Are Polar Bears Really Disappearing? (17 meg mp3)

A guy you'll never see on the CBC - polar bear biologist, Dr. Mitch Taylor (interviewed on John Gormley Live). I listened to most of it on the way to town yesterday - highly recommended. Now, if only there were a transcript!

If I understand his information, Dr. Taylor is saying that Canada has 13 polar bear populations (out of 19 worldwide). Within those 13, there are about 24,000 bears and the only decline has been in one of those populations to the tune of 162 bears. So the so-called devastation of the polar bear amounts to a loss of less than 1% and it appears to be very localized. Hopefully (although I wouldn't hold my breath) this information will make it out into the MSM and cool down some of the hysteria.

Polar bears are appearing in Alert, where they haven't been seen for 23 years (where 2 had to be shot as they where becoming a danger). Are they expanding their population and range? You bet your buns they are. Just ask any Inuit/Invaluit,etc, who live of the land north of 60,in either Canada,Alaska,Siberia,Greenland,or the Scandanavians. They will tell you the white bears of the the Great Father are definitly NOT decreasing.

Time to get our act together kids ! ! !

There must be a way that us conservatives(fiscal, not social)can muster our resources, and start running ads in the msm to counter the enviroretards "sky is falling" bulls@#$ !

Any ideas?

And on another wildlife note, The Washington Post narrowly missed an obvious headline opportunity:

Agree with you about the fcpp. Were I the head of Fox news Canada mark milke would have a weekly spot (as would nadim esmail of the Fraser institute.

It has long been very obvious with even a casual skimming of Dr Taylor's releases that he is the James Hansen of Polar Bears. He cherry picks and then misrepresents, then refers to a non-existant warming to justify his observations.
He is the anomoly....he is the lone voice...

Kingstonlad,

I don't think there is. We've tried really hard already. We have a Conservative government, a decimated Liberal party. The greens are rebuked and in decline.... and we still have the AGW emo nonsense. Even the right leaning papers (canwest etc) report Suzuki and Gore as if they're infallible.

We just need to limit the "solutions to global warming" to the people that want the solutions. ie Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver... the three cities where people wouldn't know nature if it bit them in the ass.

My 11-year-old daughter came home from school the other day and informed me that in a few years there will be no polar bears left. Apparently her teacher told the class that because of global warming, polar bears are almost extinct.

My daughter and I had a nice, long chat.

"Hopefully (although I wouldn't hold my breath) this information will make it out into the MSM and cool down some of the hysteria."

Heh. The problem is this information isn't exactly new. Ask any envirotard and they'll tell you the reason they want polar bears protected has nothing to do with actual realized population decline. Polar bears are the first species given protected status based on speculation.

May 14, 2008 (CBS)

"Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne cited dramatic declines in sea ice over the last three decades and projections of continued losses. These declines, he told a news conference, mean the polar bear is a species likely to be in danger of extinction in the near future."

No mention of actual polar bears dying.

Quote from the interview at FCPP
"I’d advise them that the truth always comes out. That the short-term pain of taking an unpopular position will more than pay for itself when you are seen to be objective, when you’re understood not to be overly influenced by the politics of the day, when you can demonstrate that your concern is for your constituents in the long term. So show some statesmanship."

Bobzorunkle .. well having an attack kitty probably won't help much. ACORNS, housing, where else would they go?

these agw idiots don't seem to realize that if it were indeed possible to make the planet cooler the end result would be burning more fuel to keep from freezing to death. shorter growing seasons resulting in less food. idiots.

Once again ... over time real science will defeat political science.

Ron in Kelowna, If we charged all of the teachers for preaching leftist propaganda, the courts would be over-run. All parents can do is engage their kids in discussion each and every school day to ensure that they get balanced information.

I worked 8 years in Canadian arctic.Sommers on islands ,winters on ice projects.Bright and dark.
Can tell few stories about Polar bears and melting ice.The Global Worming theory is a Hog Wash.

sasquatch:

I love reading the anonymous posters trying to convince us that they know more than a veteran scientist with a vast reputation of excellent work. And 9 times out of 10, the anonymous posters can't even write respectable English. Nor can they spell. I can't figure out how they see themselves as qualified know-it-alls.

But then, I'm not a scientist.

I found Dr. Taylor to be candid and a straight shooter. He told it like it is for the status of polar bear populations and discussed several possibilities for the causes of ice thinning. Where he had no information or was not an expert he said so. He also stated that he was not a climatologist. I do not think he was agenda driven other than his love of polar bears.

I choose to differ (I am a geoscientist trained in geology and environmental science) in regards to his views on carbon dioxide which he follows the lead of the IPCC.

My views are that:

1. the geologic and modern climatologic record indicate that the rise in carbon dioxide levels is a response to and not a precurser of global warming.

2. the focus on carbon dioxide as the premier villain in global warming betrays a bias towards blaming humankind and modern civilization for this effect. In fact, the chief greenhouse gas is water vapour which is 30 to 60 times more prevalent in the atmosphere. It is however, extremely difficult to blame humankind for atmospheric water vapour.

3. the chief villain in global warming seems to be extraterrestrial as other planets are experiencing similar warming responses at the same time as Earth. Since we are not there, humankind cannot be the cause.
