I think that at one time, way, way, back in their history, before unions existed, the NDP had something to offer the "working stiff". (Although I've never believed that socialism is the answer). Now they've morphed into the party of fringe causes - the more fringe and way out there the better. With the rise of our welfare state over the past 40 years they are more for the "non-working stiff". All these modes of behaviour are individual and can still be found.

The difference in culture is population size and economic mode, which are directly related to each other. The difference is also due to our accumulation of knowledge. Our species doesn't operate by genetic but by socially developed, learned and stored knowledge. So, we 'know' more about the world and how to interact with it than did our ancestors. We know that germs, not 'evil spirits' cause disease..and so on.

Nazism and Islamic fascism aren't polar opposities; they are both fascist. And that means that both are collectivist and utopian ideologies.

A major difference between now and the 1930s, in my view, is that the people, the everyday individual, have more power. I put this power down to the internet and blogs. We can find out information, we can share it, we can reject inaccurate data and we can express it. All of this was impossible back then. I think we shouldn't underestimate the power of this force to enact change and 'repel the barbarians'.

Ezra Levant has some suggestions about what to do about these rallies. Rallies obviously can't be stopped; nor can we 'vett' the rallies to ensure that they say only what the government wants (as is done in Arab etc states).

But with regard to the expression of 'mass hatred' (where ALL members of a defined group are defined as evil), something can be done about that if these are public statements. I refer to any 'mass hatred' type of rally, not just the anti-Israeli/Jewish rallies.

He says that all that will happen is that the rally organizers might be charged under section 318-9 of the criminal code, ie, for promoting hatred and genoicde. That's all that we can do in the criminal area.

But, politicians have to denounce, not all rallies, but these types of rallies (where ALL members of a group are defined as identically evil).

And above all, the Union participation in these rallies ought to be stopped, fined by the government. There has to be a Supreme Court Case about the political activism of unions. ET, I altogether concur re the unions' political activities—all left, all the time and often counter productive to the needs of their members. My union actually tried to pass a pro-abortion motion a number of years ago: the Chairwoman, a hired lawyer, who happened to be—whoops!—both Christian and conservative, disallowed the motion, saying that the union had no jurisdiction to pass judgement on such an issue on behalf of its members. (This woman, of course, was never invited back!) What idiots! There is a connection between the area of Iran to India and the Nazis.

These include Sid Ryan's statements about essentially outlawing Israeli professors in Canada; it includes these anti-Israel marches, it includes donations to political campaigns (eg, Miller in Toronto is heavily indebted to unions for their money AND their 'in-kind' work on his and his councillors' campaigns). I'm quite sure that none of these actions was approved by the Union workers.

What Dr. Sentamu doesn't point out, however, is the fact that multiculuralism has been able to take a stranglehold of Europe, Britain, and North America because a critical mass of those of Judeo-Christian heritage don't have the courage of their convictions, they lack "backbone," as lookout has pointed out.
