  1. Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your weekend dancing delectation, here is Claudio Abbado conducting the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra performing Johann Strauss’s Freikugeln Polka, op. 326. It’s only 2:30, and I do think you will very much like the ending. Now that’s a polka! There’s no way you could pull off that ending on a waltz.

  2. Just started watching an old CSI, and guess what they are looking for, a severed foot. EERIE.

  3. MaryT, this type of story makes me wonder if there aren’t some morbid mortuary jokesters/Frankensteiners floating flotsam just for sociological/media impact.
Remember that those who study society sometimes enjoy creating odd situations “just to see how people respond” (kind of like a kid observing how ants act when s/he tortures them*). In many ways, this type of behaviour is VERY strange in that it causes something to happen and then feeds-off the reaction.
If things go bad as a result of the experiment, it can always be said, “I was just testing/checking/validating my hypothesis, no harm, no foul.” Or even better, “It was just a joke”.
If the gambit succeeds, bonanza! If it fails, slink back and claim it was all in the name of research, exploration or whimsy. How can one possibly lose with that approach/excuse/justification?
*I do not advocate the torture of ants.

  4. Vitruvius: I would expect that kind of ending…in the climax of a Bugs Bunny cartoon!
    Great piece.

  6. Angry Landowners from across the province have responded to the McGuinty Government’s Endangered Species Act by committing to clear-cut 24,754 acres of rural land that – under the new legislation – would be in danger of being classified as ”species habitat”.
To give some idea of the amount of land involved, all the parkland in Metro Toronto amounts to only 73 km². “This is quite a milestone” said OLA President Jack MacLaren, “and Mr. McGuinty can take a bow, because he is responsible for it”
MacLaren estimates that perhaps 40 km² have already been cleared and he thinks that the rest of the land will be cleared in the few months ahead.

GREENBELT DIRECTORS DIRECTING TAX-DOLLARS TO THEIR OWN ORG’S– LANDOWNERS DEMAND McGUINTY HOLD INQUIRY
    Carleton County, 14 April 2008
The Ontario Landowners’ Association (OLA) is demanding that the McGuinty Government set up an enquiry to look into the dispersal of $25 million of provincial funding by the GTA Greenbelt Commission.
In a recent article that appeared in Ontario Farmer, journalist Ian Cumming revealed that many of the Greenbelt directors and advisors also represent agencies that have derived huge sums of public money from the multi-million dollar provincial funding of the Greenbelt.
The Executive Director of Environmental Defence, Rick Smith, is a Greenbelt Director and his organization received $600,000 from the $10 million that has already been spent from the tax-payer funded slush-fund. The Executive Director of Ontario Nature, Caroline Schultz, is another Greenbelt Director and her group netted $235,000. The Executive Producer of the Royal Winter Fair, William Duron, is a Greenbelt director and the Fair got $600,000 over three years.
The OLA rejects the claim by Greenbelt Foundation President, Burkhard Mausberg, that the conflict of interest was necessary in order to have “the best possible people.”
“He’s defending the indefensible.” replied OLA director Jamie MacMaster. “There’s an old farm test for sour milk that can be used as an ethics tool: if it looks bad, and it smells bad, don’t swallow it no matter what anyone tells you. What do you think the average Canadian would think about this situation? A group of NGOs lobby long and hard for the creation of a Greenbelt. When it is formed, the directors of these various NGOs also become directors of the Greenbelt and secure millions in provincial funding. Lo and behold, a huge chunk of that money goes to their respective organizations.”
The Greenbelt Commission notes that there are guidelines in place so that none of the funding can be used for salaries, but Garry Otten, an OLA director from Peterborough County scoffs at the suggestion that this makes things okay. “What a crock. A kid could see through that. If you already have, let’s say, $1 million in the kitty from donations, doesn’t the infusion of another half-million – only for expenses – free up a larger portion of your original million for salaries?”
Otten, says that this should be a wake-up call for residents who see the Greenbelt as an environmental saviour. “And this is the agency that wants to expand its influence? Boy, everyone better take a long, hard look at what’s going on here.”

Leeds-Grenville Landowners Association AGM – an Enthusiastic Fresh Start!
(Attached photo front L to R: Nancy Kehoe, Gill Cyr, Duaine McKinley, Stephen Kirkwood, Carolin Kroot)
The Leeds-Grenville Landowners Association (LGLA) had their Annual General Meeting on March 4 at Spring Valley Hall at Brockville. It was a very enthusiastic meeting attended by 125 people most of whom signed up or renewed their memberships. A draft Constitution was presented to the membership which was accepted by all. Duaine McKinley, the interim president, gave a report on the recent activities and future plans of the LGLA. Shawn Carmichael gave a brief report on how the Upper Canada School Coalition won its fight with the school board to keep three local schools open. This was a big success for Grenville County.
Guest speakers were Jack MacLaren, president of the Ontario Landowners Association (OLA) and Tom Black of the Carleton L.A. They talked about the many OLA battles with government legislations, regulations and bureaucrats that interfer with the ability of Landowners to use, enjoy and profit from their property.
Jeff Bogaerts, president of the Lanark Landowners Association, convened the elections for a new executive and board of directors. The following people were elected:
    President: Duaine McKinley ph: 613 926 2372 mckinley@ripnet.com

“24,000 acres of Habitat denied to McGuinty”
    DEMOCRACY DENIED!
    ——————————————————————————–
Today, the Ontario Landowners Association blockaded the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority offices in Ottawa to protest the absolute disregard for the democratic process that elected Merle Bowes and Terry Hale, members of the Ontario Landowners Association, to the Mississippi-Rideau Source Protection Committee. The purpose of this committee is to enforce the regulations of the Clean Water Act.
Merle and Terry have been rejected solely because they are members of the Ontario Landowners Association.
This is a rejection of the Ontario Landowners Association and a rejection of the democratic process.
These are injustices that we will not accept.
Until Merle Bowes and Terry Hale have been reinstated to their rightful positions as members of the MRSPC, the properties of OLA members will be posted and conservation authority employees will denied access without informed consent.
A similar situation exists in Huron County where John Van der Burgt was rejected by the Ausable-Maitland Source Protection Committee. We demand that he be reinstated as well.

Why are rural landowners under attack?
Why are rural landowners under attack? Why do we need property rights entrenched in our Constitution? Here is the government’s plan and strategy to attack rural landowners and their economy. TAKING our land-For their use.
People often believe that governments are benevolent and have our best interests at heart when they pass legislation: and that the failings of government policy and legislation are the result of poor implementation or their lack of knowledge and competence. The Vancouver declaration proves they are both neither benevolent, nor incompetent, only deceptive. This declaration provides the bureaucratic rational for collecting data regarding your land and then using that data to change your ownership rights. Read more http://habitat.igc.org/vancouver/vp-a.htm
The second step of the plan was concluded with the repatriation of the Canadian constitution that omitted property rights from the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, but included collective & minority rights. Read the Charter at http://laws.justice.gc.ca/en/charter/
The third step is the abolition and modification to existing water use rights as outlined in the 1989 UN Charter on Ground Water Management that Canada signed onto. Read more http://www.internationalwaterlaw.org/

  8. Border officials may seize iPods under trade deal
OTTAWA – The federal government is secretly negotiating a copyright agreement that could make some information on Canadian iPods, laptop computers or other personal electronic devices illegal.

Federal trade agreements do not require parliamentary approval.
The deal would create an international regulator that could turn border guards and other public security personnel into copyright police. The security officials would be charged with checking laptops, iPods and even cellular phones for content that “infringes” on copyright laws, such as ripped CDs and movies.
The guards would also be responsible for determining what is infringing content and what is not.

  10. Tor. Star has tragic story of a mother of four who returned to Egypt for a year to raise her children in a more Islamic environment and then found when she returned to her home in Toronto that her husband had taken the opportunity to marry two more wives.
“I cried for six days straight. Lost my appetite, ignored the kids, even had to start taking antidepressants,” said Rigby, 35. “What I couldn’t understand was how such a thing could happen in Toronto, my hometown, where polygamy is supposed to be illegal.”
It was easy. He simply found an imam willing to break a Canadian law, in exchange for upholding an Islamic one.
“Polygamy is happening in Toronto; it’s not common, but it’s happening,” said Hindy, imam at Salahuddin Islamic Centre.
Hindy, hardly a stranger to controversy, is well known for his friendship with the family of Omar Khadr, the young Canadian detainee at Guantanamo Bay, and his outspoken views on the implementation of Islamic law. In the past five years, Hindy said he has officiated or “blessed” more than 30 polygamous marriages; the most recent was two months ago. Even some imams in the GTA have second wives, he added.
“This is in our religion and nobody can force us to do anything against our religion,” he said. “If the laws of the country conflict with Islamic law, if one goes against the other, then I am going to follow Islamic law, simple as that.”

Did you (or they) mean 75 acres or 75 hectares of greenland in Toronto? 75 km2 is awfully big.

  14. Muslim polygamy is breaking the law. But they don’t honour our law.
This is why there’s a disproportionate number of Muslims in western prison systems. In France, Muslims account for 5% of the general population, yet 50% of the prison population; 70% in Spain and similar percentages throughout Europe.
These people have contempt for our ‘man made’ laws, honouring Allah’s Sharia law only. Polygamy may not be a crime that violently effects others, but don’t worry, given that the government is doing nothing about it, they’ll move on to commit more and more violent crimes against Canadian kaffirs, as their numbers increase. This is their M/O.
Under shariah, there is no penalty for killing a kaffir, or raping the women.

  16. This ‘Letter of Apology’ was written by Lieutenant General Chuck Pitman, US Marine Corps, Retired:
For good and ill, the Iraqi prisoner abuse mess will remain an issue. On the one hand, right thinking Americans will abhor the stupidity of the actions while on the other hand, political glee will take control and fashion this minor event into some modern day massacre.
I humbly offer my opinion here:
I am sorry that the last seven times we Americans took up arms and sacrificed the blood of our youth; it was in the defense of Muslims (Bosnia , Kosovo, Gulf War 1, Kuwait , etc.)
I am sorry that no such call for an apology upon the extremists came after 9/11.
I am sorry that all of the murderers on 9/11 were Islamic Arabs.
I am sorry that most Arabs and Muslims have to live in squalor under savage dictatorships.
I am sorry that their leaders squander their wealth.
I am sorry that their governments breed hate for the US in their religious schools, mosques, and government-controlled media.
    ….
I am sorry that voters on the liberal left don’t understand the frightening changes that are taking place in the Muslim world and what these changes will do to this world in which we live.
I am sorry that the Democratic Party has been high-jacked by Socialists and Communists right under the very noses of those who take pride in calling themselves democrats.

Deep down inside, when most Americans saw this reported in the news, we were like – so what? We lost hundreds and made fun of a few prisoners. Sure, it was wrong, sure, it dramatically hurts our cause, but until captured we were trying to kill these same prisoners. Now we’re supposed to wring our hands because a few were humiliated?
Our compassion is tempered with the vivid memories of our own people killed, mutilated and burnt amongst a joyous crowd of celebrating Fallujahans.
If you want an apology from this American, you’re going to have a long wait! You have a better chance of finding those seventy-two virgins.

This story could also be a “cover story”.
    …-
“Titanic search was Cold War cover story for secret mission to find nuclear subs
A mission to find the lost wreck of the Titanic was actually a cover story for inspecting the wrecks of two nuclear submarines, the man who discovered the famous liner has revealed.
Dr Bob Ballard led a team in 1985 that pinpointed the wreckage of the enormous ship 73 years after it sank in the Atlantic. But he almost didn’t succeed after his top secret mission to find two Cold War subs left him with just 12 days to find the Titanic.
The United States Navy lost two submarines during the 1960s – the USS Thresher and USS Scorpion – which had more than 200 men on board.
Officials feared at least one of them had been sunk by the USSR. When Dr Ballard approached the Navy for funding to find the Titanic using his robotic submarine craft, they asked him to discover the submarines first.
“I couldn’t tell anybody,” the oceanographer said.
“There was a lot of pressure on me. It was a secret mission. I felt it was a fair exchange for getting a chance to look for the Titanic.”
He added: “We handed the data to the experts. They never told us what they concluded – our job was to collect the data. I can only talk about it now because it has been declassified.””

KOBE, Japan – The world is losing momentum in the battle against global warming, the U.N. climate chief warned on Saturday, urging environmental ministers from wealthy nations to revive the effort by setting clear targets for reducing greenhouse gases.
The ministers gathered in the western Japanese city of Kobe for a three-day meeting as evidence mounted that rising world temperatures have been taking a toll on the earth at a faster rate than previously forecast.
The officials from the Group of Eight countries, joined by representatives from other countries including China and other organizations, were to lay the foundations for the upcoming G8 summit in northern Japan in July.
U.N. climate chief Yvo de Boer told the Associated Press on the sidelines that he was concerned about stalling momentum behind international talks to forge a global warming pact by December 2009 to succeed the Kyoto Protocol. Its first phase ends in 2012.
“Much of the enthusiasm and ambition that we saw in Bali with the launch of negotiations doesn’t seem to be present,” he said, referring to a meeting on the Indonesian resort island in December, when some 190 countries decided on a timetable for talks on the new climate pact.”

No one thought to tell senior city managers, the mayor or public health when almost a million cubic meters of raw sewage flowed into the Ottawa river.
This was the same summer Petrie Island Beach was closed for over 40 days.
O’Brien says the mandate is wide open from who knew what, when, about the sewage spill, to a review of the procedural changes planned and the ones already in place.
The mayor says the city manager is in favour of the review but the two don’t agree on whether someone could end up losing their job over the foul up.
O’Brien says the mandate will be more wide reaching than that of the auditor general.
The name of the investigator, timeline and budget will be released next week.”

“Rock Star: ‘The Whole Joke of Live Earth Was How Wasteful It Was’
The May 29 edition of Rolling Stone looks ahead to the summer concert season, and the rock-music mag is praising the Dave Matthews Band for their use of biodiesel for buses and “biodegradable goods for catering.” But this exchange was interesting, about Al Gore’s “Live Earth” concerts.
ROLLING STONE: Some people argue that the live experience is sort of inherently “un-green.”
DAVE MATTHEWS: There’s no doubt that it is. The whole joke of Live Earth was how wasteful it was.”

    “Retrospective
Peter Bergen and Paul Cruickshank at the New Republic describe The jihadist revolt against bin Laden. It begins, as most of these stories do, with rich men at a lavish party who sit down after dinner to plot how to take over the world. In this case it begins with a millionaire Libyan Jihadi and Osama Bin Laden in Kandahar. A participant describes the scene in 2000, when most of the West was celebrating the End of History and worrying about the Millenium Bug.”

  28. In August 1961 Joe Kittinger became the first person in space, in a balloon instead of a rocket. He subsequently parachuted down from a height of 102800 feet, a record that has stod until today. On Monday morning in North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Michel Fournier is going to attempt “Le Grand Saut” (the big jump), by parachuting from 130 thousand feet, shattering Kittinger’s nearly half-century-old record:
