As mentioned in previous posts, I used to listen to CNN a lot. I can't stand it anymore, because:
1. The time for commercials almost seems to exceed the time of programming
2. Their covering is not insightful, it's just like an "Entertainment Tonight" version of the news
3. Their experts are not
4. Their coverage is biased. Why do I say that? Because they are interested in selling commercial time, so they have to attract viewers. Which means they have to be Obamaphilic
Many on the left who sneer at "Faux News" have never watched it, similar to the Limbaugh haters who've never listened to El Rushbo and thus make them themselves look foolish by taking literally his parodic comments such as "Talent on Loan from Gawd..."
I'll put Shepard Smith and his daily one-hour news presentation, the Fox Report, up against the NBC, CBS, and ABC evening news any time both for "hard" news and quality of presentation.
to Mike in White Rock:
TELUS (alas, only if you're in a ADSL2+ qualified area) carries FOX News. And last I checked, I thought SHAW did too, but possibly only on digital STBs.
I'll step out of this parade and stand with CNN. Sure, it's a tiny story in the big scheme, and it could be classified as filler material for sure. But it is filed in the Health section after all. many Americans, and by extension Canadians, are infatuated with beauty and will take any shortcut to get it. M.O. does have nice arms and that's what has tongues wagging. But as the article points out, she does 3*90 minutes a week. Most N. Americans don't do 90 minutes a year and it shows in our collective girth.
I suppose what I'm saying is beauty through diligent care transcends political lines.
There, now back to our regularly scheduled programming....
Why do major outlets lean left? For the same reason that a whole host of highly rated shows were canceled one time. Remember Green Acres? The Beverly Hillbillies? Petticoat Junction? These were shows that drew huge numbers, but the wrong demographics. They drew red state older and younger viewers, when what the advertisers wanted were urban and suburban viewers with pliable minds so the advertising would actually work (young) and money to spend (urban/suburban).
Nothing has changed. CNBC gets creamed by Fox everywhere but in the demographics that advertisers want. We have to live with this reality and learn to deal with it because it ain't changing.
Our only real hope is that the networks realize that they cannot, in the cable-satellite age, compete in the field of narrow-casting. Cable can divide the audiences tinier and tinier and still make money, but that they can amass huge general audiences that some advertisers might still want that cable will never be able to produce.
There is a place for programs that parents can watch with their kids while not having to have their remote on hair trigger. American Idol, think "Two and a Half Men" without the non stop and not really needed sexual stage business.
For a pretty good, unbiased newscast I watch the PS McNeil-Lehrer Report at 3:00 pm on the Detroit PBS or at 6:00 ON KCTS, Seattle.
The Myth of Objectivity again. What you choose to report and how you choose to report it are all-important. Think of PBS as CBC South.
My late father, a retired newsman himself, used think the BBC was "unbiased" until I gently pointed out a few anomalies in their coverage to him over a period of time.
We're fortunate to live in an age where we can access many sources of information and opinion. It would be nice to see FOX more readily accessible in Canadian cable packages, but I'm not holding my breath waiting.
I still watch CNN fairly regularly in the morning when I'm on the elliptical machine at the gym (because it is the only news program on) and I think that they try to be balanced without any awareness of how to balance out their bias ...
An example of what I mean is this weekend they had their personal finance show and they had their "Experts" on to talk about how Obama's budget and stimulus package would impact you. They had three experts and you could see that they were trying to set it up as a Pro/Neutral/Con debate except the most negative "Expert" they got would be on the pro side of neutral.
not stirred enough said, said: "...especially after 8 years of viewing Laura's queen-size butt."
Yeah. Because what's important about a president of the US is the size of his wife's butt and how her arms look in a ten kilobuck designer dress.
Michelle Obama may work out like a demon, but she still walks like a Holstein. Chick needs some dance classes and heavy duty physical therapy.
None of which alters the fact that Barry is a narcissistic bigmouth with the brain of a frickin' walnut and the morals of a Chicago politician. I was going to say weasel, but thought the cut too unkind to our furry friends.
Because a story about Michelle's arms is inspirational and gives hope to all, right CNN?
Honestly, the economy is so far down the toilet it's already floating down the river, Obama is robbing his grandchildren to pay for pork and waste of cash projects, and we're supposed to give a flying frick about Michelle's arms?
I'm not sure if I should laugh, cry or start studying the art of making a home in a fridge box.
Networks don't sell shows to viewers. They sell viewers to advertisers. As long as that's how they make their money they will target the most desireable demographic, usually the young and the stupid, those who are easily influenced by TV ads.
"2. Their covering is not insightful, it's just like an "Entertainment Tonight" version of the news"
Erik, you nailed it. This is everything that is wrong with MSM tv news nowadays. it's all about Showbiz and style, not the substance, or longterm ramifications of shortsighted policies that the BigOwe is forcing down Americans throats.
I can't stand CNN, and what it has become. I was shocked they broadcast Limbaugh's speech though.....wonder what happened?
I quit watching CNN last year. I felt the coverage was bias, but the case of the white dude that got beaten by 7 or 8 black dudes was the final straw. CNN and Anderson Copper spent 100% of the time treating the blacks charged with attempted murder as victims, and made the victim of the beating out to be the "bad guy". They made every excuse for the blacks and why the jumped the white dude, for example, CNN justified the attack because apparently there was a noose hung from a tree weeks earlier that insulted blacks. They also noted that the white dude wasn't hospitalized; therefore, what did he have to complain about. Not one person stood up for the white dude; or, criticized the black dudes for their assault.
When 7 or 8 people decide to jump 1 person and beat them IT IS ATTEMPTED MURDER. I hope the kids that did go to jail rot there.
For some reason SHAW doesn't give us FOX, but we do get CNN with their bias (and stupid commercials). They certainly repeat themselves a lot.

Mike, you can order Fox News from Shaw Cable. I know -- I've been subbing to Fox News for about one year now.
For some reason, it can't be ordered stand-alone, but in a multi-channel package. That said, I believe the smallest package, the 2-channel add on is something like $3.99 per month. Peanuts really. So, call up Shaw and order Fox News post haste!
I hope you guys saw the prime minister inteview yesterday on ZAREED SHOW ON CNN.
I personally did not see it but found out about the interview from BLY blog site. Take a look.
If the american MSM are aware of the prime minister to interview him and the canadian MSM refuse point blank to acknowledge him-we have a serious problem in our hands. what I mean, the canadian MSM are the ones dictating to people who must be in governement.
Canadians need better reporting. the type of reporting we get is strictly to aid the liberals-not the prime minister, you or country.
WE DEFINITELY NEED A FOX CANADA.
You know what? I realize it's a racial characteristic, so ordinarily I wouldn't be ragging on her about it, but folks, Michelle (aka Lt. Worf) pretty much defines the term 'steatopygia' -- watching her stomp along near the presidential limo made the comparison between its trunk and hers pretty poignant. That is one massive booty. Trust me, Laura's is nowhere in the running.
Well said, JEN. I've seen more professional journalism from US broadcasters in the last week alone, than I've seen in the last 15 years in Canada when it comes to coverage of a Canadian conservative leader.
I was particularly pleased when none of the American interviewers asked PMSH if he loved Canada. :p
Laura Bush is an extremely attractive woman. If brainssostirredtheydon'tfunction thinks Laura has a "fat butt", what, pray tell, does he think of four more years of seeing Hillary Clinton's wide load?
Naw Jen, we definitely need CTV, GlowBall and CITY TV to go stony broke. I'm talking ten cents on the dollar, sell the cameras and shut the doors bankrupt.
From the ashes can come a Canadian television industry run by someone other than Liberal Party bag men.
Happily, this appears to be be in process as advertisers flee in droves. Flocks even. The more stations CTV closes, the more opportunity for independent guys to start new ones. The ones that don't suck will grow big.
Kind of like the internet but with money involved. :)
Did ya see the Hildabeast waddle down off her private jet zipped into that John Lennon meets Chairman Mao suit, last night.
She looked like Danny Devito's character in Batman without the umbrella.
You guys are cattier than a bunch of women at a hen party.
It's character and personality that count.
Why else do you think Franklin Delano married his cousin? It was character, son, it was character. The Dems who poked fun at Palin's dated hairdo missed that historical fact.
The NYT article states among other things: “Shows filtered through the strong points of view of their hosts are doing particularly well,”
Hmmm, filtered, what does that mean? Perhaps it is for the uninformed to think maybe that his point of view is subject of the NYT disapproval.
Strong points, you better believe it, O’Reilly can be obnoxious at times and can really clobber on somebody that he finds lying, like “the senator that might like to have himself arrested” (quote be Dennis Miller). The senator of the Fanny May and Freddy Mack fame.
When the press becomes too politicized, there's a way to keep a modicum of professionalism: cover another country. The fact that the U.S. interviewers treated PM Harper like professionals gives a clue. I don't believe he'd get the same treatment had he been American.
Had there been enough entrepreneurial acumen in the Canadian MSM, they'd be realizing it. Obama-worship from abroad costs, and is less understandable than Obama-worship in the U.S. itself.
If the Canadian MSM can shake off its Obamaphilia, and the execs there see the opportunity, we might see more Americans watching/reading the American segment of our domestic news than Canadians.
Ok gellen, its character and personality that count, so lets look at her words, because words become actions...
"For the first time in my adult life, I am proud of her country." Michelle openly admitted that she was never proud of her country until her husband was nominated. Sounds like she's a rather miserable person.
Oh, and I love this quote: "Barack is one of the smartest people you will ever encounter who will deign to enter this messy thing called politics"
Deign being to do something that is below one's dignity, or to do something that someone considers to be beneath them. She praises her husband for becoming president, because he is willing to become something beneath him... hmmm...
Yep, seems like she's an elitist hag. Maybe she should stick to the trash articles talking about her arms, its probably safer territory than observing her personality.
when was the last time the liberals protectionist msm ever bombasted the liberals for stealing, supporting terrorist groups making Drastic Cuts to infrastructure, Health, Education, Military, provinces etc when there was no global crisis nor recession at the time.WHEN? Never.
If the liberals had not stolen nor made those cuts then, the prime minister today will not have to deal with them now. thereby, the budget would not be this large.
Now the MSM and the liberals are blaming the prime minister for the very problems which the liberals left behind unattended.
One thing I do know is that the liberal party of canada and their pathetic MSM DO NOT LOVE THEIR COUNTRY, OUR NATION's FLAG, TROOPS AND INNOCENT CANADIANS or else they never would have stolen, supported terrorist groups nor would they have supported the HEZBOLLAH FLAG.
Only the prime minister of the three leaders loves his country flag troops.
Irene, I was being sarcastic, if you look at the sentence following. Cruel and sarcastic I admit to. Flattering either of the Obamas will never be the case.
I figure there plan is to fill our heads with so many inanities, myths. Arbitrated personality worship with the obligatory world disasters imagined. I'm convinced they think by doing this, it will take our eye's off the real fact of Obama the Trojan horse running wild threw the city burring it all about. Razing its foundations while foresworn on any oaths towards the Constitution of the USA. In this, the Socialist collectivist media will cover up any misdeeds, as they to see this as the coming of a man made Utopia. Mean while the People instead of being the bedrock of a Nation with its right to choose what government it wants, become the servants of Global Elitist Masters. These come in all sizes, shapes, rich or poor, ethnicity, nationality, or gender. The only thing in common is their hate for humanity & God, A feeling of entitlement, with a love for power.
JMO
Its ok gellen, I was just pointing out that its probably safer for the articles on Michelle to stick to her arms and her clothes because if we focus too much on her character, she might be revealed to be a complete well... insert your own derogatory term here, like oh, I dont know, president of the united states (at least according to Michelle that's derogatory)
As Mike in White Rock said at 1:10, which I forget to mention in my list, CNN repeats itself a lot - way too much
One thing that surprised me is what Amy Holmes said. (For those who don't know she is the super pretty Conservative/Independent commentator on CNN).
When the panel were talking about taxation for those making above $250,000 per year, she said she wouldn't qualify. Who knew. I thought all those talking head people made big scratch.
CNN is bad. Fox News is bad. I've watched both quite extensively. CNN International is way better than Fox News and CNN America combined. Better programming, better anchors, better correspondents, better coverage, and crucially, better access to events.
I had a chance to compare the three channels during the terrorist attacks in Bombay last year. CNN America and Fox News took a while realising there was a story present. BBC World picked up on it first, followed by CNN International and Deutsche World News, who reported it within a matter of minutes - at least 30 minutes before either CNN Anerica or Fox News.
CNN managed to switch to its International feed, whereas Fox turned to broadcasting not one, but a host of relatively unknown local Indian stations, largely due to the absence of any Fox News correspondent in India. Unsurprisingly, Fox News was waaaaaaay behind on reporting developments, sometimes failing to even acknowledge them. When it did, it would put forth contradictory information put forth by local, and questionable, Indian stations. CNNi, BBCw, DW etc were way better in their coverage, lagely because they have the resources at hand. What I found thoroughly amusing was the failure on the part of Fox News to coordinate with other News Corporation companies that have strong reputations - such as Sky News or the India based Star News. Murdock owns all of them, yet Fox couldn't get the cooperation of the other two. Sky News did, however, pick up feed from Star News, which was provided some of the best India-based coverage.
Whats my point? Fox News, like CNN America, is not a 'News Channel' worthy of the name. While CNNa can turn to CNNi for coverage, Fox News doesn't deem it neccessary to keep a correspondent in India. Fair enough, since most Americans don't care about what goes on in India, anyway. Therein lies the catch.
American news channels target North American customers. North American custormers, their interests, and their demands, determine these channels coverage. All the coverage is tailormade to suit American viewers. In a market economy, that is completely acceptable. they compete against each other and Fox News has the better COMMERCIAL product. Viewers enjoy it because it suits their demands.
Quality-wise, however, neither FOX news, nor any North American based channel, can stand up to the quality provided by the established international names. BBCw DW etc provide content on a global scale and don't try to dumb themselves down to appeal to any particular audience. They focus on quality, and provide news coverage, not some dumbed down, carefully tailored, commercial product aimed at sating the desire of consumers whos interests are limited.
Comparing CNN America and Fox News and declaring one superior, is like comparing two rotten apples. Compare them to the real thing out there. They're both pretty awful. If you want a great commercial product, Fox News wins hand down. If you want factual, in-depth quality news coverage, there isn't a single North American channel to turn to. Fox News and North American channels in general love human interest stories -stories about individuals. The rest of the world focuses on events. Fox News can keep telling its viewers about how a dog saved the life of its owner. That qualifies as 'news' around here.

I have been listening/reading all morning the MSM nitwits claiming that our economy "Fell by 3.4% in December"
The story is so wrong.
What actually happened is our economy shrunk by about .85% in the Quarter ending in December, or an annualized rate of 3.4 %.
And they wonder why people don't trust their ability to report accurately or truthfully.
For a pretty good, unbiased newscast I watch the PS McNeil-Lehrer Report at 3:00 pm on the Detroit PBS or at 6:00 ON KCTS, Seattle.

when was the last time the liberals protectionist msm ever bombasted the liberals for stealing, supporting terrorist groups making Drastic Cuts to infrastructure, Health, Education, Military, provinces etc when there was no global crisis nor recession at the time.WHEN?

Megaera - Michelle (aka Lt. Worf) That is the funniest thing in a while for me. Lets all do our part to make that stick
Just used the Michelle aka Lt. Worf bit, met with thunderous laughter.
