Conservative Canadian Coup de Tat

Why Americans should consider moving to Canada.

And why Canada should let them.

We'd welcome American Conservatives to the Great White North, but could the US afford such a drop in their citizens' average intelligence at such a critical juncture in their history?

If you plan on moving to Canader, I'd recommend you make an appointment now for the doctor who will refer you to a specialist who will book you an MRI. Provided you live that long, of course.

Remember too that every conservative vote has ten times the value that it does in the US since the population is ten times lower.

So far, all we've got from the US are draft dodgers and lefty academics.

The financial stats Captain posts are compelling. However for any American seriously considering migrating north here's my checklist:

1. Bring your iPod. Canadian content rules on radio will guarantee your ears are continually assaulted by the whiny droning of Anne Murray, Gordon Lightfoot and Bryan Adams. Never heard of them? There's a reason!

2. It's cold up there. Don't go for a look in August, try it in January before you decide!

3. Your spellchecker will have to be replaced. They write funny. Hounestly!

4. Temperature is mostly very cool to frigid to freezeurballsoff.

5. You can't get decent Mexican food 'cause they don't have any Mexicans. Similarly, roofing costs are a bitch!

6. No more six-pak football games. Two Canuck beers will set you flat on your ass.

7. If you go to the beach wear a wet suit, it's terribly cold up there.

Love from Texas!

uncle ken: What, no Burton Cummings on your list?

I'm OK with Americans coming here to live but we should do an "exchange" rather than just the traffic be one way.

We'll take Halle Berry, Elie Manning, Kurt Warner and Rudolph Giuliani in exchange for Gilles Dusceppe, Taliban Jack, David Suzuki and Barbara Hall. In fact we'll even give them back Igantieff for free. (Manning and Warner have to play for the Riders)

The only proviso is that they have to keep "Father of the Year" Alec Baldwin.

Being half-Canadian (Mum...born in Bancroft, ON), I'd long considered moving up. I have plenty of relatives who I presume could be sponsors of mine. But just one question: Would I need to sell my guns before showing up at the border?

Western Canada is short of citizens that are looking to make a comfortable living and life by working hard, honestly and productively. People that speak the language, English, would be very appreciated as entering the work force would be so much easier. If the war against oil and coal stops and common sense prevails there should be room for about five million of these future citizens in Western Canada. Although everyone receives heath care it is by no means "free", you do pay dearly through your taxes for this privilege. Please come, future tax-paying citizens that live here are always welcome.

Note to Uncle Ken:: Due to the calamity of Global Warming "freezeurballsoff" temperatures no longer exist. Any teperature readings in the -40 range are now just an anomoly or bad science, the debate is over.

Hey Western Canada....give Ontario some of those hard-working entrepreneurs. It would be great if people like this came to Windsor, ON (now that the auto giants are dying and displacing them with their non-unionized businesses)...It would also be great if the really high flyers started making in-roads in our corporate boards to add a little bit more aggressiveness to our companies for getting and keeping business overseas.

Then when the country is fully employed...we can lower income and business taxes even more...making Canada even more attractive to people who want work and people who want to start businesses.

~~favill~~

Canada take in "smart, productive hard working" immigrants from America?

Where have you people reading this story been for the last 30 years?

Huh?

Our immigration policy for 30 years STRAIGHT has been to import non-white 3rd worlders that promise to vote for the Liberal party of Canada!

That's been the government policy even when the Conservatives have been in power!

Hey Mr.g,

I'm one of those "non-white 3rd worlders" you mention. However, since I was old enough to vote (I'm 43) I've voted Conservative or Reform. I'm also in the military. Stop stereotyping. Furthermore, do you think there just may be some non-white folks from the US who want to work and pay taxes here in Canada or even better start their own business? Last time I checked, the desire to make a better life for oneself and to have pride in one's achievement is not an exclusively "white" trait.

By the way, having grown up in Windsor...the majority of white people I know have union jobs (and are the most vociferous on behalf of the union)and the majority of people on welfare are white. And they all vote either NDP or Lieberal.

~~favill~~

LMAO!! It just occurred to me that if we opened the doors wide to immigration of business minded Americans, suddenly all the leftists in Canada would start sounding all anti-immigration, anti cultural mosaic, and anti diversity. Oh yeah!! Lets do it! Just the reaction on the CBC would be worth it.

Um, I don't normally do this, but...

...it's spelled "coup d'état."

Ah, that felt good — my inner spelling geek is satisfied.

And by the by, we already have a place in Canada where hordes of American expats come to help us with our standard of living.  It's called "Calgary."  ;-)

Garth
(and I'm proud to live there, too...)

Favill makes a good point. I can honestly say that the a great many of the Asian immigrants I know (especially the Chinese) are pro business, and conservative both socially and fiscally. But then, I don't live in Toronto either.

I had a conversation with a friend of mine from Iowa last March about the tax rate differential between Canada and the US. I was really surprised to find out that Canada had a distinct advantage. The Captain has supplied additional economic reasons that make Canada attractive but the big deterrent is still the winter weather but that's a wash for people from Montana, North Dakota and Minnesota.

Our bureaucrats probably wouldn't let them in unless they were deserters from the US military.

Billygoat, sponsors are no longer a requirement.Since you are half Canuck seek dual citizenship.

By the way, having grown up in Windsor...the majority of white people I know have union jobs (and are the most vociferous on behalf of the union)and the majority of people on welfare are white. And they all vote either NDP or Lieberal.
~~favill~~

Sounds like Hamilton. Windsor is about to go through what Hamilton went through when the steel, and manufacturing companies left. Over 30% of the population lives in poverty and there are no jobs. No jobs coming either. 99% of the people here who are poor or who are on welfare are white. All the money used to fight poverty goes to the other 1%.

All these pinheads keep voting for the NDP and the Liberals who do everything they can to prevent them from getting the jobs that are available.

If there is one bright spot in the auto workers losing their jobs right now it would be that they are finally going to see what affirmative action really means.
And they aren't going to like it. But hey, they were the ones who helped ram the legislation through.

As Jackie Thorpe pointed out in the National Post a few months back during all the OMG-we-need-massive-stimulus crap talk, there already is a massive stimulus winding its way through our economy:

"To their credit, both the Liberals and the Conservatives used [a] better fiscal footing to start cutting taxes, the Liberals with their $100-billion package of personal and corporate income taxes beginning in 2000 and the Conservatives with reductions to the GST and personal and corporate taxes that are set to total $200-billion by 2012

"Much of the new stimulus over the next few years will come from cuts to corporate income taxes, which are set to drop to 15% by 2012, the lowest in the Group of Seven. "

That's $300 Billion that's not getting a lot of talk because it's not sexy stuff like $250 mill for this group or that group.

Hey Captain Capitalism,

Have you ever actually run a Canadian Corporation or any corporation for that matter.

Economists make me laugh. GDP this and corporate tax that; theoretical discussions and Universiy courses out the wazoo.

Your topic is naive and childishly emotional. Get off your butt and do something!

"free" medicare is a hoax- or at least a misnomer.
I have been waiting for treatment for a skin ailment for 16 months- being put off from one specialist for 7 months to get in, and then two months off for "vacation" [she actually ran out of patient dollars so the gubmint cut her off until the new fiscal], to getting a treatment option but I need a pass from my OPTHAMOLGIST. No problem there- I just have to wait four more months until he gets off his "time off".

It may be Universal, and Comprehensive (except for the ever growing list of stuff that isn't covered or you co-pay), but it certainly isn't free- I'm paying with my pain and blood {literally} and my exorbitant taxes. So it is now panacea here.

Although I live in Calgary my wife cannot find a female doctor since hers left for Houston 10 years ago. She refuses to go to a male doctor, so she doesn't go and hasn't since, and thus is effectively not covered by this wonderful free medicare system. Imagine if we had American Health Care! How wonderful life would be here.

"Damn Americans… I hate those bastards. ..."

Quiz Quicky: Who said "Damn Americans… I hate those bastards. ..."?

First correct answer gets a George Bush Dolly free.

Angry, what's the purpose of your hyperlink on your screen name "Angry"?

I wanted to puke yesterday when I heard someone suggest Obama would be upset with Canada, because we are not doing our share of "stimulating" proportionately to the US and the rest of the world.

I thought I couldn’t be shocked by the stupidity that I hear, but this one takes the cake. Canada is the envy of the world, yet maroons would trade that away in a heartbeat just for the opportunity to be the next Monica.

Others have touched on it but it must emphasized that while it's cold here in the Plains states, it is REALLY cold north of the 49th. That's why most Canadians are huddled on the border looking for warmth as well as for jobs. And point taken as far as government provided health care but I just spent two days with a Canadian business associate out of Calgary. He's definitely one of my favorite business associates and probably a superior Canadian. He made it to the airport Friday confined with two far-right 'Pubs for an hour in a cab. But my point, after my annual next week, if there are significant health concerns, I will wait longer on doctor appointments then I will actual tests. They get you in and get it done. In Canada that is NOT the case. Also, they value some medical devices based on your age. So, if you're in your upper 50's, you'll have to make do with a cheaper hip replacement gizmo than someone in their 40's. Also, the roads aren't that good there, too many two-lane highways, too many cops, no sense of humor re seatbelts or speeding. It is NOT a civilized country. Oh, I should also point out that my Canadian buddy loves American beer. We had a bi-lateral business meeting in rocking chairs on a deck overlooking a marina with serial Buds in our hands for the better part of four hours. Both of us could walk a straight line subsequently. If those had been Molson's, someone would have had to call a medic.

What's all this whining about cold?

First of all, it's only cold in the winter, and secondly it's a dry cold (at least on the prairies).

maz2; Catherine Parrish former MP from somewhere in southern Ontario and still current dingbat bigot.

maz2:: Obviously belonged to the liberal party and was a minister in the Paul Martin cabinet I believe.

Obviously those crowing about how good it is for business here don't know what they are talking about. It's so good, money is leaving Canada to go elsewhere. People with money know where it is welcome.

Low corporate tax rate? they get you elsewhere. Wanna drown in red tape? Canuckistan's the place.

And while we're at it, let's discuss the extremely low personal income tax rates - not!

We are quickly overtaking the Euro-commies. A few more "green" rat holes to fill & we're there. The Ontario Premier is well on his way to sinking ON. in money losing "green."

Don't look for Nirvana here.

"First of all, it's only cold in the winter, and secondly it's a dry cold (at least on the prairies)."

That reminds me of conversations I used to have with my late uncle from Bellingham Wasington.

He would often complain/brag of the damp cold they had in Bellingham due to their proximity to the ocean.

My reply was," There is no such thing as "damp" when it is -40"

Welp, I live in the Deep Deep Deep South and 75% of our Welfare Crowd is Black, Black and Blacker. That's just how it is and has been since the 50's and 60's when the Blacks started voting Democrat.

But, I didn't come heya to moan and groan, and if Mr. Capitalism wants to move to Canada he can carry his arse, personally I am gona stay and fight for what's right. This is my Heritage down heya, fried catfish, watermelons, guns, bayous, confederate flags and a whole lot of attitude.

On the other hand now, don't think I ain't got French roots in Canada, orginally under the Louisiana Purchase Contract we owned the Delta Rivers all the way from the Gulf Coast to the Territorial Lands inside Canada, so there !

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louisiana_Purchase

That would be Carolyn Parrish but why I remember a name of a nobody is beyond me.

My sympathies to the Cap'n and all Americans.

It's taken us 40 years to emerge from our marxist a**hole PM and now America has its own version of Trudeau in the White House.

The only saving grace in the US system is that there's going to be mid-term congressional elections.

That's the time Americans saddled up with a ridiculous level of debt they had no say in creating can put a stick in the spokes of the Collective and render them ineffective.

But Cap'n. It's so goddam cold.

No, guns are more than welcome here, handguns included. Machine guns, not so much.

Nine months of winter and 3 months of bad snowmobiling.
Icefishing rocks.

Where did that report go that said :
The average US family keeps about $10,000 MORE after tax then the average Canadian family per year.

CUT SPENDING, Prime Minister Steve.

No, guns are more than welcome here, handguns included.

But don't try to bring any of those little sissy handguns, you know .25 or .32 cal.

Didn't John Candy do the American invasion movie:

"Canadian Bacon"?

Now that guy was funny. Instead of the war of 1812 we can do the war of 2012.

Canadians can play the role of imperialists!

Oh but wait, Canadians wimped out on the classic reenactment of the Plains of Abraham 1759 replay.

The separatists were getting uppity about an event 250 years ago. Is there anybody still alive from 250 years ago?

Oooh... somebody might be offended! Get over it.

Yup, those nasty Americans can come as long as they don't bring their banking practices and SEC enforcement practices. And hey, maybe they can give us some help repealing the long gun registry.

Cheers

Oh, frickin' A Gord!!! You nailed it! Getting a job in Hamilton means cutting somebody's lawn that works in Toronto.

I looked into opening a little business here, retail or coffee shop. The numbers don't look good. Major cost, RENT. Next up, regulations/taxes. By the time you get the nut cracked every month its a better investment to leave your money in GICs.

That's assuming you don't get robbed and killed, o'course. No gun behind the counter in Ontari-ari-ario-stan. And who the hell ever expected to -need- a friggin' gun behind the counter in this country? Not me, that's for sure.

This is why -illegal- businesses are the major growth industry in the lily white Hamilton area. Smoke shacks are sprouting like mushrooms along highway 6 out here in Caledoniastan. Grow ops and crack factories make huge money and there's plenty of squeebs available for labor. And they have a gun behind the counter, yep you betcha.

Unions are no doubt looking into that area for expansion opportunities.

Ratt, since I doubt you have gone all the way up from the old Miss, the grand part of Canada you claim is a little bit of the Milk River valley. This mighty river is so big that a lad who wanter to kayak to the Gulf of Mexico had to litteraly drag his boat most of the way down the Milk into Montana. Next time the Big Easy is threatened by a hurricane you can just go upstream to get away. Southern Alberta is nice that time of year and the folks are friendly too.

"Health Care" in Canada is just a make-work project for useless, unemployable, fat-assed socialist drones. It's not supposed to actually treat people...oh no! That would take money away from the bureaucracy!

Interesting article, although I have to say that raising venture capital in Canada for a high-tech start up is significantly more difficult than in the US.

I would say this is probably one of the biggest downsides to living in Canada. Canada has, unfortunately, never truly embraced high-technology as an important economic engine.

Texas, did you know there's pelicans in all the little lakes in Minnesota? They follow the river up from the Gulf every summer. I about crashed the truck the first time I saw them, fishing away happily in this little pothole of a lake outside Marshall Minnesota.

Unlike the idiot geese around here, they fly south for the winter.

Phantom and Texas C. ya'll are kiln me,,,, ;-)

But, ya can't deny TC for better or worse, we both have French Roots. I have some cousins who even live further south( I know, how can you get further south in Louisi-Yana ?), but they actually lived on the water and made their living there hunting, fishing, trapping and during the summer would pick cotton. Spent a whole summer down there when I was 10, didn't wear a pair of shoes for 3 months, and swam everyday and ate like a king.

Naw, I have the utmost respect for my Conservative Canadian Brothers and Sisters, but my arse is staying in Louisi-Yana. At least down heya I know when to get the jar of vaseline out.
,

...but it's a dry cold

phantom. you are right. having had a small business in ontario i know all about it. only big corps with lots of money and lawyers can succeed on a long term basis. rent, regs, local tax bullshit, d federal and provincial tax bullshit will kill you.

flee, flee... run away!!!

"Why is it okay for President McDreamy to make the children and grandchildren
of American taxpayers
buy houses... for people who were too stupid to realise
they should have stuck to renting in the first place?"

Wait a minute TJ - I recall a government scheme from about twenty years ago which crashed and burned when enormous amounts of money were invested into a high tech abyss. But then like a phoenix, companies like Nortel, JDS Uniphase and Research in Motion arose.

And what about the Canadarm - now the USarm, but it was ours for a little while.

A few years back a proposal was floated that would see Canada 'adopt' a lowish income island in the Caribbean. Both states would remain separate but Canadians would gain passport-free access to prime beaches and they would get spinoffs from being associated to Canada.

How about something similar for Can/US with the former adopting the latter? (Our banks are healthier...) We get unfettered access to beaches, venture capital etc and they get guaranteed access to oil, some water, snow etc.

Oh, and it would give the separatists a hissy-fit!
