Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your delectation and pursuant to our Thursday night wild-card show, here is astronaut Michael Fincke presenting his International Space Station Tour, II, III, IV (2009, ½ hour).

On another topic, those of you in the process engineering field will undoubtedly be familiar with the broad range of block valves that are commonly available for use in our projects. Nevertheless, a colleague today sent me this image of a rather unusual block valve, which I thought you might find interesting.

Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

Well, I will admit, Exetaz, that I have recently been

Just for s#%s and giggles, how long does it take a MAJOR soft drink producer to pick up their canisters of co2 and syrup when a customer cancels, for poor service?.

Looks like things DON'T go better with...

I've just emailed the US site, and will keep you posted; cross your fingers.

We'll have to wait and see how this turns out...eventually.

Social services remove young children from grandparents and arrange adoption by gay couple

The five-year-old boy and his four-year-old sister were being looked after by their grandparents because their mother, a recovering drug addict, was not considered capable.

But social workers stepped in after allegedly deciding that the couple, who are aged 59 and 46, were "too old" to look after the children.

When he protested to social workers, the grandfather alleges he was told: "You can either accept it and there's a chance you'll see the children twice a year, or you can take that stance and never see them again."

On another occasion he was allegedly told: "If you couldn't support the children [back the gay adoption], if you were having contact and couldn't support the children, and showing negative feelings, it wouldn't be in their best interests for contact to take place."

In this latest Equalization tirade, the whole thing is merely cover for the real story:

this place is facing deficits that will run, according to the first townie first minister in this place since the Great Depression,
somewhere between $500 million and $1.2 billion in just a single year. No forecast for what may come after that.

A year after finishing a string of record surpluses, Danny Williams’ Provincial Conservatives are set to record deficits the likes of which have not been seen in Newfoundland and Labrador since before 1934.

I like that block valve, Vit, got any more photos of that nature? I'm always on the lookout for that sort of chuckle-inducing material.

People seeing this in my office often ask me about it:

Vit;

Heh.

All innovation comes from a lazy person.

That cindercrete block is perfect to hold the flange bolts in place while you get the nuts started, since you're doing it by yourself while your winger is driving the old (gate) valve back to the parts crib to exchange it for a new one.

In the meantime, while the bypass gate valve is gone, the stuff still has to be handled...

Being a simple sort, the first thing I see is a picture of innovation...
Thanks for the intuitive labeling!

hey eastern I'll take those co2 off your hands, have some homebrew to keg here :D

...but now after 3 years isn't the syrup a little past it's prime & those co2 canister's certification expired? :O

I don't know what everyone is laughing about? This is simply a photo of a manually actuated Fisher 'H' body valve. Although it has poor turndown characteristics, it does boast 100% shut-off. It is a variation on the butterfly type valve. As you can see in the photo, it is shown in the closed position. It is very widely used in Albania, in their industrial yogurt gasification facilities.

On the other hand, perhaps it's just an improperly installed gasket...;)

Harper in the House of Commons yesterday: “Mr. Speaker, I will tell the House what the only sad contrast is around here these days. It is the leader of the NDP, who a month ago was prepared to support the mission in Afghanistan, prepared to support corporate tax cuts, prepared to support development of the oil sands, and now wants to go back and try to pretend he is a left wing ideologue all over again. It is his problem. He made his bed. He can sleep in it.”

Yeah. So there, Jack. You and everyone else are just pretending. Don't you know that Harper is the only true socialist ideologue in Parliament. And he has three years of spending and budget history to prove it.

"Foote First Liberal to Say No
January 30, 2009

Random Burin St. George's MP Judy Foote has confirmed that if the equalization changes remain, she'll be voting no to the federal budget. Foote says a solution needs to be found to resolve this province's financial losses.

Liberal MP's from this province admit they have been hearing from constituents in the wake of the province's outcry over the damage caused by changes to the equalization formula. There have been talks with the federal Liberals to seek an amendment, and even to have the fiscal measure that impacts this province delayed for a year. Still, if nothing changes, Foote is prepared to cast her vote for Newfoundland and Labrador.

St. John's South Mount Pearl MP Siobhan Coady isn't as direct, but told VOCM Niteline with Ryan Cleary, she and her colleagues are working with Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff to ensure that Newfoundland and Labrador is treated fairly. "

CBC host 'infuriated' with Oshawa arena for firing Billy Steele, 17; volunteer's father files human rights claim

Don Cherry loves it when kids talk to him. But an Oshawa teen has been banned from his job as a volunteer cameraman at the General Motors Centre for doing just that.

Billy Steele, 17, was told approaching a celebrity like Cherry a few weeks ago was against the rules. The company that runs the centre, Global Spectrum, said Billy is no longer welcome in the building in his capacity as a volunteer with Rogers TV, which covers OHL games there.

The edict outraged Billy's father, Bill Steele, who's filed a human rights complaint alleging workplace discrimination because his son has a severe learning disability.

Cherry said he is "infuriated" with Global Spectrum over the incident."

I am impressed at the number of comments at CTV, about the school anthem:

http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20090129/o_canada_090129/20090129?hub=TopStories

I simply don't understand how such a judgment could be made. As noted above,

"The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada has cleared the Canadian Human Rights Commission (CHRC) of an Ottawa woman's complaint that it violated her privacy by using her wireless Internet connection to post messages to a white supremacist website during an investigation. Nellie Hechme filed the complaint after she was identified at a public hearing last March as the subscriber associated with an IP address allegedly used by CHRC staff to make the postings. An investigation by the privacy commissioner's office found no evidence the CHRC collected, improperly used, disclosed or retained Ms. Hechme's personal information."

I don't understand this ruling. The CHRC tapped into someone's private Internet account to send messages to a white supremacist web site. The use of her account, rather than the account of the CHRC or the account of the actual sender of the message, was to hide the fact that these messages came from an employee of the CHRC.

How can such an action NOT be a violation of her and her account? What is the difference if I were to write a blackmail letter to someone, using someone else's name and address? Wouldn't that be a criminal offense?

Someone - please explain it to me.

SUBJECT: NATIONAL ANTHEM CHECK

1. All border/immigation officials are hearby directed to question potential new Canadians about their willingness to sing/chant/whisper/hum/recite or engage in otherwise similar actions thereof when faced with a simple challenge to sing Canada's national anthem.

2. Any respondents not so willing should be turned away.

3. Any domiciled Canadian citizens who, in the course of their day-to-duties should happen to chance upon other domiciled Canadians who, in similar situation as outlined in 1 above, behaves simililarly, the former domiciled Canadian citizen is hearby directed to take the latter domiciled Canadian out behind proverbial wood shed.

4. The Department of Citizenship reminds all Canadians that right of citizenship also carries with it duties and responsibilites, one being to sing/chant/hum/whisper or otherwise recite the national anthem.

5. French text to follow.

Duly signed.

philm - what's your point?

A public school, in a nation, has a duty to teach children that they are citizens of a nation. This means a duty to teach them the geography, the history, the political and societal structure, the legal system, and so on. That's on the intellectual side.

It also has a duty to acknowledge the emotional side of their character, and in the case of their citizenship, to encourage them to 'feel' some emotional commitment to this citizenship. You achieve this by the national anthem.

To actually forbid them from developing any emotional commitment to their nation is a violation of their rights, yes, rights, as citizens of a country. The right to develop an emotional bond to one's country, so that one can feel committed to its nurturance, to its evolution, to its integrity of standards. Without such emotional commitment, you'll get an indifferent and uninvolved population.

So, again, what's your point?

ET..I think this is how torture wheel of history turns. Government bureaucrats place themselves above the law, then the lamp posts are decorated with them. However, today it seems unreal in Canada, the tension between population and public servants is only growing. One area where these tensions will come very visible is health care. There are no money for hospitals and medical equipment , yet health authorities indulge in building new offices and throwing money at fictional programs and new fancy bureaucratic positions.

"Two N.L. Liberals say they'll break party ranks, oppose budget if necessary

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Two Liberal MPs from Newfoundland say they will break party ranks and vote against the federal budget next week if changes aren't made that protect $1.5 billion for their province.

Scott Andrews, who represents the riding of Avalon, said Friday he is prepared to oppose the budget because it threatens to take away $1.5 billion in funds under the 1985 Atlantic Accord offshore agreement.

"Newfoundland and Labrador has been getting shafted and it's time for this to stop," Andrews told VOCM Radio.

"Our colleagues out there in the rest of the country don't get it and we've been trying to impress upon them how important this is to Newfoundland and Labrador."

Judy Foote, member for Random-Burin-St. George's, has also said she will vote against the budget if it doesn't protect the Atlantic Accord money.

Premier Danny Williams, who has called on the six Liberal MPs from his province to vote against the budget if it isn't changed, applauded their stand.

"I know they're in a tough spot," Williams said."

I can't believe that SDA is prominently featuring this story!!! Though I see a few others before me have commented on it.

It is THE PERFECT news story to shove in the face of all the Canucky Obamabots. Not years, not months, but just a few weeks after The Messiah was crowned, he is taking some pretty drastic actions to royally screw Canadians. To at least 5 people today I said, "I told you so!!!" And in response, they have absolutely NOTHING to say!

It seems Maher Arar is had enough. In a Corpse story at http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2009/01/29/arar-khadr.html it states "It was shocking," Arar said. "I have to tell you, for a week at least I've been in a deep depression. It's not easy."

I would imagine it's nothing that $10mil or so couldn't cure.

Citation alleges public intoxication by Cody man on a white horse

By RUFFIN PREVOST
Gazette Wyoming Bureau
CODY - A Cody man has been cited for public intoxication while riding his horse on a busy street during a weekend snowstorm.

Police received a call at 4 p.m. Sunday from a motorist who was concerned that Benjamin Daniels, 28, was creating a road hazard by riding his horse in conditions of poor visibility.

An officer stopped Daniels to explain that drivers were having difficulty spotting his slow-moving white horse as he was riding along Yellowstone Avenue near Wal-Mart, said Assistant Police Chief George Menig.

"Because of the wind, the blowing snow and the color of the horse, we were worried he was a danger to himself and motorists," Menig said.
