Someone forgot to hit the "-" key...

...yeah saw that also on the weather channel.

Fastest Chinook i've seen!

Looks like a perfect candidate for a hockey stick graph.

I have personally seen the temp go from -15 to +8 over a 3km distance travelling at 128 kph near Crossfield (about 15 km north of Calgary). Chinooks are one very cool phenomenon. They are a very good illustration of the relative inability of man to influence the climate.

Funny how a simple error can tilt statistics. If we weren't being bombarded with doomsday predictions, this would get a chuckle from most people.

Heh. T-shirt wx in Calgary compared to Edmonchuck. But it finally quit snowing(or is that AGW rain?)-31 WC.No problem when your shovelling.

There's an excellent Cox & Forkum editorial cartoon about Global Warming at the top of the home page, under "The Last Post: 2008" at blog Celestial Junk.

Yeah, we haven't had any Chinooks recently. Maybe AlGore has been cornering the market on hot air.

Well, I've seen my fair share of chinooks in my days but the 80 degree total swing in two hours is a bit hard to believe, even for me. Note that the barometric pressure didn't change, nor did the wind direction but the % humidity is dryer than a kiln running full out. Perhaps its the annual weathermen's winter bbq.

Crap , should have got up earlier .

Seems like they do some pretty sloppy work over at Environment Canada. I was reviewing the December "daily data" for Vancouver Int'l when I noticed that they mistakenly recorded all precipitation on December 24th as rain, when it almost entirely fell as snow: http://www.climate.weatheroffice.ec.gc.ca/climateData/dailydata_e.html?timeframe=1&Prov=XX&StationID=889&Year=2008&Month=12&Day=31
I checked the hourly data for that day which confirmed that my rememberance of that day was correct with snow from 0:00 to 14:00 and only one observation of rain at 19:00: http://www.climate.weatheroffice.ec.gc.ca/climateData/hourlydata_e.html?timeframe=1&Prov=XX&StationID=889&Year=2008&Month=12&Day=24

If uncorrected this would have a huge effect on the observed December snowfall.

The trouble with this is, the entire graph adjusted itself to the false input. Note the relative humidity dropped to 3% for that hour. If this had gone unnoticed, the temps for Jan. 2009 would have been permanently recorded as higher than actual.

Top left corner reads "Imperial Units"

Imperial Units - my ask*

Queen Victoria is rolling in her grave.

Let's start a pool to see how long it takes them to correct this "little" error, for both YYZ and YYV.
Did send them a little note, commenting on the wonderfull power of the new AGW chinoooks.
Too many happy-pops last night when they where compliling the data?

Maybe at 7am they took the sensor assembly inside for some quick repairs and deicing. :P

Notice how the humidity reading correctly reflects the change in air temperature.

or maybe they let an aircraft taxi a little too close to the station. ;)

I'm going to try a SMALL error like that come income tax filing day:-)))))

I see Jack Layton made a brief stopover in Calgary this morning.

Looks like el-nino ain't happening this year ,but it'd take more than a 5 kph wind to warm it up anywhere close to that much . I remember leaving Medicine Hat one morning ,in 1980 I think, it was -32 and when I got to Brooks ,an hour west the chinook kicked in and the snow and ice had thawed and was running off the highway . It stayed warm for the rest of that winter , pretty much.

My first h/t - I'm blushing.

It must be that the minus sign was left off because the temp at Canada Olympic Park at 7 am was -9. For those who aren't familiar with Calgary, COP, on the west side of the city, will record any warm air moving in first.

About a month ago, they showed another weird heat wave but I didn't get a screen cap. Overnight, the temp supposedly went from -9 to +8 and back to -7 in 2 hours.

Post de jour.

It's Calgary's most over-used cliche' but if you don't like the weather here, wait a couple of hours. The reverse also applies.

In Calgary its not the winters that get me down, its the springs (a.k.a. the four month season of "Smarch")

...yeah Kathryn, problem is the Weather Channel had the same stats showing on their site and Lord knows how many other stations feed off this stat.

So in short, this 'error' has a domino effect but in the big picture it's a moot point.

Except for those Martian duck bills discovered in Greenland.

...3:30pm, still showing 22.

Correction, The Weather Channel still shows it as 22 with a dewpoint -24 but they are not sure what it feels like also.

Yesterday we spent a miserable day working on the exterior of house in Red Deer... -24c and a howling NW wind. We pulled the pin around 2:00pm and headed back to Calgary. Highway 2 was treacherous with blowing snow and black ice patches.

Within a 2k stretch between Airdrie and the Calgary Airport the wind shifted to the west and the highway went from ice to slush and salt/sand spray.

This time of the year in Calgary you need snow tires and a full windshield washer tank because both can come into play from one end of the city to the other.

Happy New Year! Go on the same (Enviro-Canada) website and check out the readings at points such as Eureka and Pond Inlet Stations in Nunavut! Question: Do icebergs melt at minus 40C?

I'm not an expert by any means, but that looks like it was one of the biggest temp swings in history. According to wikipedia:

"Loma, Montana boasts as having the most extreme recorded temperature change in a 24-hour period. On January 15, 1972, the temperature rose from -48 °C to 9 °C, a 57 °C change in temperature; a dramatic example of the regional Chinook wind in action."

This swing was 46°C.

Pardon my math, 45°C

I just might tune in to the propaganda tonight as my tax dollars will be at work on CBC promoting Al Gore's movie.
I guess if I'm going debate the issue with a few of his followers I should have the 'facts' on hand.
Perhaps there is an explaination for the Calgary temperature change today.

Hey -- speaking of our hard working pals at Environment Canada:

As of July 24, 2008 changes were made in how data are accessed at 25 stations.

It's Engrish Jim, but not as we know it.

Justa -

I can't see where the problem is at the link - can you be more specific?

Hope you took a screen shot,Katheryn.

Nope.As of 1721 local, they still have corrected it.

Justa:

The word data is plural, so using "were" is correct (assuming that was your point).

Clearly somebody was checking the AC at 7:00.

CERDIP & Bruce:

Whoops! My bad. Seems it's my Engrish that needs some work.

I'll stick with what I know -- once I find something, that is... ;-)

Some algorithms incorporate randomness, generally found at govt beauacratic bullshit sites.

The heat is rising in Calgary.

Four murders already today.

(and the day is not yet over)

Foobert... Nothin like getting a jump start on Edmonton.

I'll take mistakes at this point. Blizzard conditions for 25 hours now and counting. Radar looks to be at least another hour worth out there.

Last year I decided to keep track of the Weather Network's forecasts, actual temps and average temps for Moose Jaw for the year. Firstly, their forecasting for anything past 1 day is poor, and 2008 was a whopping minus 8.55 degrees below normal. So I would assume most of Sask was similar. And considering they keep telling us the north pole ice pack is melting we would have to assume this cold air is coming from the equator!!

2200hrs AND still no correction!Or are they going to wait until the end of the month and try to sneak it by,like Euarbia tried with Siberia in Oct/Nov??? Keep an eye on them folks!

You're infantile.

Guess we can't hold gubbermint officials accountable.Your mommy work for the weatherman,
assinine asshole.

This is typical government quality control. Forgot the minus sign on the temp and dropped the 8 from what should have been 83% humidity. However, I don't know where this airport is located, as in maybe a swamp. With temps at -22 C the humidity should not be as high as is being reported. Something is definitely out of kilter with their measurements or instruments.

Ah, but to a lefty rag this is the real truth on Hansen's socialist plea;

Reality Bites
Halifax news, politics and snark, by Tim Bousquet

Hansen: Dion was right
January 01, 2009 | 04:34 PM

James Hansen is the NASA scientist who first testified to the US Senate on the climatic challenges facing the globe in 1988, and continues to be one of the leading climatologists researching the issue.

Today, New Year's Day, Hansen releases a a letter to Michelle and Barack Obama:, in which he underscores the importance of taking quick action to address global warming. The letter's worth reading in its entirety, but of special interest to Canadians may be the section that deals with the need for a carbon tax. Hansen argues not just that a carbon tax is necessary, but also that a cap and trade system is not a viable alternative.

As you'll recall, Stéphane Dion campaigned on a carbon tax. Jack Layton condemned it, saying he would prefer a cap and trade system, and Stephen Harper ridiculed it as an economy killer. There were no doubt many reasons why he lost in the polls, but Canadians overwhelmingly rejected Dion and therefore the carbon tax. But here we are, three months later, and the man who arguably knows more about global warming than any other human tells us we can't avoid cataclysmic climate change without a carbon tax:

Just a couple of comments:
First off, for Stephen P: the imperial units in the top left is a link to the old system.

Also, for Terrapod: I am more suprised at the 52% to 48% numbers rather than the 80% and up later in the day.
We have been running in the 80s and 90s most days.
OTOH, I am across the valley from Canada Olympic Park, so we are usualy warmer and dryer than the Airport.
Cheers

aa: "You're infantile."

I'll take this one since I was the one who noticed the error and passed it on to Kate.

Yes, it's an error; the correct reading should be -22. However, it's not the first time I've seen them make an error with those pesky + and - signs. Can you, aa, say with any certainty that Environment Canada noticed either of those 2 errors and changed them or will the incorrect numbers stand as the "official" numbers? How many other errors exist in the "official" records?

If they do stand as the "official" numbers, who is going to use them as more proof positive that global warming is man-made? What idiotic policies are going to be based on those "official" numbers? How much are you willing to fork out for supposed solutions to problems that never existed in the first place? Most importantly, are you willing to cover my share of these solutions to non-problems?

There is nothing infantile about expecting the official numbers to be correct.
