Thanks EBD! This version is good too
No one can choke me up more than Gillian Welch. She's from another time or maybe timeless. Achingly beautiful singing. Saw her and her brilliant collaborator David Rawlings two nites in succession 3-4 years back: Olympia WA then Seattle. I've got all her CDs the last of which, it seems, is Soul Journey 2003.
Michael Ignatieff, will you please get off your knees, brush your teeth, and gargle, your breath smells like sea-men.
That's a great song and a good rendition of it. My preference (chacun a son gout) is the clarity, articulation, passion, and great production by Emmylou Harris. I can't find a yotube version by her that's the equal of the original recording, but this one will give the flavour:

Layton accuses Ignatieff of "giving Harper a 'get-out-of-jail-free card.'"
What does that mean, really?
What's going on in there, in Layton's head?
I don't think anyone really cares to know.

My time away from Canada has separated me from watching the spectacle of the sport that we call Politics. Returning now, sure it's fun to watch the Video Professor come to the realization that his brightest moment in the sun has now passed.
I also almost spat out my coffee this morning when I heard a guy call into Vancouver's CKNW and condemn Harper for not increasing EI to 2 years! He thought this was a terrible injustice and not very "Christian" of our PM.
But in the bigger picture, I can't help from thinking that with all of the parties we're just watching a stage play, with each actor playing his role to keep us entertained.
Tonight I received an e-mail from a fellow on Facebook who created an anti-Coalition group. He's super ecstatic about the budget and even more so that the Coalition is now dead.
I can't get very excited though. I pointed out to him that the Conservative Party is no longer a conservative party. Oh sure, they're clearly the least worst choice but what REAL efforts did they make to control spending? I don't see much.
And now we have a new deficit of tens of billions of dollars and everyone is ecstatic? Sorry, but I'm not one of them.

"Raped maid not carrier of AIDS: Police"
(Arab News)
(Thus says the Arab News Headline, rather than that 46 MUSLIMS RAPED HER, including Police, for running away from an Arab slave owner)
MAKKAH: Police denied yesterday that an Indonesian maid who was raped by many people in December is an AIDS carrier as reported by several newspapers recently, Al-Watan newspaper reported.
“We do not have evidence that the rape victim or the suspects are carriers of sex-related diseases,” said Maj. Abdul Muhsin Al-Mayman, spokesman for Makkah Police.
Local newspapers reported on Tuesday that 46 men, including a police officer, raped the 38-year-old maid who ran away from her sponsor in the Al-Nuzhah district of the city in December.
The woman was first picked up by a police officer who raped her at a rest house. It was also reported that the woman was abandoned and found by a police patrol that took her to Makkah’s King Faisal Hospital where she has been undergoing treatment for AIDS.

"Forecasting Guru Announces: “no scientific basis for forecasting climate”
28 01 2009
It has been an interesting couple of days. Today yet another scientist has come forward with a press release saying that not only did their audit of IPCC forecasting procedures and found that they “violated 72 scientific principles of forecasting”, but that “The models were not intended as forecasting models and they have not been validated for that purpose.” This organization should know, they certify forecasters for many disciplines and in conjunction with John Hopkins University if Washington, DC, offer a Certificate of Forecasting Practice. One of the claims about “global climate change” is that it will affect the normal ranges of flora and fauna of our planet. Well, with a very cold northern hemisphere this winter, that seems to happening. A bird not seen (as a mature adult) in Massachusetts since the 1800’s , an Ivory Gull, normally an inhabitant of arctic areas, has been spotted. *mr layton inflexibility is astonishing, imagine if you had a colleague or boss who boasted about his eagerness to dismiss a document before even reading it. This is not Leadership, Its Arrogance & dogmatism.
IMO since mr layton wanted to fire the PM just after the people had spoken in a Democratic Election, can We the public Not ask him to step down.

"THE AMAZING STORY BEHIND THE GLOBAL WARMING SCAM
By John Coleman
The key players are now all in place in Washington and in state governments across America to officially label carbon dioxide as a pollutant and enact laws that tax we citizens for our carbon footprints. Only two details stand in the way, the faltering economic times and a dramatic turn toward a colder climate. The last two bitter winters have lead to a rise in public awareness that CO2 is not a pollutant and is not a significant greenhouse gas that is triggering runaway global warming.
How did we ever get to this point where bad science is driving big government we have to struggle so to stop it?
The story begins with an Oceanographer named Roger Revelle. He served with the Navy in World War II. After the war he became the Director of the Scripps Oceanographic Institute in La Jolla in San Diego, California. Revelle saw the opportunity to obtain major funding from the Navy for doing measurements and research on the ocean around the Pacific Atolls where the US military was conducting atomic bomb tests. He greatly expanded the Institute's areas of interest and among others hired Hans Suess, a noted Chemist from the University of Chicago, who was very interested in the traces of carbon in the environment from the burning of fossil fuels. Revelle tagged on to Suess studies and co-authored a paper with him in 1957. The paper raises the possibility that the carbon dioxide might be creating a greenhouse effect and causing atmospheric warming. It seems to be a plea for funding for more studies. Funding, frankly, is where Revelle's mind was most of the time.
Next Revelle hired a Geochemist named David Keeling to devise a way to measure the atmospheric content of Carbon dioxide. In 1960 Keeling published his first paper showing the increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and linking the increase to the burning of fossil fuels.
These two research papers became the bedrock of the science of global warming, even though they offered no proof that carbon dioxide was in fact a greenhouse gas. In addition they failed to explain how this trace gas, only a tiny fraction of the atmosphere, could have any significant impact on temperatures.
Now let me take you back to the 1950s when this was going on."

These days, the only time Julia Boyd, 11, gets to belt out the anthem's lyrics is at monthly school assemblies, other special occasions or at home with her older sister Kara.
That's because singing O Canada is no longer a daily morning event at Belleisle Elementary. The school's principal has dropped it in response to concerns from other parents.
"It makes me sad, upset," Julia said. "I didn't feel very good about it."

But, there is concern on their side of the border too:
"Global companies based in the United States such as General Electric and Honda -- two of Ohio's biggest employers -- and business groups including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce warn that foreign nations could retaliate, when the United States can least afford a trade war.
"We think that this kind of language could bring about reciprocal restrictions on U.S. exports," said Peter O'Toole, a spokesman for General Electric. Just over half the company's $183 billion in 2008 revenue came from exports, he said.
That includes jet engines built near Cincinnati, and locomotives made in G.E.'s Erie, Pa., plant, sold to China, Russia and South Africa.
"International and free trade have been very good for Ohio," said Honda vice president Edward B. Cohen, "and this kind of protectionism inevitably leads to retaliation, which isn't good for anybody."

The Communist Party itself had at that time about 35 million members–roughly one in thirty of the Chinese population. It was as if the entire country was being run by the Boy Scouts. Policies would originate in possibly detailed and nuanced debate at the Central Committee level (leavened with lots of purges, banishments to the countryside, and other fun activities). The winning faction’s position would then be channelled down the funnel of the Party’s enormous membership, until it hit the local level where it would be implemented.

"Scientists Rank Global Cooling Hacks"
Not all climate hacks are created equal.
The dozens of ways that scientists, as well as crackpots, have proposed to geoengineer the world's climate won't all be equally effective. In fact, some of them, particularly the ones that rely on sucking up carbon dioxide instead of blocking out solar radiation, will hardly have any impact at all, a new study in the journal Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics found.
"By 2050, only stratospheric aerosol injections or sunshades in space have the potential to cool the climate back toward its pre-industrial state," earth scientists Tim Lenton and Naomi Vaughan of East Anglia University in England write.
Many global cooling approaches have been floated."

Note the politicization of Harper's budget by Ignatieff. Ignatieff has set himself up in a role of The Sovereign Ruler. He is insisting that His Government, which happens to be run by his lackey, Harper, must provide periodic updates to him.
Get it? Ignatieff is setting himself up as the Actual Governor (I mean Governor and not Government) of Canada. The Harper Government is reduced to being in His Majesty's Service. His Majesty Ignatieff has informed this lowly government that 'they are on probation'.
Who set up Ignatieff to be our Sovereign? WE are the sovereign of our government. Not Ignatieff.
Oh, and Harper had already built in updates to parliament on the results of the budget. As Sandy on Crux of the Matter points out, on p. 72 of this budget, it states:
"Stimulus Accountability Framework"
“Over the spring and summer of 2009, the Government’s focus will be on implementing the measures set out above. The Government will provide an initial report on progress this summer, and responsible ministers will provide an update to Parliament the first week following the summer recess. The Government will reassess and, if necessary, reallocate funding in the 2009 Economic and Fiscal Update.“
Harper had put in progress reports to Parliament already. I'll bet the MSM, who don't read budgets anyway, won't report on this. Instead, they'll focus on Ignatieff's 'requirements for reports by His Probationary Government'.
They'll ignore that Ignatieff is operating, not as a MP, not as Leader of the Opposition, but as an autocratic Sovereign.

"Most in town lose power [Adair County, OK]
WESTVILLE — The gravity of this week's ice storm weighed on Mary Hopkins.
Speaking through tears, the Westville resident recounted Wednesday how the storm had zapped her trailer's electricity, dropped a tree limb through the back glass of her 2001 Saturn and separated her from her beloved Chihuahuas.
"It's terrible," Hopkins said from a seat in the Assembly of God, where the American Red Cross is operating a shelter. "No electricity, limbs everywhere. My car got messed up ... My little dogs are in the trailer. I'm worried about my little dogs. I've had them since they were babies."
Similar scenes continued to play out Wednesday in parts of northeastern Oklahoma hit hardest by the storm.
The aftermath was apparent in the small Adair County town of Westville, where ice-covered tree limbs ripped down power lines and blocked streets, cutting off electricity to about 70 percent of the residents, said Mayor Brian Sitsler.
According to the National Weather Service, ice as thick as an inch formed in large portions of Cherokee and Adair counties — areas hit hardest by the storm Monday and Tuesday."

Interesting report on FATA:
Anthony Loyd, Blown Up in Bin Laden Country
Yet the British left more of a legacy on the frontier than the untended graves of long-dead soldiers. In an effort to establish a mechanism of control between their authority and the wayward tribes, they introduced the Frontier Crimes Regulation (FCR) in 1901. It was both a punitive and administrative measure. In each agency local "maliks", hereditary British appointees, acted as middlemen between their tribes and a political agent, who in turn reported to Peshawar. While allowing the Pashtun tribes a wide degree of autonomy, exempting them from tax and the power of the central judiciary, the FCR also allowed for the collective punishment of unruly tribes by fines, blockade and the seizure of their land and possessions. Individuals could be transported or imprisoned without trial, and houses suspected of sheltering criminals destroyed. By any modern standard the law was a gross violation of human rights.
But it still exists today, little changed in form since it was drawn up over a century ago, source of a growing sense of injustice and abandonment in the tribal agencies...
The economy wrecked? France's solution? Strike.

bryanr- it's going to be interesting; how is Ignatieff going to be defined by the other paries and how is he defining himself?
My view of him is that he acts as a Sovereign, a Supreme Authority. Parliamentary MPs are merely his minions. That's why he, as Sovereign, has declared that Harper is 'on probation'. He sets himself up as OUTSIDE of parliament! He is imposing his WILL on parliament. This is how he is setting himself up. Is this becoming clear to most of us? We can see comments about this in the MSM and blogs.
Quebec, by the way, likes Sovereigns who do all the work of taxing Big Corporations and giving all the money to 'the artists, the culturally inclined' and so on.
So far, the Conservatives haven't defined Ignatieff, as they did so rapidly with Dion. I wonder why not and when and how they will.
I'm not sure of the success of the NDP ads in defining Ignatieff as a 'lackey' of Harper. Ignatieff is doing the opposite; trying to define Harper as a 'lackey' of Ignatieff.
And since the majority of Canadians, raised in the Liberal generation long era of Big Nanny State Welfare Government, approve of this budget - then, I don't think the NDP ads will succeed.
It's getting monotonous; but, another one re AGoreacle'sWeather. That's it. No more.

i think the NDP are just venting steam. They are just ticked and they feel that they have been betrayed, Layton was so sure he was going to be Deputy PM, Missed it by that, Much. (Get Smart). I also think that they are now going to use a S.Harper tactic of Pre-emptive attack ads.
I also think the Conservatives are going to go easy on their ads(on ignatieff) till such time they will be needed, seeing also that Canadians have had enough Election Rhetoric and attacks for now. They new Dion was easy prey & that he was just itching to go to an election so the election would be sooner then later even though the PM called his card, the conservatives know that the liberals under Ignatieff will not attempt another attack until the amo is replenished & they also need time to sell their new King.
BTW: i too was wondering what has happened to Dion & i was also asking the question the other day on here, Also has Ms May gone underground as she was strangely quiet after the Budget announcements & the Liberals Blessed Approveall.
Jacks Attacks can be heard via NNW link to the NDP site or if your brave enough just go to the NDP site. The NDP are also asking for a Monetary contribution from you inorder to pay for the ads. So if you have a spare $110.,$200 or even $400.

Still happy about Carter-light as President?
What possible reason could Layton and the NDP have for publicly attacking Ignatieff? Any chance, although slim, of a future coalition of the swilling has now been completely eliminated with the burning of this bridge. What political gains could be made by Layton with these attacks? Is he simply striking out at Ignatieff because he wisely refused to cozy up to the socialists and separatists ... oops... sovereignists? I think Mr. Layton has removed all doubt as to his principles and sanity. The sooner the NDP punt this silly little man out of the leadership job, they better off they will be. That being said however, it is in the best interests of Canadians to have Layton retain his job thereby keeping the NDP on the fringes where they belong.

Agreed. Ignatieff is playing the arrogant 'natural governing party' card. And it's working, temporarily at least. Front page headlines today cheered the Liberal leader. With half the seats, he's put the 143 seat governing party "on probation," of all things.
Now he's got the NDP and the Bloc pissed. Perfect.
The Conservative's best move is to position him, based on his own written testimonial and statements, as a Conservative. And therefore, not different at all. After that he will have to define himself and his party as being different.
What wiggle room will he have in the middle of a decidedly centrist Conservative party and the NDP?
Crushed by his own petrie dish petard.
