Barack Obama has only four years to save the world.
That is the stark assessment of Nasa scientist and leading climate expert Jim Hansen who last week warned only urgent action by the new president could halt the devastating climate change that now threatens Earth. Crucially, that action will have to be taken within Obama's first administration, he added.
And he'll get on that first thing Wednesday morning...
Using data from the EPA, environmentalist organizations, and various news accounts, the [Institute for Liberty] estimates more than 500 million pounds of CO2 will be released during the four-day inaugural festivities. Among the offenders:
- The 600 private jets expected to fly visitors to and from the event will produce 25,320,000 pounds of CO2.
- Personal vehicles could account for 262,483,200 pounds of CO2.
- The horses in the parade will produce more than 400 pounds of CO2.And if you don't have an idea what a pound of CO2 really means, consider this: The average household would take 57,598 years to produce as much CO2 as Obama's inauguration
Carbon Bigfoot (PDF)
Heh - "He created it in six days, so this shouldn't be any problem...
Update - and just in the nicker of time!

That's Maine, folks.

Jim Hansen; isn't he the same guy who ran the Muppet show. It ain't easy being green.
And the horses in the parade will produce more than 400 pounds of something but it won't be co2
Cripes. Hasn't anybody taken this Hansen fruitcake out back of the woodshed and beat some sense into him yet? His article is just a reprint of what he's been spewing for the last 6 years!! Nothing new here, except the Messiah's personal output of shite and CO2 probably aren't factored into the figures.Would probably double them.
Hansen is a muppet, but not one that was funny or appealing to children.
He operates as the most visible Public Sector Scientist, and as such, makes hyperbolic claims to increase his funding.
4 years? Well, that's more than the 2 years Province columnist and sometime Bill Good Show stand-in Michael Smyth says we have left (via the Goreacle)!
Doesn't matter anyway. Nothing is impossible for the Obamessiah!
No problem. I'm sure they have a deal with 'Big Al' to purchase carbon credits to offset these emissions. The US taxpayer will be happy to pay, as it is the only way to 'save the planet'.
A mere four years to completely reverse the "devastating" effects of CO2 we, apparently, created in the past 120 years? Four years?
What, are we not only completely eliminate all CO2 output, we are also going to somehow suck all the CO2 out of the air we put in over the past 120 years.
In four years?
There used to be a time these kinds of nutcases were simply put in the back of a white van and never heard of again.
I long for those days.
"...a claim backed last week by a group of British, Danish and Finnish scientists who said studies of past variations in climate indicate that a far more likely figure for sea-level rise will be about 1.4 metres..."
Uhhh, maybe I'm missing something, but I thought Hansen's whole point was that we were causing an unnatural warming because of our evil carbon emissions and such. What "past variations in climate" are they studying, and what do they think was the cause of them? Could this be a natural climate cycle after all?
By the way, last I checked there has been no net change in the volume of polar ice over the past ten years, and the antarctic ice field is the largest it has ever been.
Obviously, Hansen needs more government funding to continue "studying" this stuff.
Of course Obama can fix the earth. He's the Chosen One! He even knew who the fifth Cylon was. We're just mere mortals who can't understand his obvious greatness.
Does anyone want to buy his nail clippings? Anyone?
Oh, and as to the "Obama has only four years to save the world" comment:
He created it in six days, so this shouldn't be any problem for Him.
Earth on edge of Ice Age, that edge being ten or twelve thousand years from now, just a blink of the eye in geological terms;
http://english.pravda.ru/science/earth/11-01-2009/106922-earth_ice_age-0
Why did the Vikings call it Greenland?
I also wonder what the "Omassiah" will do to or with all the CO2 from carbonated drinks and wine.Maybe he is expected to do the enevitable miracle and change wine to water, oh joy.
anyone who believes the politicians of the world (even the Obamessiah) can influence the planet's climate obviously haven't followed politics very closely.
Naaaa, half a billion pounds can't be right. Did anyone factor in all the oxygen breathing/CO2 expelling politicians, wannabees, hacks and Hollywood types that will be there?
.
Insanity rules now.
.
He'll get at it first thing Wed morn? I thought Wed was 'get every black dude a job' day.
Also, this study admits that it didn't take into account all the CO2 and methane from the crowds. I guess that explains the lack of beer and chili dogs available on the mall.
Jim Hansen fudges his statistics. For sanity's sake share this link with everyone you know:

This Hansen guy mentions 8 years of inaction by the US government, implying that only the Bush administration was opposed to Kyoto. On Jul 1997, the US Senate passed the Byrd-Hagel resolution which was a preemptive strike againt Kyoto, by the comfortable margin of 95-0. Since this was prior to 2000, the administration must have been that of Bill Clinton, with the VP, one Al Gore.
One of the VP duties is to preside over the Senate. Since he was a former Senator, how is it that Gore had absolutely no influence on this resolution? Could it be that no administration of any sripe would agree to a treaty that bound America's economic activity but not developing nations, read China. This information is easily avaiable at Google, but I seldom see it mentioned in the MSM.
Jim Henson, Muppet creator, has been dead for almost a decade (or perhaps more ... I lose count the older I get).
You got this Nasa guy mixed up with Henson, who at least demonstrated that he had talent.
Hey, great, the environment vs the economy - SUCH DIFFICULT CHOICES - this will perhaps be more entertaining than an episode of "24".
Ok, my last chemistry class was in 1984, so I may be missing something.
BUT, how exactly does around 10 pounds of a complex hydrocarbon (one gallon of gasoline) produce almost 20 pounds of CO2? To say nothing of all the other compounds found in automobile exhaust.
Is there something in the bonding of the carbon to oxygen atoms that creates this increase?
"PIGS IN SPAAAAAAAAAAAACE".....
surely everyone remembers Henson's cautionary tale about a world made uninhabitable by global warming.....and how a group of intrepid pigs (Link Hogthrob, Miss Piggy and Dr. Julius Strangepork) voyaged forth in the 'Swinetrek 'to find a new planet free of SUVs and meat eaters.
it was the first prescient warning of the planet earth's looming catastrophe....it was waaay back when we were still battling GLOBAL COOLING...which we conquered almost overnight by the way once we set our minds to it....
"Set our minds to it" is hitting the nail right on the head, john begley, since all these phenomena exist mostly in our imaginations. We DECIDED it wasn't cooling and lo and behold - no cooling!
It'll be just the same with warming, but not to worry: the green fear profiteers already have the Water Crisis and Soil Crisis rolled out with their hands out for donations. What they won't tell you is that these crises have existed forever in the developing world; after all, you might get the idea you should send any charity money you have to organizations that actually DO something about it instead of to them.
BTW this course of action by the greenies was predicted ages ago by skeptical observers of the scene.
Well the only thing I hope is that Pigs in Space is not prescient for the big Owe when Miss Piggy frumps at Link Hogthob after blowing a course correction, "You pushed the wrong button, Bacon Brain!"
Nuts and misfits used to be rounded up and sterilized,...I think it is time to return to the tried and true ways of dealing with Hansen, Suzuki and Algore types before everyone is this stupid, for the sake of the planet! Think of the children,.. no I can't, white vans please.
Atlantic Jim,
Gasoline is a hydrocarbon, ergo, hydrogen and carbon. The hydrogen weighs very little (1) so the carbon is most of the weight (15 I believe; google 'periodic table')
When it is oxidized, each Carbon atom (15) joins with two Oxygen atoms (16). Therefore, the amount of C02 produced in total oxidation will be more than triple the weight of the the Carbon. However, you do have incomplete combustion, the production of Carbon Monoxide (CO), etc. so that must be how they came up with 20 lbs.
As it is only about 4/100 of 1% of the atmosphere in any case, it is still all crap.
I'm speechless at this astonishing display of pure, unadulterated lunacy.
It just keeps on getting more and more... loony.
Save the world in four years? One man named "Obama"? What is he, some kind of powerful, magic-working messenger of some kind of deity?
Sure. And I can get a date with any woman in the world I want, any woman, no problem. Sure. Never worry about where, when, and with whom my next great night's gonna happen, 'cause all I have to do is snap my fingers and, presto, there, instantly, she is, ready, willing... Sure! Ah, I hope Ann Coulter is sitting down, 'cause she's gonna materialize on my couch in 3...2...1...*snaps fingers*!
There's going to be horses? How redundant... with all the foul, hot air already bloviating from arseholes and all that horse shee-it already being produced... as if they needed even more!
Check out Nat. Newswatch if you think the love affair and slobbering over Obama is bad, the doofusses over at the Star are really getting "Jiggy with Iggy " as I told my wife. It is Iggy this and Iggy that, he can do no wrong and he has done diddly.
Wonder how much Co2 it will take to produce the electricity to run the printing presses BO will need to fund all his spending?
Or maybe he'll just use the Zimbabwe example and print billion and trillion dollar notes.
Scathing article for Obama's new climate guy . . . the honeymoon was supposed to last until after Tuesday.
http://tinyurl.com/8vxd7d
A top ten list that Letterman would never dare put on air.
Hansen is doing this as he has realized that this is now or never for the CO2 regulation project.
Given the current economic conditions, there may be little appetite to impose large economic costs and job losses on America for no significant impact to climate. The Europeans has been unsuccessful in hitting their own emissions reduction targets. Swapping out coal for natural gas has V Putin holding Europe's leash. China and India have no interest in signing on to anything that impacts their growth.
Even with all the pro greenhouse regulation people in the administration, this still has to either go through Congress (and as Martin has reminded us this could work out to be a Byrd - Hagel repeat), or get directed through the EPA.
If Obama pushes this too hard and it turns out to be a major public negative, he risks the second term. Bill Clinton and Al Gore wouldn't put any political capital into making this happen, why would Obama. He doesn't get to vote "present" on this.
To disgusting to even comment on.
At one time the phrase "Its a Mad Mad world" was just a comedy Movie. Its now the entire leadership of the Planet.
I think we're reaching the limit of climate catastrophe time spans. Any apocalyptic crackpot knows you can't time the Apocalypse to happen too far off or people won't get excited. You can't have it too soon or the con will be exposed before you've had a chance to cash all the checks. Four years has to be pretty close to the limit, so from now on the day of The End will have to start moving along with us in time. Don't expect the Last Days to get much closer than they are now.
BTW, that's Maine AND New Hampshire on that map.
It's worse than the Oscar awards.
Hollywood, D.C.
Hansen is a bigger shyster than Bernard Madoff.
"Its now the entire leadership of the Planet.

Not so. Look to Vaclav Havel.
Vaclav Havel is following in the footsteps of John Huss*, labelled heretic for his opposition to the selling of indulgences by the RC Church.
Huss was burned alive at the stake.
Indulgences today = carbon offsets, sold by the Gaia Church of Mao Stlong, Goreacle, Hansen, Suzuki, Dionky, et al.

not so!!!
and on the SEVENTH day, HE sat in revrend wright's church and created the collection plate
There's going to be horses?
No , there will not . Unicorns , yes , horses , no .
With record low temperatures pretty much all over the globe, grant-sucking, science-ignoring useful idiots like Hansen are becoming very, very worried.
Expect more dire predictions...it is their only defence against truth & reality. And, of course, the MSM will dutifully report same without any fact-checking whatever.
Apparently, now, global warming causes global cooling. And IT IS ALL OUR FAULT!!!
Up is down...left is right...right is wrong...black is white...
Gawd...how stupid can we get....
Are there any other CKNW listeners out there? This afternoon Sean Leslie interviewed a female Canadian reporter who is down in DC for the inauguration. To say that she has a crush on The One is the understatement of the year. It was BEYOND pathetic! She then began referring to him as "Barack", as if she were his mistress. Could you ever see a reporter referring to Bush as "George went here and then met with so & so".
Please!!!!
The worst part of all of this is that Obama's term has somehow convinced the MSM that they were correct with their HIGHLY BIASED reporting. Perhaps the smarter ones KNOW how corrupt they all are but thinks that the ends justify the means.
I'm so scared - I'm shaking in my Sorels!
Muppets - isn't that the home of Gonzo, as in Gonzo Journalism?
As regards the Ignatieff swoon, some at the National Post seem to be exhibiting symptoms of this affliction. Jonathan Kay this past week says "Ignatieff is signalling that a well-informed adult is now firmly in command" of the Liberal party (i.e. we can once again face ourselves in the mirror the next morning when we support the Liberals), and Ivison, while at least pointing out that Ignatieff has said one thing one day and the absolute opposite a short time later, can say only that "This (Harper's) position (needing tax cuts for the middle class) appears in contrast with that of Mr. Ignatieff, who told a Frenchlanguage newspaper that he would reject a budget that contained tax cuts for the middle class. The emphasis should be on helping vulnerable Canadians and on job creation, he said. However, the Liberal leader's view on the issue is not entirely clear since last week he told an audience in Halifax that if he were prime minister he would introduce tax cuts aimed at low-income and middle-income Canadians."
So saying the exact opposite thing a short time later only means his "view on the issue is not entirely clear"?
One doesn't have to use much of one's imagination to come up with the front page headlines the papers would have been screaming had such conflicting statements been uttered forth from the mouth of Mr. Harper or any of the Conservatives.
http://www.nationalpost.com/news/story.html?id=1182400 and http://www.nationalpost.com/story.html?id=1170077&p=2
Interestingly, in the second link Kay reveals that "According to senior Liberals I've spoken with, Ignatieff and his people have gotten the word out that he alone will be pronouncing on this [Israel/Gaza Operation Cast Lead] issue. Do you think we might see the MSM raising concerns over Ignatieff's 'legendary control tendencies' or "his image as an autocratic leader who exerts iron-fisted control over his caucus"? Or will they remain reported only when they pertain (as they do in these quotes) to Mr. Harper?
They Shoot Horses Don't They?
Better to save the planet, and feed a few Europeans, or cats/dogs.
Overcoming this "Climate Change" scam has been and will continue to be a long hard fight. When you post an item like this one, Kate, you give those of us who understand that AGW is a scam, a place to carry the fight to the scammers. Thank you.
It quite encouraging to see that most of those commenting to the Guardian article quoting Hansen are highly critical of him and of AGW.
AtlanticJim,
The CO2 / Gasoline ratio is well explained here:
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/Feg/co2.shtml
another day the same comment. carbon based organisms trying to eliminate carbon. jeeeeez, what morons.
"carbon based organisms trying to eliminate carbon."
Yeah, no wonder the Vulcans and other aliens don't drop in and say hello. They're probably telling stupid earthling jokes right now.

Bruce; Sorry I had to correct that last line for you.
"Barack Obama has only four years to save the world."
That is probably a true statement. After he lets down everyone who voted for him and tosses everyone who helped him win the office of POTUS under the bus. I don't think he will win another term.
