Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your delectation and pursuant to our Sunday night classical music show, here are the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, in their 2007 Silvesterkonzert (New Year's Eve concert), performing Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition (26:33) and Part 2 (12:30), Sir Simon Rattle conducting.

It is interesting, perhaps, to compare Part 2 of this production to the Baba Yaga's Hut and The Great Gate of Kiev pieces by the University of Lucerne Symphony Orchestra and the Gdansk Music Academy Strings, which we previously featured here at SDA LNR.

Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

I've meant to tell you for a while Vit how I enjoy your input. You have a wide variety of tidbits and information and frankly I wonder how you keep up the pace. I also go to your site from time to time to see what's new and review the other features. A veritable cornucopia. Nice work.

Iran's role in the current conflict: Interesting video here. Note: If you don't know who John Batchelor is and the wealth of knowledge he brings to the table then I can explain.

Thank you so much, Vitruvius, for the fine Russian playlist tonight: IMO, it's preferable to the BBC 3 program I was listening to. (I'm afraid I've just figured out how to listen and do other things at the same time.)

The picture of Simon Rattle "rattled" me a bit: my husband and I saw him conduct a Proms concert at the Royal Albert Hall in 1978. His hair was very curly and very dark; it's now quite curly and quite white: the very same thing seems to have happened to my quite dark hair! (And 1978 seems not so long ago . . .)

You're welcome, Ghost and Lookout. I have not mastered, Lookout, how to listen and do other things at the same time, perhaps I never will due to aspergian considerations. Yet it remains the case that I find that there are a number of classical big-orchestra Russian compositions that include something that the European tradition does not, namely: that big bass drum (and I'm fully willing to admit this may be due simply to my lack of exposure to the latter, for which I request corrections as appropriate). Meanwhile, I will likely continue to feature, from time to time, wherever found, big-orchestra pieces with that big bass drum.

Doesn't Joseph Lenin and the Video Professor's best comrade, Dr. Dawg, live in Ottawa?

Somebody from Ottawa came onto my blog earlier this evening and searched first for "Dawg" and then for "Baglow", as in John Baglow aka Dr. Dawg.

Sadly for Canada's #1 Anti-Semite, he didn't find any entries. Might his life revolve around posting hateful things and then seeing who calls him on it? I sense an upcoming article in Psychology Today about ol' Doc.

Sounds downright CHRC-ish, Robert.

I'm listening to Part 2 again: great stuff. And I have no objections at all to more big bass drums!

I hear you re listening and doing other things: maybe my listening isn't as focused as it should be . . . ;-)

Shall we close our eyes and dance, Lookout (blush ;-)

Who knows, Matt, who knows. But I have Ezra Levant & Mark Steyn's e-mail addresses at the read should that ever happen!

Here's an interesting article from the NY Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/29/business/economy/29labor.html?ref=business

It explains that unions in the U.S. are looking for a new life under Obama. You bet they are! They want to turn the entire U.S. economy into the sickness that is Michigan.

Why not?! (It might keep me awake;-)

Why, thank you ma'am, you're too kind.
And that's the last I have to say on the
matter, per the "chat room" rule ;-)

One of the best decisions I ever made was asking Vit to take this job on!

Another poll going horribly "wrong"...

"Where do you stand on Israel's response to rocket attacks on its territory?"

http://www.cnn.com/

Alchemist. The only problem with that poll is there are only 2 responses.Where's the More,Harder, and Faster???

Sounds very dawg like Robert. Probably hoping for more traffic, since the only time it goes up is probably when someone like Kate and Kathy link to him.

I clicked the link yesterday without glancing at the URL first. /Shakes fist at Kate. ;)

MSM will not/cannot admit it was defeated by George Bush.

This is the closest the MSM will ever get to admitting George Bush won in Iraq:
"Of course, the Iraq war has evolved and violence in the country has subsided."

"TV News Winds Down Operations on Iraq War(MSM ADMITS VICTORY)
NYTimes ^ | December 28, 2008 | BRIAN STELTER

"Joseph Angotti, a former vice president of NBC News, said he could not recall any other time when all three major broadcast networks lacked correspondents in an active war zone that involved United States forces."

"Of course, the Iraq war has evolved and violence in the country has subsided."

"But representatives for the networks emphasized that they would continue to cover the war and said the staff adjustments reflected the evolution of the conflict in Iraq from a story primarily about violence to one about reconstruction and politics."

STOPIGGY wears/embraces his albatross:
The Separatist Coalition.
Meanwhile* ...-

"Liberals Wait to see Federal Budget

Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff insists the Liberal-NDP coalition is still a viable alternative for Canadians.

Ignatieff told CTV's "Question Period" he has told NDP Leader Jack Layton and Bloc Quebecois leader Gilles Duceppe the coalition agreement still stands." (cfra)

*Meanwhile: The MSM loses its battle to debauch/discourage Canadians.

"Canadians Optimistic About 09

Canadians are looking ahead with positive thoughts to the new year.

A new poll suggests a majority of Canadians remain optimistic about 2009." (cfra)

So, Ignatieff, touted as having a great mind, is capable of running the affairs of state after two years as an Opposition MP? Never mind the little detail he hasn't lived here for much of his life.

These facts alone bring to question his judgment.
He's showing the utmost in arrogance when he claims the coalition is still an option. This tells us the coalition is all about power grabbing, a venue to complete his fast track to power. No consideration of the people's choice to govern.

Looking forward to media coverage when he goes forth among the rubes to "smell the barns" as he has promised.

Perusing the headlines this morn,3 tiny thoughts occur:

1.The Lie-onization of Ignauseous is gathering steam thanks to the staunch defenders of democracy in our unbiased media.

2.The latest Israel thing showcases that unbiased media in all it's glory.

3. I was sorry to hear Rod Bruinooge suffered a head injury over the holidays. Apparently he has joined many of our friends in the unbiased media in their quest for a speedy return to brown bag government.

The BBC had a news report about the melamine trials in China. It claimed that the scandal 'broke' in September (meaning 08). Using April 2007's posting by SDA on the topic, I demonstrated in a post that the MSM once again was scooped by bloggers. This time by a scant SEVENTEEN MONTHS!

(Via SWJ; NYT warning) Richard A. Oppel, Jr., and Pir Zubair Shah, Taliban Hit Pakistan Town That Fought Back

Four months ago, the people of the Pakistani mountain village of Shalbandi gained national repute after a village posse hunted down and killed six Taliban fighters who had tied up and killed eight local policemen. The posse displayed the Taliban corpses like trophies for other residents to see, and the village was celebrated as a courageous sign that the Taliban could be repelled.

On Sunday morning, the Taliban struck back...

Sally Adee, Researchers Hope to Mime 1000 Neurons With High-Res Artificial Retina

Researchers from three major California universities are working on an artificial retina that could give limited sight to people with degenerative diseases of the retina, such as macular degeneration. Such a prosthesis is a more realistic future treatment than stem-cell therapy, gene therapy, or eye transplants, its developers say. The Californian researchers have been treating people using a 60-pixel retina in a clinical trial for two years. But they are now gunning for a system with a resolution of 1000 pixels, they reported.... And in contrast with systems in trials today, the researchers hope to develop a system that would be completely sealed into the eye, without any external components...

I'd guess that Ignatieff can't, rhetorically, reject The Coalition, because then he'd have to explain why he signed it in the first place. I think he's hoping that it will all wither and die and turn into dust under the living room couch.

Plus, Layton won't let him forget that Coalition and Layton would make a big smoke about Ignatieff's 'unreliability' if Ignatieff were to renounce the Coalition right now. Layton's agenda remains to grind the Liberals into nothing.

But Ignatieff certainly wouldn't want to govern in partnership with Layton. At the moment, Ignatieff is after seats in Quebec. And, he'll try for more seats in Ontario, appealing to the left desire for a Sovereign style of governance - which is found in the left areas in Ontario and Quebec.

Serious allegation re Lynch:
"Lynch is breaking the law."

"How long will Lynch be permitted to abuse the law? In other words, who'll strike her down first -- Canada's Supreme Court, or Canada's Parliament?"
...-

"Jennifer Lynch, jet-setting lawbreaker

I was thinking some more about Jennifer Lynch's three-year war against the conservative website, Free Dominion, and I was shaking my head at her un-Canadian values of censorship and procedural bullying. She's clearly learning from her dictator friends about how to squelch political dissent using the Orwellian cover of "human rights". What an appalling woman -- and what an embarrassment to the Conservatives who appointed her.

I read Mark Steyn's views on Lynch's attempt to cleanse the Internet of conservative voices, and I thought: this isn't just a political scandal. It's a legal scandal. Lynch is breaking the law."

Ah, the perks of media affection. On Christmas Day, the Washington Post delivered a front-page paean to Barack Obama’s workout habits. The 1,233-word ode to O’s physical fitness read more like a Harlequin romance novel than an A-1 news article.

Germany: Putin's main squeeze.

Edward Lucas, Bearhugged by Uncle Vlad

Germany's relationship with Vladimir Putin's Russia is the most puzzling and troubling feature of modern European politics. Not only is Germany Russia's biggest trading partner, it is also her biggest ally. It is Germany that has derailed Nato expansion. Germany reversed the EU's initially tough line on Russia after the invasion of Georgia. Germany prevents the Council of Europe scrutinising Russia's flawed elections. Germany forces the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development to channel money to companies run by Kremlin cronies. Germany keeps Europe's energy market rigged in favour of Russian gas imports...

After reading the Globe and Mail article today where one Joyce Authur, pro choice activists attempts to tell me what I think, I did a bit of searching about her. For an interesting read, check out her July 2, 2007 Blog post on a CBC contest gone horribly wrong. Then check out her confirmation of CBC as a "liberal bastion" and giving them kudos for "deep sixing" the results.

Kate; it might be fun to bring the CBC's "deep sixing" things to the forefront again. Just for sh*ts and giggles, of course!!

Hamas Legalizes Crucifixion...

...Both Iran and its Hamas proxy in Gaza have been busy this Christmas week showing Christendom just what they think of it. But no one seemed to have noticed.

On Tuesday Hamas legislators marked the Christmas season by passing a Sharia criminal code for the Palestinian Authority. Among other things, the code legalizes crucifixion.

Hamas's endorsement of nailing enemies of Islam to crosses came at the same time as it renewed its jihad...

Read it here

Cbc's coverage of the situation in Gaza is revolting. They now have an 'expert'explaining how the media spins the story in Israel's favour. The main point that is not being mentioned and probably won't be, is that Hamas had a choice between providing for the people or killing Jews. True to their religious beliefs, killing Jews is always the first choice.

"A Case Study Showing Mainstream Media Is Worse Than You Think

By Herb Denenberg, The Bulletin

The mainstream media has actually accelerated its slobbering over its Messiah, “The One,” Barack Obama. I thought it couldn’t get worse (I always think that and I’m always surprised when it always gets worse), but take a look at Newsweek, the weekly newsmagazine for Jan. 5, 2009. As you know, Newsweek is beginning to look like Oprah’s magazine. She runs a picture of Oprah on every cover. It seems Newsweek is running a picture of Mr. Obama on every cover.

Can it get worse than that? On the Jan. 5 issue titled “The Global Elite” the cover has a picture of Obama right in the middle of all kinds of print and graphics. Turn one page and you’ll find a full-page picture of Mr. Obama greeting wildly enthusiastic crowds. The caption in the lower-right corner says “The One: Obamamania on the Campaign Trail.” Turn another page and there’s still another full-page picture of Mr. Obama waving to the crowd, over a heading of “The World’s Most Powerful People.”

How can Newsweek demonstrate its Obamania more effectively?"

Not so, Garrity.

Iggy is caught in two leghold traps in the Separatist Coalition; one sprung by Taliban Jack Layton (NDP; the other sprung by communist Duceppe.
Iggy only has two legs; can Iggy rise like Gulliver above the 2 midgets and pi** on them?

Will Iggy morph into Mr. DithersII, a la PMartin, Jr.?

Will Iggy rescue the Liberal Party of PET from oblivion?

Iggy is the third Liberal leader since Jeancula Chretien. Hold that match; the Sniper is waiting.

I posted this the other day, but it's worth noting again:

"On Tuesday, Hamas legislators marked the Christmas season by passing a Shari’a criminal code for the Palestinian Authority. Among other things, itlegalizes crucifixion."

Hamas’s endorsement of nailing enemies of Islam to crosses came at the same time it renewed its jihad.

Here, too, Hamas wanted to make sure that Christians didn't feel neglected as its fighters launched missiles at Jewish day care centers and schools. So on Wednesday, Hamas lobbed a mortar shell at the Erez crossing point into Israel just as a group of Gazan Christians were standing in line waiting to travel to Bethlehem for Christmas.

But where on earth did the poor, bereaved Palestinians get the crucifixion idea? Could it be the ideology, supported by the uncreated and unmitigated word of Allah?

5:33 "Those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive to spread corruption in the land should be punished by death, crucifixion, the amputation of an alternate hand and foot or banishment from the land: a disgrace for them in this world, and then a terrible punishment in the Hereafter."

Monsters, all.

'Love' is un-Islamic. Duh, no kidding. Well, so are jeans.

'Wearing jeans un-Islamic'
(Deccanherald.com

After terming love as “un-Islamic”, the Darul Uloom Islamic seminary in Deoband has said that Muslilms wearing jeans is a gunah (sin).

The seminary recently issued a fatwa (religious decree) against the wearing of jeans and transplanting and dyeing of hair in black.

These fatwas have been issued in response to three different queries, according to the Darul Uloom's Darul Ifta (department of fatwa). In response to a query on wearing of jeans by women, especially in cold countries in Western Europe, the seminary has made it clear that “jeans pants and shirts are against the shariat (Islamic rules)”. “The physical structure (curves) of the body is reflected if one puts on a jeans. Wearing them by a woman is a sin”, the fatwa said adding that it should not be put on by the menfolk also. “It is barred for men as well. Women, who want to look as men, are cursed”, the fatwa went on to say.
