If you've ever been to Cali it is striking to note how many black cars there are. In such a hot climate why in the hell would you buy a black or dark gray car??? In Japan the most popular colour choices are white and light silver, both known for their UV/IR reflectivity.

Seven weeks until I'm out of California if all goes as planned. I can't wait. The weather's wonderful, the scenery can be beautiful (although I haven't found very many places where that isn't the case), and, strange to tell, there are lots of very intelligent and intellectually stimulating people in Silicon Valley. Unfortunately, there are also lots of crazy people, and, increasingly, they run things.

Architecturally speaking, black was a very popular colour in skyscraper construction in the 70's. Now, not so much because of the related cooling costs. Refitting of the exteriors is not uncommon.

Seriously, I read this a few years ago.

While I don't have any quantitative data, getting into a white car during a summer day in southern california feels just as hot as getting into a black car. Next time I go there I'll take a thermometer. Hard to believe now that at one time I seriously thought of living there.
