Chris, who sent along this photo of Saskatoon's QE power plant on a -40 day writes;
I guess we're terrible people for not harnessing the power of a 7km/h wind and 8 hours of sun....
Related - Saskatchewan residents resort to burning solar panels to keep warm...

Did Al Gore just make a quick trip across the prairies and Atlantic Canada without filing a flight plan?
If that sonofabitch even hints at crossing our airspace, we'll take him out...
Nice photo, is that a coal-fired plant? How come Regina doesn’t have one?
-40? Did you know that -40 is the same in F or C, so you can write it -40 FC, stands for F* Cold!
Is that snow falling from those clouds, I mean exhaust columns? Who would have thought so much water vapour is released when generating power thermally?
those magnificent greenhouse gases fall to earth in the form of snow in about a mile in this temperature.
why doesnt Regina have a coal plant, no coal and mostly no water for cooling or running those coal fired boilers for making steam. Estevan has coal and water and supplies most of the south side of the Sask. grid.
Alberta has its big plants away from the cities as well except for the little one in Redmonton.
Toronto according to CBCpravda has a steam plant that although shut down years ago continues to steam off sepia coloured smoke in support of their article supporting the lessening of green house gasses. sure the photo was old and doctored but why apologize for making folks think Toronto looks like the Soviet Union or China.
Big Al should be put on trial for fraud and crimes against humanity.
What a relief this must be for the Arabs. Now we won't need to eat their camels.

Ah Kate! I love it when you talk dir - NO! I mean Tough!!
But c2, Edmonton has lots of smaller stuff on Refinery Row and Ft Sask has Chemical Row which puts out a pretty impressive sight on cold days like today.
Does one have to plug in a hybrid on a cold night like this?
Will somebody work out the mileage of a hybrid or electric car when the temperature reaches -40. Distance travelled will be somewhere inversely proportional to the internal/external temperature differential. You might be able to travell 350 clics in California in the summertime but lets see the numbers when its -40, I'd guess you might make it to the corner store providing you don't have to stop for a red light.
I've often wondered about the heat in an electric car when it's so blasted cold. Nothing kills batteries like a fan and electric heating elements. Whenever I raised the issue I never got an answer.
Well, technically we're up to 9:16 of daylight today.
That -46 windchill from an eight click wind is a be-aytch, though.
Dear Al Gore & David Suzuki,
You are both complete idiots!
Goodbye,
Joe Common Sense
I've often wondered about the heat in an electric car when it's so blasted cold.~ Ghost of Ed
Easy fix Ed(the ghost), use a gasoline-fired heater, dummy.
Aach!
CBC Newsworld is currently showing "An Inconvenient Truth".
Why are they showing fictional movies on a news channel? Doesn't that violate their broadcast license? I also didn't see the warning that the material may be offensive to some viewers.
I'm disgusted that I am paying for this.
I'll bet we don't get a chance to see an opposing viewpoint on that station.
I'd file a complaint...but I don't know with whom to file it.
I'm totally perpelxed.
Where is all this cold air coming from?
Can't be from the Arctic, where BBC News is repeatedly running a commercial showing shrinking ice in the Arctic Ocean.
Not to mention polar bears drowning because there's not enough ice for them.
It must be coming from .... I give up.
Think now, how much colder it would be if there was not that damn GW.
In another news:
There is somewhat shocking article at ‘huffingtonpost.com’(Via Instapundit), shocking, because it is on that post, favored place of Gore and company.
In the second paragraph of an article written by Harold Ambler it says:
Mr. Gore has stated, regarding climate change that "the science is in." Well, he is absolutely right about that, except for one tiny thing. It is the biggest whopper ever sold to the public in the history of humankind.
Then Ambler goes on and points out Gore’s deceiving use of language:
1. First, the expression "climate change" itself is a redundancy, and contains a lie. Climate has always changed, and always will.
Ambler finishes Gore off with a well written finesse:
By the way, your contention that the Arctic basin will be "ice free" in summer within five years (which you said last month in Germany), is one of the most demonstrably false comments you have dared to make. Thank you for that!
Anyway if anyone is interested, go and have a read, it’s about 7 pages long:
www.huffingtonpost.com/harold-ambler/mr-gore-apology-accepted_b_154982.html
Looks like Gore does not really mean what he speaks about.
"We require a central organizing principle - one agreed to voluntarily.
Minor shifts in policy, moderate improvement in laws and regulations,
rhetoric offered in lieu of genuine change - these are all forms of
appeasement, designed to satisfy the public’s desire to believe that
sacrifice, struggle and a wrenching transformation
of society will not be necessary."

meanwhile, Montana's Glacier National Park will be re-named by "The One", as the glaciers have receded.
Looking out my window this morning at the neighborr's house I noticed the smoke from the chimeny was going down not up. It is damn cold.
Windmills and solar panels @ 7km/hr and 8hrs of hazy, weak sunlight trying to contend with record Sask Hydro draw.
Good thing Premier Calvert was ousted before he drank all the Fat Albert Kool-Aide.
-40 C and windchill to -50 C overnight yesterday.
Yep, that's my kind of Anthropogenic Global Warming; mostly around the fireplace to avoid hypothermia and frostbite.
Hey, a good excuse for a cuddle with a loved one, or hoisting a rum and eggnog. Ah the 3 Wise Men arrived today, bearing gifts of anti-Global Warming.
I wonder how those climatological models are working now?
Like I said Kate, when it hits -60 C windchill its best to stay inside. Flesh get flash frozen in 10 minutes at -50 C.

This ought to cure the pine beetle nuisance, good for the forestry sector! Another couple of weeks of balmy -27 C should do the trick.

That's steam!! Oh thank heavens I thought someone had nuked S'toon trying to take out SDA.
Joe.No.That's not steam. That's eeeeevil CO2 that becomes visible at....oh wait.
And CBC laughs in our frozen faces while rebroadcasting "An Inconvenient Truth" tonite. The nerve. They really are laughing at us. The worst winter many of us can remember for many years.
Defund. Them. Now.
Huddled up against the Mexican border for warmth I am already dreading next Christmas' trip back to Saskatchewan that my wife promised the kids.
Someone one Kate's prediction post predicted that the ipcc would reverse its position on AGW by year's end. I think that that person may be proven at least partially correct - that the ipcc will begin saying that there needs to be an adjustment in the modelling -that the timeline to armageddon will be lengthened - but they will hold to the assertion (blind faith) that CO2 is a significant source of ghgs that need to be regulated and reduced.
That mealy-mouthed type of change will be enough for governments to back away from or delay ghg reduction targets and the long retreat into obscurity by the agw lobby will have begun.
It will be a massive defeat for the left as they will left with no alternate excuse for massive government involvement in the affairs of business and individuals alike.
Mmm, -40s here in northeastern BC most of last week. Enjoy!
I propose the Nobel committee take back Big Al's prize, and give it to whoever invented block heaters and remote starters. He can keep the Oscar.
The -50C windchill was CTV's lead story tonight and their last one was disappearing glaciers in Montana! Just how are glaciers melting away at -39C (inanimate objects don't worry about the windchill). I just wish they would stop with the rubbish about global warming/climate change/climate chaos or whatever the panic term of the day is...
I just knew we got out in time. My husband and I left Saskatoon on Dec. 27th and drove 5 days to Florida. We arrived at 4 p.m. on New Years Eve. Temp. was in the high 70's F...high 20's C...And today will be in the 80's F... 25 C...I have to tell you even if the temp. was 10C here ...we would STILL go out and walk under the palm trees. We WILL miss our family in Saskatoon however...the siren call of staying here in Florida for the next three months is stronger. Our 60 year old bones can't take the cold anymore. If we had the money we would move the whole province of Saskatchewan here.
I thought our -35 was bad. Once again, Saskatchewan wins. (Just in the wrong category)
I'm beginning to think my investment in Chinese Carbon Credits was a bad idea.
Fat Al will never be tried for spreading lies and striking fear in the minds of school children. It's not about IF he's proven to have spread false info but WHEN. He'll just say he was given wrong information. He'll also be keeping the big bucks he was paid to spread it around and his Nobel prize as well. Something very wrong when he refuses to debate dissenting voices, we know he knows little of what he speaks.
There's also something wrong when our schools will not show the other side of the debate.
Did anyone happen to note OUR CBC ran the Inconvenient Truth again in prime time?
"Sonofabitch" gets the award for the biggest fraud of the decade, probably unbeatable for many more decades.
I spent a month of -40 up in Yellowknife one season. After a while there was so much ice fog you couldn't see the 4-5 hours of twilight that passes for sunshine at that time of year. Of course us evil polluters had an extra set of car keys so we could leave the things running while we went shopping for ice cream. Beer strapped to the back of the skidoo tended to freeze before you got it home.
I believe it was also the year that the ballet theater burned down because someone tried to thaw the propane lines with a torch. (not what you think: the siding actually caught fire and spread inside a false roof).
remember the "Hues of the News" CBCpravda at its best.
http://www.smalldeadanimals.com/archives/006020.html
I was ironic on CBC, after reporting on Saskatchewan and Manitoba's cold spill the program announcer spoke of Global warming as the great and deadly thread mankind will face in the near future.
I was awe struck by the blatant disinformation of the public.
Two days before I informed CBC on there Feedback link in the kindest way that Al's movie is political rather than scientific and a British court found 9 errors.
Apparently CBC doesn't care what they broadcast even when informed otherwise.
I read where people in Saskatchewan are burning their solar panels, in an attempt to stay warm, because temperatures are at 49 below zero.
Will Al Gore and Stephane Dion pardon these people, during this emergency, from the carbon tax?
How awful! All those power plants spewing tons of deadly dihydrogen monoxide, the major contributor to GHG emissions, into the atmosphere. When will it end?
