Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your delectation and pursuant to our Tuesday night vintage music show, here is the first known published recording of Enrico Caruso. He's performing the Studenti! Udite aria from Alberto Franchetti's opera Germania, in 1902 (1:57).
Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

This is comedy. NYU hippies protesting and barricading in the cafeteria. Take a drink whenever you hear "consensus discussions", "overturn the power structure through consensus" and a "rejection of non-consensus brutality".

The Republican's got their own slick hopey-changey visible minority dude to respond to Obama's speech. He spoke well, and made quite a few good points. I think the story about the sheriff during Katrina was a bit of a dirty jab at Bush.
Serious question: Any economists out there have any predictions about how Obama's new "Green" plan will affect the price of oil coming out of Northern Alberta?

Good thing for this guy that he's not Canadian or else his free speech would surely be shut down by the HRCs.
For years, I've rated Stoffer as one of the few (very few) sane members of the NDP caucus, and now he's suggesting that a Spanish captain (apparently with suicidal and homicidal tendencies) scuttled his vessel in the North Atlantic, in rough water, in winter. Holy shit, Peter! He's too young to be suffering from dementia, so I guess that he's just plain nuts.

*(Letters of Charles and Mary Anne Lamb)
I didn't watch Obama's speech because I can't stand pulpit evangelical preaching but I saw a bit of Jindal's Republican response.
Are the Republican's idiots? Are they falling into Obama's trap of racism? Obama uses racism to prevent dissent and criticism; he and his team have 'dripped' the theme that IF you criticize Obama, it's due to a deep unconscious racism on your part.
The uproar over that cartoon shows it; the focus is on Obama as a chimpanzee, utterly ignoring that this is a metaphor for stupidity and that Bush was regularly, daily, called ChimpBush. When you confront the Rev Sharpton etc with these facts, he ignores you. The result? You can't criticize Obama.
Equally, Obama's definition of 'bipartisan' isn't both parties working together. What it really means is that there is no dissent. The Republicans simply agree with everything he says.
Obama is a narcissist whose need to Control how people act takes precedence to policies, programs etc.
So, the Republicans fall into the trap. They present their very own 'visible minority' man, Jindal, to counter Obama's speech. But Jindal can't carry it off; his speech is wooden, uninspired and he reads it like a polished up Dion.
They needed someone like Linsday Graham or Mark Sanford - tough guys - to present the Republican image. But to fall into Obama's racist trap, ie, to try to show that their criticism of Obama has nothing to do with 'race' (white man criticizing) was the height of stupidity. Obama and the Democrats will use the race card whenever they can; they'll have their stooges (Sharpton and whoever) go out and claim whenever a criticism is made, that 'it's all about race'.
The Republicans will have to ignore this - and present simple, clear factual statements of dissent.

I am so disappointed in the complete lack of coverage by MSM of the Prime Minister's U.S. visit. There was a Canada.com piece re his meeting at the U.N. -- and a nice pic -- but as far as I can tell it is not showing up in the dailies. I think this is unfair to Canadians -- they do not get a balanced picture of Conservative initiatives. In addition, most Canadians love getting attention in the U.S. and would want to hear about his interviews -- so why the media black-out on this?
Cold canadian, I think it is wrong to call these protestors "NYU hippies". First of all, the main protestor apparently didn't even go to NYU. Secondly, I believe the correct term is "dirty smelly hippies".
For those that didn't follow the link, do so, it is a fine and highly amusing example of moonbattery in action.
Nicola Timmerman - thanks for ruining my day! Klein and Lewis in the same post. Ugh
I would LOVE to see Thomas Sowell debate Naomi Klein, I'm sure he doesn't have time for lightweights and fiction writers though
ET - yes, every time Obama said that in the past week "only small changes were needed for agreement", but that Republicans were "playing politics", and were not "working together" - I was yelling "Well, then make a bit of a concession in order to be seen to be work together, you control freak!!!!"
Also, CNN reported that 99% of respondents loved Obama's speech. I could only watch a brief bit last night before turning off the television - clearly the campaign continues, and this was just a modified stump speech - he was talking about the progress made in health care - and I guess the new code word for "the Bush years" is "the last ten years" - ie "we have made more progress in the first 100 days than the last ten years".
He REALLY needs to start acting "presidential". The mystique surrounding the job is evaporating quickly.
I think ET is onto something. So much so that yesterday, after I posted a comment about my disgust over CKNW's Bill Good incorrectly depicting Dennis Miller as an extreme right-wing nut, I received a comment ... asking how I could defend the publishing of the 'monkey cartoon' in the newspaper.
At the time, I just said "Huh?!?" but now it appears that legions of Obama supporters have the safety off and are ready to pull the trigger on the Race Card whenever they get the chance.
Imagine if we get 4 or 8 years of this nonsense. Their truly will be a race war in America if this continues.
Gag.

Thomas Sowell writes today about the potentially “fatal trajectory” our nation is on; and there is a lot of material for discussion in the issues he brings up. But one is of particular interest, because even the flawlessly logical and precise Dr. Sowell gets the wording wrong – as almost everyone does. He writes:
Democratic nations invariably put the proposition in Sowell’s terms: whether we are willing to die or not. But the Ugly Truth (neigh-h-h) is that the successful use of force for national security objectives depends not on being willing to die, but on being willing to kill...

Will the Rev. Al Sharptongue accuse Byrd of racism?

"Senator Byrd: Obama in power grab
Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.), the longest serving Democratic senator, is criticizing President Obama’s appointment of White House “czars” to oversee federal policy, saying these executive positions amount to a power grab by the executive branch.
In a letter to Obama on Wednesday, Byrd complained about Obama’s decision to create White House offices on health reform, urban affairs policy, and energy and climate change. Byrd said such positions “can threaten the Constitutional system of checks and balances. At the worst, White House staff have taken direction and control of programmatic areas that are the statutory responsibility of Senate-confirmed officials.”
While it's rare for Byrd to criticize a president in his own party, Byrd is a stern constitutional scholar who has always stood up for the legislative branch in its role in checking the power of the White House."

Commenter rface said:
"I hope he’s prepared for that KKK thing to blow up in his face now. He’s disagreed with a black man."
Bryd and others are right.
Obama is moving into a socialist nationalized governance that intrudes on States Rights and therefore, violates Amendment 10, which gives all, that's ALL, duties not specifiically outlined in the constitution as federal ...to the states.
It's good that a Democrat is saying this, for at the moment, it's the Republian governors (eg, Sanford and others) who have been expressing this concern.
And the 'you can't criticize a black man because that shows that you are really racist' is a strategy that will be used by the Obama team more and more and more.
Obama is a narcissist; his psychological need is to assure himself that HE is in control of how others act and react. Couple that with his socialism which is equally a form of central control - and his reliance on race, on misinforming people, on manipulating them...that's quite an explosive set of affairs.

I have to disagree with ET concerning Gov. Bobby Jindal. The 36 year old is a Rhodes scholar, an Oxford grad., not that that is critical except it portrays a certain level of intelligence. Since he defeated the unlamented former Gov. a Democrat the State has made great strides even in New Orleans where the same mayor remains who messed up in Katrina. The preparedness of the State to a natural disaster has been remarkably improved by Jindal. He is an up and comer in the Party. He is also a fiscal conservative.

BERLIN — General Motors Corp.'s unit Opel said Wednesday it will introduce extra shifts at a German plant after demand for its Corsa model soared thanks to a government bonus for buyers who scrap their old cars.
The government last month introduced a 2,500-euro (US$3,200) bonus for people who scrap aging cars and buy new ones. The effort to boost the ailing auto industry is part of a 50-billion-euro economic stimulus package for Europe's biggest economy."

mikew - you are missing my point. The rebuttal to Obama's speech was NOT supposed to be a campaign presentation for Jindal. It had nothing to do with him and I assure you that I'm aware of and respect Jindal as a governor, a politician and a Republian.
The response wasn't supposed to be a campaign speech for Jindal - not even as another 'visible minority' and a clear-headed politician - but a speech outlining the Republican Party. It was incorrect of the GOP to mix up and therefore muddle these two agendas: the Response of the Republican Party, and the attractiveness of Jindal as a politician. You DON'T MIX agendas.
As the reponse of only one agenda, the GOP to Obama, it was important that it be presented well...not just as written..but as felt. Jindal didn't do it. And saying that he is, himself, a good candidate for higher office is irrelevant. It wasn't supposed to be about him. That's adding another agenda.
The Republicans, by focusing on him, were in serious error.
He was difficult to follow because of his flat unfelt and wooden delivery. You know what it sounds like if someone is reading a text that they don't understand...so they are just reading the words in a kind of monotone... That's what it was like! So, you couldn't grasp what he was saying, couldn't visualize what he was talking about.
This was an important speech. Not for Jindal. For the Republican image as a strong political party. It failed to present that image...just an image of someone reading who had no understanding of what he was reading.
And note further, how Jindal DID move out of the fact that it ought to have been ONLY a Republican Party speech, and not a Jindal speech. That is, he aligned himself with Obama, telling people that his parents also came from a foreign country to America. He muddied two agendas.
I'm saying the Republicans picked him to counter the racism aspect of all of Obama's campaign strategies - and that this was a mistake.
Yes, Jindal has a great personal political record but last night's speech wasn't a campaign speech for him. It was the Republican Party's reaction to Obama - and had NOTHING to do with Jindal as a politician. It had to do with the Republican party and its agenda, its themes, its beliefs.
It required a PERFORMER - someone who could present the REPUBLICAN party's themes with passion, with simplicity, with clarity. That's all that was needed - a performer. Not a personal campaigner.
Jindal was wooden, dead, read the speech as written rather than as emotionally felt. It was terrible. That image that he presented ...made the Republican Party wooden, dead, reading from a script...and passively accepting the Democrat's below the scenes view that 'all white men are racists'.

Oleary stated Obama, last nite in his address made note that in his Budget there will be No Provisions, Oleary stated that this is Not true as there are 9,000 provisions in it.
o'leary also stated that Obama said 95% of Americans will see a Tax Refund, Oleary also pointed out that this is not True Either as 32% of Americans Pay No Federal Tax so how could they get a rebate for not paying & if they do then they are creating a welfare state.
