Oh my. I cannot even say “shit” anymore, because it may be construed as slang for “Shi’ite”. Doncha just love “free speech” ala Canuickstan style?
I like the idea, but what is that like 48 fields? Bit of an overshoot.
It would be nice if there were an easy way to file hate crime claims against politicians using the HRC. Probably the only way anything will get done about it.
It’s interesting that Canada has a constitutional guarantee of ‘free speech’ but it immediately contradicts this ‘fundamental’ right by then setting up rigorous judiciary overseeing of written and spoken expressions. It has established courts, which can penalize, jail and harass citizens for their speech.
This same system is free to any who file a complaint; the costs are born by the defendant. This violates equality of legal treatment in our constitution.
What is so strange is that we Canadians then shrilly accuse China of not allowing free speech. Our Canadian (not US) MSM commentators grudgingly comment on how well the Chinese organized these Olympics but this is always, always, accompanied by the statements about the ‘lack of free speech’ in China and deep sighs about ‘how far the Chinese still have to travel’ to reach the heights of Canadian civilization.
What’s going on? In China, you can’t criticize the govt – but – most Chinese utterly ignore the govt anyway; it’s there to see that things get done – roads, buildings, etc. Most Chinese are far too interested in capitalism and getting rich. That’s what they criticize and they do – any efforts to inhibit this capitalism and their moving out into the world, in business, in science..
In Canada, you can criticize the govt; our leftist MSM and Liberal House Commissions do nothing else, focusing on any trivia they can come up with or better yet, create. But, you can’t criticize the behaviour of people.
Our multicultural nation has rejected the collaborative ideal of ‘Canadianness’ in favour of ‘Hotel Canada’ by locking all immigrants into isolate blocs defined by their group identity. Each bloc is kept separate, it’s funded by the govt to remain separate and emotionally bonded to its old Identity Logo: its religion, its language, its ethnicity, its old nationality.
In Canada, it is forbidden to criticize the behaviour of people -in-their-blocs. This behaviour can violate our rules; it can promote polygamy, child marriage; racism. It can preach about killing members of other groups. But we Canadians aren’t allowed to say a word. Because that might ‘offend’ some members of these Protected Groups. And in Canada, this is Not Allowed.
So, when Rev. Boissoin writes that his religion is against homosexuality, our courts jump on him and take him to court and fine him and tell him that he is never, ever, even in private, to say a word that might ‘offend’ someone in this Protected Group of Homosexuals.
When some authors write that Islam, calling itself peaceful, is in actuality, mass murdering people in the name of that religion – our courts move in and tell them that this is ‘not allowed’; it’s ‘Islamophobic’ rather than fact.
However, if you are not a member of a Protected Group, if you are white, Christian, European, heterosexual or whatever…then, you are not protected. It’s permitted in Canada to express the most foul and offensive statements against people in the Unprotected Groups.
Free speech in Canada? Heh.
ET, I am amazed that Canada’s CBC didn’t get bounced from China during the olympics. Not only did the CBC tsk tsk the Chinese for lack of free speech, I was watching Ron MacLean and Mark Tewkesbury commenting on some event when MacLean, out of the blue, started asking Tewkesbury about how tough it was being a homosexual athelete in (gasp!) Calgary. I mean there are a lot of things that China was clamping down on but I thought this was a case of baiting the Dragon.
Mark Tewkesbury was doing a great job commenting and looks like he has what it takes to make the transition from former Olympian to a knowledgeable journalist. It’s a shame the CBC had to use him to snub thier collective leftoid noses at China.
that’s the way I saw it, anyhow.
Agreed, texas canuck, the bias, the endless sneers of the CBC on the Olympics was quite astonishing. It was the same mindset that they use when referring to the US and Americans.
The same sneers, contempt, the same open assertions of Canadian moral superiority. They had to, unfortunately, acknowledge the excellent organization of the games by the Chinese, the professionalism of it all – even the clean air – but, they did their best to immediately denigrate such behaviour with constant ‘BUT…’ references to anything from ‘their human rights, their lack of free speech, their..whatever’..
There’s even an MSM commentary about the ‘Bird’s Nest’ looking rusty..
We’ve got articles in the press about how the Chinese moved homes to build the Olympic stadiums – and this is seen as ‘against human rights’. We ignore that Canada, unlike China, has no private property rights, and land/homes are regularly expropriated for highways and industrial developments. Heck, we even move whole Inuit villages (Davis Inlet) at the drop of a hat; we move native reservations to make way for oil devt. Quebec’s famous James Bay hydro dam was built on native land without their OK, without a sale, without a contract. When the natives went to the Quebec court to get a stop-order to the bulldozers, the legislature overturned the court -yes, that’s right – and went on building it anyway. Oh..but they are natives (aka Chinese peasants)..and who cares, eh?
The Canadian Leftist envy of any and all who Dare to Win, the Canadian smugness which turns a blind eye to itself – is supreme.
Excellent comments and spot on ET.
since the warthog wanted a “whiteville”..what about moving the CommieHeathenRitesCaliphate to the arctic?
I watched quite a bit of the Olympics on the CBC too, and I thought they did a good job. I don’t understand NBC’s method of skipping a lot of live events and then making a “product” for the evening, especially in this day and age with instant messages, blogs, etc. I don’t think I’ve watched anything on the CBC since, oh, about four years ago, when the Olympics were in Athens. Apparently I’m missing a lot of people telling me stories that I don’t want to hear anyway.
I saw the exchange between Ron MacLean and Mark Tewksbury regarding the latter being gay. I think there was a context of some kind, it’s common knowledge and I didn’t think it was an unreasonable line of questioning. I read somewhere that Tewksbury was offended, but I for one don’t have any less respect for him. He did good work in Athens and good work in Beijing. And of course in Barcelona where he won his gold!
nv53, your last sentence or two is precisely why the Ron MacLean and Mark Tewkesbury gay chit chat was uncalled for, especially the reference to Calgary. I recall that he did come out of the closet a long while back but so what. He was a great athelete and competetor, not to mention a Olympic Gold medal champ. He made Canada proud and now he is showing talent in the broadcasting field or probably any endevour he wishes to persue, so why drag up the gay thing? I don’t think it is relevant but then again it is my opinion.

Well said, ET.
Pity most canadians are too wrapped up in themselves or political non-issues to realize that our rights as free citizens are slowly eroding at the behest of unelectable government flunkies and supreme court judges.
And the US may follow suit (albeit slowly) if they elect the likes of obama
