Damn I was just about to make an identicle post and try to get you to link it... This is why you are the best conservative blogger.

This could explain the petrified palm tree shards my dad brought home in his lunchbox from GCOS (Suncor) back in the day.

The environment in Fort Mc Murray used to be something different than today. Who knew?

Syncro

this could splain

could splain this.

Can't be bothered.

Syncro

No wonder it's bloody cold in Ottawa.

Here's the full nature article:
http://www.nature.com/news/2009/090204/full/news.2009.80.html
As usual, the media misses key points:

1) the article predict temps of 30-34 C, not just 33 as in the post link

2) Quote: "This range matches previous estimates from Palaeocene climate models that assume high atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations"

3) read the last para, again the assumptions are significant and could greatly reduce the temp, i.e. lower than 30 C but they don't specify these errors as they should have.

In the end, yes there were big snakes before, that's nice. What does it say about a tropic thermostat, well, nothing actually as the error bars are simply too large in my opinion!

But that's really no surprise for the level of science out there today!

But hey, that's just me and my little peeves about errors and honest accounting in science.

However, Kate's picture here is great, so what do we need here, an increase of 50 or 60 C for these snakes to start roaming around the Regina Plains?? Maybe they can catch some of these damn mule deers running around!

How many tractors/combines do I need to leave running 24/7/365 to achieve this?

I may need a little help in this effort!

It is warm and sunny in Nfld, with Danny Williams now the official leader of the liberal party of Canada.

Iggy just isn't a leader, he just can't get it done.

Syncro.....I have a 6 lb hunk of petrified wood...from....Ellsmere Island, found it north of Eureka back '86 on the tundra when I was in the Air Force, and we where doing a survey of the island for the new national park. The stuff is just laying around there like cordwood on a beach.Don't these "scientists" get the fact that it was a lot warmer 60 million years ago? And it will get warm again?

Paul, most of the snakes in Ottawa walk around on 2 legs.

Lot of oil in a big snake like that.

"Lot of oil in a big snake like that."

My thought also. Must have been a Liberal snake.

"Lot of oil in a big snake like that.

Darn, shaken. Please don't defame snakes by comparing them to Liberals. At least snakes serve a purpose.

So, apparently the flora and fauna of the planet adapt to differing climatic conditions (eco-systems). That the socialist/eco-warrior class does not believe that humans could also be able to adapt to changing conditions leaves one puzzled. That any change is portayed as unwanted is confusing. At times the charlatan disciples of the "green lobby"(what a waste of good colour) want the people to divest and shed all comforts, especially money, and to clothe themselves in the virginal white shroud of acceptance before turning to pure energy and assuming one's position in the galactic consensus, while at other times they would just like the folks to become polar bear food. The largest reptiles still walk among us selling the snake oil of man-made global warming.

A little off topic
Today it is currently -28 windchill -36 here in Owen Sound.

The largest land carnivore is a polar bear. Size limited by how warm it gets in the Artic?

Shallow thinking people are so much fun to laugh at.

A giant snake in the tropics. What will they find next, Dinosaurs in Alberta?

Earth to AGWs, paraphrasing Homer Simpson, "Temperature go, temperature go down, temperature go up... You get the picture right?

Giant snake fossil hints at a hotter future

let me get this straight....a fossil from millions of years ago will tell us that the future climate is getting warmer? so a smaller snake fossil would tell us that the climate is going to get cooler!!!!
OMG give your head a shake.

"The largest land carnivore is a polar bear. Size limited by how warm it gets in the Artic?"

Hmmm,, hangon now,, I thought the Kodiak was the largest carnivore, eh ?
,

If anything happens anywhere at anytime it is proof of massive global warming in our future. Science is so easy.

Oh yea, suppose to talk about the article.

Giant Fossil Snakes cause AGW.

Hmm, I wonder if Jason dug up any SUV's along side those snakes ?
,

Ratt. You are correct. The Kodiak is one big mother. However, they don't track and munch on humans like polars do.So let's see....Kodiaks live in Alaska, and being from Alberta, methinks they get pretty cool up there (Loved Skagway, great little town),so how warm before these guys are stalking deer/moose in downtown Edmonton? I hope they bring a snowplow with them!!!

The headline at one newspaper referred to "mammoth snake". I imagined a huge snake with fur and tusks. So I wonder how well a mammoth snake would fare against a polar bear.

I thought the earth was going to die when it became 3 degree warmer? That's what they told us. I'm guessing that history is proving that the earth can certainly take a lot more than that.

Imagine being a Grade 4 Teacher these days, trying to indoctrinate the kids with a known Hoax;

"But Teach, as you were talking, I Googled it on my iPod Touch - the whole wide world is laughing at people like you."

Aaa!...You call that a snake?...

I have the biggest snake!...

...Now all you ladies get in line...;-)

Hey Gene,

I can put mine up on my shoulders...

It's the smallest snakes that are the most dangerous to your health...

...And career.

This U of T idiot makes the usual junk science leap of faith (jumping to confusions).....postulating temperature by the size of a snake. The largest mammals historically were the ice age mega-fauna----so much for big criters indicating high temps.

If we wait long enough, perhaps they'll find a pack of fossilized giant SUVs (dinosuvs).

Perhaps a NeanderthAl Gore, too?

Sasquatch:

But the largest reptiles (dinos) were around when it was very hot. Maybe cold blooded animals do better in a warm climate. But since I don't see any giant reptiles around today, I still have doubts that we're actually warming up - considering it's f'ing cold here in Toronto.

Word appears to have gone out to the Radical Left Cabal that they should immediately stop saying "Global Warming" and instead now use "Climate Change". Yet when you press them about this latter term, they still talk about a dramatic increase in temperature in just a few years.

Has a Radical Leftist EVER apologized for ANY of their stupid utterings in the past? I sense not.

Incidentally, this instant terminology change is very similar to "liberal" changing to "progressive". Now that people are challenging them about how UNprogressive many of their policies are, they'll be in search of a new term. I have a suggestion: M-O-R-O-N ! ! !

Don't beat me Kate, I know this is off target, but do you guys have any Canadian Webcams that show live snow coverage, like maybe out in the country ?

Just wondering,,, we ain't had snow in Mt. Olive, Louisi-Yana in over 8 years and I just about forgot what it looks like.
,

'I thought the Kodiak was the largest carnivore, eh ?'

Both wrong .. Michael Moore is the largest carnivore in the world.

I thought Al Gore was the largest carnivore.

Screw that! I just want to know how hot it has to get before wimmen start taking their clothes off!
(heads off to fuel SUV...)

The major problem for me is science is starting to be like..irrelevant. When I was in a science setting I watched the decline. I saw the change from science to politics. It's got a great deal to do with my retirement. There is good science but you probably won't see it on the front page of a paper. Newsworthiness is what sells papers and not quality. The result I fear is that people are starting to see scientists as they do politicians, agenda driven.

There's science and then there's political science.

Both need to pass the most important test ... the test of time.

I would venture to say that political science, that which purports to predict the future based on science fiction, has seen its day.

In ancient times, a prophet had to be correct all the time in his prophecies. Otherwise, he would be held to account by the mob and stoned to death.

Today's purveyors of political science and their prophecies of doom and gloom will also lose credibility when their prophecies prove to be incorrect.

And, what will prove them incorrect? Science, of course.

Hey Guys, good call, from now on when debating AGW Supporters I will question them if they are using Pure Science or Political Science when they make their claim that Man is causing Climate Change.

I tell ya tho, the new nutcases I see out there on the WWW is the 'Man must Die to save the Planet Cult' those cats are scary. Wonder if they ever thought about taking themselves out to get the Planet jump-started back in the right direction.
,

"I'm tierd of these mutha f'n snakes in this mutha f'n cave!"

...if that was suppose to be a map of the Centre of the Universe, they are off by a few degree's north...

From above:

Word appears to have gone out to the Radical Left Cabal that they should immediately stop saying "Global Warming" and instead now use "Climate Change". Yet when you press them about this latter term, they still talk about a dramatic increase in temperature in just a few years.

That is so 2008.

Just a few days ago Al Gore addressed the US senate and used the term "climate crisis" no less than 8 times in less than 15 minutes.

Sorry Kate, but this story should have been posted under "Not waiting for the asteroid" as the Nude Socialist magazine has dropped all pretence of being an interesting, worhtwhile to read magazine. It is just an enviro-mentalist propaganda organ, like Nature.

Paul at February 5, 2009 3:10 AM

It is not cold in Ottawa. It is the hottest year in the past 12 months. You've got to get with the program, or no funding for you!!

How many tractors/combines do I need to leave running 24/7/365 to achieve this?

I may need a little help in this effort!

To celebrate Earth Day in April we always burn round bale plastic.

actually, that it was warmer back then surmise, has some legs, as a snake is cold blooded and dose not generate body heat, so it must absorb all it's heat from it's environment, and a 43 foot long by 2-1/2--3ft wide baby needs pretty hot environment

Animals size is dictated by the available food supply ..... that and natural selection.

Frankly I am annoyed that the New Scientist would bother with a piece of crap like this.

Some twerp BS student on a field project for brownie points goes to the media with a story ... which is unconfirmed by the way.. about a monster reptile fossil find ... then proceeds to make wild assed assertions about proving something or other about climate.

This is pure garbage and deserves to earn the twerp an academic goose egg.

That plus a boot up the ass.

I would love to get on the GW bandwagon but I simply can not see the downside to GW. Bring it on..please. This is Canada after all. One of the largest countries in the world with one of the coldest climates and smallest population. My banana seeds are on hold, just waiting to be planted. If everyone bought a Hummer it would really help out. Now is the time. Prices have never been better. Do it for the children.

I think its an "o" omen.
