As soon as I saw fighting off wolves I said BS and quit reading.
I watched a wolf chase a big bull moose onto a frozen lake, and take it down with one well placed bite. The rest of the pack piled on, and the moose was dead within a minute.
Two terrified city slickers couldn't fight off a weasel.

What about an ill-tempered vole?

African, or European?
As an eleven year old, I can remember running across the ice of a Northern Manitoba lake with a pack of wolves just out of sight in the evening twilight. A couple of shots from the rifle of my brother and they kept well at bay. He was 9 going on 10.
Anyone who thinks there is no danger from North American predators also believes Harry Potter is a history text.
What is really sad is that a woman lost her life needlessly. When you get on a cruse ship or a commercial airplane, the first thing they teach you is how to deal with an emergency. But I don't know how many people I have seen go off in the wilderness with not even a cigarette lighter in their pocket or carrying a warm jacket. Yep; we'll be back for lunch; sure we will.
Turning my collar back to the front.

Fortunately for the distraught couple, they were of the smug leftish persuasion and carried an emergency supply of Hopey-Changey 09™ ... Upon opening their survival vial, a brilliant rainbow was emitted alerting a flock of passing rescue unicorns of their plight. The unicorns guided them safely to the nearest Starbucks and they lived happily ever after...except for the ill tempered vole who crossed its fangs with the rescue unicorns....pictures at 11 after we wizz 'em up with our super photo shop software.
Ever eat a pine tree? Many parts are edible.
Personally, my most terrifying experience was a very aggressive chipmunk who, I just knew, was threatening my personal well-being.
I considered lobbing a couple of rounds at the beast, but then I thought that would just antagonize the rest of his pack...then I would be in REAL trouble.
So I retreated, phoning CBC as I escaped from the beast. Unfortunately, it was after office hours (apparently CBC works only 9 to 4), so I missed having my narrow escape from the ferocious wildlife in Alberta documented on the peoples' network.
Damn. I hate it when that happens...
...and the Leftist trolls on my site accuse me of sensationalizing?
Well, just watch the CBC... I mean, we actually have our money confiscated so they can do that.
I do it on my own dime... that's the difference. And if I make a mistake, it won't be as daft as believing that the trees retain their leaves in the dead of winter!
Seems the CBC is more of a storytelling (propaganda-spewing???) state apparatus node than a news reporting organization, as if they can't tell the difference between serious news and dramatic entertainment, as if they melded the two. Dammit- why don't they just make a friggin' movie rather than using the "news" to tell an exaggerated story?
This begs the question: Do they tell embellished, sensational, fabricated stories when doing their political and social coverage???
Is it not just the fluff pieces, but also the serious stuff which they coat with the B.S.???
Hint: YES. DUH. As if we hadn't already figured that out...
Oh, and they expect us to believe in the Big Lie of AGW/CC? After they B.S. us like this, over and over and over???

"Ever eat a pine tree? Many parts are edible."
While I personally don’t recall that commercial on TV, I can say that for most people you should not confuse edible with "it won't kill you". There are many things that will pass through our digestive tract without damaging it and also without providing worthwhile surplus energy.
After all the "art of survival" is about minimizing energy expenditure for maximum energy input. It is not about maintaining a balanced diet. And it is definitely NOT about experimenting with the local flora since the "runs" are a death sentence in a survival situation.
Hence, if your last name isn’t Gibbons and you are not 100% certain that the flora you are about to ingest is safe and energy rich, then don’t do it!
Much better to eat any animals that you may trap (such as the CBC variant of wolf that is apparently running around) and BOIL the crap out of it. After all, if you are a normal “obese” North American (as the CBC tells us all the time) then you got at least 30 days of food built in, just need some fresh water (boil that extensively too)!!
However, quebecers or hippies by all means – go gnaw on a redwood!!
Hmm... sounds on-topic, Ulianov's comment. Gives me some more thoughts about the CBC, so...
Right, Uli. Don't worry about enemy intercontinental nuclear bombers approaching your airspace. Just ignore them; they're there for "peaceful purposes"... just like Iran's nuclear program, right?
Right. The CBC was sensationalizing in this case. Suuuure. Nothing to worry about with respect to long-range enemy airships, with stores amounting to capability to wipe out millions, approaching your airspace... what are we, crazy?
Nice propaganda attempt, though. Just like the Russian propagandists who pop up every time I do a post ripping Russia and Putin.
I guess the Russians wouldn't bother to care if we flew some U-2 recon flights over their motherland, or approached their airspace with a B-52? Like hell they wouldn't. They'd probably send up a MiG-31...
I say the CBC was right to report the Defence Minister's comments on the Tupolev-95's approach over the Arctic, possibly en route to overfly Canada. And it is right to intercept. To not intercept would be suicidal. To trust the Russians would also be suicidal. I'm glad the government didn't try to cover this up.
In a rare show of seriousness, probably thanks to a closet conservative (oh, they're there; trust me; I know the Big Media has closet conservatvies) within, the CBC actually does something... useful in this case involving serious stuff.
Still, the private sector media also delivered the news. So we don't need to blow over a billion bucks a year to duplicate their reporting. The CBC offers nothing special to me that the private sector doesn't already provide. Besides, private broadcasters are required to carry "Canadian content", so why do we need a CBC then???
They are now "prowling" wolves.
"The CBC reported Weepy Peter MacKay's tale of Russian Bears infringing on Canadian airspace"
Russian long-range aviation operating on the fringes of Canadian airspace is a serious issue. However, the way CBC reported it was just appalling.
Whatever you might think of ther actions, the Russians aren't so stupid as to actually enter Canada's airspace. That would be very, very serious: tantamount to an act of war.
That CBC would flippantly imply they "probed" Canadian airspace shows how clueless the corporation is.
Still, we were also given ample opportunity to see how clueless the opposition can be. Paul Dewar NDP (is he really as thick as he seems?) and Bob Rae (who should know better) both implied the government was merely trumping up this incident to divert public attention from the economy...
I used to eat pine trees all the time.
Oh, wait.... my kitchen table was made from a pine tree.
Sorry.

Well, let me tell you about my encounter with a frothy Blue Jay! A long while back, my wife and I had finsihed setting up camp in a provincial park in NS, and I had just nestled into my chair with a newspaper and a scotch. Next thing I know, this Blue Jay lands about 6' away on the lantern pole that extends through the nearby picnic table. Staring right at me, he started sqawking and flapping his wings. I thought he was going to dive-bomb me so incessant were his demands for food (at least that's what I thought he wanted...)
Moral of the story: you don't have to go to the back country to encounter wild creatures! lol
Redux - This is actually a sad story where a person lost her life. Our RCMP blew it, plain and simple. The kind of comment you made at 1:44am I would have expected from certain folks who post at this site.
From you, I would have expected better. Maybe the hour (late) or a few too many scotch's?
Our RCMP blew it, plain and simple
Well THAT'S a surprise, eh? Canada's Keystone Cops drop the ball again... !

The CBC story now has a correction at the end of the story about them using their skis to fight the wolves.
The headline still says they were "scared...of wolves". Not UFOs? Not sharks? The RCMP is supposed to be protecting them from their thoughts?
kdl - "The RCMP is supposed to be protecting them from their thoughts?"
No, the RCMP help to protect us all from our stupidity.
I don't know that out of bounders don't put out SOS's for fun. The RCMP isn't at fault when you go out of bounds, don't stay put, no GPS, no beacon, obviously not enough warm wear, no itinerary at the hotel lodge, no food and few brains. They were experienced skiers so they should have known better. There is no gaurantee you will survive your own mistakes. When you are off by yourself than you better rely on you.

I was threatened by a wild animal once. In the woods too!
Ok, it was Algonquin Park, and a porcupine wandered across the portage in front of me. Did y'all know they rattle when they walk? Its true.
Can I be on CBC too? pleasepleasepleeeeease?
kdl - As a further thought - "The RCMP is suppose to protect them from their thoughts?"
I thought that was the job of Canada's Human Rights Commissions.
"Lions, tigers, and bears, oh my!"
How many feet of snow did they have to dig through to get to the leaves lying on the ground? Last time I was in Golden in February there weren't any leaves on the trees. Of course if you dig far enough down the wolves would be too scared to jump down to kill you.
Well said 'speedy'. I am sorry that the woman died, lets all face facts here. If you want to take the chance of taking on nature, you are probably going to pay for it in the end.
CBC, providing a Canadian perspective on made-up news for 70 years.
ulianov's buddies exposed/uncovered by Senator McCarthy.
ulianov, aka Lenin, exposes itself.
...-
"Q. These same books insist that Senator McCarthy never uncovered "a single communist" in his five-year fight. Is that true?
A. Joe McCarthy was hated and denounced not because he smeared innocent people, but because he identified guilty people. Any list of identified communists uncovered by McCarthy would have to include Lauchlin Currie, Gustavo Duran, Theodore Geiger, Mary Jane Keeney, Edward Posniak, Haldore Hanson, John Carter Vincent, Owen Lattimore, Edward Rothschild, Irving Peress, and Annie Lee Moss. But that is not the whole story. McCarthy also exposed scores of others who may not have been identified as communists, but who certainly were causing harm to national security from their posts in the State Department, the Pentagon, the Army, key defense plants, and the Government Printing Office. At the latter facility, which handled 250,000 pieces of secret and classified printed matter annually, the McCarthy probe resulted in the removal or further investigation by the FBI of 77 employees and a complete revamping of the security system at the GPO."

ulianov - could you please provide some factual evidence to substantiate your opinion that the reporting by the government of the Russian planes was
"about distracting from the economy, it's about playing up our strategic importance to the US while we were in their news."
You see, the facts are simple: the Russian planes were there; Candian planes put in an appearance and signalled to them that they were entering Canadian airspace; this incident was reported.
Now, it's your turn. Could you provide factual evidence that reporting this incident was not about the reality that took place, but was to 'distract attention from the economy' (you'll need some evidence that this distraction actually occurred).
Oh, and that reporting this incident also resulted in the US increasing their view of Canada's strategic importance to them.
"ulianov: 'but the truth of the matter is that these flights are over international areas and happen often.'"
You are being rather disingenuous here. If these flights occurred in international waters off, say, Madagascar, they'd be of little or no concern to Canada.
Russian military patrols adjacent to Canadian airspace in the Arctic require rather more vigilance and attention.
Are we feeding ulianov/Iberia now? Why?
But as long as we're feeding the troll, choke on this uli:
The fact is that Russia is still flying those same POS Bear bombers on the same friggin' "annoy the Americans" mission since what, 1956? That says all that needs saying about Russia and your commie masters.
The Bear is the ultimate expression of the propeller driven bomber, the dream come true of commie aircraft designers... in 1938. They didn't actually figure out how to make one until 1952. When the Americans were already flying the B-47.
Welcome to 2009. The B2 stealth bomber is 17 years old. The Russians are flying... the Bear.
And you think so much of the commies that your screen name is ulianov. Which says all that needs saying about you.
Go find a bridge to hide under. Or maybe a culvert, you don't rate a whole bridge.

Roni Pull your head out of your a$$.
Roni - excellent Pavlovian summary. You do CBC proud!!!
"Redux - This is actually a sad story where a person lost her life. Our RCMP blew it, plain and simple."
Hey there different bob, thanks for stepping in as my conscience on this one but I really don't have a lot of sympathy for people who kill themselves through misadventure brought on by their own choice, stupidity, arrogance, naiveté....It's a bit of a crap-out to blame the RCMP for the ultimate fate of tenderfeet who willingly take on the Dawn Mountain wilderness in the winter. (I guess the Trudeau kid's folly wasn't warning enough) These geeks were way off trail and have no experience in Mountain winter survival or back country travel...they probably ignored the warnings that Feb is avalanche season and weather changes in a matter of 20 min...they carried no rescue becon and no survival gear, they left no notice when they expected to return...all of which which is common practice for BC wilderness X-skiers and snowmobilers...if they did know, then they took the big risks and got tagged ... unfortunate but Darwin wins.
At any rate I wasn't mocking them or revelling in their grief I was having sport with the CBC's sensationalism, naivity of mountain wood craft and displaced emotionalism.
Thanks for your concern for my moral health though, after a few scotch I tend to trim all the warm fussiness off of stark realities.
"about distracting from the economy, it's about playing up our strategic importance to the US while we were in their news."
OK. The economy sucks. Everyone knows that. Do you honestly think that this story will distract Canadians from this fact? Anyone who believes that has about as little respect for the intelligence and attention span of the average Canadian as do idiots like Paul Dewar and Bob Rae.
These two CBC tales have revealed much...
1. A coupla rebels without a cause, happilly broke the rules and paid the price....going out of bounds. Out of bounds means stay the **** out.
2. The long cherished myth of the tree-huggers that wolves don't attack people took a serious hit. IMNSHO, they had no chance to fend off a wolf attack...
3. The CBC represents the Bears as flying museum exhibits but the truth is that the current active inventory of TU 95MS were built in the 80's and 90's and are the same age as our CF18's.
Archaic they are not but a brilliant design steadily developed much like the B52. The swept wings are not a fashion statement but reflect that they are the FASTEST propellor driven aircraft in history. Their unrefueled range is prodigious and with modern cruise missles aboard (range about 1500 miles)they can attack most of Canada without entering Canadian Airspace.
What they do is enter the NORAD DEFENCE IDENTIFICATION AIRSPACE which extends far beyond Canadian territory.
biffy; it's because the economy is in a downer that the Russians are testing our military capability. You are bang on!
Again just like NA predators, the Lib-Left discounts the dangers society faces.
If you go off in the woods without at least minimal preparation your remains will quite likely be found partially eaten. Hopefully you died before the eating.
I'm sure the Russians are trying to determine just how fluffy the thinking of the new US administration is on many fronts. This is also real even if the Constantly Biased Corp. portrays Harry Potter as a history text.
Sorry if i'm preaching again.
for the idiot yapping about how they were out of bounds.
Next time you're flying down the highway speeding and you have a wreck you have no right to rescue either.
Retards.
Maz2: McCarthy Uncovered:
The operative word here is uncovered. The people on the list were uncovered by others, long before Sen McCarthy, he may be accurately described as publicising these leftists. Annie Mae Moss was a black cleaning lady who appeared before his committee, this was a simple mistake of confused identity. The real Moss if she existed was never discovered.
Hey you guys I was being sarcastic !! Read between the lines.
"Why wasn't it a big deal in the past? " Because they usually turn back into Russian aerospace before reaching the defense area. And the media would ignore a press release on every patrol.
Just a question? What are the Russians so paranoid about? That's the silly part. Do they think our decimated military will sneak in and take over their half of the Artic or we will find out the secret to making Vodka out of potato peels?
Just askin.
the Montreal couple shoulda watched the BearGrylls show. Course when I was a kid I had to take down grizzly bears with only a hunting knife/
If a deer won't touch a pine tree until several weeks into a particularly hard winter, I sure in the hell will not give it a try.
Also, the speeding car and the out of bounds analogy don't work. The correct analogy would be a speeding sled team in Antarctica, I suspect. You are dead wrong either way.
When in a remote area, one tosses the dice. If you decide to proceed in the face of warnings and weather, it is a failed IQ test.
I lay this at the feet od Disney . To many talking animal & Bamabi pictures. To the point I believe where people actually think the wilds are just a playground full of happy animals just waiting to help you out.
