"Religious speculation upsets imam in case of beheaded woman

Nazim Mangera felt tears welling in his eyes as he said the final prayers over the body of Aasiya Z. Hassan around sunrise Tuesday morning.

Mangera wasn’t upset just by the loss of this vivacious, intelligent 37-year-old woman or by the vicious way that she was killed when she was beheaded Thursday.

He also was upset about suggestions that the Islamic religion may have had something to do with her death, that this may have been an “honor killing” tied to Muslim tradition or culture. Orchard Park police have charged her estranged husband, Muzzammil Hassan, 44, with her killing.

“We’re all shocked. We’re all grieving,” said Mangera, imam of the Islamic Society of the Niagara Frontier. “To compound that, we have to face the difficulty of the religion of Islam being blamed for [the killer’s] personal actions. It was an individual person who did this act, for whatever reason. We don’t find any justification in the Islamic religion for any such violence.”

Mangera was upset about suggestions that Muslim attitudes, especially toward women, have been blamed for the Hassan killing."

William Schlesinger on IPCC: “something on the order of 20 percent have had some dealing with climate.”
17 02 2009

This is a bit disturbing, though in retrospect, not surprising. One of our local IPCC wonks at Chico State University, Jeff Price, is a biologist, but lectures me about climate all the same. - Anthony

by Paul Chesser, Climate Strategies Watch

I had intended to return to this point when I originally posted about this debate last week, but time got away from me. Thankfully, my colleague Roy Cordato brought it up today:

During the question and answer session of last week’s William Schlesinger/John Christy global warming debate, (alarmist) Schlesinger was asked how many members of United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) were actual climate scientists. It is well known that many, if not most, of its members are not scientists at all. Its president, for example, is an economist.

This question came after Schlesinger had cited the IPCC as an authority for his position. His answer was quite telling.

First he broadened it to include not just climate scientists but also those who have had “some dealing with the climate.” His complete answer was that he thought, “something on the order of 20 percent have had some dealing with climate.” In other words, even IPCC worshiper Schlesinger now acknowledges that 80 percent of the IPCC membership had absolutely no dealing with the climate as part of their academic studies.

This shatters so much of the alarmists’ claim, as they almost always appeal to the IPCC as their ultimate authority."

If you want to express your disgust at threats of violence leading to the cancellation of the Plains of Abraham 250th Anniversary reenactment that was to be a fun, 'living history' event, that has the precedent of similar reenactments around the US and Europe from every period from ancient to modern to recall history (and not denigrate the "losers"), then here is the Province of Quebec tourism contact phone number:

Toll-free number from within Canada and the United States:
1 877 BONJOUR (1 877 266-5687)

And here is contact information for Québec City Tourism if you wish to make your feelings known there as well:
Phone: 1-877-783-1608 [North America only, I assume]
Non-toll-free Phone: (418) 641-6654 Fax: (418) 641-6578

I'd suggest saying you will boycott Quebec tourism as it is a place where tourists can be threatened with impunity.

A précis of the decision from the Toronto Star:
http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/article/589102

BTW, the 1760 Battle of Ste Foy on the same ground that the French one was also planned to be reenacted, not just to assuage "French" feelings but because it too happened and was to have been remembered.

on the same ground that the French one

Sorry, should read, "on the same ground that the French won...". (Mistook my 'one' as referring to the battle and not as my homonym typo of 'won' when I all-too-briefly proofread my post.)

Coming to a cable service near you: Al-Jazeera Canada.

"The English-language arm of controversial news channel Al-Jazeera is formally applying for approval to broadcast in Canada.... [Tony] Burman said he expected the broadcast application to be submitted this week to the CRTC.

"The review includes a 30-day period in which the CRTC asks Canadians what they think of the proposal."

In defense of those who oppose a reenactment of the battle I suspect that similar resistance would have occured if it was a reenactment of the 1945 battle of Berlin in Berlin. Losers do not appreciate having their noses rubbed in it no matter how harmless the intent.

I find it facinating how a leftist post TITLED "Obama's Canada trip: Can he undo the damage?" contains a not single word about any of Obama's actual policies. It's entirely and typically the same old useless fluffy platitude and Bush-bashing we all grew used to during the election campaign.
An absolute must read...
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/02/18/obamas-canada-trip-can-he_n_167819.html

Gord,I don't think that the real problem is people "having their nose rubbed in it" but the fact that the event was canceled because 'someone' didn't like it.----Anything can be offensive to anyone.Gay Pride parades are offensive to many, hilarious to others, and very deep for some. The point is that freedom is for everyone, not just those who feel special.Threats of violence should make us stand up,not roll over.

you're comparing the french under montcalm to the nazis?
boy, if you thought they were upset before...

Mr. Dresler [AC: he's an American, BTW], who has organized three other popular re-enactments in Quebec City, said he is stunned at how nationalist groups have hijacked the historic anniversary.

The previous stagings of the 1775 Battle of Quebec, when British and Canadian forces repulsed an attack by American revolutionaries, drew big crowds and went off without a hitch.

"It's crazy, it's not a political event, and it's never been," Mr. Dresler said. "It's not a slap in the face to anyone."

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20090214.wbattle0214/BNStory/National/

And if the above upsets the perpetually-offended, leading them to make the threat of violence, we should concede with a good grace?

So if this upsets the separatists' Brown Shirts, and they threaten to give the tourists and their children something to remember, should it be cancelled too?
Siege of Fort Niagara reenactment:
https://oldfortniagara.org/events/?Y=2009&n=07&j=03&e_id=102

The "real" French weren't offended by this:
http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2007-06-18-waterloo_N.htm

And Austrians aren't upset by an Austerlitz reenactment:
http://www.austerlitz2005.com/fr/actualites/

But the 1759 one (ignoring Ste Foy) is rubbing Quebec's noses in it? Fine, then they deserve the boycott of Quebec as a tourist destination that I'd like to help spark with this post.

Dear Knight,

Thank you for posting that HuffPo piece. It follows the precise script that Dennis Prager has described about all Leftist thinking: Invent a scenario and then shortly into your piece, start referring to your hypothesis as fact.

Undoubtedly 100% of the Kool-Aid CBC Krowd will adore Obama no matter what he ever does but as for this massive love-in with him, I just don't see it anymore.

Yo! Mr. Obama, Sir! Don't forget your passport. You'll need it to go home.

I don't know with whom I am more disgusted: the arrogant pussies that whined about a historical battle re-enactment or the pc pushovers who gave in. Playing out historical events has been part of man's culture for eons. Even primitive tribes in New Guini or the Amazon still communicate their history with dance or acting out battles or great achievements. I still fondly recall the many times as a kid re-enacting the Shootout At The OK Corral or the Alamo (all before supper of course). I could go on about all the re-enactments that go on all the time in the US but it would take up too much bandwidth.

Quebec, you lost on the Plains of Abraham, get over it. Lord knows the rest of Canada has been paying for that "victory" ever since.

was good for the GeorgeMcChimpyBushHitlergoose isnt good for the Obamamessiahgander.

Al Sharpton thinks its an opportunity.

Putin Warns US Democrats Against Socialism:

"We must not revert to isolationism and unrestrained economic egotism... Excessive intervention in economic activity and blind faith in the state's omnipotence is another possible mistake. True, the state's increased role in times of crisis is a natural reaction to market setbacks. Instead of streamlining market mechanisms, some are tempted to expand state economic intervention to the greatest possible extent... In the 20th century, the Soviet Union made the state's role absolute. In the long run, this made the Soviet economy totally uncompetitive. This lesson cost us dearly. I am sure nobody wants to see it repeated."

How about Lawrence Martin in his Globe & Mail column today opining our PM could be embarrassed on the Khadr file. Really? What happened on the "file" under his dear leader Chretien or Martin?
What's changed?

We all know what's changed is Conservatives are in power and they expect them to do the dirty work and take the fall in public opinion. We've lost many good men and one woman in the war against terrorism in Afghanistan. The Khadr's represent terrorism.

Most people in Canada don't give a rat's ass about any of the Khadr family and we'd prefer to see them all gone from our country. We know it will never happen.

The Liberal/Left want to play themselves as champions of human rights. Are terrorists concerned about human rights?

Je me souviens all the money that wasn't spent in Quebec due to the separtistes. When the economy worsens Je me souviens it is someone else's fault.

Afghanistan on the Brink: Assessing U.S. Strategic Options

Throughout the 2008 campaign, President Obama promised a renewed effort to address the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan. In the last year, insurgents have established control over large swaths of the country; the drug trade has escalated; and fighters, weapons, and other resources have continued to flow across the border from Pakistan. With critical Afghan elections scheduled later this year and the administration now poised to deploy tens of thousands of new forces into the country, the United States must take decisive steps to reorient its strategy in Afghanistan if it is to prevent the country from slipping further into chaos.

At this event, AEI scholars Thomas Donnelly, Frederick W. Kagan, and Gary J. Schmitt will be joined by Lieutenant General David Barno (U.S. Army, retired) to provide an overview of strategic challenges facing the United States and its partners in Afghanistan and assess the necessary components of a successful campaign plan for the coming year. Danielle Pletka, AEI's vice president for foreign and defense policy studies, will moderate.

"Political Correctness – A Cancer on Common Sense

It's probably my reaction to your reaction to the essay on the Death of Common Sense. It's opening my sometimes jaded eyes, to the hunger on your part for some push back to the biggest mind invasion of our generation, political correctness, which I will define here and now as The Oppression of the Independent Mind by those who would want to modify our behavior by controlling our thoughts and speech. If you are looking for my working definition to pass on to your friends and family and to work off of as you scan the news of the day, feel free to log on to our site, charlesadler.com and you will find it. Now let's be clear about what common sense is. It's a way of straight forward rational thinking and rational behavior based on what makes sense to a person who hasn't yet lost his human liberty. Common sense is a child of liberty.

Because of your reaction to the demise of common sense, liberty's child, the hills of my mind are alive with the pounding sound of the drum in the funeral march for our friend Liberty. Politically correct propaganda is always based on a big lie. And one of the liar's favourite terms is human dignity. We are told to change how we think and behave in order to preserve some group's human dignity. Folks, there is no such thing as human dignity for some, when human liberty is trashed for the many. This is why I wasn't backing down on my fight with the CBC who, as the chief media agent for political correctness in Canada, was spreading the venom that hiding our national anthem, downsizing it, relegating it, minimizing it, was going to enhance human dignity for one or two children whose religious values made exposure to the anthem very difficult. But that was last week's garbage.

Let's look at today's trash which I found in a British dumpster. The Headline reads, "Why instead of chasing criminals, are police asking children to write essays about Gay Pride?" I will be happy to link the story to our website. You can read all about how the Kent Constabulary is now holding an essay contest in celebration of LGBT month. That stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender month. The Kent Constabulary, a police service in the county of Kent wants to promote itself as a gay-friendly employer. Gay-friendly is a phrase that is meant to appease the PC police who have four unspoken declarations that result in suffocation of freedom of thought action.

Declaration number one: Society is homophobic; 2) the legally constituted authority known as the POLICE are homophobic; 3) the only way to cure the disease is to strongly encourage the hiring of openly gay employees and to participate in community programs to stamp out homophobia; and 4) any opposition to these policies which are in the interests of promoting human dignity among the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered communities will be publicly branded as homophobic - sanctions to follow. Now once again, what's so insidious about this is that the declarations are unspoken. You know the drill by now. News events create court cases, and they result in judgments and they result in various organizations, public and private, operating defensively, with lawyers telling them what to pro-actively do to avoid the land mines that get detonated when one transgresses political correctness."

"Murderous monkey ends up on top of beheaded woman

(Must see images of Google News search)

(IHateTheMedia.com Exclusive) We’re professional cynics at IHateTheMedia.com. We’re trained to expect the worst from the media. With that in mind, it seemed to us that the media had paid far more attention to the trivial story of Connecticut’s murderous monkey than the lightning rod story of Buffalo’s beheaded Muslim wife.

Is it possible, we wondered, that the media would intentionally ignore the kind of shocking crime story they normally love, simply because focusing on a murderous Muslim is politically incorrect in the land of liberal news?

So we performed a simple experiment. We searched Google News for both stories. Here, unfortunately, is what we found:"

(Via Azure) Philip J. Spencer, The left must stand up to anti-Semitism

There are a number of ways in which much of the left now refuses to engage seriously with anti-Semitism but rather helps to legitimate it...

(Via Azure) Howard Jacobson, Let’s see the 'criticism' of Israel for what it really is

...The very air was charred. It has been the same here these past couple of months with the fighting in Gaza. Only the air has been charred not with devastation but with hatred. And I don’t mean the hatred of the warring parties for each other. I mean the hatred of Israel expressed in our streets, on our campuses, in our newspapers, on our radios and televisions, and now in our theatres.

A discriminatory, over-and-above hatred, inexplicable in its hysteria and virulence whatever justification is adduced for it; an unreasoning, deranged and as far as I can see irreversible revulsion that is poisoning everything we are supposed to believe in here – the free exchange of opinions, the clear-headedness of thinkers and teachers, the fine tracery of social interdependence we call community relations, modernity of outlook, tolerance, truth. You can taste the toxins on your tongue.

But I am not allowed to ascribe any of this to anti-Semitism. It is, I am assured, “criticism” of Israel, pure and simple...

charles macdonald - ascribing criticism of Israel to anti-semitism is as illogical as ascribing criticism of Islam to 'Islamophobia'.

Both are and must be open to criticism. I strongly criticize Israel for its political policies. No country can be immune to such critique. I'm not interested in its dominant religion except where that religion plays a role in its political and social decisions.

However, I strongly criticize Islam as a religion for its rejection of reason, individualism and science, and for its removal of its ideology from questions and interpretation and therefore modernization.

I criticize Islamic fascism for, well, for being fascist, and for its refusal to acknowledge its root cause in the tribal political infrastructure of the ME.

None of this has a thing to do with anti-semitism or islamophobia.

Islam.

Taliban Jack has an 'interesting' comment about Afghanistan: "We support your call for a full strategic review of the mission in Afghanistan and the adoption of a much more comprehensive approach that respects human rights and places dialogue at the centre of a comprehensive peace process."
