I guess what he ought to have said was he 'hoped' that CAT would rehire....
This could potentially be bad news for Hugo.....
So, they're just taking the money and saying 'Screw You' to Obama?
How poetic . . .
Next thing you know The Great "O" is going to tell us there is no Santa or Easter Rabbit. Full marks to this empty suit dream crusher. Almost a reason to have an intelligence test in order to vote.
So I guess the Cat CEO was telling the truth and Obama was being economical with the truth.
I'm beginning to be entertained witnessing Obama screw up so much so rapidly. It's kind of like a long, unpleasant-sounding fart... you don't know whether to laugh or be repulsed.
And to think that Obama's brethren saw Bush as a hopeless, serial feckup... Hey, at least Bush did some things right. What has Obama done right so far? Anyone?
What has Obama done right so far? Anyone?
Didn't he win a bet with Plugs on the Supebowl?
Kate, Dieter called. He wants his line back.
Dunno. Gambling on sports doesn't count as part of the President's job. Gambling is obviously, however, what those who voted for BHO were doing in the voting booth. And they're losing...
Everywhere, the Unicorns weep, as their much cherished and long sought opportunity to live large is trashed by the false promises and faux integrity of The One.
You know, sometimes you can almost forgive the masses down south of not seeing what a screw up they elected since they are "in the mess". What I find sad is the oh so righteous (or whatever a leftoid is) MSM types are still suffering from BDS. (Bush Derangement Syndrome)
Already in the last two days, I've seen a political cartoon and endured two ad lib radio editorials about the fact that ex pres Bush is speaking in Calgary. The fact that the editorial was from a pre-pubescent dj on a rock & roll station was irrelevant but it shows that a lot of Canada cannot see the "great change" is messing up the most powerful nation on earth.
When I heard this today, I flashed back to the CEO of Caterpillar trying to back pedal out of the President's speech in a CNBC interview afterwards.
That is what you get for inviting a politician to your plant.
Then Transport Secretary Lahood being stumped on what percentage 40 Billion was of the current Infrastructure spending, he did not know, or was not saying.( the correct answer according to the CBO is 10%)
Came accross this link at a site where there was a discussion on the Health Stimulus Bill supposedly containing a "right to die" or as this site put it "obligation to die" clause for the elderly. Was not able to find out if this clause exists or if the information is true or not. However found this link which is a collection of Obama comics made from conservative bloggers comments.

In the good news is that all of the North American markets were up again today against the wishes of the cult of death leftists.

"Obama Received a $101,332 Bonus from AIG"
"With the anger and rage that is being exhibited against A.I.G., perhaps the bonuses Obama received from A.I.G. explain Obama's A.I.G crocodile tears."

March 17th 2010, "Caterpillar Inc. ups stakes and moves lock, stock and two smokin' barrels to India, so as to escape nationalization under the new "What Was Yours Is Now Our's" bill, Signed into law by President For Life Obama today."
"In other news, Ontario files for bankruptcy."
Let's keep this info in conversations as often as possible.
Well he's giving it to the little people, and now he's going after the ill and injured in the Military is there nothing Obama can't ruin? I can the National Guard drying up in a matter of months, no health insurance provider is going to cover someone being sent to a war zone.

"Kate, Dieter called. He wants his line back."
But I stole it from Flea.
"Caterpillar to lay off 2,454 workers in 3 states"
What a waste! Retrain them to operate the largest earth movers and take a run at Americas Progressives flopping around in DC trying to transplant their worthless ideas into the brains whats left of the working class.
"And now you know the rest of the story."
The working class can kiss my ass, Ive got an Obama job at last

another "obamagasm" at the globe & mail...

dress herself?"

A juxtaposition? Or just an example of the difference between dreams & reality?
Delusion. Delusion. Delusion. They must be handing out Degrees in that now.
Maybe Cat'll hire 1000 of 'em back.
I recall that story back in February. Obama was contradicted the very same day by the CEO of Caterpillar. Of course, it didn't get much press beyond Fox News.
People in the USA choose an empty suit for the most important job in the world. The big 0 really does not give a rip about the citizens of America, he likes the 'fun' of being President. He is not ready to lead anything, he would not be good at being a tin pot dictator since he just likes to strut around looking important - he is no doubt a guy who thinks he can bankrupt the USA in a few short months; then he can get even with all the American people who 'hurt' his Communist grandparents. He can also get some approval from his British Dad who lived in Kenya. I fear his Dad was a bitter man who blamed everyone but himself for his unhappy life.
The present American President is not a serious man and he seems to take great pride in his loose limbed, loose mental attitude for all things that require real effort.
America should have chosen the old soldier who knew about hard times, IMO. Instead, they choose a person who appears locked in an adolescent mindset who takes great glee in hiring all his sleazy, not so nice pals to 'play' with him in the Whitehouse. 'Playing with Futures'; the the future of the American people.
When Canadians allowed the Liberanos to run this nation into the ground for almost half a century, it was a sad commentary on a small resource rich nation who dumped it's Democracy and wealth for PC policies and social/material welfare for voters in the east and in the north but it was not disasterous to the Free World. We finally woke up three years ago and booted the crooks out of office - Americans are stuck with their President for four long years; I cringe to think of the state of the Union after 4 years of Liberano type governing.
I pray for Americans - and Canadians too. We have chosen an excellent Prime Minister but a neat, clean appartment in a ghetto takes on the smell of the ghetto.
With regard to Caterpillar, note that Obama's agenda was to persuade 'the masses' that the stimulation package was a 'perfect solution'. The fact that the CEO denied this and denied it at the very moment Obama was claiming perfection - was ignored. Obama's agenda was propaganda for the masses and he knew his pronouncement would get more air time than the CEO's.
With regard to AIG and the bonuses, it's becoming clear that Obama and his administration knew about these bonuses months ago. They were normal contracts, signed over a year ago, and are legal. The government has no legal or constitutional right to interfere in legal contracts.
The fact remains - the govt gave out these billions to AID, knowing very well about these bonus contracts. They obviously didn't expect the populist outrage and are now trying to cover their tracks. But, making a bad situation even worse, by suggesting that Congress would pass legislation to 'tax' away these bonuses. That's ridiculous and unconstitutional.
But, this whole kerfuffle is not only Obama's attempt to deal with popular outrage but hides the fact that AIG has used the billions of taxpayer dollars to pay debts in foreign countries.
ET,
I have a hunch that Obama and gang were counting on the public outrage. Need a "cause" to garner support for a "cause".
ET, good points. One gets the feeling these guys are "shooting from the hip" with this stuff. Making it up as they go along and flailing with their coats at each new fire as they trip over it.
I'd bet a donut the whole Democrat caucus didn't even twitch a brain cell at the bonuses concept when they were arranging the TARP, they were all far too busy jockeying for position and getting their faces on TV.
One thinks of Nancy Pelosi at a table discussing this stuff with Jerald Nadler and Bawney Fwank, and the mind just reels. "Screw the country, how can we manipulate this to OUR advantage!", with a forward time frame of about two weeks maximum.
Thank God the Liberals picked Dion as their guy, is all I can say. Otherwise we'd be in the soup just as bad.
Speaking of the Superbowl, I see that Rooney, the owner of the Stealers (renamed in honor of O'Bama's tax policies) who thanked Obama for his victory, has been appointed ambassador to Ireland.
Remember when owners used give thanks to God? Instead Rooney thanked his personal savior, Barack Obama.
In regard to the AIG bonus flap; When is anyone going to ask the big O the obvious question,"Why didn't any of you put conditions on the money?".
Obama logic.
Tell the corporate heads in Decatur to keep good union jobs making giant earth movers and then tell everyone else that you want the oil sands to shut down.
Am I missing something here?
But, making a bad situation even worse, by suggesting that Congress would pass legislation to 'tax' away these bonuses. That's ridiculous and unconstitutional.
ET,
I disagree with your conclusion. What is defined by a contract must be determined by legal argument, that is the only consitutional requirement. The AIG Bonus may fit into two possible conditions.
A) A performance based bonus, that has favorable taxation benefits. Excellant performance is rewarded by an earned bonus.
B) An Overt act of Tax evasion by both Company & employees using the vehicle of "retention bonus" to subject those payments as Tax-free. What a wonderful world it would be if everyone could split thier salary by 50% Tax-free schemes.
It is MHO that "B" is more than likely the standard practice, although an overt Act of tax evasion is a federal crime. I say let the shit-head lawyers argue which condition the AIG bonus suggests.
Why not open the can of worms?
The relevant constitution section is the 16th Amendment:
The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration.
This sounds to me that they can levy special taxes any time they want. So (IANAL) wording along the lines of "Any employee of a firm which received money under the TARP program whose compensation exceeds (say) $2 million shall pay income tax on the excess at a rate of 90%. " seems to suffice. Note that there is no prohibition in the 16th Amendment against making these taxes retroactive.
But what gets me is these AIG guys are saying these bonuses are "performance based". Excuse me, but WTF?! The financial products group that is receiving the bulk of the bonuses (bonii?) is the same group responsible for the massive losses. How does that performance merit a bonus?
kevinb. i think they were termed retention payments not performance bonuses.
AIG lost its right to whine about government interference when they sold the government 80% of their company.
These so-called capitalists should be hanging from trees.
There is not a damn thing capitalist nor free-market about scumbags reserving all the rewards of industry for themselves but taking NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE RISKS!
Capitalism has to do with taking risks and being rewarded for it when you get a good outcome and getting nothing if you bugger it all up. It isn't about bankrupting the world economy and walking away with a few hundred mil in "retirement allowances" or "retention bonuses" for the retards who made the mess.
Just what are these idiots being retained for? Are we waiting for them to finish the economy off for good? A nasty wound not good enough so they have to kill it completely?
Take back every penny then give them a blindfold and a bullet.
I realize that AIG the company had to be bailed out. But the brass running it does not. Everyone from middle management up should have - at the very least - been fired.
"In regard to the AIG bonus flap; When is anyone going to ask the big O the obvious question,"Why didn't any of you put conditions on the money?"."

Wally, wasn't AIG bailed out by Bush and Paulson?

northbaytrapper
northbay, when did Obama express a desire to shutdown the tar sands? During his meeting with Harper? I know there are moves in Congress to curtail American imports of oil extracted by heavily polluting processes, and no doubt that would affect tar sands sales in the US, but these moves did not start with Obama either as President or Senator and are hardly likely to result in a full-scale shutdown.
