Damn right. Our soldiers are the pointy end of a weapon we've almost forgotten how to use, the right to self-preservation. Islam was and still is a dark cloud of repression that will not acknowledge our right to exist. It must be opposed and these brave soldiers are there to do it for us.

Quite true – but the best way to bring “Ted” or “real” out of the closet for a night’s laugh is to use words like “negro”, “fag”, or “homosexual”, they go absolutely berserk! Then once they’ve made complete asses of themselves because they can’t hold a debate competing with logic and facts they end it with hissy fit’s and supposed insults like racists, bigots, knuckle dragging rednecks as if on this planet those words have any validity anymore from people like them. The simple solution to Afghanistan is to pull our troops out, and close our borders. Deport all the illegal immigrants now living in Canada and all those who proclaim to support the Taliban along with all the other Islamic militant groups around the world.

An old boss of mine(deceased) told me a funny story a couple of years ago. He arrived in North Africa at age 17, and rode a tank all the way to Germany. He got himself a Luger as a souvenir. He played sick for roll call one day, so he could clean it. It accidentally went off, and the bullet went right through the front of his thigh muscle. He never told anyone, and limped a bit for a week or two. I think he was pretty lucky not to get an infection.

I wish we old men could go do the fighting and let these young guys live to see all we've seen. I'd go tomorrow if I was fit enough, and my sons never have to go. How long do you think the mission would last if no one under 30 was allowed to see combat?

While speaking about “diversity” it sure does seem to stop short of the fighting men & women of the Canadian Armed Forces in Afghanistan doesn’t it? It certainly doesn’t reflect the diversity the MSM pumps into our homes on a daily basis.

Did anyone catch the footage of Peter MacKay’s address to the troops in Afghanistan or of the brave Canadian soldier Michael Freeman who died and was returned home on Saturday?

It’s funny that the disproportionate amount of patriotism doesn’t seem to bring out the multicultural crowd looking for equal opportunities and ethnic bigotry, No?

Knight- I took my sons to a number of war memorials in Nova Scotia last summer. We actually took the time to read the names, hundreds of them. Not one "mohammed" to be found. For all the Irish jokes people throw at me, there sure are a lot of Irish names on war memorials.

In a few years, Americans might notice how many hispanic names there are on their memorials. They make a lot of noise about illegal Mexican immigrants, but they could do a lot worse. I'd trade our brand of immigrants for a bunch of Mexicans any day.

The fact that Statistics Canada proclaims that almost 20% of Canadians are visible minorities or soon will be, shouldn’t the names and faces of 100 of our dead hero’s reflect that national demographic?

Here in Montreal a lot of the cadets are from immigrant groups. So eventually they may get into the services and change the face of the military. Also they speak a lot of different languages which will help us.

Just a quick comment on that Nicola, the vast majority of military recruits have no cadet experiece. I get the impression that very few cadets actually go on the join the military.

As for the number of minorites in the military, I don't really want to hazard a guess, but if I had to I'd say they aren't there in representative numbers. I do know that females certainly aren't representative in numbers....take that for what its worth.

Of course if one were to speak from a military perspective, forgetting any sociatal considerations, one would be quite happy with the current makeup of the military. Why? Because you only want people who want to be there. Why? Because they are the most committed to accomplishing the mission, and the mission comes first.

As a soldier I can attest to Junker's assertion that few soldiers have cadet experience. Some do, I am one, but the vast majority do not.

As for the forces being reflective of the demographics of the nation, I say who cares. There is a lot of PC-talk about how a fighting force must reflect the demographics of the nation, but I call bull-shit.

In my mind, the only legitimate concern of a recruiter is an effective fighting force, particularly in time of war. This means that only those who are capable and willing need apply, and if that means only white males, then so be it.

Of course, widening the pool of potential recruits is a good thing, but ultimately, the decision to hire must be based upon merit, not some quota. This isn't some pencil-pushing office job. Ineffective people are a danger to themselves and others in combat. We're not talking merely the loss of a few dollars on the bottom line or a lower productivity score, people die.

It's too bad Canada doesn't have a policy that any immigrant who fights in Canada's war(s)can receive instant citizenship after their service (in the combat arms) is over. Since it takes a year or two to get trained up and depending on the deployment cycle the person could be in the military almost three years before serving their six month tour. By the way, they'd also have to live in the Canadian military milieu...that would be the quickest way of indoctrinating potential citizens into the Canadian way of life.
Further to that, it is unfortunate that becoming a citizen of Canada is so easy today.
I speak as both a soldier who has been overseas (Bosnia and Afghanistan) and as a former immigrant who came to Canada 34 yrs ago as an eight yr old child.

French language proficiency DOES count towards promotions, but so does English proficiency for our Francophone brothers. The reason those standards exist is to encourage every military member to become bilingual. It's not a quota of any kind.

What should be apparent to the minimally cognisant is the following: the underlying loyalties of immigrant populations are a cause for concern. Ask yourself this: how many really pious and observant Muslims in the Armed Forces consider themselves Canadians first and Muslims second? The answer to that question I'd find most interesting.
