Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your delectation and pursuant to our Sunday night classical music show, here are the noted basso profundo Vladimir Miller and the choir of the Valaam Monastery (a stauropegic Orthodox monastery in Karelia, located on the largest island in Lake Ladoga, the largest lake in Europe), performing Do Not Reject Me In Old Age (6:38).

GM = Government Motors

Sorry about double post, finger twitch.
Without attributing motives to the Owe let's be honest here; if GM doesn't want government intervention in their operations they shouldn't ask for government money. I'm all in favour of ownership but when its not your money your asking for then the owner of the money gets to call the shots.
BTW great selection of music Vitruvius. I've long been a fan of Russian Orthodox Christian music. Somehow it seems to resonate with my soul even though I can't understand a word of what they are singing.
Joe I agree when they take your money you have a say. If you buy stock. If you are throwing money in to save jobs I see it differently. I will agree GM has made mistakes but I am still looking for what O has done right. He has no business experience and with the way things are proceeding it is evident. This and things like removing or reducing the charitable tax deductions he is forcing reliance upon the government. The youth corps. etc, is beginning to look like Chavez if allowed to happen. For Wagoner he has money and most likely doesn't want to deal with these guys anyway but it should be up to the board and the shareholders.
In watching the video at DustMyBroom, I responded and came up with Wood's Third Law"
The bureaucracy will always ensure its members earn more money than the members of its taxation base.

Joe at March 29, 2009 9:56 PM
Problem is, Joe, we don't have the reason why The Despot "fired" the GM CEO, or how he could do so. Perhaps, Waggoner decided that the best way out was chapter 11, which I think most Americans now have ome to believe. But then, the UAW would protest. Why hasn't the head of the UAW been fired?
Joe: "I'm all in favour of ownership but when its not your money your asking for then the owner of the money gets to call the shots."
It's not Obama's money. In fact, the money is borrowed and will be the responsibility of people not yet born to pay back.
Some way to run a country.
My feeling is that the "Detroit 3" rolled the dice several decades ago and they knew this train wreck was going to happen someday. They went to big pickup trucks and SUV's as their profit centres because the Japanese and Korean car companies weren't able to compete there. Making poor quality entry level small cars was just an unprofitable nuisance so why bother.
To be sure they also had more than their fair share of poor planning and bad luck with their American factories.
When Buzz Hargrove laments the loss of GM boss Rick Waggoner, I ask myself is this a bad thing?
The thing is the car sales went from 17 million to 10 million. Normally a CEO would make cuts. The auto contracts have some weird consequences. A work force of about 200,000 and paying for medical insurance for a million people. Getting paid for not working, as in too far to drive to work so you get half pay for years. Featherbedding like the Teamsters under Hoffa. Top-up on EI to about 90 or 95% of wages. Add that to things like the line stops and you can't fix the problem until the correct union member performs the task. I have read that some workers show up for a couple of hours or not at all and get overtime every day. Nuts.
Video of my power hour extravaganza is now posted!!
Joe - you should read some Russian History and see how you like your Owe when you note how he resembles Stalin and Lenin. People in North America know nothing about the horrors of Communism...and it shows. We are what Stalin called 'useful idiots'.

Our Prime Minister, Stephen Harper was on Fox News today; interviewed by Mr' Wallace. PMSH, once again, made me feel very proud. He did not 'trash' the Americans like other PM's of the 'other' (Puffin) ilk have been known to do nor did he gush and and stammer about thrills in his extremities (as others in Canada have) when the OWE was mentioned. PMSH knew the facts and he discussed the facts in an honest, knowledgeable, courteous fashion. His demeanor was that of a Statesman; a seasoned statesman when compared to the adolescent our American friends are cursed with for FOUR LONG YEARS!! It makes me cringe when I listen to their leader's stupid far fetched ideas and I fear what his loonie ideas will bring to the American people.
Catch that segment if you can folks. I learn more about Canada on Fox News than I ever did on Canadian MSM. Canadian MSM ask the Puffin boys and girls about our government policies...and the Puffins don't know anything because they are not the government!! Fox News is informative and entertaining. I cannot stomach more than 15 min of Canadian news since Fox News entered out living room. It is Sooo worth the 9.95 per month.
Making poor quality entry level small cars was just an unprofitable nuisance so why bother.
That may have been true in the Vega/Pinto/Gremlin years, but the most recent JD Power surveys show that the number of defects have been dropping in their initial quality survey. GM's Malibu and Grand Prix ranked highest in mid-size sedans, and the truck/SUV segment was dominated by American plates (Durango, Dakota, Silverado, E-Series, Navigator). Americans can build high quality cars.
But, as I've posted before, the problem is over capacity. There was room for everyone when Americans bought 17 million cars a year. Now it's fallen by almost half. People are holding on to their cars longer, as they find them more reliable. The push for quality ironically may have led to the industry collapse. (And it's not just the Americans; my wife works for a Toyota dealer, and their sales are down dramatically.)
Jema,
Would that be the same "hard right" Fox News that my local radio broadcaster here in Vancouver told me it was?! :-)

"CYBER-CRIME: CHINA-BASED SCHEME TARGETS 12 CANADIAN COMPUTERS
Meet the Canadians who busted GhostNet
Researchers uncover explosive cyber-spy network infecting more than 1,200 computers worldwide
Against the backdrop of humming computers in the underground lab in Toronto's Munk Centre for International Studies, a screen flickered, and the most politically explosive cyber-spy network in the world began to reveal itself.
It was March 6, 12:33 p.m., and Nart Villeneuve was getting frustrated. The 34-year-old international relations student and part-time tech geek had tried everything to track down a piece of malicious software that had infected computers around the world, including those in the offices of the Dalai Lama.
Finally, he turned to the ultimate hacker's tool: He entered some of the code from those infected computers into Google. Just like that, he found one of the cyber-spy network's control servers, then another, and another. From that Eureka moment came a flood of information, almost all of it suggesting the ring originated in China.
A team of Canadian researchers revealed this weekend a network, dubbed GhostNet, of more than 1,200 infected computers worldwide that includes such "high-value targets" as Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indian Embassy in Kuwait, as well as a dozen computers in Canada."

But we’ll still protect you from a lot of imaginary threats like polygamy. We’ll still beat up on refugees, and prisoners. We’ll still whip up hysteria over crime. Because sometimes you just have to do the unassailably popular thing, when it’s the unassailably popular thing to do.

What you are ignoring, hardboiled, is the difference between the Canadian MSM and the Conservative government.
The MSM is deeply embedded within the Liberal 'Natural Governing Party' agenda of political power. The MSM works for this agenda. That is the reason for those headlines.
The reality is that the Conservative government is steering Canada, safely, through this minefield of fiscal and economic problems. These problems, as you know or ought to know, do not originate in Canada but in the global economy. Since we are, as noted, a global economy, then, we are affected.
And, since our particular version of globalism is not really global but heavily focused on our embeddedness within the US economy - something set up and maintained by Liberal governments - then, our economic well-being is tied, bonded, glued, to that of the US.
I'm sure you know that Harper has been trying to expand our economy to a genuine global nature; and that he has, as well, managed to steer us clear of the US minefields.
Of course, since you are hard-core anti-Conservative and anti-Harper, then, the facts are not of any interest to you. Back to your hatred.

“Irresponsible” federal budget caters to special interests and leaves future taxpayers with a legacy of debt
Release Date: January 27, 2009
VANCOUVER, BC— Today’s federal budget turns back the clock on Canada’s past sound fiscal management and sets the nation back down the path of massive deficits and increased debt, said Niels Veldhuis, Fraser Institute senior economist.
"This budget is simply irresponsible given Canada’s current economic climate. Massive increases in government spending and $85 billion in deficits over the next five years will do little, if anything, to boost economic activity and instead will saddle Canadians with higher taxes in the future," Veldhuis said.
“The government has caved in to the special interest groups lining up in Ottawa with their hands out for federal cash. This budget will do little in the way of improving the economy and sends a negative signal to the real generators of economic activity: skilled and talented Canadians, entrepreneurs and successful businesses.”
From 1997/98, the year the federal government balanced its budget, to 2007/08, the federal government ran budget surpluses and reduced its debt by $105 billion.
“Canadians are still paying for the legacy of past federal deficits with 13 cents of every dollar in revenue still going to pay interest on the existing debt. With a nearly $85 billion increase in debt proposed in this budget and interest rates that are likely to rise, this budget will significantly increase the debt burden for the next generation,” Veldhuis said.
“Stimulus” Spending Doesn’t Work
The 2009 budget contained a massive, $28 billion increase in government spending over the next two years (2009/10 and 2010/11) to “stimulate” the economy. The increase in spending is an attempt to appease nearly all special interests including seniors, aboriginals, farmers, the auto industry, forestry, tourism, arts and culture.
To finance this spending, the government must borrow nearly $85 billion, meaning the government will take money from some Canadians (those buying government bonds) who will have less to spend and/or invest in the private market. The end result is the government merely shuffles money around from one group of Canadians to another, rather than increasing overall economic activity.
“With these spending initiatives, the government is merely transferring money from some Canadians to special interest groups. This will not increase economic activity,” Veldhuis said.
Tax Relief
One of the budget’s major disappointments is the lack of permanent broad-based relief, Veldhuis said.
“Of the $11.9 billion provided in tax relief over the next two years, only $3.8 billion is permanent and broad-based. This is in comparison to the total stimulus package of $39.9 billion, a meagre 10 to one ratio.”
The majority of the tax relief offered mirrors the spending increases by targeting select groups and preferred industries. It includes a host of new or expanded tax credits such as the new Home Renovation Tax Credit, a First-Time Home Buyers’ Tax Credit, an extended Mineral Exploration Tax Credit and an increased Age Credit.
“Unfortunately, $3.8 billion in permanent broad-based personal income tax changes (including the small increase in the basic personal exemption and the increase in the threshold for the bottom two personal income tax rates) will do almost nothing to help the economy,” Veldhuis said.
“The government could have achieved better economic results by dropping middle and upper personal income tax rates which would have reduced the burden on highly skilled, talented and creative people and improved the incentives for increased work effort, investment and entrepreneurial risk taking.”
Infrastructure
The centre piece of the government’s “stimulus” package is the $11.8 billion in new infrastructure spending over the next two years, including a $4 billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund for provinces and municipalities, $2 billion to support repairs and maintenance and accelerated construction at colleges and universities, $515 million for First Nations Infrastructure, $500 million for recreation facilities, $500 million for projects in small communities, and $400 million for the Green Infrastructure Fund.
“While Canada’s infrastructure certainly needs improvement, increased infrastructure spending will do little to stimulate the economy. Infrastructure initiatives are rarely "shovel ready" and those that are, aren’t necessarily the ones that will provide the greatest economic return,” Veldhuis said.
Regional Economic Development and Bailouts
The budget also contained billions of dollars for specific regions and industries including:
* $4 billion for the previously announced bailout for the auto industry
* $1 billion Community Adjustment Fund for rural towns
* $335 million for culture and arts
* $140 million for tourism
* $500 million for agricultural
* $170 million for the forestry sector
* $1.0 billion for a new southern Ontario development agency
* $1.0 billion to support clean energy technology
“Yet again, the federal government is relying on failed activist economic policies that will only delay the day of reckoning for these troubled industries. The government should have used these resources to create the right investment climate and environment for all businesses to succeed,” Veldhuis said.
"All in all, this entire budget was an enormous missed opportunity. If Finance Minister Jim Flaherty truly wanted to have a positive impact on the Canadian economy, he should have reduced government spending, eliminated the capital gains tax, and aggressively decreased personal income and business taxes.”
While this isn't news, I certainly hope it provides readers some tips on fiscal conservatism.

hardboiled - I know that you think that our government doesn't operate as a parliamentary system but as a dictatorship. You think that all that it takes to govern is: Order the underlings to do it.
No debate, no discussion, no votes in the parliament - which is leftist dominated. No votes in the Senate which is run by the Liberals. No screeches from our MSM which expresses only the Liberal and left agendas. Nothing. Just the Order from the PM-as-Dictator.
But, hardboiled, reality is the opposite of your fictional Canadian dictatorship.
There is no way, even if Harper had thought it advisable, that he could have gotten a budget through the House and the Senate that, as you wish, "reduced government spending, eliminated the capital gains tax, and aggressively decreased personal income and business taxes.”
The fact that you don't even recognize this situation is, possibly, the reason for your relentless anger.
You are ignoring that Harper has been trying to cut government spending, with each step vigorously rejected by the Liberals, NDP and our MSM. These include reducing funding to special interest groups, bloated bureaucracies, maintaining unused buildings etc.
He's reduced the capital gains tax, the corporate tax in half and personal and business taxes. And the GST.
Each step, each single step - the Liberals fought against, and he was able to get these through only by threatening an election when Dion was leader. Dion, as you know, backed off each time.
Other cost cutting agendas - were scrapped by Senate and the Liberals. Oh, and remember how the Liberals, NDP and MSM worked to instill fear into Canadians by saying that Harper was wrong to cut taxes and ought to pour money into 'stimulus'?
Again, I know your views don't acknowledge this, but we are a parliamentary democracy not a dictatorship. Therefore, no matter how much you might insist that Harper 'ought' to do such and such, the reality is that we are not a dicatatorship, and it is parliament - the House and Senate that make these decisions.
It is fascinating that you totally and utterly ignore our parlimentary system, ignore that Motions are decided, not by one man, Harper, but by the parliament. Your hatred of Harper ignores reality..you never, ever, chastize the parliament, the Liberals, NDP and Bloc. Nope. Fascinating.
ET - the words you object to are the Fraser Institute's, and Andrew Coyne's.
Perhaps you should email them, and point out their hatred.
They might be unaware.
harboiled: "Mulroney's transgression seems to be that he agreed to meet with Schreiber in his final days in office." -- And what other reason would there be for investigating a private business deal? This is NOT about Airbus, and it is NOT about whether or not Mulroney did not pay his taxes, or even if he did something illegal with Schreiber after leaving office. Much of this has already been investigated by the RCMP. My question stands: Why are we only targeting Mulroney . . . and not the equally egregious abuse of office that seems to have gone on under Chretien.
And your question will continue to stand Linda, because there is no equality of Canadians before the law.
Government bureaucracies and institutionalized sloth will defeat the efforts of natural justice.
That, and life ain't fair.
Besides, my point is that it doesn't matter if someone else got away with it, Muldoon taking bags of cash from a guy in a hotel room while in office is wrong. And there is far more there than your summary of it.
That is why I was/am critical of the original statement.
Canadian automakers given marching orders for bailouts
Updated Mon. Mar. 30 2009 12:53 PM ET
CTV.ca News Staff
The federal and Ontario governments have followed the lead of U.S. President Barack Obama, saying General Motors and Chrysler's Canadian restructuring plans are unrealistic and the companies must go further.
Industry Minister Tony Clement said he believes "in the long-term viability of these companies" but the companies must make deeper cuts in order to receive billions in taxpayer funding.
"I'm here today to say the plans submitted by General Motors and Chrysler to the government of Canada do not go far enough to ensure the long-term viability of these companies. Therefore we have not certified their restructuring plans," said Clement.
However, $4 billion in interim loans will still go forward to keep the companies alive while they rework their plans, Clement said Monday morning alongside Finance Minister Jim Flaherty and Ontario Economic Development Minister Michael Bryant...."
You've done a crappy job, we can't get our heads around your math, and you don't appear viable - but here's your cash anyhow.
For most readers, I doubt its' known that the Americans got the worldwide assets of GM & Chrysler pledged to the US Government in exchange for bailout money. So, in the event of future failure, at least the government could liquidate these capital assets.
The Canadian government got nothing in exchange for $4 billion of your money. Nothing.
"Passover Is Coming!
The 2009 Passover begins the evening of April 8. (That’s the year 5769 on the Jewish calendar.) Why is this more important than all other Passovers? Why is this Passover different from all others?
The lights have gone out in America. That’s why. It’s time to walk out of Egypt."
"I said we’re headed for Egypt. In a way, we’ve been there. For decades. It is a land of fraud, conspiracy, dishonesty, and tyranny. This is Washingont, DC. Darkness covers the land, in this sense. Barry “Obama” leads into darkness, deeper darkness than ever before, not out of it. White liberals are his “god.” They speak through him.
And so Passover has a very special meaning this year. It touches the soul of any and every nation. It should be especially meaningful for America, a nation founded by men who believed the Bible, and risked their lives to make their visions come to pass. Now we have instead leadership that is selling the nation to the Third World for their own private benefit. And lying about it every sale.
What shall the people do?
Passover is not for cowards. Passover is not for sloths. The Promised land does not come to you. You have to be ever so bold as to get up and march too it! Fancy that. The Lord is there, calling you out, promising to lead you. But you have to get up and go! That’s the part we apparently forget, perpetually. As a nation, America has long forgotten that part. American people have trusted in that magic power of the vote, that wonderful democratic process. But such a process has proven too weak to keep the lights on. Darkness reigns in DC. That is obvious, in every literal way. The foul breath of infidelity and treason is breeded into the children through the traitorous education sytem.
So, as this Passover approaches, we shall examine the portent of the grand collective archetype. It is a national affair. All the old Jewish holidays are for the health of nationality. The Bible is about nationhood, not globalism. As an individual cannot escape responsibility by hiding in a group, neither can a nation evade its calling through multiculturalism and an inflated globalist vision of a few ego-maniac leaders.
Start thinking about Passover. Pesach, “spared,” is means in Hebrew. Passed over. May every sincere American come to understand what America’s calling truly is, and be spared the loss of the American spirit. May this coming Passover see a people ready to walk out of darkness. I can hear the shofar even now."

no, hardboiled, you can't evade your responsibility for posting those comments by the childish tactic of 'Bobby said it; I didn't'. I'm well aware where they came from; I'm also aware that you posted them.
You post them without a word of objection to them. This shows that you support those views.
Again, why don't you answer my questions? You don't understand that Harper, whom you hate - and this is shown by your repeated egregious attacks on him - must operate within a parliamentary democracy. Not a dictatorship.
Your criticisms of Harper and the govt assume, indeed, require, that they operate as a dictatorship.
So - since you want a dictatorship and we operate in a democracy, how do you suggest that your desires - which are yours and not those of the entire Canadian population - be achieved?
hardboiled: Well -- Mulroney's version is that the "bags" of money were taken after he left office (not really that much money involved, either) . . . and I believe even Schrieber confirms this. What we do know is that Mulroney met with or had a telphone conversation with Schrieber a day or so before he left office and this is the item with which he is being hanged. The whole thing is ludicrous. The only reason Liberals promoted Schrieber testifying (remember how Liberal party members were meeting with him while he was in jail) was to try to embarrass the Harper government. The testimony at the previous committee hearing on this have made it clear that the whole thing is mostly political. Not much will come of this. Money is being wasted investigating the wrong people. As you say -- justice is not equitable.
