Reader Tips

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your delectation and pursuant to our Sunday night classical music show, we have the pleasure of guest DJ Shaken spinning Evgeny Kissin performing Alexander Nikolayevich Scriabin‘s Patetico Etude in D# minor, op. 8 no. 12 (2:30).

Shaken writes: “An incredible piece of music. Those who know the [piano] love this for its funky G# minor tones, low B, low D#, sweet F# and A# intervals. Scriabin had this very unorthodox idea about colors and sounds. This piece does indeed expose something of that notion. The young fellow [Evgeny Kissin] playing this is, in my opinion, possibly the best living pianist today. Together, it is one breathtaking performance of an intense, dramatic, hideously difficult piece of music.”

I’d have to agree with Shaken there. But wait, there’s more. Here, ladies and gentlemen, for the first time in the history of man, SDA Late Nite Radio studios brings together for you, at this single venue, performances of Scriabin’s Patetico Etude not only by Evgeny Kissin as recommended by Shaken, but also by Alexander Scriabin himself (the original), by Vladimir Horowitz (always a favourite of ours here in the studio), by Sergei Rachmaninoff , and by Alfred Cortot . You must admit, studying Scriabin’s Patetico Etude this way would be much more difficult without this technology 😉

Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

  1. Sarkozy and the EU smacked down by Le Pen in an EU Parliament speech last week.
    Memorable quote:
Your Europe is a drifting vessel, windswept and beaten by the waves. It is the only region in the world to have deliberately dismantled its political and moral structures.
Without borders, gradually invaded by a mass immigration which is only at its beginning, economically ruined by the ultra-liberalism, socially impoverished, weakened demographically, without spirit and military strength. At best, it will fall under the American protectorate, at worse it will become a slave of the dhimmitude.

  3. Lorne Gunter’s column in the National Post, Editorials, page 8, “Do as Al says, not as Al does” is a fun read.
He exposes the hypocrisy of Al of Gore and his toadies, riding about in Lincoln Town cars and a full sized SUV, idling with A/C while the great BSer is spewing his guts on what we peons must do.
Realistically, it’s hard to imagine Gore’s big arse in a Mini Cooper.
Love this quote from Gunter’s column: “It was 34C in Washington, Al gore can’t be expected to get into an over-heated vehicle after he’s worked up a sweat telling others how to save the planet”.

“So Much for the ‘Looted Sites’
A recent mission to Iraq headed by top archaeologists from the U.S. and U.K. who specialize in Mesopotamia found that, contrary to received wisdom, southern Iraq’s most important historic sites — eight of them — had neither been seriously damaged nor looted after the American invasion. This, according to a report by staff writer Martin Bailey in the July issue of the Art Newspaper. The article has caused confusion, not to say consternation, among archaeologists and has been largely ignored by the mainstream press. Not surprising perhaps, since reports by experts blaming the U.S. for the postinvasion destruction of Iraq’s heritage have been regular fixtures of the news.”

  5. “Professor Antony Flew reviews The God Delusion (World’s foremost former atheist critiques Dawkins)”
“The God Delusion by the atheist writer Richard Dawkins, is remarkable in the first place for having achieved some sort of record by selling over a million copies. But what is much more remarkable than that economic achievement is that the contents – or rather lack of contents – of this book show Dawkins himself to have become what he and his fellow secularists typically believe to be an impossibility: namely, a secularist bigot. (Helpfully, my copy of The Oxford Dictionary defines a bigot as ‘an obstinate or intolerant adherent of a point of view’).
The fault of Dawkins as an academic (which he still was during the period in which he composed this book although he has since announced his intention to retire) was his scandalous and apparently deliberate refusal to present the doctrine which he appears to think he has refuted in its strongest form. Thus we find in his index five references to Einstein. They are to the mask of Einstein and Einstein on morality; on a personal God; on the purpose of life (the human situation and on how man is here for the sake of other men and above all for those on whose well-being our own happiness depends); and finally on Einstein’s religious views. But (I find it hard to write with restraint about this obscurantist refusal on the part of Dawkins) he makes no mention of Einstein’s most relevant report: namely, that the integrated complexity of the world of physics has led him to believe that there must be a Divine Intelligence behind it. (I myself think it obvious that if this argument is applicable to the world of physics then it must be hugely more powerful if it is applied to the immeasurably more complicated world of biology.)
Of course many physicists with the highest of reputations do not agree with Einstein in this matter. But an academic attacking some ideological position which s/he believes to be mistaken must of course attack that position in its strongest form. This Dawkins does not do in the case of Einstein and his failure is the crucial index of his insincerity of academic purpose and therefore warrants me in charging him with having become, what he has probably believed to be an impossibility, a secularist bigot.”

  8. Spengler, Turkey in the throes of Islamic revolution?
Turkey is half pregnant with political Islam, if one believes Western foreign ministries and the mainstream press. Its Islamist government last week arrested 82 alleged coup plotters from Turkey’s military and intellectual elite, on the strength of a secret indictment of 2,445 pages. Turkish media have offered fanciful allegations linking the secular leaders of the alleged “Ergenekon” plot to al-Qaeda as well as the violent Kurdish Workers’ Party. Among those detailed are pillars of the secular establishment, including the head of the Ankara Chamber of Commerce and the Ankara editor of the country’s leading daily newspaper, Cumhuriyet…

The Great Global Warming Swindle, a controversial Channel 4 film, broke Ofcom rules, the media regulator says.
In a long-awaited judgement, Ofcom says Channel 4 did not fulfil obligations to be impartial and to reflect a range of views on controversial issues.
The film also treated interviewees unfairly, but did not mislead audiences “so as to cause harm or offence”.
Plaintiffs say the Ofcom judgement is “inconsistent” and “lets Channel 4 off the hook on a technicality.””

  13. Lori@12:07am,
It’s good to see that there is still fire in the belly of the old buzzard, Le Pen. However, the French and the other Euros will not listen.
Just like the Brits did not listen to this fellow 40 years ago, but vilified him instead. If he were to make this speech in Canada today, he would be before an HRC tomorrow.
Now his prediction is coming true, but just not so much involving the particular immigrant minority he identified back then.

  17. The 12th century is alive and thriving. who ever would have known we are in the 21st..
Islamabad (AsiaNews) – District judge Mian Muhammad Naeem, of the section of Muzaffargarh, has ruled that the two Christian sisters “have converted in a legitimate manner to Islam”, and for this reason they cannot be “restored to their family of origin”.
“Saba Younas, aged 13, and her sister Anila were kidnapped last June 26 in the village of Chowk Munda, in the province of Punjab, where they had gone to visit their uncle, Khalid Raheel…. According to Raheel’s account, a Muslim fruit vendor named Muhammad Arif Bajwa kidnapped the girls, and then handed them over to a friend, Falak Sher Gill, who then organised the marriage between his own son and the older of the Christian sisters, Saba. In court, moreover, father and son both stressed the “complete willingness of the girl to contract marriage”.

  18. Just finished reading the latest from fat head Mohamed Elmasry, maz2. Needless to say I’m profoundly angered. We all should go after this crap.
Now he’s accusing Harper of racism and being anti-Muslim. That is one dude who should have been booted out long ago.
Khadr’s problems have nothing to do with this present government. The Liberals ignored the little creep/trained terrorist for FOUR years, now it’s Harper who these a**holes are calling on to free him to the safe arms of Canadian Justice.
More galling was Paul Martin on CTV yesterday saying, “knowing what they know now”, implying they would have acted on it, yeah right. Tell us the Liberals didn’t have any information from anyone on the terrorist spawn.
CSIS had the interrogation tape while the Liberals were in power. If there was extreme abuse it would have been seized upon, by the bleeding hearts of the Liberal Left. Add to that Chretien went to visit the Khadr’s loving Poppa when he was a patient in a Pakistani hospital, pleading for his return to his HOME in Canada. Jean had to be worried sick about the dear little fellow. Why didn’t he act?
Was it a case of we DIDN’T know then what we know now? Hypocrites, all of them.
    Damned conniving, desperate, Liberal liars.
Elmasry may need to give us some explanation as to why he thinks someone who was fighting against their own country as this Khadr was and killed an Allied medic should be tried here.
He was over there with his terrorist father. Does Elmasry support the mother who said she’d be proud to have her sons martyr themselves for the cause?
    Killing innocent people.
    Disgusting.

  19. I suffer anaphylactic shock when reading most leftist publications. Dissent is a peculiar exception — some of its authors and editors can actually think. Still, keep an Epipen at the ready.
Leonard Fein, Reflections of a Sometime Israel Lobbyist
HERE’S A SECRET, the kind we hardly acknowledge to ourselves.
But first, you may be wondering who this “we” is, on whose behalf I am writing. In truth, I am not sure. Maybe it is the Jews. But the problem with “Jews” is—well, not all Jews are in on the secret. Or maybe it is the Zionists. But the problem with “Zionists” is that the word has come to seem musty, at best, and in these last several decades it has been appropriated by exclusivist fanatics. So let me spell it out: the “we” here means old-fashioned liberal Zionists, people who intuitively endorse the idea of a Jewish state, people who acknowledge that to secure the safety of that state and to ennoble its character are the compelling Jewish projects of our time, hence people who these days suffer considerable anxiety and are not strangers to disappointment. Things are not going very well, or even just average well…

  20. Myron Magnet, The Great African-American Awakening
The conversation about race that Barack Obama says America needs is already in full swing—and it is a conversation among blacks. Its spark was a speech that TV star Bill Cosby gave at the NAACP in 2004. In books and articles, on talk shows and in town meetings, at barbecues and barber shops, African-Americans have been arguing over his words ever since. Their impassioned discussion is the most hopeful development in race relations in years…

  21. All Khadr, All the time…
    http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2008/07/21/khadr-elmasry.html
On the bright side, I find it amusing that the Canadian Press put this paragraph in at the end, even if that’s the place least likely to be read:
Elmasry is no stranger to controversy. In 2004, he sparked a firestorm of criticism by saying any Israeli over the age of 18 was a legitimate target for suicide bombers because adult Israelis were required to do military service.

  22. Heh. Stupid leftards think there is a 50 year life expectancy GAP between Blacks and Asians.

Case in point: This widely forwarded article from the Independent in the UK. The headline caught my attention: “American inequality highlighted by 30-year gap in life expectancy.” Gap with whom, I wondered. The story leads with the answer: “A 30-year gap now exists in the average life expectancy between Mississippi, in the Deep South, and Connecticut, in prosperous New England.” What’s more, the story said, there is “a staggering 50-year life expectancy gap” between Asian-American men and black Americans.

“My favorite was this reposting of the Independent story. One of the commenters points out the absurdity by relaying actual data, but he is ignored by plenty of others, who swallow the Independent story whole. One of them says “Anybody with a 3 digit IQ that hasn’t been locked in a closet for the past decade doesn’t need a report to know this.” I somehow doubt that the commenter just forgot to add the final three words, “story is wrong.”

  24. “Hitchens: The Blind Salamander
Christopher Hitchens (yes, everyone knows he’s an unabashed atheist) makes an excellent point about a certain species of cave-dwelling salamander, related to a topic that keeps showing up in The LGF Creationism Cage Match—the evolution of the eye: How blind salamanders make nonsense of creationists’ claims.
Or in this case, the devolution of the eye, to adapt to an environment where vision is unnecessary for—in some cases, detrimental to—survival.”

  25. I detest Mohamed Elmasry not because he’s “brown-skinned” (his own words back at him) or because he’s a Muslim but because he indiscriminantly and erroneously uses the racial/religious bigotry card to forward his own agenda.
His accusations against Prime Minister Stephen Harper– PM ignoring Khadr because he’s ‘brown-skinned’: Elmasry (http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2008/07/21/khadr-elmasry.html)–are groundless.
He insists that PMSH’s decision not to interfere with the U.S. legal system is due to Mr. Harper’s “playing politics because of the backdrop of Islamophobia in this country.”
Yada, yada, yada. What Islamophobia? ‘Any mosques been burned down? ‘Any Muslims been beaten up? His accusations, based on no evidence but his own prejudices, should never have made it into the media–but, that’s the MSM for you, especially CBCPravda.
Where was Mr. Elmasry’s indignation when for years the Librano$ left Mr. Khadr Jr. in Gitmo, raising not a finger to bring him home? What was the reason behind the LPC and PM Paul Martin’s inaction? Were they also “racial bigots”? Did they leave Omar Khadr in Gitmo because he was “brown-skinned” and because of Canadians’ supposed “Islamophobia”?
If anyone’s bigoted it’s Mr. Elmasry. He has maligned all Canadians when he accuses “this country” of Islamophobia. I do not resemble his remark, nor do most Canadians.
