Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your delectation, we have a very special show for you. Pursuant to our Friday night old-time radio crime detective show, to St. Valentine's Day, 2009, and to eighty years ago today, here is the delightful Mr. Dickie Goodman performing:
The Touchables, running 2:04, was originally released by Goodman on February 26, 1961, on Rori Music's Mark-X Records, pressing 8009. The B side of the 45-rpm single contains Goodman's Martian Melodies, which is a 33 1/3-rpm version of the same recording as the normal speed version of Martian Melody that was issued as Luniverse 105 on July 13, 1957. The copy of this disk that I have here in the studios lists Glazer and Aricin along with Goodman, but I have as yet not been able to find reference to either them in the Interwebothique.
Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

Well, it's official. Like Aqsa Pavez, the lives of two little girls have no determinate value in Canadian society.
Rather, the ethnic group to which their killer belongs trumps justice for their little souls.
Christopher Pauchay, the drunken father - or should I say, sperm contributor, has had multiples of convictions for drunkness related offences. He of course abandoned them after drinking and hey followed him into a freezing Saskatchewan night, only to die.
The measure of justice? An 'aboriginal justice circle' or 'healing circle' that (not surprisingly) reached the conclusion that jail time would not benefit the criminal nor his victims.
The sentance? Counselling and a substance abuse program.
Good job, native elders. Good job, Canada.
nice work Vit...usually i ain't into this medley mash stuff but that 45 rpm record struck a chord in my insides...i was as the perfessers say..."impacted to the very core of my beings"
and surprises of surprises if you forgive the elocution ....but i had no idea benny goodman was eyetalian.....that 'al cologne' bit put me wise...

I just saw this story -- non-story? -- story-about-a-non-story -- at ghostofaflea.com: The Globe and Mail had a reporter on scene during that York University "incident" when the mob menaced Jewish students and pounded on the doors yelling racial slurs, but somehow the reporter "did not think to mention the race riot in her coverage."
Odd. I know that a lot of, er, Central Canadian reporters think they're floating in an airless multicultural diorama, but still, what with the police being called and all, and the Jewish students being escorted out for their own safety, it's hard to believe that a reporter, who was not only there, but who wrote up a report on the "events" of that day, wouldn't event mention the, er, events of the day.
The commenters at theglobeandmail.com couldn't help but notice the un-reporting:
"Elizabeth...you forgot the part about the anti-semetic comments being screamed into the press conference, and the blatant intimidation of students by Arab students. You forgot the part when you were unable to leave the press conference because a bunch of hooligans were outside screaming anti-Israeli slogans. We are waiting for your story on the real issue..."
Another commenter: "So I guess having to huddle with Jews in an upstairs office to which you've been chased by a mob of over 100 people, yelling racist things at you, banging on the doors and glass trying to get in, yelling 'let's get them out!' well, I can see how maybe you might not think that's news. It's not like the police had to be called to get the students to safety. Oh wait...they DID....
"This is some of the most irresponsible reporting I've ever seen...."
Commenter Jermo Sapiens deadpanned: "Guys, you just don't get it: when Arab and Muslim students form a raging mob to attack Jewish students it's not news fit to be fed to the stupid masses. Besides, the Arab and Muslim students are just responding to colonialist aggression. We must search for the root causes!"

You beat me to it No Guff. I was thoroughly disgusted, although not surprised, by this story from the Canadian Press:
Chris Purdy, THE CANADIAN PRESS
ROSE VALLEY, Sask. - Native elders are recommending a Saskatchewan father serve a life sentence of spiritual guidance and healing instead of time behind bars for the freezing deaths of his two young girls.
Friend of USA - thanks (I guess) for the link
Hope it gets upgraded to the main page
Awful
No Guff, and Colin; well, what can be said. I'm also sure that he won't benefit by being behind bars. Neither will Conrad Black - and frankly, don't get me going on the latter's wrongful incarceration
What is justice? Where have we gone wrong?
I've complained before that the US has become a "prison industrial complex". One in three African-American males is either on parole, in jail, or on probation. They have kids. The kids get warehoused. Prison in the US is a growth industry. There was a story that broke a while ago about judges taking kickback in the US for sending kids to some juvenile detention facility. We shouldn't go down that road.
http://www.abajournal.com/news/pa._judges_admit_taking_2.6m_in_kickbacks_from_detention_center_owner/
What do we do?
It's a real mess. I find it hard to see a way out. I've mentioned before - we don't talk to each other, and say, "pick up that crap you just threw down", "don't talk to your kids like that", and "Kid, don't do that, or I'll tell your parents".
We have to look at root causes (please don't think I'm trying to lecture you guys, I know better than that, you know more than I about many thing, I'm just frustrated)
One of my favorite movies is Errol Morris' "Fog of War". Robert MacNamara speaks wonderfully. He was all about the data. Look at the data, analyze it, then implement fixes.
I like his stories about when he was at Ford, and long story short, he said let's make our cars safer - data analyzed - let's put in seat belts. MacNamara - data - solution.
OK - to my point (if I have one)
What are the difficulties with the current situation with natives? Yes, horrible things happened; as mentioned previously by me, two of my heroes are Crowfoot and Poundmaker, great representatives of a mistreated people. But, that was then, this is now.
The current situation isn't working. But it will never get addressed. Too many people are suckling at various teats for it to be fixed.
Get rid of reserves. We have to be Canadian.
Forget multi-culti.
We have to be Canadian.
If I see one more person say "oh, Canadian, you mean 'white'" I'll go crazy.
I mean, we have a country, many people built it, many people died for its ideals, let's be proud of it, and move together towards the future.
People were hurt in the past, boo freaking hoo
Let's go. Let's make this country great.
Erik, once again -- typically -- you continue to cloud the issues with rational thought.
When I was living in Vancouver about ten years ago there had been an ongoing discussion among a group of my friends about the problems in the aboriginal community. As I was listing the casualties in the downtown East side, and describing my certainty that there had to be reason for such an undeniable result, a musician I knew -- a very astute fellow -- said something that floored me: he said that we had lots of mutual friends who were aboriginal who were doing very well. I did an unintentional Terry Schiavo impersonation; I didn't know what the hell he was talking about. He proceeded to name people we both knew who were aboriginal. I had no idea; I thought they were, variously, Asian, or Persian, or Romanian, or Italian, or (?). Turns out they were Indian. I thought they were just Canadian.
It made me realize something: in order to be identified (by our prog-media, like CBC, for example) as Aboriginal, you have to be a ****-up. In other words, there's a profound circularity to the logic of the race-pimps: in order to be deemed authentically aboriginal by the statists, you have to be messed up; if you're not messing up -- if you do well, if you join the rest of society -- you're an inconvenient fact getting in the way of the funding narrative.
Perfect gig for the race pimps: define the situation in a way that ensures that that those who don't need the bureaucrats and the self-lauding apologist$ are not "aboriginal," and are therefore utterly irrelevant to the whole "aboriginal issue."
EBD - thanks for the interesting post.
As you may be able to deduce from my name - I am of Northern Germanic heritage (Norwegian, a bit of Swedish)
So what? My grandparents came here, and they were determined that we (my father and so forth) would speak English.
So we would be Canadian
And yet, I see all this multi-culti just destroying "our" nation - whether it's Hindu, Anglican, Zoroastrian, Lutheran, or "yoyo therapy"
Help
Let's all put our shoulder to the wheel - we as "Canadians" have a good thing going - with a lot of dead honest souls looking over our shoulders and shaking their heads - let's go!!!!

Muslims are somewhat backwards; they suffered so much under western colonialism; their anger at Israel is comprehensible; one should not weigh their every word.
Such racist assumptions must be implicit in the justifiably raging debate on the rehabilitation of Holocaust denier Bishop Richard Williamson. For there is an obvious question: Why is the moral-historical bar being set very high for the Pope and the Catholic Church, whereas in the case of thousands of imams and Islamic scholars it is consciously set extremely low? Why should a Catholic clergyman not be permitted to show contempt for the dead of Auschwitz when the “Holocaust lie” and the “fable of the gas chambers” are commonplace tropes in so many Friday prayers throughout the Muslim and Arab world?
...Bishop Richard Williamson should not be honored with a high office in the Catholic Church. He should be placed in quarantine — as should Hamas, whose charter makes the Jews responsible for World War II. If dialogue is not possible with Williamson, then it is certainly not possible with Hamas. Whoever complains about Williamson, but wants “somehow to include” Hamas, is lying to themselves and to the public.
The above commentary first appeared in German here on the website of the Berlin daily Der Tagesspiegel. The English translation is by John Rosenthal.
A good quote for this thread:
"We sit by and watch the barbarian. In the long stretches of peace we are not afraid. We are tickled by his irreverence, his comic inversion of our old certitudes and our fixed creed. We laugh."
"But as we laugh we are watched by large and awful faces from beyond; and on those faces there is no smile."

For all those lovers of history, the story of Valentines:
During the latter part of the third century A.D., Claudius was Emperor of Rome — Claudius II, that is. In what has to be one of the dumbest edicts ever devised, Claudius decided to outlaw marriage, thinking it would be more efficient to raise troops if he didn’t have to tear them away from their families.
On paper, this decree must have looked good to Claudius, and it’s doubtful anyone was willing to tell him how sand-poundingly stupid his idea really was. After all, what happens when you outlaw normal human behavior? Of course: normal human beings sneak around the corner and do it anyway.
Thus, young couples started showing up at the Bishop’s house — this was in Interamna, now Terni, Italy— asking to be married. The news quickly spread and Valentinus was called before Claudius to explain himself. At the time, Christians were not considered persona grata, so Claudius wanted to deal: if Valentinus would renounce his faith and his bishopric and stop this marriage business he could escape unharmed. Needless to say, Valentinus wasn’t having any.
Claudius ordered the Bishop to be martyred in three stages. I will spare you the details. While awaiting execution, it is said that he fell in love with his jailer’s daughter and that his love cured her blindness.
There are at least two martyrs named Valentinus, so parts of the legend probably have some fact. One of them is buried on the road to Rome...

Has the European backlash finally begun?
From the Guardian:
Yesterday at the parliament in The Hague there was traditional Dutch consensus between government and opposition on tougher measures to combat terrorism and racism and to crack down on immigration. Dozens of the country's 500 mosques may be closed down. It was proposed that only Dutch-trained imams be licensed to run mosques. The security and intelligence services are to be expanded. Police powers of search and arrest are to be expanded. Websites and broadcasters inciting hatred could be censored.
"It's better to have 10 possibly innocent people temporarily in jail than one with a bomb in the street," said Maxime Verhagen of the governing Christian Democrats.
.................
Better yet, if you can't tell the 'moderate' from the fanatic, why allow any into your country in the first place?
In Britain, Monty Python skits have become the source of reality:
"Woman arrested over 'golly' doll"
(Manchester Evening News)
A MUM claims she was arrested and had her DNA and fingerprints taken by police because she had a `golly' doll in the window of her home.
Amanda Schofield, 38, was quizzed by police on suspicion of racially-aggravated public order.
She claims the doll was put in the window by her young daughter, who found it in a bag of toys.
But police say she was arrested after a series of complaints of alleged racially-aggravated behaviour were made against her.
She was released without charge after being questioned.
Amanda, from Borrowdale Road, Heavily, Stockport, said she has been forced to sell the toy because of the incident.
Amanda said: "I feel like a criminal for something my daughter did. I just can't believe that I got arrested for a petty thing like that."
I wonder if Hilary will ever re-pay herself.

From the "News You Won't See On The National" file,
Hamas murder campaign in Gaza exposed.
"Hamas forces and militias were involved in a 'campaign of abductions, deliberate and unlawful killings, torture and death threats against those they accuse of 'collaborating' with Israel, as well as opponents and critics'. (Amnesty International) said at least two dozen men had been shot by Hamas since the end of December and 'scores of others' shot in the legs, kneecapped or beaten. Amnesty gave detailed accounts of some of the cases and said there was "incontrovertible evidence" that Hamas security forces and militia were 'responsible for grave human rights abuses'. Hamas officials have admitted hunting for suspected collaborators, but they have denied this campaign of attacks.
"Hamas apparently fears it lost some of its control in Gaza during Israel's devastating three-week war and launched a new and violent crackdown to enforce its rule, targeting not only those suspected of giving information to the Israeli military but also escaped prisoners and all perceived internal opponents."
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/feb/13/hamas-gaza-murders-abduction-torture
"It has incestuous, pig-breeding, drunken Irishmen, snooty Frenchmen, farcical Jewish anarchists and the animated presence of a mad mullah ranting about how women must be subservient to men. It reminded the Daily Telegraph of the Carry On films and the London Evening Standard of 'the slick, cruel, abusive style that Bernard Manning perfected ages ago'."
Can you see where this one's headed? Yep:
"A delegation of writers and community activists from the East End will meet on Friday with Nicholas Hytner, the National's director who is also directing the play, to protest against what they regard as a caricature of Britain's racial history.
"'The National represents modern Britain, and in particular London, and I don't see how Muslims can identify with the National Theatre when it puts on this kind of racist work,' Hussain Ismail, a playwright from Bethnal Green who has demanded the meeting with Hytner, told the Guardian. 'It is offensive towards ethnic minorities. It is particularly offensive towards the Irish and Bangladeshis. Those involved in this production need to explain themselves and be brought to account.'" (emph. mine)
Ever notice how it's only the host culture that "needs to explain" itself or "be brought to account"?

A REMOTE community in the Amazon stands to be given millions of pounds to stop cutting down its rainforest after being chosen by both the Conservative party and one of the world’s biggest hotel groups to offset their carbon emissions.
A total of 322 families living in the Juma reserve in the Brazilian state of Amazonas will each receive a monthly allowance in return for pledging zero deforestation.
The Tories decided to support the project after a visit in December by Greg Barker, shadow environment minister, on a fact-finding mission. “Nothing we can do to fight climate change will succeed unless we can reverse the alarming deforestation across the world,” he said.

*It was the sale of a particular indulgence that spurred Luther to action. Pope Leo X had authorized the sale of special jubilee indulgences in the cities and principalities of Germany. Half of the money raised was to help finance the building of Saint Peter's Cathedral in Rome; the other half was to go to Albrecht, the new archbishop of Mainz (who needed the cash to pay off a loan he had taken to buy his archbishopric). These indulgences were plenary, meaning that all sin and eternal and temporal punishment would be forgiven to those who purchased them. Elector Frederick the Wise, prince of Saxony and patron of the University of Wittenberg, had prohibited the traffic of these indulgences in his territory, but they were sold in towns and villages just across the Saxon border. When some members of his parish purchased indulgences and brought them to Luther for his assessment of their validity, he felt compelled to act."

"Satellite tracker feels Siberian crash proves need for his service
When two satellites collided for the first time over Siberia earlier this week, Michael Earl was more than a little interested.
The Brockville resident has been trying to sell his services as a satellite tracker, and was even told by one firm in the industry that satellites would have to collide in orbit before anyone would be interested in his proposal.
On Tuesday, that's exactly what happened, some 800 kilometres over Siberia, when a derelict Russian satellite designed for military communications and a working U.S. Iridium satellite, serving commercial customers and the U.S. Department of Defence, were involved in the first-ever orbital smashup.
"I can only say it unfortunately proves my point," Earl said Thursday.
Earl, 38, who also teaches astronomy at St. Lawrence College's Brockville campus, runs a one-man company called Canadian Satellite Tracking and Orbit Research (CASTOR), and is currently trying to drum up business tracking satellites and offering consulting services for building satellite tracking facilities.
In fact, Earl even e-mailed Iridium in December soliciting work, to no avail.
Iridium spokesman Elizabeth Mailander said Thursday the firm is not looking at any contracts with new service providers.
"We have what we believe to be sufficient information, notwithstanding an unfortunate event that occurred," she said.
But that unfortunate event has now thrust satellites - machines we have all come to take for granted - very much into the spotlight, said Earl.
"I believe that this type of work is going to be one of the most lucrative businesses of the 21st century," he said, adding there are enough talented astronomers in the world to track the orbits of the larger satellites, providing information that could avert another collision.
Earl's own website (www.castor2.ca) has images (appearing as points of light in the sky, with time and location data) of both the satellites involved in the collision."

"Here's What $800 Billion Buys Today
The final stimulus package is the final insult to taxpayers.
The final version of the stimulus bill is ready to be voted on by the House and the Senate.
Here's the good news: The $246 million tax credit to Hollywood that made its way to the initial House bill and was removed in the Senate version didn't make it to the final bill.
That's pretty much it for the good news.
Total spending amounts to $792 billion, with $570 billion in direct spending and $212 billion in tax provisions. These numbers don't include the massive amount of interest that will accrue on the increased debt. If we include that, the total amount comes to $1.14 trillion.
Supporters of the package describe the legislation as transportation and infrastructure investment, the idea being to use new spending to put America back to work while at the same time fixing decrepit infrastructure. However, only 17 percent of the discretionary spending in this package is for infrastructure items. More worrisome still, the final version lacks any mechanism to ensure that spending will be targeted toward infrastructure projects with high economic returns.
The conference report dedicates 30 percent of all discretionary spending to 33 new programs totaling $95 billion and expands 73 programs which are normally part of the regular appropriations process by $92 billion.
In one interesting twist, the conference committee dropped many of the prohibitions included in the version passed by the Senate. These prohibitions were the result of an amendment sponsored by Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) last week. The Senate voted 73-24 to prohibit wasteful or low-priority spending items from the bill. The amendment read as follows:
None of the amounts appropriated or otherwise made available by this Act may be used for any casino or other gambling establishment, aquarium, zoo, golf course, swimming pool, stadium, community park, museum, theater, art center, and highway beautification project.
However, the conference version includes the following provision, which drops many of the prohibitions from that list.
SEC. 1604. none of the funds appropriated or otherwise made available in this Act may be used by any State or local government, or any private entity for any casino or other gambling establishment, aquarium, zoo, golf course, or swimming pool.
So now funds can go to museums, stadiums, arts centers, theaters, parks, or highway beautification projects. Most significantly, this reopens the door for many of the projects on the U.S. Conference of Mayors' wish list of "shovel ready" projects that includes many items that are nothing but waste and pork, such as doorbells, construction of dog parks, replacement of street lights, and money for a "mob museum."
To get a sense of what made it through the supposedly thorough "scrubbing" process, consider the following povisions:
#
$24 million for United States Department of Agriculture buildings and rent
#
$176 million for renovating Agricultural Research Service buildings
#
$290 million for flood prevention
# $50 million for watershed rehabilitation
# $1.4 billion for wastewater disposal programs
# $295 million for administrative expenses associated with food stamp programs
# $1 billion for the 2010 Census
# $200 million for public computer centers at community colleges and libraries
# $650 million for the digital TV converter box coupon program
# $2 billion for Byrne Justice Assistance Grant program
# $10 million to combat Mexican gunrunners"
