Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your delectation and pursuant to our Monday night jazz show, here are Charlie Rouse and his quintet, featuring Blue Mitchell, Art Taylor, Walter Bishop, and Earl May performing Pretty Strange (5:21). I didn't know that Charlie and Blue had played together before! Cool, man. Mmm, mmm, this is yummy good.
Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

Well, let's kick off the evening with some heartening news. A magazine called World Finance recently produced a list of the 50 safest banks in the world. All of Canada's big 5 made it, with the Royal ranked number 10. (Banks are ranked by market cap, not safety or quality.) Out of the 3300 banks in the USA, only 3 made the list, and none were in the top 10. Hope the news that Canada's banks are strong helps some of you rest easier tonight.
Vitruvius: How you broadcast from the future?
Vitruvius: Great selection -- but too bad Blue wasn't playing with Charlie on that one. He was one of the great jazz trumpeters of his time, taken from us much too early.
American radio show host Dennis Prager spoke of something today that I wanted to throw at all of you for feedback. Paraphrasing, this is what he said:
"The Left has never been spoken about Creating Wealth, the Left is only focused on Creating Equality."
I thought about this some and the only exception I could think of is the NDP gov't in Manitoba. I haven't lived there in some time so perhaps it's the case that their policies are not Left-centered in practice?
Anyhow, in the bigger picture, what do you think of Prager's statement?

WHERE DID THE WHITE MAN GO WRONG? TOUGH TO ARGUE WITH THIS ONE . .
Indian Chief 'Two Eagles' was asked by a white US. government official, 'You have observed the white man for 90 years. You've seen his wars and his technological advances. You've seen his progress, and the damage he's done.'
The Chief nodded in agreement.
The official continued, 'Considering all these events, in your opinion, where did the white man go wrong?'
The Chief stared at the government official for over a minute and then calmly replied:
'When white man find land, Indians running it, no taxes, no debt, plenty buffalo, plenty beaver, clean water. Women did all the work, Medicine man free. Indian man spend all day hunting and fishing; all night having sex.'
Then the chief leaned back and smiled 'Only white man dumb enough to think he could improve system like that.'

It's too late, Kevin, we've already kicked off with some very heartening news, namely, that things are, as they have always been, Pretty Strange. Also, agreed, MJ, Blue wasn't featured in that tune, but apparently he was in the quintet, according to that album cover, which was what I was trying to say that I did not know before: sorry I wasn't more clear. Still, I did want to single out that Rouse work: rather a fine piece in my opinion. Wait, wait, wait a minute, sorry folks, I forgot, the sky is falling. Pardon my interruption.
From the experience that the people of British Columbia have had with two NDP administrations and one Liberal one I think they can speak with some authority.
An example: in 1993 our mining exploration revenues were in the area of $700 million. By the end of the last NDP government, they were around $30 million. The Liberal Government has been a facilitator of business and we have all benefited.
My only complaint is that their social policies are largely left Liberal. The Great Bear Rain Forest, carbon tax (a tax increase) and spending like there's no tomorrow, family law skulduggery, soft on crime, name but a few areas of contention with me.
Tough to Argue? Bullshit, Tenebris. Wheel, smelting,
Maxwell, and antibiotics. Don't be silly, old chap. ;-)
Robert W - the left is about creating inequality. Not equality.
The Left asserts that the knowledge of 'How to live in the Best Way' exists; it is accessible to an Elite, a Chosen Set. These people have The Knowledge of The Best Way To Live. This knowledge is not found in the majority of people. Only these Few have it - They are defined as Guardians or Rulers.
The fascinating thing is that this perspective is not modern. It is not industrial. It is pre-industrial. The perspective of the Left is very much the mindset of 18th and 19th c Europe.
The class structure of pre-modern Europe consisted of an elite Landed Gentry...the people whose wealth (knowledge) wasn't made by themselves but was inherited from ancestors. Then, there was the up-and-coming mercantile merchant class - the businessmen. These people were sneered at and derided by the Landed Gentry, who scorned anyone having to 'make money' with their own work.
And..the rest were peasants, farmers, workers.
This pre-modern class elitism is exactly what is found in our modern Left. Our modern left are similar to the Landed Gentry. Their 'wealth' or knowledge isn't self-made; they are found in the universities, in the civil service...They certainly aren't in 'business'..which is condemned.
Notice how Obama condems the business and manufacturing peoples as based on 'greed'. That's such an 19th c statement..made by an elitist!
The Landed Gentry of the 18th c, who are now the modern Leftists, sneer at anyone who 'makes wealth' or 'makes knowledge'. They deride the investors, or the businessman, or industrialists, or the bankers. These people, who make the wealth - they are 'corrupt'. They merely make wealth; they are greedy.
The worker class, are the people who work for wages.
The Left, the modern Landed Gentry, the modern Guardians, do NOT consider the merchant and business class as their equal! After all, merchants and businessmen are 'nouveau riche', and are 'wealthy' out of greed..not out of ancestry and 'noblesse oblige'.
And they consider the workers..ignorant and hapless..beer and popcorn victims of the wealthy businessmen.
The agenda of the Landed Gentry, the Left, is not to enable equality, for they reject equality. It is to reduce the power of the people who make wealth - the industrialists, the businessmen. And, in this era of voting power, they'll give this wealth..first, to themselves (they'll always have high salaries and benefits and perks in office..Recall Pelosi's perks and plane rides)...and second..to the peasants..to keep them passive and meek.
ET, Thank YOU!!! I will pass onto Prager and see if he responds on-air.
In point of fact, I think he meant the rhetoric or promises of the Left, whereas you're talking about their Reality.
Moral Victory for Islamists at the UN.
Watch for the NDP to be adopting this into their talking points by week's end!
How much money does Canada waste ... errr send to the UN each year?!?
The National Post, in an otherwise nice profile of Jason Kenney, refers to the Canadian Arab Congress as "arguably anti-Semitic." (Emphasis mine.)
I agree that the Post is probably the best of a truly awful MSM lot, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't call it out when it publishes crap lines like this.

Canadian Arab Federation. My bad.
I came across this evidence of the high quality of CBC reporting. http://icelandweatherreport.com/ Note the post from 27 March.
"How much money does Canada waste ... errr send to the UN each year?!?" -- I hope less than we used to under Chretien. Under the previous Liberal government a great deal of money was channeled through the U.N., a pet agency of our Liberal government.
An example was money raised for the Tsunami victims. Funding could have been given to the Red Cross or charitable agency, but instead it was sent to the U.N. Since this was not too long after the U.N. was being scrutinized for creaming off Oil for Food dollars, I think there is a legitimate question about whether or not they were the best agency to distribute our dollars. I don't believe there was any request for the dollars to be accounted for, so heaven knows where they went.
Liz, you got me curious so I checked the home page of the CAF. Their lead story is this:
"ARAB CANADIANS CALL UPON PRIME MINISTER HARPER TO RESTRAIN MINISTER JASON KENNEY"
The title itself is the first lie. Their organization might want to restrain Kenney but they don't speak for all Arab Canadians.
They go onto say that they oppose all forms of racism. Yet they were a key part of assembling the "protest" rallies in Canada a few months ago that we all saw the videos of. Those were nothing but "Hate Juice" [sic] rallies in disguise.
I always thought Angie Harmon was beautiful, but now she's my new hero!!!
Robert W @ 1:13......Damn....why can't there be more like her instead of "women" like Oprah,Behar,Walters,Pelosi, etc?!?!?!
Linda's question reminded me of all the "trusts" that the Lieberal govenment created and funnelled money in to escape the Auditor General. Whatever happened to that money laundering scheme? This was even before adscam.

"Bogeymen of the C02 hoax losing ground
By Dr. Tim Ball
You can discover what your enemy fears most by observing the means he uses to frighten you. Eric Hoffer
James Hansen, head of NASA Goddard Institute of Space Studies (GISS), and Andrew Weaver, lead author of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Reports, made statements clearly designed to frighten people.
Both men are politically active in climate change and at the forefront of the attempt to convince the world that CO2 is a problem. Their remarks are intended to scare people by threatening impending doom – nothing new - except there is increasing urgency and fear because their message is failing. As Andrew Weaver summarized, ”All those fossil fuel emissions need to be eliminated. And we must do so quickly if we are to have any chance of stabilizing the climate and maintaining human civilization as we know it.”
Hansen increases urgency for action claiming we are on the verge of a tipping point, defined as follows. “Tipping points can occur during climate change when the climate reaches a state such that strong amplifying feedbacks are activated by only moderate additional warming.”
We’re reaching a tipping point, but it’s not the one Hansen anticipates. We’re close to the point where the public and politicians realize they have been totally deceived about the nature and cause of climate change. Even before a shift to concern about the economy polls showed a growing shift in public opinion."

"Pricey ads signed by scientists slam Obama's climate change talk
More than 100 scientists — including a number of Canadian government scientists and university professors — have signed a full-page newspaper ad denouncing U.S. President Barack Obama's remarks about climate change last November as "untrue."
"The Cato Institute ad takes issue with the following statement, made by U.S. President Barack Obama on Nov. 19, 2008:
"Few challenges facing America and the world are more urgent than combating climate change. The science is beyond dispute and the facts are clear."
"Mr. President , your characterization of the scientific facts regarding climate change and the degree of certainty informing the scientific debate is simply incorrect," said the ads paid for by the Cato Institute that ran Monday in the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Washington Times, the Chicago Tribune and the Los Angeles Times. The ads cite evidence, referenced in four scientific papers, that the climate is not changing significantly."
"Among the Canadians who signed the ad were:
* Ian Clark, professor of Earth Sciences, University of Ottawa.
* Paul Copper, Laurentian University (Emeritus).
* Susan Crockford, University of Victoria.
* Christopher Essex, University of Western Ontario.
* Neil Hutton, past president, Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists.

"James Hansen sets the record straight on the New York Times article 'The Civil Heretic'
Dr. James E. Hansen, head of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York and an adviser to Al Gore’s film, “An Inconvenient Truth,” is quoted and referred to several times in the New York Times article "The Civil Heretic - Freeman Dyson - Profile" - by Nicholas Dawidoff, March 29, 2009, New York Times, page MM32 and in the New York Times Magazine, March 25, 2009.
Dr. Hansen sent his response to the article to those who have subscribed to his e-mail commentaries the day before its publication in the Sunday New York Times. He has given me permission to convey his clarification in its entirety:
New York Times Magazine
Tomorrow’s NY Times Magazine article (The Civil Heretic) on Freeman Dyson includes an unfortunate quote from me that may appear to be disparaging and ad hominem (something about bigger fish to fry). It was a quick response to a reporter* who had been doggedly pursuing me for an interview that I did not want to give. I accept responsibility for the sloppy wording and I will apologize to Freeman, who deserves much respect.
You might guess (correctly) that I was referring to the fact that contrarians are not the real problem – it is the vested interests who take advantage of the existence of contrarians.
There is nothing wrong with having contrarian views, even from those who have little relevant expertise – indeed, good science continually questions assumptions and conclusions. But the government needs to get its advice from the most authoritative sources, not from magazine articles. In the United States the most authoritative source of information would be the National Academy of Sciences.
The fact that the current administration in the United States has not asked for such advice, when combined with continued emanations about “cap and trade,” should be a source of great concern. What I learned in visiting other countries is that most governments do not want to hear from their equivalent scientific bodies, probably because they fear the advice will be “stop building coal plants now!” These governments are all guilty of greenwash, pretending that they are dealing with the climate problem via “goals” and “caps”, while they continue to build coal plants and even investigate unconventional fossil fuels and coal-to-liquids.
I will send out something (“Worshiping the Temple of Doom”) on cap-and-trade soon. It is incredible how governments resist the obvious (maybe not so incredible when lobbying budgets are examined, along with Washington’s revolving doors). This is not rocket science. If we want to move toward energy independence and solve the climate problem, we need to stop subsidizing fossil fuels with the public’s money and instead place a price on carbon emissions."

Wagoner will get 20 million retirement. There is talk he cannot get it because of the feds but it is not a bonus. If they break this contract they also have to break all the pensions. Eat crow O.
Right, speedy - as noted in Hot Air:
"Wagoner’s resignation does not mean that he will leave the company immediately. He will continue to draw his $1 annual salary, because if he leaves the company he is entitled to a multimillion-dollar pension that the government does not want to pay, a source familiar with the matter said.
ABC didn’t report it as a “severance package,” and GM is on the hook to pay his already-negotiated retirement benefits — unless they can clear them in a bankruptcy proceeding (which is doubtful for pensions), but which will also void the union’s contracts at the same time. If he’s resigning, they’re going to have to pay those benefits, and probably sooner rather than later, and the White House can’t do anything about it."
So, what is Obama's agenda - does he have one that is clear to him or the public?
What is the real cause of GM's collapse? The unions, the unions, the unions - and Obama is a bosum friend of the unions, so he won't acknowledge this. Instead, like all leftists, who consider themselves 'landed gentry' and wise, he'll blame the 'mercantile class', the upstart peoples engaged in 'trade'. And 'trade' and 'manufacturing' is something all blue blood gentry sneer at.
The unions? They are parasites and have leeched on to industries and sucked all life from them.
They've transformed manufacturing and industrial production from its original focus on the product and the consumer..to a focus only on the well-being of the employee. So, rather than the profits being re-invested in research for better products, new machinery, upgrades and better plants..the money was taken out of the industrial acts, out of manufacturing and instead spent on higher and higher and higher wages, benefits paid by the company, and enormous pensions for earlier and earlier and longer...retirements. This left no money for the product. And it is the product which makes profit. Only the product. Not the worker.
The unions have led to the demise of industrialism in the US; it is their greed, their parasitic attack on the product that have led to this.
J.E. Dyer, The Mighty Middle
Something to keep in mind, as we survey the proto-Bolshevist approach of the Obama administration to taking over the civil government and means of production in the United States, is that what Obama and his cohort are doing has never been tried before in a nation with a huge, independent, self-sustaining middle class...

"False Hope Trumps Good Sense
America’s Eyes Wide Shut!
By JB Williams Monday, March 30, 2009
As each day of the new administration passes, the American taxpayer is driven deeper in debt, American savings, investment and retirement accounts lose more value, Washington DC leftists seize more control over private industries and private assets, and today, the Obama administration is directly engaged in the day to day management of multiple private corporations and industries. Still, the average American has allowed a false sense of hope to trump simple common sense, which is clearly no longer common in America.
Obamanation Now Running GM, Chrysler and Banks
CNN reports Obama aides flunk GM and Chrysler. Having already given a failing grade to the US banking industry, and using trillions in new American taxpayer debt to purchase federal controlling interest in several of the nations biggest financial institutions, Obamanation is now dictating employment and payroll policy for the financial sector.
Obamanation is seizing control of America’s largest manufacturing industry, the auto industry, firing GM CEO Rick Wagoner and forcing a merger between Chrysler and Fiat. Read Obama Forces Out GM CEO Wagoner.
Resident Obama steps to the White House microphone to announce that he is now running the auto industry, for the greater common good of the union employee, blaming the failure of capitalism, completely ignoring decades of labor union destruction of America’s competitive edge over foreign manufacturers.
“We think we can have a successful U.S. auto industry. But it’s got to be one that’s realistically designed to weather this storm and to emerge—at the other end—much more lean, mean and competitive than it currently is,” Obama said, as if the acting CEO of the US auto industry.
Though they refused immediate additional “bailout funds,” Resident Obama placed the American taxpayer as the new guarantor of all auto industry product warrantees in an effort to promote the sale of union labor autos. However, the American taxpayer too, has already been bankrupted by the fed. They are in no position to guarantee all that Obama is committing them to.
