I don't pay too much attention to British papers.

But this article caught my eye.

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/article2146286.ece

It's "Bach to the Future" with Johann Sebastian, I've also got that on CD in my music collection.

But if you want to surf the net a little Watermusick helps, if you can get a Handel on it.

Cheers

Aye, Hans, we have A Touch of Brass on vinyl here in the studios. They really are kind of amazing in a handful of interesting ways, and I must say that I've sure never heard any other brass quintet do what they did in tonight's show.

Oatmeal,

I, on the other hand, find much in British papers - including a preview as to where we're going next. They can also offer a refreshing take on events, and are generally more eloquently written than North American efforts.

On Obama's fawn fest:
"After George Bush’s election victory in 2004, Democrats urged him to be frugal, pointing to President Roosevelt’s 1945 inauguration when he made a short speech and served guests ‘cold chicken salad and plain pound cake.’"

...

"But Mr Obama’s inauguration committee says it doesn’t believe Americans will consider the celebrations excessive.
‘That is probably not the way the country is going to be looking at it,’ said committee spokeswoman Linda Douglass.
‘It is not a celebration of an election. It is a celebration of our common values.’"

The Americans who will not "consider the celebrations excessive" are likely those who celebrate the "common values" of perhaps 'tolerance'(of lies, deceit, and hatred of all things associated with our Judeo-Christian heritage), 'progressiveness' (toward a rapid decline in civility, morality, society and living standards), and sustainability (of the hot air of the AGW Chicken Littles). In Mr. Obama's Inaugural Committee's attitude, Marie ("let them eat gateau" Antoinette may have actually met her match.

Now were they to be swearing in a Republican, say another "first" (as in the first woman president), can you see Hollywood D.C. putting on the same show with such gusto? The networks taking out full page ads promoting it? The CBC soliciting candidates to help, say, Sarah Palin, get a taste of Canada? (Well, perhaps they'd give the honour to a montage of Carolyn Parrish quotes? Republication of Heather Mallick's famous CBC.ca column?) Naomi would probably be arguing for a boycott of it, too.

Hans, I just gotta ask, what is, and why do you have that signature?

1. MILITARY STRUCTURE: In any Western army, a battalion is a subordinate group to a regiment or brigade. Brigades and regiments are not subordinate units of battalions.

That would correctly be: "the Second Battalion, Second Infantry Regiment, of the Third Brigade of the First Infantry Division". Torch writers and readers know a regiment is not part of a battalion any more than a police department is part of a precinct.

I refer you to Joel Rosenberg's blog (through www.joelrosenberg.com) for more.

After that, I'm going to replace, and add to my collection of Bach recordings. I was a fan after hearing Walter Carlos, soundtrack to Clockwork Orange, and his Switched on Bach.
A novel way to spread the word about Classical music, that doesn't appear stuffy, or pretentious.

I'll need some new speakers as well.GOODY!

A very Canadian performance, a little too fast, a little too glib, and a big old major chord at the end that JSB thought should be a minor to complete the whole theme of the mad rush of life to death, but then, what would he know?

Almost entirely missed the majesty and the drama of the original, but at this point of course, the North American entertainment industry has pretty much wrecked Bach's master work and turned it into something it was never intended to be, the backdrop for cartoon characters.

The Dalai Lama, a lifelong champion of non-violence on Saturday candidly stated that terrorism cannot be tackled by applying the principle of ahimsa because the minds of terrorists are closed.

"It is difficult to deal with terrorism through non-violence," the Tibetan spiritual leader said delivering the Madhavrao Scindia Memorial Lecture here.

He also termed terrorism as the worst kind of violence which is not carried by a few mad people but by those who are very brilliant and educated.

"They (terrorists) are very brilliant and educated...but a strong ill feeling is bred in them. Their minds are closed," the Dalai Lama said.

He said that the only way to tackle terrorism is through prevention. The head of the Tibetan government-in-exile left the audience stunned when he said "I love President George W Bush." He went on to add how he and the US President instantly struck a chord in their first meeting unlike politicians who take a while to develop close ties.

"Indian artist S. H. Raza finds exhibition of his work full of fakes

India's art world is reeling from one of its most embarrassing forgery cases today after S.H. Raza, one of the country's foremost artists, inaugurated an exhibition of his paintings in Delhi – only to discover that most were fakes.

Mr Raza, who is based in Paris, had contributed some drawings to the show at the Dhoomimal Gallery while the gallery had borrowed about 30 more paintings – supposedly his early works – from his nephew.

"When I reached the gallery and started looking at the canvases on the walls, I was stunned," Mr Raza wrote in an Indian newspaper.

"As I moved from one canvas to the other, I realised that the works were just not mine, they were all fakes," he said. "I will turn 86 next month. At this stage of my life, this was the last thing I wanted to do – grace an exhibition of my own fake paintings.""

Unmasked?

The city of Montreal is drafting a bylaw that would make it illegal for people to hide their identity at protests.
Mayor Gerald Tremblay says banning masks, hoods and other types of face coverings would help prevent violence.
The move comes at the request of the police department, though some are questioning whether the proposal would violate constitutional rights.
But Claude Dauphin, the executive committee member in charge of public security, says the bylaw will target only the most flagrant violators.
“If an individual goes to a demonstration with a 2-by-4 and a ski mask probably if he wears a ski mask he doesn't want to be identified,” said Dauphin.
He adds the wording of the amendment should be ready by the end of the month with a vote at city council at the end of February.

... ... ...

WHAT???!!!

Could any liberal show me where it says it is a constitutional right in Canada to do criminal acts and hide behind a mask so as to not get caught?

The Muslims want to kill the Dalai Lama:

Lumbini (AsiaNews) – Nepal’s three million Buddhists are alarmed over death threats made against the Dalai Lama, allegedly by Islamic extremist group Lashkar-e-Toiba. In Lumbini, Buddha’s birth place in southern Nepal, monks and lay people are praying for him.

A local monk, Bhante Jaydeo, told AsiaNews that the Dalai Lama “is an apostle of non violence and peace. In spite of being a victim of Chinese Communist violence he has never preached for a violent uprising in Tibet and has always called for reconciliation” with Beijing. “Here in town monks and the faithful have prepared special prayers for his safety.”

When an Indian paper reported the threat on April 1, police in Dharamsala (India) where the Dalai Lama lives in exile stepped up security arrangements.

Lashkar-e-Toiba is based in Pakistani-held Kashmir and is among the most powerful Islamic terrorist groups in South Asia. It is thought to be tied to al-Qaeda and it has been held responsible for many attacks in India.

For experts, the threat made against the Buddhist leader is probably connected to a recent statement attributed to Osama bin Laden against all religions other than Islam, including “pagan Buddhism.”

Sarkowsky: Arabic is the "language of the future, of science and of modernity!"

This time Allies, let them go down.

(Brussels Journal)

In his message to the participants, French President Nicolas Sarkozy called Arabic the "language of the future, of science and of modernity," and expressed the hope that "more French people share in the language that expresses great civilizational and spiritual values."

"We must invest in the Arabic language (because) to teach it symbolizes a moment of exchange, of openness and of tolerance, (and it) brings with it one of the oldest and most prestigious civilizations of the world. It is in France that we have the greatest number of persons of Arabic and Muslim origin. Islam is the second religion of France," Sarkozy reminded his listeners.

Hey, Friend of USA, this is Canada, the land of never wanting to offend -- or be seen to offend -- newly arrived sociopathic elements in our society who might want to harm Canadians and disturb our, up to now, civil society, all under the guise of "tolerance," "openness," and "diversity."

This is one good example of why Mark Steyn so succinctly describes Canada as the Deranged Dominion.

So, I was going to provide a link to the National Post and the Globe and Mail of coverage of the Pro-Israel Rally at Dundas Square yesterday but couldn't find anything in either papers. Either my searching abilities are sadly lacking, which is a distinct possibility, or both papers are sadly lacking.

There was an important political statement being made, peacefully and respectfully, with no one wearing masks or flying flags of illegal groups, so how come neither the np or the g&m have anything on the rally?

Is it because there was so little "drama"? The police had nothing to do, as far as I can see, except to be on hand IN CASE things got out of hand.

The deportment of the crowd in itself should be news, given the violent and hate-filled rants of the pro-Palestinian crowd last week. How about an article contrasting the two approaches? How about some journalist comparing the modus operandi of the two sides and asking the daring question: Which of these two ideologies/political philosophies would you like to live under -- or beside?

I suggest there's no contest. But, could we please have the discussion in our media and not just in the blogosphere?

Kudos to Sandy for her diligent work compiling a whole list of “Iggyisms”. I can’t imagine how daunting that task would have been. Having to wade through Iggypuff’s utterings is not my idea of a fun afternoon, but Sandy took one for the team.

Even better, she kindly allowed the historical collection to be cross-posted at BLY for everyone’s pleasure and puzzlement.

I found this one shocking:

April 2, 1998 — ON QUEBECERS: “Quebecers walk around with this fantasy of how different they are, but they are just North Americans who speak French. They take the minor differences and magnify it.”

O.K. So this is the guy that seduced Quebec? Comment? Je ne comprends pas.

But that’s o.k. Because Iggypuff knows all. We mere mortals must get up to speed.

Even today, we heard another Iggygem which merits our attention due to its unique brilliance and insightful insightfulness:

STOPIGGY.

Go to five feet of fury to view a video from yesterday's rally.

http://www.fivefeetoffury.com/

Did it ever pi** me off: The police playing interference for the poor Muslims who'd set up a kiosk to disseminate information on Islam and who were being engaged by two women on the question of why Muslims were allowed to come to Jerusalem whereas Jews are not allowed to go to Mecca. As I recall, one of the men answered that the mosque is in Mecca.

So?

The discussion was mildly confrontational, on both sides, and then the police step in. When one of the women asks why they're being asked to disperse -- isn't there free speech in Canada? -- the policeman answers "yes," but on the other side of the street (where the pro-Israel rally was taking place).

Then one of Toronto's "finest" said that he wanted "to educate" the women "to prevent" any unpleasantness.

EXCUSE ME?

So, where were the police at last week's pro-Palestinian rally, when Hamas and Hezbollah demonstrators were shouting obscenities at pro-Israeli demonstrators and waving flags of groups that have been outlawed in Canada? Why did the police tell the pro-Israeli demonstrators that THEY had to move along and not the pro-Palestinian demonstrators?

There's some kind of sick double standard here. The unruly Muslims waving flags of outlawed groups in Canada will never be asked to move along -- nor have their flags confiscated -- while the peaceful pro-Israeli demonstrators will be "educated" and told to go somewhere else.

The pandering toadiness of the Toronto Police towards the Islamist crowd is disconcerting and disgusting. Yes, the inversion of Canada continues: What is peaceful is considered a threat and what is truly threatening is considered in need of protection.

Saw that article as well. Two thoughts, neither of which is comforting

1) It is a bio experiment on the part of AlQ that got out of control, imagine 100 of the walking dead martyrs sent to Europe, or in amongst Nato troops...neither a nice thought

2) Induced by our side. I hope this is not true because it means our side stops at nothing, and as always there are unintended consequences to worry about.

You're missing the larger picture. While there is a two way street of enforcement and ensuring equality of treatment to citizens, Caledonians are still getting screwed by their Conservative government. All the nice people at SDA have chosen to ignore it, or have forgotten.

Either or, the government knows this clearly. And plays you for it.

Finley muddled gov't position in Caledonia by signing petition: critics
TORONTO — Human Resources Minister Diane Finley may have jeopardized talks aimed at settling a long-standing aboriginal land dispute in southern Ontario when she signed a petition that criticizes provincial police, critics say. The petition calls for a public inquiry into the actions of Ontario Provincial Police Commissioner Julian Fantino in Caledonia, a town in Finley's riding of Haldimand-Norfolk.
The document, which has collected more than 4,000 signatures, was drafted by local residents who complain that police have mishandled the aboriginal occupation that's dragged on for nearly three years, with no end in sight. The dispute has erupted in several violent clashes between homeowners and the native protesters occupying a 40-hectare tract of land on the outskirts of Caledonia...."

And yes, the story is a 'gotcha' that is somewhat loaded. But the facts themselves still remain.

The point is that Jim Prentice The Red fed the Indian Industry hundreds of millions of dollars in budget increases, and improved nothing.

And the game continues. How much of this oncoming orgy of spending will find its way to the lawyers?

Ultimately, the police and government play and treat different citizens differently. This happens amongst differing nationalities, races, regions, and of course, income.

And they wait until you move on to your next outrage.

Which, it appears has already happened.

Canadians feel the love for Obama, but are lukewarm to his plans: poll
Less than 4 per cent report negative view of U.S. president-elect

Canadians have a crush on Barack Obama leading up his inauguration Tuesday as the 44th president of the United States, but that sense of approval doesn't extend to policies that could affect their lives, according to a poll done for CBC News.

Interestingly, when respondents were asked whether their own Conservative government running a deficit to stimulate a slowing economy would be a problem, the concern wasn't as great, though still substantial. About 53 per cent thought it would be a serious problem, with 19 per cent saying it would be somewhat serious....."

The EKOS poll found only 3.8 per cent of respondents have a negative view of the Democratic president-elect, compared to 81 per cent who approve of his performance as he prepares to take over the Oval Office. (Another 15 per cent said they didn't know or had no opinion on the matter.)

Tax cuts, infrastructure projects and EI reforms needed: Ignatieff
Last Updated: Thursday, January 8, 2009
CBC News

Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff says he would consider speedy tax cuts, infrastructure projects and changes to the employment insurance program if he were prime minister.

When asked what he would do during his first 100 days in office if he became prime minister, Ignatieff said "quick tax cuts" will help stimulate the economy.

"Tax cuts targeted at medium- to low-income Canadians will boost their purchasing power," he said. "There's a strong case for tax relief for the more vulnerable."

"Patrick McGoohan finally escaped," a reader of the French newspaper Le Monde noted with loving tenderness yesterday in an online forum dedicated to the late visionary behind the cult TV series The Prisoner. The sentiment came just short of asserting that the actor, writer, and director was better off dead, but then, the French have had a distinctly existential relationship with their revered secret agent man for 40 years now.

For the Met Office the forecast is considerable embarrassment. It has spent £33m on a new supercomputer to calculate how climate change will affect Britain – only to find the new machine has a giant carbon footprint of its own. “The new supercomputer, which will become operational later this year, will emit 14,400 tonnes of CO2 a year,” said Dave Britton, the Met Office’s chief press officer. This is equivalent to the CO2 emitted by 2,400 homes – generating an average of six tonnes each a year. The Met Office recently published some of its most drastic predictions for future climate change. It warned: “If no action is taken to curb global warming temperatures are likely to rise by 5.5ºC and could rise as much as 7ºC above pre-industrial levels by 2100. Early and rapid reductions in CO2 emissions are required to avoid significant impacts of climate change.” However, when it came to buying a new supercomputer, the Met Office decided not to heed its own warnings."

Khadr identified Arar as visitor at al-Qaeda facilities, agent testifies

GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba — A teenaged Omar Khadr identified Canadian Maher Arar, who was tortured in Syria after he was sent there by American authorities, as someone he had seen at al-Qaida safe houses and training camps in Afghanistan, an FBI special agent testified Monday.

Mr. Khadr made the identification from photographs the agent, Robert Fuller, showed him during interrogations several months after the Toronto-born Mr. Khadr was captured following a firefight in Afghanistan in July 2002.

“He identified him by name,” Mr. Fuller testified. “He said he had never seen him in Canada.”

No case whatsoever. Ridiculous.

02:48 Brunette: "Am I allowed to stay here or is it against the law?"

02:52 Cop #1: "Okay, let me educate you about something called breach of the peace. If it gets to the point where we determine that it's a breach of the peace, then arrests will be made."

03:03 Son of Brunette: "A conversation's not a breach of the peace."

03:06 Brunette: “Is it?”

03:07 Cop #1: "It is when it creates a problem."

03:08 Son: "What problem has it created? There's no violence going on."

03:15 Cop #1: "If you don't want it to get to that point, we're just trying to educate you of what our options are."

03:18 Son: "We don't want it to get to that point either but there's nothing wrong with discussion."

03:33 Cop #1, pointing: "Okay, look, there's your team [people?] over there."

03:36 Brunette: "That's not my team [people?]... The gentleman said everything was fine until I came here on his side."

03:45 Cop #1: "He was right."

03:49 Brunette: “...Unless you take me away somewhere.”

03:52 Cop #1: “That’s exactly what you want and that’s not gonna happen.”

06:27 Man at booth: “Free Koran.”

06:38 Passerby: “Can I have one, please? I’m gonna burn it.”

And something else I think needs to be said, something that was touched upon by the young speaker from India:

Jewish people need to acknowledge, accept, and be encouraging of, the support they receive from individuals and groups that are not Jewish. Although the Holocaust was a particular and horrifying cross to bear (forgive my mixing of metaphors), they are not the only group in this post-modernist world that is being persecuted by brutal, totalitarian forces although their battle is particularly immediate.

There are many individuals and groups who are standing with Israel and the Israelis in their fight to exist and prosper in the ME. It can only benefit all of us who value democratic values of freedom and civil discourse to work closely together as partners. Tribalism, as ET always points out, is retrogressive.
