94% of the carbon in the atmosphere has the same isotopic signature as the natural background. 6% is of an organic origin, fossil fuels included. Half of that organic source, 3% is what the IPCC itself says man is contributing.[...]
President Barack Obama’s climate czar said Sunday the Environmental Protection Agency will soon issue a rule on the regulation of carbon dioxide, finding that it represents a danger to the public.
The White House is pressing Congress to draft and pass legislation that would cut greenhouse gases by 80% of 1990 levels by 2050, threatening to use authority under the Clean Air Act if legislators don’t move fast enough or create strong enough provisions.
... and from the comments:
“It’s politically motivated, scientifically unjustified and legally ridiculous” said tallbloke, chief of himself, a contributor on Whats Up With That. “Co2 a pollutant? Are they on this earth or fullers?” He added.A representative of the Union of rhizomes, foodcrops, artichokes, cacti and triffids UR-FACT said the measure to remove co2 from the atmosphere “amounted to the mass murder of all photosynthesising lifeforms”.
Vegetable Supremo Carol Browner was “unavailable for comment”.
[...]
This is good news. Instead of limiting themselves to 60 second ads, OpEd pieces, PR releases, scare headlines, movies and pictorial spreads in national magazines, the anti-CO2 folks will have to come up with real numbers showing what power plants will be shuttered, what industries will be crippled, where the windmills and power lines will be built, how much the solar collectors will cost and how the mass transit will be paid for. Real activity to be paid for with real money and real changes in how people live. Moaning and complaining is easy. Cutting carbon isn’t just hard, it’s impossible without unacceptable sacrifice and expense.

Reading this story earlier in the day gave that "oh sh*t" feeling: my kids' future is in grave jeopardy, and from the Great O!!
If the US goes down this path, without serious opposition from those of us with some uncommon sense, the decline of the American empire is unavoidable.
Utter insanity!
lets hope these morons start ordering coal fired electrical plants to shut down for the crime of emitting "C02 pollution" and add a huge tax on gasoline, home heating fuel and diesel for trucks.
Just in time for the cost of living to go through the roof and those pesky mid term elections to happen.
Go Obama go
This could indeed be the best result. If I am correct, prosecutions under the EPA would be of a criminal nature, and the defendants should be able to bring scientific evidence to the trial. This would then give the real science a chance to become known and "the science is settled" would not likely be allowed to be prosecution's the full answer, as it is in the MSM currently. A few high profile cases might spell the beginning of the end of the scam.
I hope that the statement "The White House is pressing Congress to draft and pass legislation that would cut greenhouse gases by 80% of 1990" represents a misunderstanding and should read, "... cut CO2 attributable to human activities TO 80% ...". Cutting total CO2 by 80% (which is what the statement literally says) is impossible by human agency. Cutting water vapour, a major greenhouse gas, is even more difficult. The Great O can't cause our Sun to go nova (which will eventually take care of all green house gases) but I suppose that he can eliiminate human activity from North America.
Cutting CO2 attributable to human activities to 80% of 1990 will only eliminate most *economic* activity from North America. Whew! Had me scared there for a minute.
The inmates are certainly running the madhouse now.
Insanity......after reading Anthony's post this morning I've been absolutely numb ever sense.
These people are nuts...... and dumber than a sack of hammer handles.
Idiots really.
I believe that environmental science should be viewed as a "social science", as opposed to a "natural science" or "applied science", the way climate change evidence and action is heading.
Funny, that
They are serious and it all is going to go downhill very fast very soon if they implement this nonsense. ALL economic activity will grind to a halt.
Good God... it is going to be a very long 4 years.
"The ability to understand and evaluate computer models is fast becoming a prerequisite for the policymaker, legislator, lobbyist, and citizen alike. During our lives, each of us will be faced with the result of models and will have to make judgments about their relevance and validity. Most people, unfortunately, cannot make these decisions in an intelligent and informed manner, since for them computer models are black boxes: devices that operate in completely mysterious ways. Because computer models are so poorly understood by most people, it is easy for them to be misused, accidentally or intentionally."
For those unfamiliar with computer modeling - give this paper a try. How much did we learn about economic modeling in the last 20 years?

"Cutting Carbon isn't just hard, it's impossible without unacceptable sacrifice and expense"
Anyone wondering out loud why the Wiz of 'O wants a huge domestic army to enforce America's security on its citizens? unacceptable sacrifice and expense is just another description of Socialism.
Is there room for a fifth face on Rushmore?
Good thing the US Constitution gives ‘We The People' every right to change the makeup of their Congress every two years.
It's only 20 months until the next election.
The Democrats, in their short time of unfettered power, have taken the US in a direction the taxpayer does not want it to be taken.
Throw away your despair! The American populace will punish these people beyond your expectations!
Nothing good ever comes in a negative vote.
Hey, hey LBJ, how many kids did you kill today? was followed by Richard Nixon.
It will take little imagination for the American people to finally see they've been duped.
Gun sales are up three times the normal rate. Texas is talking succession.
Ultimately, the ballot will win over the bullet.
Count on it.
This is real! The cast is set. Senate Majority leader (Reed) announced a Global Warming bill for the summer. Energy bill soon
Bill Clinton is shilling (MSM) for AGW & Hillary likewise in China. The Democrats are pushing this turd all the way... they want EU Socialism at any cost. Its not about the science of AGW, never was, never will be, it’s always been about creating jobs for environmentalists and building socialism as the form of Global Governance.
PBS started the dialog of "we must share our Sovereign rights" in January of 2008, but stopped suddenly because of the election. The are now pushing that idea full time (most likely with money from the stimulus)
How bad will it get! Blood "red" when ppl realize that the world Socialists created the Melt down of the Market. George Soros, Al Gore & Others have committed treason.
The good thing is that the Names and Organizations are known and easy to find, thanks to the NET
Bunker down!
The really sad, regrettable aspect to this is the whachos of the lunitic fringe groups...such as the Michagan militia....are right on the money....
Hopefully the ballot will do the job done rather than the bullet....but then it was inevitable violent times would finally visit North America....
Welcome to Suzukiland.
This is a good money making opportunity if you think about it.
CO2 as a toxin, 300 millions americans of which about 60 million voted the big 'O' means a large potential market for "Carbon Masks"
I can see the pitch now:
That right, protect the environment from yourself - buy a carbon mask today! The carbon mask is designed to limit your personal CO2 breathing expenditure everyday in an efficient and environmentally friendly way. It simply limits the amount of oxygen to your brain. After all, your voted the big 'O' so it only makes sense that you don't really need that much oxygen to tow the party line.
End Pitch
Of course, I won't tell lefties that it is simply an old sock and that they are really just putting a sock in it. No need to damage their fragile minds any further.
I've also got a methane mask. It goes in the other end, liberally applied with a large steel toe boot!
"...the regulation of carbon dioxide, finding that it represents a danger to the public."
CO2 as poison?
Good.
As I posted here before, This should be the Achilles heel that brings the whole eco socialist movement down. Watch for a state by state appeal to the supreme court even if its the EPA and not congress enforcing this garbage.
The worm should now turn!
That the Dems have an agenda and payoffs "should" become obvious to the markets, and then the taxpayers of the US.
But
My fear is that the stimulus package and the banking/money fiasco ongoing is the Dems version of "shock and awe" in order to keep the American populace befuddled and divided, therefore keeping this insidious cap and trade agenda obscure.
The attack on general aviation was set up during the auto exec meetings.
How is Boeing, Pratt and Whitney. GE supposed to go green? Electric 787's ? Dream on.
And
V Clause is now heading the EU for six months. I pray he calls B Hussein Obama on this BS.

"Dissidents Against Dogma
By Alexander Cockburn
June 7, 2007
We should never be more vigilant than at the moment a new dogma is being installed. The claque endorsing what is now dignified as "the mainstream theory" of global warming stretches all the way from radical greens through Al Gore to George W. Bush, who signed on at the end of May. The left has been swept along, entranced by the allure of weather as revolutionary agent, naïvely conceiving of global warming as a crisis that will force radical social changes on capitalism.
Alas for their illusions. Capitalism is ingesting global warming as happily as a python swallowing a piglet. The press, which thrives on fearmongering, promotes the nonexistent threat as vigorously as it did the imminence of Soviet attack during the cold war, in concert with the arms industry. There's money to be made, and so, as Talleyrand said, "Enrich yourselves!"
The marquee slogan in the new cold war on global warming is that the scientific consensus is virtually unanimous. This is utterly false. The overwhelming majority of climate computer modelers, the beneficiaries of the $2 billion-a-year global warming grant industry, certainly believe in it but not necessarily most real climate scientists--people qualified in atmospheric physics, climatology and meteorology. Geologists are particularly skeptical."

"Jim Hansen supports civil disobedience
22 02 2009
Some have said in the past that Jim Hansen of NASA GISS is no longer a scientist, but an advocate. Today, by his own hand, I believe that description rings true.
Click for video
Here is what Greenpeace is using Dr. Hansen for:
It’s time to take a stand on global warming. Dr. James Hansen, an internationally-recognized climate scientist, calls for Americans to take part in the Capitol Climate Action on March 2 at the Capitol power plant in Washington DC — expected to be the largest display of civil disobedience against global warming in US history. Dr. Hansen warns that unless we stop burning coal, the country’s largest source of global warming pollution, young people will inherit a dramatically different world than the one we know. For more info visit capitolclimateaction.org.
Let us hope that nobody is injured or killed at this demonstration. Hansen may run afoul of the Hatch Act, see below."

AGW-Leftists are now labelling Ontario, Canada residents/taxpayers as "NIMBYists".
The list of labels grows: racist, wreckers, NIMBYists, >>>> heretics >>>> public enemies.
Those who dissent/resist the CO2 fraud are the New Jews, aka The Other.
The population is being culled/herded into us vs them; them being the New Jews.
McGuinty has the Final Solution >>>> "The Green Energy Act".
The benign title of the Act covers up/hides/masks punitive rules/regulations for its enforcement, complete with Green Police.

This is what I was thinking about when I commented on the doggie video a minute ago. You Americans could end up with a ration card and a weekly visit from the Department of Carbon Reduction before this Christmas if the propaganda works right.
We Canadians will have a breathing space until Iggy works up the nerve to have a coup in the House of Commons.
On the bright side, Americans are the best armed, crankiest b@stards in the entire world. The One will have to pass a universal gun registration/confiscation first. That's when you'll know they are serious.
Don't say I didn't warn y'all.
As their arguments get weaker, the people lose interest, and their modelling is revealed as nearly useless, the pronouncements get downright goofy:
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,498133,00.html
Yes, the eminently wrong Nicholas Stern now pronounces that "climate change could mean extended world war."
He can't prove it, but he's quite confident and feels there will be consensus. The next war will, of course, prove his point, 'cause we never had war before "climate change," just like we never had war before capitalism, and so on.
Imagine Y2K with no expiry date, or tulips without end. Maybe they should actually "prove" world climate is warming before pronouncing humans are to "blame."
Hansen may run afoul of the Hatch Act, see below.
I am very concerned that Hansen/Gore may have violated the Official NASA secrecy Act.
Gore got an exception for NASA’s climate data in the 90’s, but it is unknown what technology may have been shared with foreign Scientists.
At this point Hansen/Gore MUST have thier NASA clearances revoked. They should not be involved with a Gov’t organization that attracts the brightest & most capable Scientists to its Core mandate.
The formula is simple.
First, terrify the population.
Second, plant the seed only government can save the situation.
Third, people are now ripe for the pickings, thus governments can tax and tax in the name of global salvation. No wonder bureaucrats and collectivists are drooling at the potential windfall.
This windfall is way past the potential stage, prospector. Every company not run by lobotomy patients is "going green". Maybe you don't watch much TV and are missing the ads - good for you, there's almost always something better to do.
This whole episode will go down in history as the greatest marketing and taxation gravy train of all time, mark my words, and it's far from over. but don't worry, the Global Soil Crisis and Global Water Crisis are already launched, just as skeptical scientists who watch green NGOs predicted a few years ago. They won't bother mentioning until they have your money in their pockets that the crises are in the developing world and have existed for centuries, but hey, what's a little sin of omission?
Don't repeat this 3% statistic as it is easily refuted. The global concentration of CO2 has gone up by 33% from pre-industrial times. Given the high amount of natural flow of CO2 to and from the atmosphere the small percentage of man-made left in the air is to be expected. This argument will only convince climate change believers that skeptics are idiots. Argue them on the size of feedbacks and inability of the climate models to predict forward at all.
Anon - citation needed please on the 33%.
"Vegetable supremo" - that nearly cost me a keyboard!
Anon = John Cross in disguise?
CO2 has gone up and down a lot over geological time. So has mean temperature, ambient pressure, O2 concentration and etc. blah blah blah.
My truck didn't do it all those other times.
From the Wikipedia article on "falsification":
Scientific theories can always be defended by the addition of ad hoc hypotheses. As Popper put it, a decision is required on the part of the scientist to accept or reject the statements that go to make up a theory or that might falsify it. At some point, the weight of the ad hoc hypotheses and disregarded falsifying observations will become so great that it becomes unreasonable to support the base theory any longer, and a decision will be made to reject it.
"The addition of ad hoc hypotheses" - that is to say, the bolting on of new arguments when your original predictions fail. The AGW crowd continue to bolt on new reasons why the dramatic temperature rise is coming real soon now, even though every observation we make falsifies their theory. Our goal is to hang on until their ridiculous theory collapses under the weight of its own retrograde motions.
I'm with CarsonH on this. I got a sinking feeling. These peoploe running the US of A are really, seriously, stupid.
Anon, yes it has gone up from, however it was measured before they even knew of the existance of CO2, from 260 to 380 ppm. But the 3% figure still holds.
More CO2 is put in the atmosphere as the planet has warmed a little since the little ice age.
BTW, I believe the CO2 budget still has many unknowns in it.
What do you want, Anion, Zero ppm? Personally, I like life and it will be much improved if the CO2 levels went up to 1000 ppm, still much less than the concentration of the evil Argon in the atmosphere.
Phantom: Nope, not me - I always put my name to what I say. I do agree with his numbers though.
Regards,
John
