Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your delectation, here is Vladimir Horowitz (ולדימיר הורוביץ, Володимир Горовиць) performing the first movement of Sergei Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto #3 in D minor, op. 30, with the New York Philharmonic orchestra, Zubin Mehta conducting (~1989, 17:31). Interestingly, perhaps, Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto #3 in D minor was the work Mr. Horowitz performed at his graduation from the Kiev Conservatory, in 1919.
Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.
This is interesting. The overwhelming majority of the comments pursuant to this CBC article on the CHRC decision in respect of the Maclean’s complaint are strongly in favour of the decision as rendered. For those who have not yet had the opportunity to peruse the full decision, the four-page PDF is available; I think it’s quite good.
This is more good news. It may very well be that pace all the details and the bureaucratic shysters, the significant majority of Canadians, and the highest levels of our leadership, do understand the danger of state control of speech. Coupled with the SCC decision on defamation jurisprudence, 9/0 unanimous, it occurs to me that we may be starting to see a chill put on the chill on freedom of speech.
Of course, as John Stuart Mill said, “The fatal tendency of mankind to leave off thinking about a thing when it is no longer doubtful, is the cause of half their errors”. So I don’t think we should do that. I’m just wondering. And, I’ve been wrong before.

Spooky! A young piano aspirant and I were comparing video notes about this very concerto today. Watched a master’s class on it. It’s one of the most difficult piano pieces out there. The last few minutes are a left hand waterboarding.
For a chaser, I recommend Horowitz’ wonderful encore piece, the Scriabin Etude Op8 #12. A few mistakes, but, the man performed with such heart.
What can I say, I love this piece. Its like a mathematical progression of sound.
The musicians here do an excellent job.

Pretty amazing for an 86-year old. I hope when I’m 86 I’ll still know how to work the phone.
In the interests of erecting the biggest tent possible here at SDA — fifty miles wide — I hereby submit the New York Philharmonic anti-particle:

Is this true? When is the Order of Canada bestowed on July 1st?
Campaign Life Coalition is appalled that Henry Morgentaler should even be considered for the Order of Canada
TORONTO, June 28 /CNW/ – It has come to the attention of Campaign Life
Coalition (CLC) that the Governor General intends to bestow the Order of
Canada on abortionist Henry Morgentaler on July 1st.
“It is dreadful that this honour should even be considered for a man
who’s only claim to fame is that he is a professional killer of defenseless
babies in their mothers’ wombs,” said Jim Hughes, National President of
Campaign Life Coalition. “Those who have received this prestigious medal
should return it because it will have been devalued and disgraced,” he
continued.
“If Morgentaler had any integrity he would refuse the medal”, said Mary
Ellen Douglas, National Organizer of CLC. “This presentation should be given
to people who have made Canada a better place to live and the elimination of
thousands of human beings who would have contributed to the future of Canada
is a disgrace not an honour.”
Campaign Life Coalition calls on the Federal Government to address the
Governor General stating the inappropriateness of this action. Concerned
people should contact the Governor General’s office and express their disgust.

I found this piece to be a fine virtuoso performance by the pianist – plaudits. But it lacked depth, probably due to the conductor and, more importantly, Rackmaninov.
What were his intentions? Did he just want to write a smart-arse piano piece, or take the audiance through the gamut of human emotion? I think he just was trying to be clever.
Things seem to be moving ahead on the HRC front these days. Even the MSM are beginning to carry items now that the CHRC has dismissed the Macleans issue. More is better!
Perhaps now is a good time to also start shining the light of day on the IRB (Immigration Refugee Board). Second to the HRCs, they are making far reaching decisions that are often just as pathetic as those emanating from the HRCs.
The IRB is another quasi-judicial body that is contributing to the breakdown of justice and the social fabric of this country. It has become a powerful organization that is running amok, just as the HRCs. Adjudicators (not judges) and making decisions in areas that are far over their depth – often with negative consequences for law, order, and illegals.
While it is federal, the provincial offices seem to have considerable autonomy to do their thing so it becomes a provincial matter as well.
Google on the Immigration and Refugee Board for some interesting information. An appointment has been recently made to a human rights lawyer who was formerly a commissioner with the AB HRC – not recently, but at the time the HRC was building (about 1989-93).
What we don’t need is more cross-pollination between any HRC and the IRB – particularly at management levels. Or for that matter, any more cross-pollination between the Armed Services Grievance Authority.
It seems the IRB is hiring – pretty much in a city near you.
Check out the qualifications/preferences in candidates running on their web site – and weep. There are enough loop holes in the criterion to justify the hiring of just about anybody.
Good for you, RW, and if you would bother to read the Horowitz link I posted, you would see that basically no one else agrees with you. But do carry on, as long as you’re havin’ fun.
And I have to ask, EBD, why just go for 50 miles? Why not 500? Here, for your delectation, are Leon Russell, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Doug Kershaw performing Jambalia at Willie Nelson’s 2nd Annual 4th of July Picnic in College Station, Texas (1974, 4:42).

There was a letter in the National Post on Saturday from a seriously misguided person who believes that anyone who expresses an opinion opposed to abortion is guilty of “misogynist hate speech”.
This demonstrates clearly why the “human rights” commissions and tribunals need to be shut down: lefty wackjobs will tar any idea they disagree with as “hate speech”.
We saw political correctness run amok in Ontario under premier Bob Rae. We all know it’s still a threat to a society based on freedom and justice.
Disagree with anything that any leftarded moonbat says, and you will find “hate speech” alright. It is normally the hate spewing out of the leftoid’s mouth.
Whether it be abortion, immigration or homosexual issues, you either adopt the “progressive” position, or they will do everything in their power to ruin your life.
Take abortion for example. As an atheist, I object to abortion purely for scientific and natural reasons. It is no coincidence that we abort as many person’s lives as we allow to immigrate into this country every year. Without the inflow of new bodies, our population base would be in serious decline because of abortion. Yet, if a person brings up this little fact, he is an evil, bible thumping misogynist????? I am not even allowed to disagree with my tax dollars being used to end the lives of infants.
No, my friends, the real “haters” in our society today are the crazed lefties who “hate” anyone who disagrees with them!
Council chiefs are reminding voters of the work they do, using images including a drunk girl vomiting in the street and a dog fouling a park.
…
He said the posters were designed to get people to appreciate that their town hall did “a massive amount” with council taxpayers’ money, from policing standards in restaurants to clearing up vomit on the streets.

Is Liberal Stephane Dion no longer a citizen/citoyen of France?
Has Dion given up his dual Canada/France citizenship?
Dion says he is a citizen of the planet, a citizen of Quebec, a citizen of Canada, and a human being to boot.
Dion does not say he is a proud citizen of France.
Is Dion suffering from multiple personality disorder which no longer has a French personality?
…-
Citizen Dion:
“”The sense to be a citizen of the planet has always been, in my case, a strong motivation,” Dion said. “Yes, I’m a proud Quebecer, a proud Canadian, but I’m a human being above all.”
(CanPress)
Why
How come people from Quebec can work in construction wherever they want to in the rest of Canada, but Canadians from the rest of Canada cannot work in construction within Quebec?
How come there are two versions of Canada’s Charter of Rights, one version for Quebec, with another for the rest of Canada?
How come Quebec can have cultural laws (Bill 101) that forbid the unrestricted use of the English language (as well as other languages), while the rest of Canada is forced to embrace all languages and cultures through Trudeau’s vision of multiculturalism for Canada (with the exception of Quebec)?
Why is there an Official Languages Commission, when its only mandate is to promote the use of the French language outside of Quebec?
How come English is so taboo in Quebec, that even bilingual ‘Anglos’ can’t get jobs in Quebec’s civil service (less than 1%) with almost one fifth (nearly 20%) of Quebec’s population being non-French?
At the same time, why is it that the federal government employs close to 35% French speakers in Canada’s civil service, when less than 3% of the Canadian population outside of Quebec is French speaking?
Why is it that Quebec has been recognized by Ottawa to be a Nation?
Why does Quebec have the right to operate its own immigration service and is recognized as having nation-to-nation status with members of the Francophonie?
Why is it that a poverty province like Quebec, which is funded primarily by Ontario and Alberta has such an enormous influence on national and foreign policies?
The TO Star finally has an item running (Sunday) on the CHRC/Macleans/CIC issue re the dismissal of filing.
Long overdue and perhaps a sign that the most under-reported story of the year is about to surface.
Let’s see if the MSMs have the guts to run the comments apparently attributed to Awan that even if we lose, we win…. and on it goes – pretty much laying out what really seems to be behind all of these filings. (See Five Feet of Fury).
The free ride so far by HRC complainants and the HRCs themselves is akin to a roller coaster slowly but surely making its way to the top. However, once headed down the track, it makes for a great ride.
Hopefully the ride is about to get a whole lot rougher on those who have been/still are perverting the quasi-judicial bodies for their own narrow interests.
The Gazette (Montreal) on Saturday put the story about Maclean’s being cleared on page A16 (one long paragraph). Typical.

“A new paper published by the Astronomical Society of Australia has a warning to global warming believers not immediately obvious from the summary:
Based on our claim that changes in the Sun’s equatorial rotation rate are synchronized with changes in the Sun’s orbital motion about the barycentre, we propose that the mean period for the Sun’s meridional flow is set by a Synodic resonance between the flow period (~22.3 yr), the overall 178.7-yr repetition period for the solar orbital motion, and the 19.86-yr synodic period of Jupiter and Saturn.
Or as one of the authors, Ian Wilson, kindly explained to me:
It supports the contention that the level of activity on the Sun will significantly diminish sometime in the next decade and remain low for about 20 – 30 years. On each occasion that the Sun has done this in the past the World’s mean temperature has dropped by ~ 1 – 2 C.
Oh. Global cooling coming, then. Obvious, really.”

“Lawmakers urge CO2 cut targets for rich nations
TOKYO, June 29 (Reuters) – Lawmakers from G8 rich countries and five emerging economies including China agreed on Sunday that developed countries should pledge to cut CO2 emissions by 25-40 percent by 2020.
They said developed countries should commit to reducing by at least 60-80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050 and called on poorer countries to do their bit by taking “appropriate” national actions, in a framework being negotiated to fight global warming after 2012.
The proposal will be passed to G8 summit host Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda.
Climate change is high on the agenda for the July 7-9 Group of Eight (G8) summit at Lake Toya in Hokkaido, northern Japan. Fukuda hopes to build momentum for U.N.-led talks on a framework for after the Kyoto Protocol’s first phase ends in 2012.
G8 leaders agreed last year to consider a global goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent by 2050. Climate campaigners say this year’s summit should go further by endorsing that goal and linking it to bold mid-term targets for developed countries.”

What is Paul Ehrlich up to now*?
…-
“MSM Shuns Embarrassing ‘The Population Bomb’ Anniversary
Today is the official publication date of The Dominant Animal: Human Evolution and the Environment by Paul and Anne Ehrlich. The release of this book was timed to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the publication of Paul Ehrlich’s once exceedingly popular “The Population Bomb” in 1968. If you expect to see much about either of these books in the mainstream media, you are in for a big disappointment. The MSM is avoiding the whole subject of Paul Ehrlich and his apocalyptic “The Population Bomb” like the plague nowadays. The reason is probably because it might draw embarrassing attention to the fact that apocalyptic visions, despite their popularity at one time such as the current global warming alarmism, are usually proven to be flat out wrong. Such was the case with Paul Ehrlich’s “The Population Bomb” which the Intercollegiate Studies Institute ranked as one of the 50 Worst Books of the 20th century due to its many errors. Here are some BrothersJudd.Com book review excerpts of The Population Bomb:”

“How come people from Quebec can work in construction wherever they want to in the rest of Canada, but Canadians from the rest of Canada cannot work in construction within Quebec?”
That reminds me: A decade or two ago, the Supreme Court upheld a Quebec mandatory unionism law (exact details escape me) on the grounds of (get this) “freedom of association does not include the right not to associate” and “the law violates the Charter of Rights but is saved as a reasonable limit under section 1 because it was designed to ameliorate union violence in Quebec” (I’m paraphrasing). In other words, riot and demonstrate and you’ll get whatever you want.
And the right to freedom of association includes, by definition, the right not to associate. Otherwise all the laws against stalking and harassment would be unconstitutional.
One of the most cowardly and thoughtless SCC decisions ever.
