What a lot of people don't realize is not only are the Chinese some of the most racist and xenophobic people on the face of the planet, but they also take self-loathing to heights that white liberals could only dream of.

Addendum: I guess that's where the "mean spirited thoroughness" comes in. After all, why do things by halves?

PS: I live in Vancouver so I know of that which I speak.

Try reading the link more carefully.

So far, I am pretty offended by the first two comments...then Kate reins you in? Read the link!

Thanks..xoxo

Was the NYT trying to say that the Chinese diligence and frugality wasn't offensive to the Republican voter or just that all Democrats were hoodlums. Well at least on the later front nothing has changed as shown by President Elect (change) Owe.

A number of years ago in Vancouver, a co-worker from Hong Kong and I were reviewing a quote from a vendor . It was needlessly complex about pricing break-points and order dates and order quantities for each discount level.

The co-worker said "They must have a Jew in the back room". The "or a Chinaman" reply changed the subject nicely and seemed to get the point across without him being offended.

Ed: Everyone in the world is racist with the recent exception of most of Western society. I also live in Vancouver and I cannot disagree more strongly with your view of the local Chinese people. You make no sense at all.

Wow, it would be nice to start my day with a satirical article or two in my chump housemate's NYT. Too bad liberals can't do satire. Neither can perpetually annoyed conservatives, so who am I to talk.

Trolling for trolls with this post? This should be good.

BTW Kate
Thanks for all the Y2Kyoto posts in the last year.

And a belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Sheesh.Imagine Ed. A people who way back then actually washed daily and wore clean clothes!!! As I've said before, own and work(yeah, some [most?] small business owners do work) in an oilfield machine shop where I am the token white amongst the "Chinese hordes".When you can show me ONE white,or otherwise, machinist, who can MANUALLY machine down to 0.0005 of an inch 99 out of 100 times, send him over. Most whites(read leftards) despise Chinese because they are meticulous, have a superiour work ethic, respect their elders, and all they ask of in return is a fair shake. Guess that doesn't fit the socialist victim scheme of things!

Oh. And BTW. Four of my machinists make more then I pay myself as owner. Why? Because they PRODUCE and bring in the profit, and that is their fair shake reward.

If medical science ever comes up with a cure for tone-deafness, perhaps Kate could host an online fundraiser for Edward and for all who suffer from this debilitating ailment.

Keep hope alive.

Yup, pretty much a gracious and appreciative experience in our lives too. I tend to comment here and be very inexperienced and emotional but count me into the "prove the facts" crowd tonight!
Bring it on!

And Bec. In my experience, you will not find a more family oriented, and loyal employee. When I had to take a week off because my wife was in the hospital, I had zero qualms turning the keys over to the day shift foreman. I KNEW he would be there at 5:45 Am opening up. And I KNEW the night forewoman would be there at 5 PM to take over and close up shop at 2.And yet they still found time to visit at the hospital, and even worked on Saturday to help keep things flowing!BTW. Hospitals get really upset when visitors show up at 5 with REAL Chinese food for the "boss" and his wife...heh.Wouldn't trade them for a hundred of the other so called workers I've hired out there.

I wasn't able to access the NYT site (without creating an account).

It is very interesting to see the thoughts, comments, and prejudices from one hundred to two hundred years ago.

A long time ago I read this book called "Paddy and the Republic: Ethnicity and Nationalism in Antebellum America". Most people associate Irish immigration to the US with the famine. Mass Irish immigration actually started much earlier because the US basically followed the British model of bringing in Irish labour to build out infrastructure (bridges, canals, roads, railroads, etc.) around 1820. Many Irish were allowed to stay in the US. (An interesting example is the first bridge across the Cumberland to help build out Nashville. 20K Irish guys were brought in to build the bridge and surrounding infrastructure - the bridge was actually made of wood - after the build out, about 5K Irish were allowed to stay while the rest pushed towards Memphis and the Mississippi. These guys, being Irish guys would always try to build a church at the highest point in a town. Tennessee wanted to build a new state capital on this high point - but they were not able to confiscate the land. They negotiated with the Irish and agreed to build a solid stone Catholic Church near the hill - which is now the oldest church in Nashville - and they build a pretty good looking Capital building on the hill.)

The book catalogues most of the newspaper and supposedly scholarly articles at that time. The caricatures, cartoons and editorials are unbelievable - Irish guys always looked like apes, with bottles of whiskey on them and constantly in drunken brawls, with an inability to communicate or even think - stupid papists, etc. There were scientists that would show the difference between an Irish brain and a 'normal' brain. They had doctors who would - get this - feel bumps on peoples heads - and declare that statistically Irish guys had more bumps on their heads and this indicated sub-human qualities - they are only capable of the lowliest forms of labour.

As the US pushed west towards the Rockies, Entrepreneurs from San Fran were pushing east and bringing in mass Chinese labour to build out infrastructure on the west coast. When Irish labour ran into Chinese labour - the Irish realized something - they were treated much better than Chinese labour - they were no longer the low man on the totem pole. Some Irish guys even used this to their advantage (which is uncool considering that they were the low man not that long before).

My guess is that it will not be too long until Canada has a Chinese PM and the US has a Chinese President - and they will be good. We've come along way in the last 100 years or so. There is still a lot of racism around but I don't think you can use hokey pseudo-scientific reasons to justify racism any more.

You know, as with anything else, it depends.

Some groups of Chinese are go-getters. Others get a job with Hydro One, are go-getters until they get into the union, and then slow down even more than everyone else.

Like I say, it all depends.

work hard, yuppers

now if someone would just teach them how to drive:-))))

sure was a biting satire of the white establishment of the day.

Guys, it's called satire. You know, sarcasm. Read. The. Piece. More. Care. Full. Lee.

Wait a minute,,who does he think he's calling hoodlums?

my chinese auntie(ni-mah)is nearly 90 years old now.....and it still is only the work of a moment to wind her up about the British stuffing opium down their throats back in the "olden times"...btw she was the first chinese graduate in nursing at st joseph's in victoria...when the graduates were looking over the graduation ceremony dining room at the Empress they were told my auntie could serve dinner but she certainly wasn't going to sit and be served there.....that led to the first threat of a boycott which was the beginning of the end for the establishment 'colour bar' in Victoria...

"Lee"

Snort. Good one.

I've often thought of writing a piece extolling the unfair labor practices on the set of Ponderosa and Bonanza, signing it "Hop Sing" and seeing if anyone other than George Takei makes the connection.

Kirk out.

The first comments posted certainly underscore the dearth of present-day education concerning the finer points of reading-for-comprehension. That makes one fret when pondering the future when many of those in the present can not take the time necessary to understand and appreciate the past.

Satire is a wonderful thing, but it does require a reasonable effort to savor correctly.

Kathy, you know the flying monkeys don't know
what to say until they are explicitly told what to say.
But isn't it interesting what they reveal
when it isn't spelled out for them?

and it requires that I be able to down load said satire:-)))))

Nice Swiftonian touch that.

Human nature shown for the irony it is. Go to libraries some time & look at the old ads on the papers. Its hilarious. Same cons only different language.

My 4 year old granddaughter is in the other room, watching Retro cartoons on satellite, from back in the day when violence and mild racism was most of the plot line.

There is a backlash starting against the leninist PC anti- capitalism crowd. Over the last year I've been working with a bunch of proto-teachers and some with degrees, doing the part-time gig to get a position. These are GenX'rs, and they keep telling stories about the looney, leftist, old teachers getting laughed at by the students and the young teachers. In a very few years, the schools won't be a breeding ground for socialism.

Whether we old geezers will be happy with the new views on free markets and government remains to be seen. I will say that they are the first generation in years that intuitively understand Keynes was wrong, and Friedman right.

When I, a 60 year old conservative, have to try to explain to a 20 something apprentice in Canada why he shouldn't quit his job and go campaigning for Ron Paul, there is hope for Canada.
