Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your delectation and pursuant to our Sunday night classical music show, here are Yo-Yo Ma, Emanuel Ax, and Pamela Frank performing the third movement of Frédéric Chopin's Trio in G Minor for violin, cello, and piano, Op. 8 (5:39).
We also have an extra treat tonight, a wee bit of classical music comedy. Here is the only known footage from the playing of the world's only pipe organ with an open 128 foot pipe, which would be a fundamental frequency of 4 Hertz, for those of you keeping score at home (1:29 ;-)
Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

UK diplomat, not very diplomatic.
Middle East expert Rowan Laxton, 47, was watching TV reports of the Israeli attack on Gaza as he used an exercise bike in a gym.
Stunned staff and gym members allegedly heard him shout: 'F**king Israelis, f**king Jews'. It is alleged he also said Israeli soldiers should be 'wiped off the face of the earth'.

I often hear, both here and on the street - so why do you think Bloggers are so much smarter than Journalists ? I don't. Some, maybe most Bloggers are nuts.
And yes, blogs will come and blogs will go. The point is, you can go click zap to a blog if it does not perform. You simply move your mouse a fraction of an inch and go to one that DOES perform.
BTW, that includes moving from a major, multi $billion dollar media org site to a computer-on-a-pail blog.
Before the Internet, it was not possible to easily move from a poor news source to a good one. There simply were no good ones readily available. It was as if they all took their marching orders from the likes of Reuters, AP, Thompson. Or the headline writers.
Yes, blogs are not necessarily better than the MSM. Some blogs stink. Those will not survive. Before blogs, we had just a handful of different takes, spin. All of them virtually the same. Dumbed-down. It took days, weeks of searching to find alternative takes. Today ? Click - thousands of takes in a split second. Some are wrong. Some are junk. Some are bang on !! Nothing, but nothing beats comparison shopping.

Was considering Obama's upcoming spending orgy, and was trying to wrap my head around 800 billion.
800 billion fleas would weigh about 70,000 tonnes, or the same amount as 30 St. Marys Axe, a 41 floor building in London.
800 billion grains of rice would cover a Canadian football field to a depth of 4 metres. (Or an American field to 14.5 feet, for NFL fans.) That's before cooking!
This is the one that got me. 800 billion seconds ago, the year was about 23,300 BC, and the last glacial period was still some 12,000 years from ending.
No good can come from this. I just blew an hour trying to figure all of this out, and that's one hour that I'll never be able to use to generate GDP. Obama's plan is already killing capitalism!

The Congressional Budget Office even says the Obama Stimulus will actually hurt, not help, the economy.
So if the Democrat Party experts say no stimulus package is needed and the Republican Party says no Stimulus Plan is needed then why is $800 billion ($3,000 per person) about to be borrowed for this purpose? The world has gone mad.

The Federal Reserve, Treasury Department and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation have lent or spent almost $3 trillion over the past two years and pledged to provide up to $5.7 trillion more if needed. The total already tapped has decreased about 1 percent since November, mostly because foreign central banks are using fewer dollars in currency-exchange.

More analysis of Obama, from riggword's blog:
"I believe that President Obama does not expect people to resist him. He feels that he has a mandate and a right to run through his programs and plans without resistance from the American people or the congress. He expected his so called “stimulus package” to fly through the congress with little or no problems. Now that he has gotten just the slightest negative response he is throwing a tantrum. His demeanor shows that he cannot handle confrontation."
I agree except for one point; I don't think that Obama has 'a program'. He doesn't have a clear sense of the infrastructue of the economy, the nation, the history, the future. His focus is only on himself and his ability to put people under his control.
The so-called 'stimulus package' which has nothing to do with benefiting the economy, was written by Reid and Pelosi; they are the ones with the agenda, both of extreme big government socialism and rewarding their networked faithfuls.
Obama himself doesn't have the ability or desire to evaluate or analyze and thus, judge their package. What he wanted was something called a 'stimulus package'. He's a salesman; his agenda is to make you buy it regardless of its value. He wants it passed quickly for two reason. One, is his pyschological need to ensure himself that he controls you; the other is that the economy will on its own resurge and he'll take credit.
His inability to handle confrontation, questions, rebuttals will become more obvious in the coming weeks and months.

"Theodore Dalrymple: The Persistence of Ideology - Grand ideas still drive history.
In 1960, the sociologist Daniel Bell published The End of Ideology, in which he argued that ideology—understood in the sense of a coherent, single-minded philosophical outlook or system of abstractions intended as much as a lever to change society as a description to explain it—was dead, at least in the West, and in the United States in particular. A combination of democracy and mass prosperity had “solved” the political question that had agitated humanity since the time of Plato. There were to be no more grand and transformative, if woefully erroneous, ideas; all that remained was public administration, with, at most, squabbles over small details of policy. The new version of the old saw, mens sana in corpore sano, a sound mind in a sound body, was a capitalist economy in a liberal democratic polity. That was the lesson of history.
In 1989, as the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe were reforming—indeed collapsing—so rapidly that it became clear that Communism could not long survive anywhere in Europe, Francis Fukuyama went one step beyond Bell and wrote an essay for The National Interest titled “The End of History?” In this soon-to-be-famous article, later expanded into a book, Fukuyama suggested that the end of ideology that Bell saw in the West was now global. By “the end of history,” he did not mean the end of events, of course; one team or another would continue to win the Super Bowl, and there might yet be wars between national rivals. But broadly, history had given its lesson and mankind had taken it. Henceforth, those who resisted the march of liberal democracy were like the Luddites, those English workers at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution who smashed machines, blaming them for destroying the independent livelihoods of workers at home.
At the end of his essay, however, Fukuyama—more concerned to understand the world than to change it, by contrast with Marx—implicitly raised the question of the role of ideology in the world’s moral economy. With no ideological struggles to occupy their minds, what will intellectuals have to do or think about?"

"Priest uncovering beginnings of *Final Solution
KIEV, Ukraine – The Holocaust has a landscape engraved in the mind's eye: barbed-wire fences, gas chambers, furnaces.
Less known is the "Holocaust by Bullets," in which over 2 million Jews were gunned down in towns and villages across Ukraine, Belarus and Russia. Their part in the Nazis' Final Solution has been under-researched, their bodies left unidentified in unmarked mass graves.
"Shoah," French filmmaker Claude Lanzmann's documentary, stands as the 20th century's epic visual record of the Holocaust. Now another Frenchman, a Catholic priest named Patrick Desbois, is filling in a different part of the picture.
Desbois says he has interviewed more than 800 eyewitnesses and pinpointed hundreds of mass graves strewn around dusty fields in the former Soviet Union. The result is a book, "The Holocaust by Bullets," and an exhibition through March 15 at New York's Museum of Jewish Heritage.
Brought to Ukraine by a twist of fate, Desbois has spent seven years trying to document the truth, honor the dead, relieve witnesses of their pain and guilt and prevent future acts of genocide.
Some 1.4 million of Soviet Ukraine's 2.4 million Jews were executed, starved to death or died of disease during the war. Another 550,000-650,000 Soviet Jews were killed in Belarus and up to 140,000 in Russia, according to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. Most of the victims were women, children and the elderly.
Begun after Germany invaded the Soviet Union in June 1941, the slaughter by bullets was the opening phase of what became the Nazis' Final Solution with its factories of death operating in Auschwitz and other camps, all in Nazi-occupied Poland."

ron - it would only be a successful terrorist act if it was clear that the fires were indeed started by terrorists. And since, so far, none have come forth to claim responsibility, then, this 'result' is unclear.
On a different issue, I've been curious to see how Democratic blogs are treating Obama and the 'stimulus package'. The 'Republican' blogs have been strongly criticizing the content, focusing on specific items in the package, claiming that it won't create jobs; that it simply increases government dependency, that many programs are irrelevant to economic growth and so on.
The Democratic blogs say nothing, absolutely nothing, about the content of the package. They don't question it; they accept it in full without a single word about any of its programs. Makes me wonder if they've even read it. No, their focus is quite different.
Their focus is POWER. The POWER to make the Republicans, who are referred to constantly, pass the bill. Or, if they don't bow down and pass it, to punish them. Many even say that they know that the House and even the Senate don't need Republians or many R's to pass the bill. That isn't the point. The point is to make the Republicans Feel The Power of Obama.
Obama is defined as The Wise One, Setting the Stage for the Republians to be seen as 'mean and anti-American' for not promoting this 'economic package', as being anti-American for being against jobs, being against helping Americans.
Not a word, not one word, that this particular plan won't provide jobs, won't help the economy, will increase the debt of the future beyond imagining. Not a word about the content of the plan. It's all about Power.

[WHITTLESEA, Australia (AP) - Suspicions that some of Australia's worst wildfires ever were deliberately set led police to declare crime scenes in incinerated towns on Monday, and a clearly emotional prime minister likened the alleged arson to mass murder. The death toll stood at 131.
The scale of the carnage, growing daily, has shocked a nation that endures deadly firestorms every few years. There were no quick answers, but officials said panic and the freight-train speed of the firefront probably accounted for the unusually high toll.
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, visibly upset during a television interview, reflected the country's disgust at the idea that arsonists may have set some of the 400 fires that devastated Victoria state, or helped them jump containment lines.
"What do you say about anyone like that?" Rudd said. "There's no words to describe it, other than it's mass murder."]

"Drone strikes killed high-value targets, US tells Pakistan
By Anwar Iqbal
WASHINGTON, Feb 8: The United States wants to continue drone strikes inside Pakistan’s tribal areas because US military experts believe the strikes have killed a large number of Al Qaeda leaders and local militants and have destroyed their hideouts.
A US account of the strikes, conveyed to Pakistan and obtained by Dawn, depicts a picture which is very different from the public perception in Pakistan that the strikes only kill innocent civilians and children.
The document includes information conveyed to Washington by US military officials in Afghanistan about more than a dozen drone attacks carried out by US unmanned aircraft since December 2007.
The document identifies militant leaders as HVT or high value targets.
According to this document, on Dec 3, 2007, a Predator strike injured Shaykh Issa al-Masri in Jani Khel, Bannu.
On Jan 28, 2008, a Predator killed HVT Abu Layth Al-Libi and associates in Salam Kot, North Waziristan." (more)

Islamic group urges forest fire jihad
"Scholars have justified chopping down and burning the infidels' forests when they do the same to our lands."

"Islam group urges forest fire jihad," by Josh Gordon for The Age, September 7 (thanks to Morgaan Sinclair):
AUSTRALIA has been singled out as a target for "forest jihad" by a group of Islamic extremists urging Muslims to deliberately light bushfires as a weapon of terror.
US intelligence channels earlier this year identified a website calling on Muslims in Australia, the US, Europe and Russia to "start forest fires", claiming "scholars have justified chopping down and burning the infidels' forests when they do the same to our lands".
The website, posted by a group called the Al-Ikhlas Islamic Network, argues in Arabic that lighting fires is an effective form of terrorism justified in Islamic law under the "eye for an eye" doctrine....

"A few weeks ago, a study led by Professor Eric Steig caused some excitement by claiming that actually West Antarctica was warming so much that it more than made up for the cooling in East Antarctica. ...
Various scientists immediately spotted the flaw in Steig’s methodology of combining satellite evidence since 1979 with temperature readings from surface weather stations. The flaw they identified was that, since Antarctica has so few weather stations, the computer Steig used was programmed to guess what data they would have produced had such stations existed. In other words, the findings that caused such excitement were based on data that had been made up."
