especially the vader duel

"A Hardisty man died this morning after he fell into a wood-chipper outside his cottage near Lake just after 8 am Tuesday morning. Paramedics pronounced 58-year old Henirich Erdinger dead on the scene.

"'He was the love of my life,'" said his wife Ingrid, her eyes darting nervously from side to side.

"Mrs. Erdinger, a muscular, large woman with a strong back and strong arms, still had blood on her face from her attempt to rescue him.

"'It was too late, he went in headfirst,' she said. 'There was nothing I could do.'

"CBC cuts could be deep
WAYNE THIBODEAU
The Guardian

Employees at CBC are bracing for what union officials are describing as “serious” job cuts that will be announced this afternoon at the public broadcaster.
CBC will be holding what it describes as a national town hall meeting with its staff from across the country. That town hall will be held at 12:45 p.m. AT.
Hubert Lacroix, president and CEO of the CBC, is expected to outline details of the cuts as a result of a budget shortfall of $80 million to $100 million.
Up to 1,200 employees could face the chopping block."

Looks like the teleprompter jokes have finally gotten to Obama:

A bit rarefied, but eye-opening nonetheless: the latest auction of British treasury bonds (gilts) failed to attract enough buyers for the planned issue.

In sovereign finance, this event's pretty rare. Imagine what would happen if, say, Tim Geithner had to announce that part of a U.S. Treasury auction went unbid for. [A hypothetical comparison, by the way; no sign of it so far in U.S. governments.]

"PRINCE CHARLES THE SUSTAINABLE PRINCE:

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT TEN YEARS LATER
Joan Veon

It has been ten years since I have been writing and studying the now established environmental philosophy of sustainable development. I was first confronted with it at the United Nations Conference on Population and Development-UNCED in Cairo, Egypt in 1994. Sustainable development was a core philosophy behind the Programme of Action called “Agenda 21” at the 1992 United Nations Conference on the Environment and Development-UNCED, now dubbed the “Rio Earth Summit.”

In Rio, conference Secretary-General Maurice Strong stated,

Agenda 21 – still stands as the most comprehensive, most far-reaching and, if implemented, the most effective programme of international action ever sanctioned by the international community. It is not a final and complete action programme, but one which must continue to evolve."

In November 2005 Prince Charles visited Washington, DC. According to a report on the internet version of the Telegraph, one of the stated purposes of his trip was to "plead Islam's cause to Bush".

For answers and insight into that question, one only has to read the speeches of Prince Charles and read the media reports about his attendance at various Islamic events."

"National Socialism

In 1944, Ludwig von Mises published one of his least-known masterworks: Omnipotent Government: The Rise of the Total State and Total War. Drawing on his prewar experience in Vienna, watching the rise of the national socialists in Germany (the Nazis), who would eventually take over his own homeland, he set out to draw parallels between the Russian and German experience with socialism.

It was common in those days, as it is in ours, to identify the Communists as leftist and the Nazis as rightists, as if they stood on opposite ends of the ideological spectrum. But Mises knew differently. They both sported the same ideological pedigree of socialism. "The German and Russian systems of socialism have in common the fact that the government has full control of the means of production. It decides what shall be produced and how. It allots to each individual a share of consumer's goods for his consumption."

The difference between the systems, wrote Mises, is that the German pattern "maintains private ownership of the means of production and keeps the appearance of ordinary prices, wages, and markets." But in fact the government directs production decisions, curbs entrepreneurship and the labor market, and determines wages and interest rates by central authority. "Market exchange," says Mises, "is only a sham.""

"Blogger's T-shirt gesture breaks taboo on Tiananmen rebellion

References to the 1989 army crackdown on student demonstrators in Tiananmen Square are taboo in China. If mentioned at all, the protests are described as a “counter-revolutionary rebellion”.

However, one young Chinese man has now posed boldly on a blog hosted by one of China’s biggest servers wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with the date – June 4 – but in a code that may take time for censors to spot.

His T-shirt reads VIIIIXVIIV. The photos are accompanied by a hint that reads: “Here’s a clue – these are four numbers.” Whoever posted the photos of the T-shirt yesterday was well aware of the risks involved. That person placed a brief posting above the photos, reading: “This year this kind of T-shirt is very much in fashion. The design is very beautiful (those who don’t understand should do some careful thinking, those who understand shouldn’t say a word)."

Several readers have posted comments. One reads: “This is too easy. VIII (8) IX (9) VI (6) IV (4). Do I get a prize?” Another says: “Where can I buy these?”"

"See Who Says Pope Was Right About Condoms, AIDS

A senior Harvard research scientist confirmed that Pope Benedict XVI, who endured heavy criticism for declaring that condom distribution programs worsen the AIDS epidemic in Africa, was actually correct.

Dr. Edward C. Green, director of the AIDS Prevention Research Project at the Harvard Center for Population and Development Studies, told National Review Online last week that despite AIDS activists and media outlets pounding the pope for downplaying the effectiveness of condoms, the science actually supports the Catholic leader's claim.

"The pope is correct," Green told NRO, "or put it a better way, the best evidence we have supports the pope's comments.""

I caught a snippet on the radio today about how Ignatieff and Rae are still collecting donations of up to $1,100 for the liberal leadership race. Sounds fishy to me. I'm pretty sure Iggy did an end run around the rules to get coronated, thereby scuttling the democratic wishes of the liberal supporters and the race. Business as usual.

Yeah,you can still donate;----https://secure.michaelignatieff.ca/contribute/default.aspx

"Steve Janke: Liberal in-and-out scheme leaves Ignatieff scratching for answers

'We're out of time. We're out of time.' - Michael Ignatieff, asked in radio interview about donation scheme

Liberals are scurrying to spin the message after I wrote about the fundraising tactic espoused by incoming Liberal Party president Alfred Apps in an email to high-powered Liberal donors:

Each donor/purchaser can donate up to $2,200, paying up to $1,100 by cheque or credit card to the Liberal Party of Canada and $1,100 to the "Liberal Party of Canada (Michael Ignatieff)". The Ignatieff Campaign account is in surplus and any surplus automatically reverts to LPC under the Elections Act.

The emphasis was in the original email, not added by me. The message is clear. There is a moribund leadership campaign in which Michael Ignatieff is the only candidate. There won't even be a vote at the convention, just an acclamation.

In effect, there is no campaign. But the legal fiction of a campaign allows people to donate to the leadership fund. Money will be parked there until the campaign is finished, and then the surplus will be moved to the party.

Igntatieff was asked about this fundraising technique in an interview with CFRB's Brian Lilley:

MI: I can, I can assure you categorically that the Liberal Party under...I can assure you that the Liberal Party under my leadership will be fully compliant with both the letter and the spirit of all election law and that, uh, uh, every Canadian who wants to will know where every single dime raised by this party...

BL: Do you still need to be raising money for a leadership you've already won?

MI: We're out of time. We're out of time. I've given you my answer. We will be fully compliant and full transparent about everything we do."

Canadian Sentinel has posted this:

"From blogs to the media, and now to Parliament and beyond. Conservative MP Pierre Poilievre has just tabled this letter in the House of Commons:

March 25, 2009

Commissioner of Canada Elections
c/o Elections Canada
257 Slater Street
Ottawa, Ontario
K1A 0M6

Dear Commissioner,

Today's Ottawa Citizen is reporting that Michael Ignatieff's Liberal leadership campaign is inviting supporters to "double their donations to the party by contributing to Ignatieff's leadership campaign at a fundraising dinner next week." The article indicates that donors are being encouraged to circumvent the $1,100 annual donation limit to the Liberal party.

The law is designed to prevent donations over $1,100 to any political party, not to allow powerful insiders to flow an extra donation through a leadership campaign to the party.

These reports raise serious concerns and if accurate, could constitute a violation of the Elections Act. I expect you to make the proper inquiries to ensure compliance with the Elections Act.

Sincerely,
Pierre Poilievre, MP Nepean Carleton"

"EU leader condemns US ‘road to hell’

European Union hopes for a new era in relations with the US were thrown into chaos on Wednesday when the holder of the EU presidency condemned American remedies for the global recession as “the road to hell”.

Barely a week before Barack Obama is due to arrive in Europe on his first official visit as US president, Mirek Topolanek, the Czech Republic’s prime minister, put the 27-nation EU on a collision course with Washington.

His attack compounded the confusion that has engulfed EU policy after the Czech leader lost a no-confidence vote in the country’s parliament on Tuesday, forcing him to offer his government’s resignation midway through its six-month EU presidency.

Mr Topolanek said EU leaders had been disturbed at a summit in Brussels last week to hear calls from Tim Geithner, the US Treasury secretary, for more aggressive policies to fight the global downturn.

“The US Treasury secretary talks about permanent action and we, at our spring council, were quite alarmed at that . . . The US is repeating mistakes from the 1930s, such as wide-ranging stimuluses, protectionist tendencies and appeals, the Buy American campaign, and so on,” he told a European parliament session in Strasbourg.

“All these steps, their combination and their permanency, are the road to hell.”"
