Steyn, At The Fraser Institute

This is my first ever speech in Vancouver. And, amazingly enough, it’s also my last ever speech in Vancouver. So it’s kind of a two-for-one night. It’s like when they say “Direct from Broadway. Limited engagement.” This is a very limited engagement. The reason for that is, next Monday, the excerpt from my bestselling hate crime, America Alone, that Maclean’s made the mistake of publishing, next Monday that book excerpt goes on trial at the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal. As some of you know, the Canadian Islamic Congress has accused me and Maclean’s of “flagrant Islamophobia”. And the trial begins Monday morning at the Robson Square courthouse – 9 o’clock Monday morning. Go to Robson Square and look for the old lady by the guillotine doing her knitting, you can’t miss it. She’s knitting a nice “The World Needs More Canada” sweater out of discarded copies of Magna Carta. It’s a very moving sight. It would have, of course, be wholly improper of me to comment on a case before the courts, but hey, that’s the kinda guy I am.

I’ll provide a link to the whole thing when I find one. In the meantime, you can read other portions here.

  1. In light of the BC Supremes standing up for the rights of drug abusers(who are wrecking their bodies at our expense) and Steyn’s very eloquent ‘picture word’ here, makes me wonder where is the Canada that I love. What the heck is going on..?
    Come soon Lord Jesus!

  2. Steyn will lose in BC, I don’t see how they can let him walk without losing face. That’s when the real shite is gonna hit the fan. IMHO.

  4. Kelly is probably right. But, essentially banning a world renown author’s publications in Canada as the consequence could start a firestorm that burns down their cozy Stalinesque tribunal gig. I’m sure they are very busy going through old USSR archives trying to figure out how to fully punish Steyn as an Enemy of the State and yet not completely go too crazy creating headlines across NA and Europe.
It’s tougher on Marxist fascists now days, more nuance and PR considerations are required.
Here’s hoping the damn fools fall on their swords. Going after a guy of Mark Steyn’s stature was real, real stupid.

  5. Oh Canada we mourn for thee. As bluetech point out the BC Surpreme Court has ruled that the Charter now guarentees state provided and funded free shoot-up sites for druggies. This along with all the unbelievable things about these kangaroo tribunals surfacing these days indicates a total loss of common sense and how as a country we have lost our moral compass altogether.

  6. Why are we not out in the streets demanding the CHRC’s be totally and immediately shut down, made null and void? They are a slap in the face to our guaranteed freedom of speech and are making a mockery of what we call ourselves, a democracy.
How can we blame Steyn for residing in the US when our freedoms are being eroded by these Commie inspired kangaroo courts?
The Harper government will have to move on this and fast, these commissions of commissars do not fit with our system of governance.

  7. kelly,
Respectfully, I disagree with your opinion that Steyn will lose his case. I suspect that the commission will find some way to throw out the cases against Steyn, and likewise probably the Alberta commission will throw out the case against Ezra Levant. The hacks who work at these commissions have sinecures to protect, and Steyn/Levant are articulate critics that pose a threat to their positions and status. It’s the average Joe that I’m more concerned for, people that don’t have the resources, either financial or intellectual, that Steyn and Levant have.

  8. I agree with Dave. If the hrc’s ban Steyn’s book, there will be a scream heard across Canada that will alarm the deafest of politicians. There will be social unrest that will not be quelled by lip service from the politicians. Canadians are nice polite people, but they are getting sick of their rights being trampled on, by a herd of backward barbaric no nothings.

  9. they can’t find mark steyn guilty of anything unless damn good book is a crime.

  10. I don’t like to second-guess the BCHRC, but it’s obvious that they intended to convict Steyn. They don’t have to accept complaints that are plainly without merit, as this one is. They wouldn’t be hearing it if they hadn’t decided to get him. This is the accepted modus operandi of the human rights industry; they pick their targets and take them down.
Now, whether they will be intimidated into changing their minds is the question. I doubt that they have the sense. Indeed, I doubt that they feel in any way threatened. They’re too used to doing the threatening. And in fact there is zero indication that anybody with any authority has any plans to do anything to them. The fact that there’s public opposition just encourages them: why, those damned racist white people don’t want it, so we’re gonna give it to them!
They’ll convict. It’s up to us to ensure that that proves to be a fatal mistake on their part.

  11. Wow! We Americans are not far behind you. For instance, it is apparently not possible for our press to ask the silver tongued Obama a tough question.
