Federal Election ’08

Though I’ll be posting updates, I’m not going to liveblog what you can readily access online or on air, but the comments are open for your links, reaction and local reports. Just don’t go breaking any laws, though by the looks of things…

… Elections Canada has better things to do than track down surly beavers.
However, as traffic will be heavy tonight, PLEASE avoid tying up server resources with one-liners, chat, expletives, and whatnot.
Game on!
And in these waning hours, one final pitch from Gaia to the voters of southern Saskatchewan –

Only your vote can save the planet from global warming!
Update: Looks like Dizzy Lizzy picked a bad day to go carbon free.
My goodness, a couple of blog sites are getting slammed tonight. (Try not to hit refresh too often, ok?)
And in other breaking news – SDA still up, Elections Canada still down.
Lusers.
Methinks it looks like Karlheinz Schreiber picked a bad day to go midday cocktail free.
One we’ve all been waiting for – GARTH TURNER DEFEATED
Oh! – and to all my deluded Liberal blogging friends living east of Manitoba – I told you so.

  1. …and remember kids, you’ll get a firm scolding if you openly discuss who you’re supporting at a polling station.

  2. I wonder if the Liberals had one of their cronies take down Elections Canada in a hope of preventing their second loss in a row.

  3. go to the DRUDGE REPORT and take a look at Taliban Jack’s Election Canada violations – he’s still advertising from a US server

  4. I have to say, Kate I only skim headlines at the MSM nowadays and then I go to SDA and a few other blogs (more than just blogs) to get the real feel of the issues.
I just voted and I feel like I placed a bet at the track for place.
    Cheers!

  5. While I didn’t see Taliban Jack over at DRUDGE, I must confess if I did I probably thought he was trying to sell me a DVD on EBay selling for fun and profit.
Is it illegal for me to say what I thought I heard about results or is it one of those prosecute Kate for what others say kind of law?

  6. perhaps the least talked about thing in the polls is the level of undecided voters. In every poll I have seen it has been in the 20% range in Ontario and even higher than that in que. Thus the table is set for a surprise tonight in favour of the CP. Almost every seat that the cp currently holds is safe and that cannot be said for any of the other parties.
Perhaps the status qou will be the result but that means that Stephen harper will remain as pm for at least two to three years. Had things got very ugly economically-speaking between now and the scheduled date next year SH may not have been so fortunate. So from my perspective this election will not have been for naught if the current status is the result tonight.

  7. I’m pulling for Canada to go Blue-Majority, from my comfy home in the USA.
If Harper wins, I may be coming up there…especially if Barack O’Dumbbunny wins here.

  8. “So from my perspective this election will not have been for naught if the current status is the result tonight”
    True Dat!
I think that actually is plan ‘A’, plan ‘B’ is wining a majority, either way the Libs are hooped.
WRT undecided voters, the polling #’s are typically high, these are the same voters that will fail to vote, typically.

  9. Ongoing wishlist for later…
Newfoundland vexes Danny and CPC get at least one seat.
PEI sends a CPC MP to Ottawa.
    McKay wins Central Nova.
    Moncton comes through.
Conservatives increase seats in Quebec, causing Duceppe to modify his speech.
    Garth loses.
    G. Kennedy loses.
CPC steals a seat from Libs, and a seat from NDP in MB.
Ralph gets a scare in SK.
    Orchard comes in third.
    Alberta sweep.
    BC gains.
Liberals under Dion have newspaper coverage mentioning John Turner, 28.02% and 1984 a lot tomorrow!

  10. You know, the only thing that bugs me about the Liberals getting beaten tonight is the inevitable exodus (booting) of Stéphane Dion.
That guy was the best thing that ever happened to the Conservatives. I’ll miss him.

  11. “CPC steals a seat from Libs, and a seat from NDP in MB.”
Given that the seat they’d steal from the Libs would be my riding, I’d love it. Shelly Glover, Metis, bilingual, police officer, versus Ray Simard, who votes with the Bloq against Manitoba aerospace and against keeping criminals in jail.
The seat they’d steal from the Dips will be tougher… Thomas Steen, former Winnipeg Jet, is in tough against a Dip MLA in a strong union part of town. (My parents had the good sense to get us out of White Trashcona when I was a wee lad.)

  12. “That guy was the best thing that ever happened to the Conservatives. I’ll miss him.”
Think he’s going to try to hang on and the battle will be really brutal.

  13. Jim Maloway has been a NDP MLA back bencher since 1986. 22 years and never in cabinet.
    Nuff said.

  14. Jim, sure it’s a dud MLA versus a Tory star candidate, but we’re talking Transcona-Elmwood. Bill Blakie didn’t bother to campaign for the past several elections and won handily.

  15. I know the place well. But those burbs have really expanded, and Steen and Hull are the only two sweaters ever retired by the Jets. It’s a NDP fortress, and if Steen pulled it off, it would be historic.

  16. I am looking for a Bloc-CHP-neorhino coalition government that will give us the French-speaking theocracy with unlimited funding for mime theatre that I believe will return this nation to its original destiny.
But if that’s not possible, then bring on a near-majority where Harper has to work for his $10 an hour just like the rest of us stiffs.

  17. I have three wishes for tonight:
My Conservative candidate beats the Liberal incumbent (that’ll mean Ontario is finally wising up and Conservatives will be on their way to majority)
Ellie-Mae is soundly beaten by Peter McKay, and finds herself in third place behind the woman running for the NDP
Garth Turner has to post a concession blog

  18. “Ralph gets a scare in SK.”
A thorough trashing at the polls would be preferable. If anyone deserves a swift kick in the pants … it’s this guy.

  19. Wonder if the monsterously huge run up on the stock market will effect the intentions of some of the undecideds. Calm some of the more panicky types down somewhat from some kneejerk desire to change governments and magically save the economy.

  20. Looks like Kate has an early start on shoveling all that global warming from the driveway.
The electorate looks like it is beginning to shovel away the snow-job of global warming.
    Cheers

  21. At this point, anything keeping Dion from being anywhere near the PM’s job.
Eastern Canadians never cease to amaze me.

  22. “go to the DRUDGE REPORT and take a look at Taliban Jack’s Election Canada violations ”
    Taliban Jackie
    Have another toke
    Of your wacky tabacky
    Then blow some more smoke
    At the art of bloviatin’
No one does it like Jack Layton.

  23. I’m thinkoing that even if the numbers are not improved we will have at minimum 100 new MP’s who will bring new thought, new ideas and a fresh perspective on our parliament.
We had to get rid of the dinosaurs like Paul Martin who collected his MP paycheque for 2 1/2 years for doing nothing while he travelled around the world on personal business befitting his multi millionaire status bestowed on him by Maurice Strong and PowerCorp.
I heard he “cared” so much about his riding that there was barely $3,000 left in the riding account and no executive team at all.
Belinda is another. How many more deadwooods hang arounders like them will finally be replaced by real working MP’s?

  24. Belinda was such a great supporter of our Health Care system, until she goy sick.
Then she jumped on a private jet, went to the USA for better treatment and no lineup.
    Hypocrite +++

  25. I guy named Jay is right now impersonating a lying Jackal by posting nasty rumours on his blog.

  26. “If anyone deserves a swift kick in the pants … it’s this guy.”
Let us not forget that smarmy little weazel, Mark Holland…
If he gets tossed, I`ll die happy…
Oh and my personal drinking game for tonight…a shot for every time the term `vote-rich Ontario“is mentioned by the pundits…

  27. “PLEASE avoid tying up server resources with one-liners”
That will decrease my posting volume by 97%.

  28. If Taliban is showing up on Drudge iit was bought through an aggregator likely 24/7 media…..they have canadian sales and canadian control….either 24/7 screwed up or Jack’s group did a bad buy….I look forward to elections canada investigating….

  29. to get to the blogging tories postings, you need an iphone. Or just navigate to bloggingtories.ca/iphone

  30. Look to see Whining Danny boy cry when his Lieberal Red province is as un-represented as toronto…
Frikkin’ maritimers never fail to confuse me…

  31. NFLD may regret taking Danny’s advice when their shipyards don’t get any Navy or Coast Guard business and it all ends up here on the west coast

  32. What a dream come true if Trudeau and May go down to defeat tonight.
“no scruples, no ethics, and no reflection.”

  33. Oh so true Fred. I remember when Calgary had an army and Edmonton had an air force… until they voted Reform. That mess was pure spite from the little f**k from Shitwinigan. MP Harper isn’t that vindictive but they shouldn’t expect any favours either.

  34. “The Grade 9 Social Studies Class from Arthur A. Leach School in Winnipeg has been thinking about the federal election. Watch them in the hallways of their school as they tell us what’s on their minds. Teachers: Kristen Myers, David Wall, and Chris Olenick”
    At the CTV website.
    Puke.

  35. And Fred shows his colossal ignorance of all things Atlantic.
The Navy, CG and Marine Atlantic have had all their work done by Halifax Shipyards for about a decade now.

  36. I have my fingers crossed that Garth T. will be given the oppurtunity to replace Lizzie as head of the greenies.

  37. Oh please wallyj, I’m thinking you don’t live next door to his riding. I’m hoping he’ll be replaced.

  38. Global Coverage: Two thumbs down.
    1) Ipsos Reid commenting on the 3000 viewer responses: 33% worried about the economy. CLOSE UP SCREEN SHOT of the issues of concern to voters. (“Dion chose the wrong issue at the wrong time.” Yeah!)
Preferred Leader? Harper by a mile—but NO CLOSE UP SCREEN SHOT. (So, I don’t know the particulars. Neither does anyone else.) “Let’s move on, folks.”
    2) Dust My Broom—identified as an Aboriginal site—was highlighted at a Kingston pub, checking out the blogs: the left wing, political poster with the American flag superimposed on Harper’s face was shown (cheers from crowd)—as if Darcy approved it.
    3) Catherine Clark, daughter of Joe and Maureen, told us what it’s like to be a candidate on election day. “Well, as it’s a lot of waiting, it’s a good day for the women to get their hair done.” I kid you not!
    4) Media talking head (straight face), “Just what is it that keeps Harper from getting a majority?”
    But Lizzie May LOST! ALLELUIA!!

  39. Oh dear god…
Elizabeth May: “If kids age five and up could vote, I would have won!”
And there’s a few reasons why we dont let kids vote:
    1. Crayons just arent a good way to mark your ballot.
    2. Drawing a picture of a puppy or a beaver (take that any way you want) on your ballot also isnt a good way to mark your ballot.
    3. Elizabeth May would have won a seat.
