Via The Torch, news that the University of Guelph is planning to honour a "war criminal";

The U of G will present the prestigious Lincoln Alexander Outstanding Leader Award to Rick Hillier, the retired Canadian general best known for his big mouth and ties to torture...

They have a poll up. You know what to do!

David Akin also has a few choice words for them.

Update - Jan 11, 2009 - "The editorial written by Scott Gilbert and posted on The Cannon Friday, January 9 has been removed while The Cannon operating committee investigates its appropriateness."

They have a new poll up, and this one's even better!

Bunch of pansies.

Of course, by the poles number already, most like Hillier's Rambo approach to terrorism. He has my vote!!!

Eleven years ago this month the great ice storm of '98 rained down on us here in Eastern Ontario....the Canadian Armed Forces lead by this fine fine man came to help and restore order to the chaos happening around us. He is truly one of the best!

Another journalist that has learned his craft well. Is there no end to these idiots?

Hey Ulianov:

Winston Churchill was also an outstanding communicator. So was FDR, Maggie Thatcher, Ronald Regan, etc.

So what's your point?????

I'm sure these are some neo-marxsists that banned the Pro-Life group on campus.

http://canadaconservative.blogspot.com/search?q=university+of+guelph

Just another PO'd commie that somebody is standing up and helping to kill his buddies. Maybe they will go back to "Ban the Bomb" once Putin the Nutcase has restored communism again.Hillier has my vote!

One thing that continues to bother me is the notion that Canada is a peace keeping country. For at least 4 generations in our family, the history has been fighting for peace. This means willing to kill or be killed. Somebody has to stop teaching our children white washed history when the really history is amazing.

You might have to go to the site from google. I noticed they have blocked the poll from SDA & the Tourch links. At least on my system.
I do so love being a monkey wrench in the socialist machine of defamation.

I've just gone to the site and am unable to cast a vote because part of the picture of Rick Hillier is over the YES and NO domains. I tried to ignore the picture and clicked over the spot where my choice would be, but no go.

These idiots have no shame. (What's THAT?)

Just enter thecannon.ca in your nav bar.

What a complete and useless bunch of vipers!

U of G wouldn't know a war criminal until until the latter sent an RPG up their collective backsides.

Strange I don't recall Rick Hillier ever donning double lightning bolts on his lapels.

They are a little late to don Hillier in gear for the Valkyrie film with Tom Cruise.

Last time I checked the Criminal Code the CF were exempt in the performance of their duties.

Criminal Code
PART I
General

Canadian Forces not affected

5. Nothing in this Act affects any law relating to the government of the Canadian Forces.

R.S., c. C-34, s. 4.

And the Constitution Act 91(7) states:

7. Militia, Military and Naval Service, and Defence.

Whaddya know, Canada is allowed to defend itself?

National Defence Act, R.S.C. 1985, c. N-5

National Defence Act
PART III: CODE OF SERVICE DISCIPLINE
DIVISION 1: DISCIPLINARY JURISDICTION OF THE CANADIAN FORCES
Application

Continuing liability

(2) Every person subject to the Code of Service Discipline under subsection (1) at the time of the alleged commission by the person of a service offence continues to be liable to be charged, dealt with and tried in respect of that offence under the Code of Service Discipline notwithstanding that the person may have, since the commission of that offence, ceased to be a person described in subsection (1).

Seeing that Rick Hillier hasn't been indicted for War Crimes maybe he should sue the pants off the idiots making the ridiculous allegation.

Yep, you can see the pile of bodies that Rick Hillier is responsible for that went beyond his duties as Chief of Staff.

Makes for great black farce. They should be laughed off the podium and introduced to the "CANNONS OF INTERPRETATION"! I'm sure a few guys riding around in the Leopard 2A6M would be happy to oblige them.

But thanks for those 'explosive allegations'.

Cheers

I am sick and tired of hearing the "but we are peacekeepers" crap. Peacekeeping is something that soldiers have been doing since the beginning of time. A more appropriate term for the Pearsonian peacekeeping that the left has tried to convince everyone is out military's main role would be truce supervision. The Romans were great peacekeepers. They kept the peace by killing anyone who stepped out of line.

Its been a long time and I don't remember the details anymore, but I wrote a paper at staff school in which I stated that peace keeping was a total waste of time. I did this by looking at the history of all the places that Canadian soldiers have served as peace keepers and comparing the before and after local politics and concluding that all our efforts were at best pointless and at worst counterproductive. Of course this opinion wasn't that popular twenty years ago, but I got a good mark anyway.

I tried again and, le voila, the question and choices were in an easy to access sidebar. I voted YES. Another poll gione horribly wrong: YES: 91%; NO: 7%.

The truly frightening thing is that the low-lifes who penned this garbage may end up as members of the media where they can continue to spew their excrement. This makes them all front-line candidates for jobs at the CBC.

"John McCrae
John McCrae known for his poem, “In Flander's Fields”, was born in Guelph, Ontario, on January 28, 1872."

"In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders Fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders Fields.

- John McCrae"

Wow you really should read the comments on his bile spewing piece. I don't think he's made to many friends at this institution.

every time i go to the site it crashes out my explorer.

That last verse of "In Flanders Fields" often gets ignored by today's peace-at-any-pricers.

I wish we could send the author and his camp followers to the tender loving care of the real war criminals hiding in caves with Ben laden and lobbing rockets into Israel from Hamas held Lebanon. I am very proud of Rick Hillier and I am very glad to hear that he is being given this award. WWI soldiers would be proud that men like Rick Hillier carry the torch that the dead at Flanders Fields passed to future generations.

Consolation is, little Scotty over there got a good spanking in the comments.

91% in favor at "The Cannon"
ha!

Rick Hillier was 'da man'. Along with guys like Lew MacKenzie. So far the polw results seem to look quite nice!

The Torch can be carried in many ways. There is no glory in the slaughter; the likes of what took place at Flanders.

Do you know the history of what was going on around McCrae immediately before he wrote the poem? One of the things that strikes me most when I hear or read this poem is the thought of our Country having lost such a person such as he, to a needless and brutal war.

Yeah,I do happen to have an excellent idea of what was going on,huggies.Your last sentence shows you don't. Again, the "peace" process after WWI only led to one thing,WWII.Well.Actually 2,Chamberlain and WWII.
If such fine, brave, and heroic men like McCrae had not been "lost" in those 2 conflicts,or even the first, you would be speaking in low German right know.BTW. Do you know what branch of the service McCrae was in (without Google/wiki)?

"Eleven years ago this month the great ice storm of '98 rained down on us here in Eastern Ontario"

Was it that long ago already? I was living in downtown Montreal at the time and welcomed the troops. Their vehicles could bash through anything and their presence seemed to stabilize things (although I don't remember any chaos).

'Any other way I can vote on the poll? When I open the link, there's a photo of Rick Hillier covering Yes, No, and Undecided, so there's no way to vote. I see this has happened to a whole lot of others.

I'll try to Google the publication and see what happens. All Left/Wrong all of the time. What absolute a**holes. Sorry for the language, but I'm extremely pi**ed o**.

been around the block

Aizlynne is feeding trolls.

So, it looks like you can't vote at the poll by Googling thecannon.ca. Figures. Why let the truth get in the way of the story? Scott Gilbert's an MSM maggot on his way to becoming a full-blown lib-left news spinner. He'd do the CBC or CTV proud.

Chris should be given a front row seat for the awards presentation.

...and a muzzle.

I enlarged the site and was able to see the poll and vote for H.

Geez, the reference/comparison to Paul Bernardo was particularly distasteful.

Voted at 10.20 - no problem encountered.

Yeah,I do happen to have an excellent idea of what was going on,huggies

Ok then Tower, (Posted by: tower at January 10, 2009 9:00 PM), tell everyone what that was.

Hmmm, gellen. I still can't vote. And, MaryT, thanks for the tip, but I have no idea how to enlarge the site. I tried clicking on "View" and going to largest text size, but no go!

At least the poll is going 91% in favour of General Hillier's receiving the award to 7% who aren't in favour.

Sanity prevails. Whew.

I used: view>zoom out, and the radio buttons came into view. Then I selected yes>submit. Worked for me. (Firefox 3.0)

batb, I've just Googled thecannon.ca. I clicked on the first entry and arrived at the site. The side bar with the YES/NO is right there. (I even voted again: it wasn't disallowed.)

The result is now 97% in Hillier's favour. Yeah!

What morons these student "leaders" appear to be.

I think this so-called "editorial" was part of an initiation rite for joining the leadership of CUPE Ontario.

Credit where it's due: even one of the MSM had his stomach turned by the incident - check out what David Akin had to say about it:

I have never, in more than 25 years as a professional journalist ever written a letter to the editor complaining about somone's coverage or asking for someone to censor themselves but I did so today. I believe that speech must be free and should have as few limits as possible, even if that speech is occasionally hurtful. But this morning's piece, its placement, and its prominence was beyond the pale so here's what I wrote...

He's a Guelph alumnus, too. And worked on the student newspaper when he was there. So his anger is palpable in what he's written.

Good on him.

The editorial about Hillier is now gone, while its appropriateness is being "reconsidered".

Meantime, we have a poll on whether we support Israel's current invasion of "palestine" (quotes added by me).

Let's get voting!!

Lori, Looks like another poll gone horribly wrong. LOL!

Somebody get a screen shot quickly; Israel is at 94% and Hillier at 98%. I don't like either result's chances of surviving the Cannon's Monday editorial meeting.

Sorry, 92% for Hillier.

So far, the Yes's have 93% of the vote.

I'm just getting back to the thread, but to answer hugger's question, John McCrae had just lost one of his closest friends to the war, this after caring for the dead and dying of countless others--horror piled on top of horror. My grandfather was a stretcher bearer in that war, and he didn't talk about it much. I don't claim to know exactly what was in Doctor McCrae's mind, but when I read that verse, I take it literally. I'm not out for anyone's blood, and neither was my grandfather, but you have to take a stand sometime, and that sounds naive in today's sophisticated world, I don't care. People were so traumatized by the carnage of World War I, they couldn't bring themselves to defend themselves against Hitler until it was almost too late.

Ah, the folly of youthful stupidity! Though Canada and Canadians are avid participants in the cyberworld, too few realize that there are a lot of Santas out there, making lists and checking them twice, and then again (and again and again).

Scott Gilbert - the name has been noted by at least four headhunters from three different commercial concerns with whom I enjoyed a couple of drinkies last weekend. Companies pay a LOT of money to ensure that weird ideological nutbunnies are KEPT OUT of their corporate environments. And with good reason!

Even genuinely stupid people eventually "connect the dots". These days, it's smart to remember that cyber-dots, like cyber-crime, are very real. Individual persons CAN and DO leave "footprints" in the cyberworld (and I'm not talking about being pursued by a Canadian human rights commission here). Some people are actually PAID to identify, name and report in order to "screen out" FOREVER ideological nutbunnies like Scott Gilbert.

See how EASY it is to identify and label actual persons/citizens who would sell out their own mothers for a pat on the back from "somebody important" from their ideological camp?

Ideological nutbunny = SCOTT GILBERT
Ideological nutbunny = SCOTT GILBERT
Ideological nutbunny = SCOTT GILBERT
Ideological nutbunny = SCOTT GILBERT
Ideological nutbunny = SCOTT GILBERT
Ideological nutbunny = SCOTT GILBERT
Ideological nutbunny = SCOTT GILBERT
Ideological nutbunny = SCOTT GILBERT

Remember the name.

NOTE TO SELF: Never hore ANYBODY called Scott Gilbert.
