Physicists do not deny the existence of zero-point energy. From a thermodynamic point fo view, however, it does not seem possible to exploit it. People who claim it is possible are on the fringes of science, and many consider them crackpots.

The proof is in the pudding, of course. If these zero-point energy supporters can produce a device that taps zero-point energy then they win the argument. Until then, my money is on the physicists.

Teach: I suppose the particles that were predicted theoretically before they were discovered don't count in your calculus of what is a 'worthwhile' theoretical entity. Same goes for just about every physical law that was discovered theoretically before it was confirmed; e.g., SR and GR, to name two.

Fanny and Freddy applied the energy in a vacuum theory to the financial world and pretty much ended it. New working theory: Money vacuums can't pay loans.

Gore Co. is applying a similar theory to global temperature to save the planet: living humans warm the planet. However, after over ten years of off-trend cooling, stressed economies, explosive growth of nanny state authority and heaps of failed predictions a new working theory is emerging: The sun heats the earth and nothing else in by either nature or man comes within an order of magnitude to matching the effect of changes with the sun output on our climate change. All of man's efforts to affect climate change are futile and worse than useless.

The continuing fraud from so-called "experts" telling us we can get something from nothing has been sold to us over and over. I may be skeptical but the only perpetual motion machines I've seen are the people that sell this snake oil. They're like black holes, sucking up time, space, energy and the big one...money.

Look I can imagine the possibilities just as well as the next guy, but where theoretical physics is concerned, let's be realistic here. The reality is if you tinker with the math long enough you can make anything appear plausible. That's pretty much what they've done with string theory...they're up to what, 12 or 14 theoretical dimensions needing to exist in order for the thing to work? Ummm...Ok...

M-theory identifies 11 dimensions. There really is nothing strange about dimensions beyond what we perceive. I'm sure everyone laughed at atomic theorists, too. String theories only seem to be outside of our experimental grasp. I'm pretty certain that we'll find a way to either confirm or discount them, maybe in my lifetime. I suspect it will more likely involve astronomers and space telescopes, rather than particle physicists and massive, expensive colliders.

Although I still hold out hope that the LHC will find Higgs.

The first word that comes to mind is 'snopes'

There was a SciFi story by James Blish that took the idea of using 'fringe' avenues of research and giving them top rank priority for funding. The idea being that the established lines of research were consuming ever increasing resources with ever diminishing results.

So a few hairball research projects that were being run by otherwise credible people were prioritized by the desired results that were expected of them

Makes for good SF but you'd be hard pressed to get that by the establishment.

Back in school I once got sidetracked and took a misstep while showing a proof on a calculus exam.

I applied all correct rules to arrive at completely different result than the one desired.

However the unintentional sidestep was not an incorrect use of the calculus, it was just not THE correct and proven formula.

It was of no use other than a topic of interest.

I think my math prof got a kick out of it.

Many theories of physics are like that.

Years ago while doing some Top Secret work I was mistakenly allowed to watch a few minutes of a timeport halograph in which Columbus presented a similar space vacuum pipe design to power his sea voyage to and from the Indies. Both the pipe and a proposed auxiliary fusion reactor were rejected by Ferdinand and Isabella. It turned out they were deeply indebted to the Sailmakers Guild for war financing. They didn't know or care if Columbus could ever find his way back or not with sails only. I lost a lot of respect for them over that.

Two possibilities:

1) Your reasoning was faulty
2) You used the correct mathematical reasoning, but did not write out a formula correctly

Which one was it? I only ask since you sound like you're trying to say that many physics theories are just mathematical odd cases. If so, that's wrong. It's not a physics theory if it doesn't represent the physical world in some way. In fact, it's usually nitpicking mathematicians that find odd cases (say, strange solutions) of physical theories that have no physical correspondence or that are not physically realisable, but that nonetheless exist.

Ural; Thanks for the comment. Just thinking we are surely only at the first stages of understanding the potential of vacuum in space. If you are familiar with the Dune series, both of my sons one now an engineer the other a lawyer, convinced me to enjoy and stretch my imagination. The discussions about the untapped potential of the space vacuum makes wonder (imagine?)about the prescience of Captain Nemo and the Nautilius. Maybe the wormholes used by the Enterprise were the result of harnessing space vacuum. ;) Cheers.

Violations of conservation of energy will not be tolerated.
As to M-theory, millions of dollars in research grants and hundreds of careers were wasted for the last ~40 years in theoretical physics because of String Theory and its descendents.
Anyone trying to research outside string theory or Super string theory or M theory faced resistance from within the community and likely would not receive research grants.
M-theory is a theory that was developed purely from mathematics and not from observations of reality.
No experimental evidence suggests that this theory is valid and no proposed experiments can be done with any current or even imagined technology.
In short, nearly 40 years of theorizing (Which led to the speculation of zero point energy and this entry) and no results always led by the stringy theorists mantra that in the future experiments will be available to prove this bloated intellectual masturbatory claptrap. /rant off

Well anon with respect to my reasoning and my formula ... that's a fair assessment. Even though a proof is not necessarily arrived at by only one path and that any number of paths may produce a "formula" that gives the desired result.

Like I said I got sidetracked.

I still say that it happens a lot that theories evolve from mistakes. More often than some theorists would care to admit.
