yet again... special k gets his a$$ handed to him...

"But in the interest of accuracy and authenticity, I'd like to point out to Warren that
it was his dearly beloved Michael Ignatieff who lived in the U.S. for 30 years, and
voted proudly with his pen from his public pedestal for former President Bush's
foreign policy on the war in Iraq and coercive torture techniques against enemy
combatants
. Sadly, it wasn't just one x. Many a letter was used by Ignatieff to
celebrate the Bush doctrine."

The chronology of the Canadian of Convenience - Michael Ignatieff:

Born of Immigrant parents in Canada and who then took him elsewhere when he was 6 years old.
Returned at 11 years old to attend private boarding school in Canada.
Remained to get his taxpayer subsidized further education at Canadian Universities for a few years and worked for two years at the University of BC where he was turned down on his request to become an Assistant Professor.
Left Canada and for the next 36 years lived in the UK, other parts of Europe and then the United States for 6 years.
Was "enticed" by Liberal backroom boys, Toronto lawyers, to return to Canada to save us from our heathen selves as our saviour and PM.
The "enticement" included a nice little visiting professorship , courtesy of the Canadian taxpayer at the University of Toronto while the plot to parachute him into the Liberal leadership role was unfurled to where it is today.

All told - the man is 61 years old and has spent less than 15 years in the country he now wants us to think he "gets",
Oh yeah.

Sorry - that should be Ignatieff was taken from Canada when he was 6 WEEKS old and did not return until he was 11. His formative years were not even here.

Obama was here for 8 hours, does that make him eligible for a premiere job? :)

"lorraine says... Returned at 11 years old to attend

more specifically... "upper canada college"... which is,
i believe, the most exclusive and expensive private
school in canada.

On a completely non-political note . . .

I'm just finishing up babysitting my uncle's little Shih Tzu for 3 weeks. Not being a pet owner myself, it has been a strange experience at times.

I has one pressing question: Do you think that dogs understand the concept of a telephone? In other words, when you're walking around with this small object up to your ear and apparently talking to yourself, what do you think the dog is thinking?

Robert; you can't task us with a question like that. Good God man, have some empathy.

'Arctic Sea Ice Underestimated for Weeks Due to Faulty Sensor

'Feb. 20 (Bloomberg) -- A glitch in satellite sensors caused scientists to underestimate the extent of Arctic sea ice by 500,000 square kilometers (193,000 square miles), a California- size area, the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center said.

'The error, due to a problem called “sensor drift,” began in early January and caused a slowly growing underestimation of sea ice extent until mid-February. That’s when “puzzled readers” alerted the NSIDC about data showing ice-covered areas as stretches of open ocean, the Boulder, Colorado-based group said on its Web site....

'...The recent error doesn’t change findings that Arctic ice is retreating, the NSIDC said...'

IMO I think a lot of dogs are like permanent mood monitors. They may not understand the intracacies (sp?) of human activity but they sense can sense the mood/feelings of the rest of the 'pack' and can act accordingly.

So, when are you going to get yourself a dog? ;-)

In other news...from the Canadian Mint website.

OTTAWA, ONTARIO – February 12, 2009 – The Royal Canadian Mint and Canada's Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium are inviting Canadians to celebrate the rich and storied history of the Olympic Winter Games by voting on the Top 10 Canadian Olympic Winter Moments of all time for a chance to win one of two trips for two to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

The Top 3 moments will be featured on 25-cent coins, each with a mintage of 22 million, and will enter into circulation in the fall of 2009, leading up to Vancouver 2010. The results of the Top 10 Canadian Olympic Winter Moments will be revealed in a one-hour prime-time broadcast special, in English and French, in September 2009 on CTV, TSN and RDS.

STOPIGGY.

I really think part of the Liberal strategy is to act as if Ignatieff is already prime minister. In Quebec we keep having photos and quoted from Iggy that sound like he is in charge now and federal projects and initiatives are his doing.

So the U.S. billboard thing doesn't surprise me.

From the province that gave us the banning of Oh Canada in the school, comes another brewing 'scandal'..from cbc site, and I'm sure Ormiston is on this as we speak!
NB Education Minister orders end to race-based Gr.4 assignment:
The assignment was based on the notion the planet was about to explode.
Students had 3 spaces on a rocket and had to decide which person they would save, among an Acadian francophone,a Chinese person,a black African,an English (this is a 'race'??)person, and an aboriginal.
Controversy began after aparent complained the assignment was 'better suited for a concentration camp employee'

Lets not get too hung up on the picture of Iggy and Obama on the Marquee in Times Square. He's trying to look like he's the PM of Canada, he's play acting and leaning heavily on "Hope". This makes him an impostor and a poseur.

He's hoping to continue his easy glide all the way into the top seat. He'd be better suited to US politics given he's spent more time there. He also agreed with Bush on Iraq and other matters.
I'd say he's in a state of confusion trying to be whatever it takes for power.

"Rebel Yell: Taxpayers Revolt Against Gimme-Mania
By Michelle Malkin • February 20, 2009 09:01 AM

My syndicated column reports on the growing, grass-roots movement against porkulus/spending binges/the entitlement culture from Seattle to Denver to Mesa, Arizona and beyond. Why aren’t you hearing about it in the MSM? Because it doesn’t fit the victim mentality/government savior narrative. We don’t exist, remember?

Well, more of you non-existent rebels will be gathering in Overland Park, Kansas tomorrow, Saturday, at Rep. Dennis Moore’s office (D-KS) at 10 am. You heard it here first. And it’s on. Reader Amanda Grosserode (now a commenter here - her handle is Huskergirl) got the ball rolling. Talk show host Darla Jaye is on board (more details here) and I hear Kansas Americans for Prosperity is getting involved.

There’s something in the air. It’s the smell of roasted pork. President Obama heralded the signing of the trillion-dollar “stimulus” bill in Denver and promoted his massive mortgage entitlement expansion in Mesa, Arizona at tightly-controlled campaign events. But outside the Secret Service perimeters, a raucous grass-roots rebellion against Beltway spending binges has caught fire. The new Boston Tea Party is here, baby, and it’s doused in barbecue sauce."

Re Ignatieff, on a point of information: his mother was not foreign born. She was Alison Grant, very much an insider of the Canadian Establishment: her father was headmaster of Upper Canada College. (Michael's father, George, was born in Georgia, and fled after the Bolshevik revolution. He was a kind and down to earth gentleman.)

I don't think UCC should be used against Ignatieff, UNLESS he tries an "Aw, shucks, I'm just a regular guy" routine. 'Not likely!

Today’s editorial cartoon in the National Post, “The Week [crossed out and changed to] 6 Hours in Review” is a hoot. I’m not the actual Prime Minister, but one day I will be . . . you’ll see . . .I’ll show you . . . I’ll show everyone . . .” As I said, it’s a hoot!

Robert W ...Feed me.

There's a case being argued now in Canadian courts in Montreal where a Said Namouh is on trial for 'contravening the Canadian criminal code', facing charges of conspiracy and promoting terrorism.

Namouh used the internet to encourage people to join al qaeda, to become 'jihadists', to kill 'the unjust', to set up a pan-Islamic world and so on.

"His lawyer insists that all of these actions are merely his right, under the rubric of freedom of expression and religion. He said that even though the beliefs of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden are "repugnant to hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people, still, are they not religious beliefs?"

Now wait. Our courts, i.e., the HRC, charged the Rev. Boissoin for HIS religion beliefs, charging him with 'spreading hatred' for his letter to the editor, outlining the Christian rejection of homosexuality. There was no violence urged, no outlines of how to make bombs, no insistence that the 'unjust' must be killed', as there is in this Namouh case. The fact that this letter fell under 'freedom of expression' and 'religious beliefs' was utterly irrelevant.

However, this case is arguing that internet urging of murder, mass killings, instructions on making bombs, threats of violence, hatred of any who are not of the same religion, is acceptable because - and only because - such actions fall within the agenda of a RELIGION! If these same actions are not the agenda of a religion, then, they'd be defined as terrorist.

Hmm. How is it that our courts can reject the right of Rev. Boissoin to write a letter to the editor expressing his Christian rejection of homosexuality - and yet - a lawyer in Canada can argue that promoting terrorism and mass murder on the internet is both a right of freedom of expression and a sacred belief of a religion?

And since when is religion not simply an outline of one's relationship to metaphysical forces but also an outline of one's social behaviour, one's political behaviour, one's economic behaviour?

The story is in the National Post under 'where do you draw the line'.

"Dissidents held during Clinton Beijing visit

By CHRISTOPHER BODEEN – 3 hours ago

BEIJING (AP) — More than a dozen Chinese dissidents have been questioned, followed or detained during U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's weekend visit to Beijing, fellow activists said Saturday.

The stepped-up controls come as international human rights groups expressed outrage over a statement by Clinton ahead of her Friday arrival that issues such as climate change, the world financial crisis and North Korea would likely take precedence over traditional U.S. concerns about human rights in her discussions.

Amnesty International said Clinton's remarks had damaged future U.S. initiatives to protect human rights in China. New York-based Human Rights Watch said progress on issues cited by Clinton could only be achieved through greater legal protections and press freedom.

"Secretary Clinton's remarks point to a diplomatic strategy that has worked well for the Chinese government — segregating human rights issues into a dead-end 'dialogue of the deaf,'" Human Rights Watch's Asia advocacy director Sophie Richardson said in an e-mailed statement.

Blacklisted author Yu Jie said Saturday a pair of plainclothes policemen visited him on Friday and said he would have to report all his movements to them in advance.

Yu said officers had demanded that he ride in a police car while traveling around the city, a form of monitoring that he was forced to endure for more than a month during the Beijing Olympics in August. Yu said he refused and they agreed to merely follow him while he drove his own vehicle."

I attended UCC from 1970-74. My dad was a schoolteacher, but I won a scholarship. Approximately 20% of the boys attending receive some form of financial aid. Do a lot of rich guys send their sons there? Yes, and sadly, many are thick as bricks. But the school unabashedly segregates boys into "A" forms and "B" forms. I was so glad, after leaving public school, to finally be in a class where most of the guys were on the same intellectual level as I was. It made for much more stimulating discussions, and of course, as a boys' school, I wasn't distracted by the micromini skirts the girls had worn in my Grade 9 class. My friends who stayed at the public high in Don Mills told me by Grade 11, they were getting stoned before class, and at lunch. I think my brain would have exploded in the mental vacuum of zoned out teens.

I always found it amusing that cocktail party socialist Steve Lewis sent his son to UCC. Are there schools in Toronto that have better educational standards? Undoubtedly - UTS comes to mind - but our best have been pretty d*mn good, from Stephen Leacock to Robertson Davies to David Gilmour in literature, from Timothy Eaton and his son John Craig (whose sons, alas, were some of the bricks I referred to) to Ted Rogers to Galen Weston to Kenneth Thomson in business, along with a generous helping of actors, athletes, doctors, etc. As the Beach Boys said "[I'm] true to my school".

I don't hold it against Iggy that he went to UCC; I hold it against him that he chose to leave Canada for so many years, and then comes back and expects a coronation. I bet the Tory war room is already preparing ads showing Iggy's speeches and letters supporting Iraq and torture.

CTV News Net reports that Obama has invited the GG to Washington for talks on the problems in Haiti and how the U.S. and Canada can work together to find solutions.

Isn't this further evidence that the man who thought Canada had a president knows nothing about us and how our parliamentary system of democracy works? The GG is not like the Secretary of State. She cannot advise the PM and the Canadian gov't on how foreign policy matters. She's a figurehead—there to promote Canada on a cultural level around the world.

BTW, on the issue of Obama thinking that Canada had a president... I find it fascinating that Bush, governor of Texas at the time and wanting to become president, was ridiculed for not knowing who the president of Turkmenistan was (or whichever former Soviet state was) but Obama, whose from a GREAT LAKES STATE (!), gets a free pass on his faux pas.

Things are definitely looking up for the Liberals when they can afford to put a picture of Iggy with Obama on a Marquee in Times Square.
