Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your delectation and pursuant to our Thursday night wild-card show, here are Ian Dury and The Blockheads performing Reasons to be Cheerful, Part 3 (1979, 4:46).

Nota Bene: I'm modifying the SDA LNR schedule slightly, as follows. Firstly, starting last week, Saturday night will, at least for the next some months, now be our Distinguished Lecture, Documentary & Interview show. Secondly, our old Saturday night contemporary music show has been merged into our Thursday night wild-card show (which already contains country, folk, comedy, and miscellanea), thus explaining tonight's show. Our other shows remain as currently scheduled: Sunday is classical music, Monday is jazz, Tuesday is vintage music, Wednesday is DJ EBD, and Friday is old-time radio.

Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

Thanks Vitruvius - I would love to see more documentaries - I'm not so successful finding them myself

Michael Coren the other night discussing Sid Ryan:

Vitruvius,

"Temporal measurement, or chronometry, takes two distinct period forms: the calendar, a mathematical abstraction for calculating extensive periods of time ... The number (as on a clock dial or calendar) that marks the occurrence of a specified event as to hour or date is obtained by counting from a fiducial epoch — a central reference point."

Your changes are giving me a headache.

Thank you for posting those video segments, Matt. Does everyone realize how incredibly naive Marilyn Churley is? Dictators and terrorists LOVE useful idiots like her.

Understood, Ural, yet for a Late Nite Radio show, especially one that is archived into the next day &c, and that is available across all time zones, the issue of which titular night it is, v. what the formal timestamp is (in some particular timezone), is open to debate. For example, if one had an 23:00 late nite show, would one do Valentine's Day on February 13th, or 14th?

An alternative, of course, is simply to ignore
my ruminations, and just Let the Music Play.

Something comes to mind. Europe - careful who you chose as role-models, friends, ideology.

Governments across Europe declared states of emergency and ordered factories to close as Russia cut all gas supplies through Ukraine yesterday in their worsening dispute over unpaid bills. José Manuel Barroso, the European Commission President, accused the two countries of taking the EU's energy supply "hostage" amid a cold snap across the Continent, and urged them to reopen the pipelines immediately. Schools and factories were closed and trees were felled to keep home fires burning after Russia turned off the gas taps to more than a dozen countries. It was a clear demonstration of the dependence of the Continent on Russian gas supplies. Slovakia's Government followed Bulgaria by announcing that it may have to restart a mothballed Soviet-era nuclear power plant.
--The Times, 8 January 2009

Temperatures plunged to record lows in Germany and heavy snow forced normally sunny Marseille to close its international airport as freezing winter weather gripped much of Europe on Wednesday. Port authorities in the Dutch city of Rotterdam deployed an icebreaking ship for the first time 12 years, while in Britain forecasters issued a new severe weather warning. In the Balkans, thousands shivered in their homes after gas supplies to southeastern Europe were cut as a result of a contract dispute between Russia and Ukraine, reminding many of the freezing winters they endured in the wars of the 1990s.
--Reuters, 7 January 2009

Europe would be immune to this sort of disruption if those nations developed their own energy resources. But the only existing technologies that can do the job are nuclear power and hydrocarbons - coal, oil, and natural gas. The global warming theory - indeed, environmentalism in general - is a conscious and deliberate strategy on the part of international socialists to weaken and destroy the western democracies. The content of the climate agreements does not matter. The important thing is the establishment of unelected international authorities to regulate things.
--DuPree Moore, 7 January 2009

But the cash from UN grants, wind farms, carbon trading and all the billions squandered on a politically useful (to totalitarians) superstition is very clear indeed: this is big bucks. "Man-made" global warming is the new sub-prime commerce of the planet. Meantime, wrap up well.
--Gerald Warner, The Daily Telegraph blog, 7 January 2009

Efforts to sell climate policy based on ever more scary scenarios of apocalypse cannot be sustained and are likely to work in exactly the opposite manner than desired. A good example of why this is so can be found in a recent paper (hat tip Dad) that suggests that the rate of sea level rise from 2003-2008 (2.5 mm/year) is 20% lower than that presented by the IPCC for 1993-2003 (3.1 mm/year). Whether this is "consistent with" longer-term predictions is different that whether it is "consistent with" a political strategy based on scaring people. It seems pretty obvious that systems that exhibit a large amount of variability or are simply poorly understood on relatively short time scales are not very useful props in efforts to show the world moving inexorably towards doom.

One of the worst major newspapers in the U.S. (and I don't say that lightly) appears to be about to fold:

Fold ? Probably because of what's 'above the fold' ! heh.

Harper has no plans to repeal s.13 of the "human rights" act?

Then maybe I have no plans to vote Conservative in future.

Polygamy charges laid against faux Mormons in Bountiful, B.C.

Does anyone recall that when the gay marriage debate was going on, and people predicted that it would lead to polygamy, supporters said that would never happen?

A few years later, the "experts" are saying that the polygamy law will probably be found unconstitutional, if this case goes to court.

Unlike some people who post here, I don't have any objection to gay marriage, as long as the churches can steer clear if they want. The real issue in my opinion is the tax breaks and pension rights, etc., that come along with partnerships recognized by government.

But this polygamy problem shows the whole issue needs more thought, which is always in short supply ...

What polygamy problem?

The BC government wants votes, and has found an unpopular group with an unpopular faith to push around to get the votes.

But it's only a problem if the people involved in it say it's a problem, not if the big-city sophisticates in Vancouver and Victoria find it offensive. Too bad for them, the feeling is mutual in many cases.

Isn't there a certain amount of undeclared polygamy in some religions practiced in BC besides this one? Let's see the mutli-cults go after those polygamists with equal zeal.

And for that matter, the gay lifestyle often involves multiple partners. I thought that was now tres chic. Can't be bothered finding the accent, I will leave that to poseurs.

In case Iggy doesn't work out for the Libs, here's another fellow from south of the border who they might want to appoint. Language warning!

He's obviously consumed too much caffeine but when it comes down to it, doesn't everyone on the Radical Left think like this, to one degree or another?

A suggestion for late night music - Celturian is a master of the guitar!

For Saturdays, try to find clips of James Burke (of 'Connections' fame). Just an idea.

A big thanks to Irwin Daisy in the Carolyn Parrish thread for posting those video links. They were troubling to watch but also important. I just saw the one of the Hamas terrorist grabbing a child to use as a human shield. It absolutely broke my heart.

Then sure enough I found an item posted on LibLogs.ca that defends this practice! You can read it here. In case this pile of human filth deletes my comment, you can see the video near the top of my blog.

Love these bias headlines this morning from ...

The polygamy debate is kind of useless. TO."s welfare allows for multiple wives. You can get a welfare check for each. Now as that is the case how can the attacking of the Bountiful sect be anything but religious persecution?
For me I don't get too upset over what other people do with their lives but I do like that whole "fair" thing. If one religion can marry 8 year olds and that is Ok how can you say the other is wrong for marrying at the used to be legal age of 14?

By the way, thanks for the show Vit. Appreciated.

Polygamy ?

How about child rape & sex slavery. These men use their positions of power and authority to command mothers to send young girls to them for impregnation. They are very sick puppies, preying on the most innocent of children.

And those "peaceful" communities ?

Ask them what happens to the boys when they reach 16 years old ?

That's an echo from SDA.

Bec said it here*.

"Does no one else find this bizarre? I heard an interview with, Scott Brison today saying the exact opposite of this position from 'the appointed one" re taxation etc.

It reminds me of a dysfunctional marriage, when the other spouse is glaring at the speaking spouse and thinking, shut up, *you don't speak for me.

"Get me a Massacre: Up next — the Kfar Qana of Operation Cast Lead

Whether by Israeli accident or Hamas engineering, expect a spectacular civilian massacre in the coming days, followed by an orgy of Pallywood photography, amplified by a compliant Western media, and even greater fury in the streets of the Muslim and Western world. It’s in the Hamas playbook… and will be until the media gets sober. Here’s the background, and the obscenity that will probably be played.

Barry Rubin has laid out the various endgames open to Hamas, and how, when all else fails, it’s the media reserves you draw on to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. And it’s an old story: Arafat called the Western media, busy drinking at the Commodore Hotel in Beirut under the protection of his mafiosi while his “guerillas” participated in a civil war (1975-82) that killed 100,000 civilians, his best division.

The pattern has long been clear, and most recently carried out with explosive effectiveness in the Lebanon war of 2006… *when Israel is winning, get yourself a civilian massacre."

For the third time in eight months, a social scientist with the Army's Human Terrain cultural research program has died.

In early November, while on patrol in an Afghan village, Paula Loyd was doused with a flammable liquid, and set on fire. She suffered second- and third-degree burns over 60 percent of her body. Loyd was rushed to a nearby medical center, where she was treated by a burn specialist. Shortly thereafter, Loyd was evacuated to the military's Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, and then to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. But after a two month struggle, she was overcome by her injuries...

...the Bush administration, which had little knowledge of Afghanistan, was sucked into a project founded on a number of illusions. The chief illusion was that Afghanistan could develop a system of highly centralized government headed by a U.S.-style president and a strong executive branch. That scheme ignored Afghanistan’s historical and geographical realities. Afghanistan emerged as a loosely knit independent state in the 18th century and was accepted as a buffer setting the limits of the Tsarist, Persian, and British empires in Central Asia. A patchwork of ethnic and religious communities, Afghanistan developed a system of rule in which tribal chiefs and Muslim clerics enjoyed a great measure of autonomy under the nominal suzerainty of a distant king who never tried to impose his will throughout his realm by force. The idea that Afghanistan is a land of unruly tribes was generally recognized in the Muslim world. It was not for nothing that Muslims always referred to Afghanistan as Taghistan (“The Land of Insolence”)...

The best structure for Afghanistan is that of a loose federation in which its 18 ethnic and religious communities enjoy full economic, cultural, and administrative autonomy. Yet the system developed in Afghanistan since 2002 has gone in the exact opposite direction...

"Liberal blogger: Hamas wise to use human shields

I really can't keep up. It seems like every hour another Liberal blogger says something absolutely nuts about Hamas and Israel.

Here's a member of Liblogs.ca justifying Hamas's use of civilian shields.

I'm not surprised that his site is adorned with a Teutonic Cross, which I've copied and pasted to the left.

If this appeared on a Tory site, it would be national news and the Canadian Human Rights Commission would be investigating.

I'm wondering how long the excuse of "it's just a blogger" will last."

Mississauga Matt at January 8, 2009 11:43 PM,

MM, thanks for Coren videos, I'm going to try to watch him more regularly. He certainly knows how to run a good discussion.

Marilyn Churley literally sends chills up my spine; she can efficiently represent everything despicable about people of her ilk, in a few short minutes; arrogance, shrillness, and relativism all packaged nicely in self-importance.

I particularly like the part where she says …it’s difficult [for me] these days to criticize Israel without being called anti-Semitic…

"The Coldest Weather Possible In Nearly 15 Years

Bitterly cold air bottled up over the depths of the Arctic will plunge southward next week, gripping the eastern two-thirds of the nation.

The frigid air will likely arrive in two waves. The first shot will blast the Midwest and Northeast early next week. The second, which will prove to be the harshest, will encompass virtually all places east of the Rockies by next weekend.

Expert Senior Meteorologist Elliot Abrams reports, "Joe Bastardi has been talking about a daytime temperature below zero in Chicago and a nighttime low near 0 in New York City... and if one of these Arctic highs makes the plunge south and east, those ideas will turn out right."

Blustery winds will usher in the arctic air, resulting in even colder and potentially dangerous temperatures.

The air Friday over a portion of Alaska was colder than the air anywhere else in the northern hemisphere. That is the source region for the air coming into the northern Plains next week.

There are early indications of a reinforcing shot of arctic air settling over the East in the days leading up to Inauguration Day."

The federal government will spend millions more taxpayer dollars to move thousands of employees out of aging buildings and into new ones than if the move had been planned better, says a local real estate consultant.

Darren Fleming, a senior adviser with GVA Devencore, a company that provides real estate advice and brokerage services, said the situation will create an artificially high demand for office space and contractors.

"If there's only three or four sites for new office towers in town and you ask for all of them at once, you're not going to get the best price," said Fleming.

More than a quarter of the government leases in Ottawa-Gatineau will expire within the next two years.

In December, the government put out a request for three office towers of 350,000 square feet each and a 2.8 million square-foot campus.

Fleming said the total is equivalent to almost all the office space in Kanata or Nepean.
