During the voyage across the Atlantic, many of the other victims would have died and been thrown overboard. Upon landing somewhere on the eastern seaboard, her ancestors were auctioned to the highest bidder. In the generations leading up to the Civil War, they were "owned" by masters who, in all likelihood, sexually abused the female ancestors and worked the males in brutal agricultural labour without pay. After "emancipation", they likely did the same work for almost no pay while facing discrimination and threats by the Ku Klux Klan, a situation that lasted almost a century.

btw, Chances are that oprah's ancestors were captured by other african tribes who, not realizing the Geneva convention wasn't written yet, decided to enslave prisoners of war instead of killing them outright. Slavery isn't a black/white thing and it still exists in the world today. I guess it will need explaining, but what makes this funny and worthy of a cartoon lampooning it is that Oprah made it a big issue. If she hadn't talked about it, I doubt it would have become a big issue. I don't watch her show all that often (because you know I work), but I had noticed that she gained some weight and it didn't bother me. Maybe she is a 200 pound woman and she needs to live with that rather that making us all focus on her eating patterns, her thyroid, her whatever. I guess if you are going to be in the public eye, your focus is going to be "me, me, me". But most people really don't care. So she opened the can of worms by drawing attention to it, and then blaming her glands for not being able to exercise. Oprah has money pouring out of every pour (and good for her, she earned it) - so she had lots of resources at hand to deal with it. Why she just didn't deal with it and lose the weight it beyond me, but no, she wanted to make it a learning experience for us poor slobs who need her guidance. So the cartoon is entirely appropriate way for us poor slobs to rspond.

Most likely they were attacked by other African tribes, who in times past generally regarded their captives as entrees until slaving them became a more profitable use for the captives.

The sad, but comical irony in all of this (as mentioned earlier) that more than anything else, Oprah built her billion dollar fortune by pontificating about and promoting all kinds of idiotic diets and exercise regimens. Almost always, these diets and exercise rituals originated from unqualified charlatans (a.k.a. trainers of celebrities/celebrity trainers &, diet 'gurus'), and were all about aesthetics rather than health.

In all of this, after developing the considerable personal wealth that is required to hire her own full time in-house cook and celebrity trainers (which the average-jane fan of hers could never afford), she still can't get it right. She built her empire on the sword of fad diets and she is now falling on it.
