We Don’t Need No Stinkin’ Giant Fans

Image if 20% of a city’s population were assembled and together agreed to individually implement at least one environmentally beneficial action. This is the WAM model – pulling together a significant proportion of the city’s community and asking them to agree to commit to at least one of a list of specific, effective, and locally relevant actions. Multiplied across the city, each individual action contributes to massive, measurable change – environmental impact that we can actually see…”

  1. what if they gave a festival and nobody came?
social justice tent, childrens eco face painting.
sounds more like an average vancouver weekend.
did anyone get a picture of the folks in squirrel costumes or hairy legged les bian folkies.
the mind boggles that all these ex hippies can still get gubmint money for their useless strategies.

  2. Sad. But funny also. Was there a secret grinder for two-foots at the festival? Removing their carbon footprint permanently?

  3. Ouch!
Not a government town obviously, but isn’t there a University? Oh, school hasn’t started yet……

  4. Hilarious, but, I think I understand a big part of what went terribly wrong for them after looking around their site. Under “what you need to know” in attending their festival:
Reduce the amount of waste generated by encouraging people to bring their own mug, dishware, and cutlery. Although dishwashing stations will not be available, participants can bring reusable containers and wash them when they get home.
Even a 5 year old would have told them that that wasn’t going to work out too well. LOL

  5. Events/programs/studies like this make me want to slap everyone involved–and I am not a violent person.
What would have really frightened me is if this WAM festival was packed–I would have had to lock the doors and have food brought in. (in styroform free containers, of course)

  6. So they braved the frosty air — shall I make the obvious remark about the irony of this in the face of supposed global warming? And they run a “global justice” tent to help you make global connections, presumably to help fight globalization. These guys have me on the ropes. I just couldn’t make this stuff up.

  7. our salmon derby is on & yesterday was kids day. Took the grand kids, there must have been a thousand kids & all free rides, clowns entertainment(excl.pop, food & bottled water). And all volunteer labor, these guys no how to do it entertainment every day in the big tent lots of prizes, current biggest salmon caught is at 18.2 lbs

  9. It could pass as a gathering of supporters of The Green Shift.
I no longer care as Stephane Dion has already stated that if he was not elected last year to implement Kyoto(I remember when),that it would be too late and we were all gonna die.
Noticed that the Liberals have whitewashed Adscam on Wiki.

  10. Bryanr- You’re bringing back memories of OS where I lived in the early ’60’s. I remember well the fish ladders and of course the ‘mile drive’ at Harrison Park. Gus Mitges was MPP at the time ( Commie Pinko ) and Eddie Sargeant (crook) was Mayor and the proprietor of the Downtowner Hotel.
The very best years of my misspent youth was spent between there and Sauble. A truly fine Ontario City that maintains it’s culture and traditions.

Why not start with Moscow, Beijing, Tabriz or Riyad?
…why do these neo-comm social engineering projects start in nations that don’t need social “change”?

  12. So just how did all those groups produce their music? I don’t see no giant fans, nuke plants,or geothermal generating stations around. Or did they use all that hot air from We Are Morons?

  13. Hey bryanr, I’ve got you guys beat. I caught a 25lb salmon on the west coast this past weekend. Two of my friends on the trip hauled in 33 lb ers. Guess what I’m eating this week.

  14. Wow, memories of Owen Sound. I spent many a good time fishing for rainbow trout on the Pottawotami (sp?) River, near my home. I remember Eddie Sargent and his two massive Great Dane dogs. I knew Gus Mitges quite well too. Went to West Hill Seconday School, rather than Owen Sound Collection of Various Idiots (OSCVI).
Our football team was a dynasty back then with Blaine Courtenay as our star running back. If we needed a touchdown, QB called a sweep, left or right didn’t matter, to Blaine. If he got one block he was gone.
Blaine was good friends with my brother. I remember Blaine telling a neighbour his house was worth more. When he was told both houses were the same, Blaine jokingly remarked, “yeah but I don’t have a black guy living beside me.”
To me those were good times, when political correctness didn’t exist.
OT I know, but nice walk down memory lane.

  15. Yup. Clearly the People are so alarmed and terrified out of their minds about the imminent end of the planet that they’ll show up at any public event in the vain hope of learning something about, say, how to survive and cope in a post-apocalyptic world, or, even more vainly, to hear some good news, like it’s all a hoax after all…
Yup. Al Gore has really convinced the People of the veracity and seriousness of what he’s been claiming.

  16. I THINK that a lot of folks have had it up to here with the Suzukian Cult. I blame the major networks, especially the CBC. I just went on CBC.Ca. I commented on the headline: PRIME MINSTER IN PANIC, says Dion.”
If you`re willing to brownose the Liberals, they`ll publish your commnets faster than you can type them up. If you`re cheering for Mr. Harper, your comments will be edited, and quite often not published. WHO PAYS FOR THE CBC?? Could thay be ALL LIBERALS.
This “WAM” concert is the same. A lot of hype that was made public by the Liberal media. There’s only one way out of this mess. We “Righties” must percevere and print the truth!!

  17. Looks like the hole left by the departure of legendary City Councillor Owen Mann has never been filled. He was known for being a superlative tightwad with the city’s tax money. No greenie would have got one red nickle to waste from the city coffers under his watchful eyes.

  18. I have an ex sister-in-law who reminds me of Madonna. You think you find her disgusting?
My thoughts on the Denver convention and the protests:
The kids are from a liberal mix of dark blue collar bread winners and upper middle class backgrounds. Like “Dumpster Muffin” (the gingerbread child from Berkeley who’s marks were so bad in her first term that she retreated to a tree), she’s been told all of her life how special she is from not only Mom and Dad, but from Pappa and Mammy – aunts and uncles.
Showered with praise since she could remember, being lazy or over-rated can be devastating.
Lots of kids in this up and coming generation are focused and ambitious and will create wealth and often times, as single individuals, actually create the resources to right a wrong when someone weaker in their “orbit” or beyond is being wronged.
Too many of today’s spawn are so confused and guilty about not being able to live up to Mammy and Papa’s expectations. After high school???
These eyeballs end up at university and crave for praise. When they can’t get it because they’re too lazy or inept and their marks explore the Kelvin scale, head for the trees and obsfucate the reason as to why you’ve decided to live in a tree.
    Mr. X.

  19. Mr X: I had an “ex” sister in law just like that. The b@#$% possessed me like a demon from hell! One day I met a Baptist Pastor. He suggested that I turn her over to the Higher Power, AKA, God. He claimed God did a much better job of handling my enemies than I possibly could. I did just that. The b@#$% died a month later, sudden heart attack. (No guff.) Let me give you a hand. “Our Father, who art in ……

  20. Sounds freaky, Realistik. I get spooked out when baking soda and vinegar are combined.
Are you copying and pasting the “b@#$%” ?
    Mr. X.

  21. Wham! really went downhill after George Michael got himself arrested for waving his hootus at a cop in a public toilet.
But bilking Saskatoon taxpayers for $50K — now THAT is obsecene.

  22. Shamrock, Malcolm
Salmon Derby Central has reported that 22.44lbs+ leads the derby now. For those that don’t know about this derby it is in it’s 23yr & is the biggest salmon derby going, north of the smoke.
DrD. this is great lakes salmon quite a difference.
Shamrock i knew Gus pretty good too & always worked on his team as a Young PC, I also grew up a block away from the Pot.(across from harrison field) & fished it too, Remember opening Nite & Ted & Graces staying Open to feed the Fisherman(we did not go their on that nite, too busy Borrowing my dads beer). I also remember Blaine & that football team they ruled as i went to WHSS too in early 70’s.

  23. The government has consistently looked to voluntary initiatives for individuals rather than regulations.
Are people here really saying that this approach sucks and we really need regulations?
Didn’t expect to see such boosters of big government here! LOL!!!

  25. The city of Saskatoon provided $22500 of funding after the same amounts were secured from both the Provincial and Federal Governments. In addition, $40,000 was secured from a US based organization. The cities grant funds was based on the group securing funds from other levels of government, hosting this as a one time event, and charging an admission to all attendees. The WAM group secured funds from the Feds and Province, Ministry of the Environment, and the city confirmed the grant.
One week before WAM festive, the head organizer, a very gifted public speaker, savvy lobbyist, and card carrying member of the NDP youth wing explained to council she could not afford to build a fence around Diefenbaker park, so would like to allow free access. You see the grant money came from a special fund, which would support one time events like the Tim Horton’s Brier or World University Games, which would all charge admission. If the event is free, then every group in the city, and there are many, would also be asking for the same consideration (which I think is exactly what is going to happen). So in council’s wisdom, it voted to accept that a coin collection/voluntary donation would be admission to WAM. They changed city policy with that decision. One councillor, left leaning Darren Hill even offered to pre-pay an admission of 1 cent for 25000 people, which made the WAM organizers happy, but sets an interesting stage every other group to suggest the same. In addition, while I was on site on Sunday between 2 and 3, I over heard a lot of talk about where and when WAM would be held next year. So the cities funds, which were granted based on a set of guidelines for all groups, were twisted beyond recognition by the WAM organizers, with the help of Saskatoon city council (Mayor, and two councillors voted against the request from WAM on Aug 11) and have set up this council to have to turn down the many requests that will come to council in 2009, an election year for the city.
Uranium, tar-sands and bottled water are all evil is what I learned from this Festival. There were so many other things that were also evil, too many to list here. Interesting though, I saw a diesel generator behind a stage. When my wife used the port-a-potty at 3 pm in the beer tent, she had to unwrap the roll, because it had not been touched. I counted 61 people in front of the stage at 3 pm, maybe 300 in the entire park, all most every one of them were believers.
The WAM festival did not reach mainstream society; it was an activist convention, paid for by the tax payers.
50,000 attended the Car Show in downtown Saskatoon at the same time on Sunday. Cars or WAM.
The decison for Saskatoonians was simple.
