Reader Tips

Ellis-Bextor

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your delectation and pursuant to our Saturday night contemporary music show and our last show before our 2008 SDA LNR Twelve Days of Christmas Extravaganza begins, here is Sophie Ellis-Bextor with Cristiano Spiller et al performing Groovejet on Top of the Pops in 2000 (3:30).

This tune sold over two million copies world-wide, was reportedly the first song played on an iPod, and, indeed, was one of my favourite dance songs in 2000. Ideally, you’re looking for about 100 dBa and 200 dBc for this one (which is only a few hundred watts of output-stage amplifier power and inches² of woofer in a small room, say 1000 ft³); my apologies to those stuck with toy computer amplifiers and speakers. On the other hand, I did write this Letter to the Editor, so you should probably take my opinion with a scruple of salt.

Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

  1. Loving the Groovejet, Vitruvius. Takes me back.
But what’s the story with a “scruple” of salt? Is that like a murder of crows, or a business of ferrets?

  2. Ah well, it’s pun, Exetaz. On the one hand, we have the image of Miss Ellis-Bextor available via picking the thumbnail above, which tends to provoke either ZZ Top’s “she’s got legs, and she knows how to use them”, or the classic Edwardian response: “Have you no scruples, Sir?”. On the other hand, from the Latin we have cum grano salis, literally “with a grain of salt”, which is commonly understood to mean: “with due skepticism”; furthermore, from the Apothecaries or Avoirdupois system of weights, we have that one scruple equals twenty grains. Now you may well say: twenty grains is a lot of salt, Vitruvius. What can I say, I’m a generous kind of guy. Just don’t spend it all in one place, ok ?-)

  3. I’m currently watching Ken Burns’ superb documentary on Thomas Jefferson. Here’s a quotation from him in 1802 that could very well be a rallying cry for all Canadians today:
“If we can prevent the government from wasting the labours of the people under the pretense of taking care of them, they must become happy.”

  4. Vitruvius ~ Thank you. I am enlightened.
Your mental processes are singular both in their range and specificity, and in the peculiar nature of their product;).

  5. Or in the vernacular, Exetaz: You really went to a hell of a lot of trouble
to construct such a diabolically obscure pun, didn’t you, Vitruvius.
What can I say? Yes I did. First I wrote grain of salt, then I thought, no, better dram maybe, so then I started doing some research, and when I discovered that one scruple equals twenty grains, well, as you can imagine, it was game over. Cum grano salis was purely an afterthought 😉

  6. Ever wonder whether residents of senior’s nursing homes watch what’s going on in politics.
I was volunteering at a function at one today and just eavesdropped a little.
LOTS of talk about their disgust with the Liberal/NDP coalition.
Here’s a priceless comment about Iggy from a REAL old farmer. ” That new Liberal axx hole said he understands us farmers because he visited a barn as a kid and he likes the smell of cow dung!! He must like the smell because he sure does shovel a lot of it!”
    Priceless.

  7. Interesting thoughts by Seth Godin, Rick. It does make one wonder why there can be so many computer hardware manufacturers around the world but so few car makers. “Economy of scale” will be cited as a reason but I wonder if such a talking point holds any water.
Marie, you hang out with some very wise people!

  8. David – thanks – fascinating article. I will stick by my guns that Obama is “too big to fail”. I feel that he will be a lame duck president, because of all the dirt that has been withheld however.

  10. I am wondering why in news reports on the giant Ponzi scheme by the former director of Nasdaq no one asks what the auditors/accountants were doing.
My husband works for Hydro Quebec in finance and they are being audited practically every month. In fact there are so many regulations now and audits that it is keeping him from getting his work done.

Sadly, there are pointy-haired bosses out there that feel this is training is needed. Dilbert, we feel your pain.

  13. Here’s a glowing report by Jane Taber on the new discipline within the Liberal Party. She writes that “the Liberal Party will now speak with one voice and it will be his (ed. Ignatieff’s voice), according to an insider.
He is making an effort at discipline, which many Grits appreciate after the confusion of the short-lived Dion reign.”
Now wait – did this same Taber and hosts of Liberal and NDPers, newspaper pundits and other babble, all scream at Harper for ‘speaking with one voice’? Did they constantly call Harper a bully, chastize him for ‘ruling his MPs’ and limited their ‘free speech’.
Didn’t they? Didn’t they call Harper a ‘control freak’? Didn’t they?

  14. Michael Evans, SAS to take on Taleban ‘decapitation’ mission after leaving Iraq
Two SAS squadrons are to switch from Iraq to Afghanistan next year to mount one of the biggest covert operations for decades against the Taleban leadership and opium smugglers, who help to fund insurgents.
They plan to mount a combined operation with the Special Boat Service (SBS), the Royal Marines’ equivalent of the Army’s elite regiment, which is leading covert missions in Helmand province in southern Afghanistan…

  15. “MAKE SHARIA PART OF UK LAW, SAYS QC”
    (Sunday Express)
SHARIA law will “inevitably” become part of the legal system and work should begin now to incorporate it into British law, a leading barrister said last night.
Stephen Hockman, QC, former chairman of the Bar Council, spoke at a meeting organised by the website Islam4UK, where another speaker was Anjem Choudary, former head of banned fanatical group al-Muhajiroun.
Sharia law has become associated with executions, stonings and hands being cut off.
But Mr Hockman told the Daily Express: “Given our substantial Muslim population, it is vital that we look at ways to integrate Muslim culture into our traditions.
“Otherwise we will find that there is a significant section of our society which is increasingly alienated, with very dangerous results.
“There should perhaps be a standing committee comprising Parliamentarians, lawyers and religious leaders to consider how this could be achieved and what legal changes might be framed.”
The meeting was held at the National Liberal Club in Whitehall.
    ………….
Well, I’ve got a better idea. British law should reincorporate punishments such as ‘Hung, Drawn and Quartered’ for treason.

  16. Michael Ignatieff, Leader of the Liberal Party; a liberal if necessary, but not necessarily liberal.

  17. Yes ET, for a Liberal leader to stop freelancing among his caucus its called speaking with one voice,a Conservative leader who applies the same rule is a “control freak”. How bloody stupid do these media hacks think we are?
Count Iggula the ventriloquist/Puppeteer and his puppets? Perhaps operating behind a black curtain in the dark may be the only option for someone trying to run the Liberal party given the mess they’re currently in.
Personally can’t stand listening to Taber’s twitty voice any longer. I’ll have to be filled in on her nonsense by someone else. CTV sure could use some credible journalists if they plan on running a reputable organization for the long haul.
Why are we not hearing about the $54 billion taken illegally from the EI fund by the Liberals?
Why are they not checking out how this played into their huge surplus they want us to believe was due to good fiscal management?

  18. “Minnesota Mall sets aside prayer room for Muslims, violence thwarted”
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – On the day Muslims around the world began to celebrate Eid al-Adha, Fatuma Mohamed was at the Mall of America (MOA), far away from where she would normally say her prayers.
But she and other Muslims needed to take time from the activities of the mall and find a quiet area to pray as Muslims do during the festival that commemorates Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his only son for God.
This year Muslim leaders from the Twin Cities area were able to persuade MOA, the largest enclosed mall in the United States, to set aside a room for prayers.
Sheikh Neelain Muhammad, an imam at the St.Paul-based Da’wa Islamic Center, and five other volunteers from the center were among the many volunteers who were at the mall to make sure that day went on without incidents, especially from teenagers.
Reynolds, the MOA security director, said that community volunteers were very helpful.
“At one point, Sheikh Neelain Muhammad and his team were spotted talking to the youth and telling them to behave … and so, they did.”
The presence of culturally competent volunteers at the mall avoided the law enforcement solution that often leads to the arrest of Muslim youths.
“No one youth that was acting out that didn’t change after we talked with him or her,” Sheikh Muhammad said.
Mahmood Kanyare, one of the community volunteers, said the volunteers reminded the youth about good manners in Islam.
“They were all responsive to our messages and behaved well as a result,” Kanyare said.
The day ended with a positive note for both MOA and the Muslim community. No one was arrested and only few were asked to leave.

  23. ET,
Your mention of Jane Taber got me curious. I looked on Wikipedia and she’s apparently married to a fellow named David F. Guy. He used to work for the Ottawa Citizen.
Might you or anyone else know if he’s now involved with the Liberal Party of Canada?

  24. ET: What’s good for the Librano goose is NEVER good for the Conservative gander.
PMSH, according to MSM-newsspeak, is ALWAYS a control freak when he enforces discpline within his party and caucus, while the Librano$’ speaking in “one voice” will be proof–well, da proof is da proof, n’est-ce pas?–of Count Iggy’s effectiveness as a leader.
Liz J: “How bloody stupid do these media hacks think we are?”
Pretty bloody stupid. They remind me of a bunch of my students. If I’m standing at the back of the room, even though I can see them, they can’t see me. They think this means that I’m not noticing what they’re doing.
‘Same with the twits in the MSM. They can’t see “us,” the great, unwashed, so they figure we aren’t noticing their duplicitous and biased Librano propaganda.
And then they scratch their heads, not able to figure out why so many of us have stopped buying their stupid newspapers and watching their stupid newscasts. I never watch Giggles Taber. I just can’t take her–or Craig Oliver. They’re both, as you say, Liz J., media hacks.

The idea that graffiti-spraying and other forms of low-level delinquency promote further bad behaviour has now been tested experimentally
A PLACE that is covered in graffiti and festooned with rubbish makes people feel uneasy. And with good reason, according to a group of researchers in the Netherlands. Kees Keizer and his colleagues at the University of Groningen deliberately created such settings as a part of a series of experiments designed to discover if signs of vandalism, litter and low-level lawbreaking could change the way people behave. They found that they could, by a lot: doubling the number who are prepared to litter and steal…

  30. When women are going through menopause, unless they’re homicidal or suicidal, they should avoid taking HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) drugs:
