking to said something that I have been saying for years. He said that the thicker the ice, the more heat was kept in the water. Which of course leads to global warming. What they missed was the flip side. Where the thinner the ice, the more energy is radiated space ward....Contributing to global cooling.

Sub-zero temperatures, melting ice in the same sentence, where did these people go to school? I don't think any more needs to be said.

The truely scary part of this is that about half the population wouldn't get the contradiction.

Today, at 11:12 AM CST, temp is -44C. Does ice melt at minus 44?? I doubt it. The low in the last 24 hrs was -46.4C. Like the guy who drives the tow truck would say. "That's f*$%?+& cold!!"
