Eliot Mess*

* h/t to commentor Neo for the most excellent post title suggestion.
New York Governor Eliot Spitzer is reported to be resigning from his office later today;

Gov. Eliot Spitzer has told senior advisers that he had been involved in a prostitution ring, The New York Times reported Monday, citing an anonymous top administration official. […] The Times reported that a person with knowledge of the governor’s role believes the governor is identified as a client in court papers. Four people allegedly connected to a high-end prostitution ring called Emperors Club VIP were arrested last week.
Spitzer, 48, built his political legacy on rooting out corruption, including several headline-making battles with Wall Street while serving as attorney general. He stormed into the governor’s office in 2006 with a historic share of the vote, vowing to continue his no- nonsense approach to fixing one of the nation’s worst governments.
Time magazine had named him “Crusader of the Year” when he was attorney general and the tabloids proclaimed him “Eliot Ness.”
But his stint as governor has been marred by several problems, including an unpopular plan to grant driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants and a plot by his aides to smear Spitzer’s main Republican nemesis.

In my opinion, it was the driver’s license fiasco that should have brought him down. But this will do.
Update: Commentors have already noted that a certain detail has been overlooked in this report and others – Spitzer’s party affiliation.
Update 2: The fastest purge in political history. That and other links are collecting at Hot Air.
Update 3!

As a sidebar to an article at ABC news about Elliott Spitzer, they’ve helpfully put together this slideshow of 13 politicians involved in famous sex scandals.(Collect them all!) Anyway, it’s rather interesting that of the 7 Republicans on the list, all of them save one are identified by ABC as Republicans. Of the six Democrats on the list, only one is identified by party affiliation.

  2. Well at least Eliot will have a calm and supporting family to get him through these trials.
Um, maybe not. Silda is gonna be pissed.

  3. The driver’s license, in my opinion, is the key culpability.
The prostitution – that’s between him, his family and the prostitutes. Especially when one reads that they charge anywhere from 1,000 to 5,000 per hour.
Oh, and in this afternoon’s new’s conference, he didn’t resign.
He should resign – over the drivers licenses to illegals.

  4. Sentinal,
I believe the term is “small-town cheap.”
    Porter,
You’re an ass. I’m sure you don’t comprehend simple concepts but there is a difference between Legal immigrants and illegal ones. Legal immigrants are allowed to be where they are and should be getting jobs and illegals should be going home. But you miss that sort of “nuance” as you are a twit.

  5. Ha! Spitzer followed the example set by Rudy Giuliani in the abuse of the prosecutor’s office to advance his political career!
That should have been the reason he went down!
“Legal scholar and law school dean Henry Manne has shown (Wall St. Journal, 1-8-04) that prosecutor Eliot Spitzer’s charges against mutual funds are largely trumped-up. The offenses are partly the unintended result of a Security and Exchange Commission “reform,” which capped redemption fees that mutual funds used to discourage market timers.
Prosecutor Spitzer’s claims about mutual funds are based, not on law, but on an academic paper written at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business. In other words, the prosecutor has a “theory.” Professor Manne has shown the academic paper to be incorrect. What we are witnessing is a mutual fund witch-hunt based on an incorrect academic theory.
And Americans think they live under a rule of law!
No doubt some mutual fund managers exercised bad judgment and some may have broken some rules. But Spitzer’s ambition has blown the cases out of proportion. We certainly do not want to criminalize bad judgment. ”

  6. ET:
Normally I would agree that his prostitution practises are between him and his family.
EXCEPT that he built his career, in part, by prosecuting prostitution rings. Goes to credibility, your honour.

If I’m an ass then you can kiss me.
Do you really think that I don’t know what the difference is between illegal and legal immigrants? Here’s my point: I don’t care.

  8. Seeing as how none of the MSM bothered to report it, I assumed he must be a democrat. I was right.

  9. Of course he’s a democrat…because hypocrisy is an inherent trait of being a liberal…

  10. Surprise, surprise! The AP article Kate linked to did NOT mention Spitzer’s political affiliation. Just what one comes to expect from the lame stream media. If he was a Republican, it would have been in the headline and first sentence.

  11. MSM Reading guide:
    o “Republican” = Republican e.g. The Republican Senator….
    o ” ” = Democrat e.g. The Governor of NY…..

  12. See there’s the unfairness – If they allowed him to pass out the illegal drivers licenses to illegals, he could have had the prostitute drive herself/ himself to his place. Damned Republicans!

  13. Silly spitzer, he should have claimed he was trying to solicit *gay* sex.
Then he could have been hailed as hero.

  14. robert s. porter – if you don’t care about the distinction between legal and illegal immigrants, that means that you don’t care about the rule of law. Why not?
rabbit – yes, I see your point.

  15. “Do you really think that I don’t know what the difference is between illegal and legal immigrants? Here’s my point: I don’t care.”
Then you presumably wouldn’t care if I came to live in your house, eat your food, watch your TV, etc.
    Where do you live?

  16. A three-year-old boy was examining his testicles while taking a bath.
Mom” he asked, “Are these my brains?”
    Not yet.” she replied

  17. Robert S. Porter>
“Yes, because as soon as illegal immigrants get drivers licences then they’ll start getting jobs! Jobs meant for white guys like me!”
Actually that’s not entirely true unless you clean toilets or drive a taxi for a living. But indeed they are taking jobs away from legal Mexican immigrants looking for a better life.
Or Liberals looking to break out of social welfare dependance.

  18. I don’t think this will upset the far leftoids, their mantra is anything goes if you enjoy it. Ergo he’s really a victim of NeoCon ideology, poor lad had to pay for it didn’t he. Sarcasism off. I think the far left call a night with a hooker a date, just joking.

  19. Someone tell me how a governor can afford $1000 to $5500 per hour for these services? Prior to being governor he was the AG. Very few people on the public payroll, top job or not can afford this kind of expense. I suspect there’s more to this than meets the eye. Hopefully someone digs it up.

  20. This story is “reported” at the G&M website. Of course, they are allowing no comments. And, of course the fact that this guy is a Democrat is studiously avoided. They do manage, however, to get a couple of references in with respect to Republican members. The bias and dishonesty is unbelievable.

  21. John Luft, re the left, I don’t use the word “inbelievable” any more: unfortunately, most of the rotten things they do are all TOO believable.
Whenever I’m about to say “unbelievable”, I substitute “reprehensible”. What a sorry lot these lefties are. Unfortunately, we all suffer from their depredations.

  22. Spurter or Spitzer or whatever his name is, is a big-time Clinton supporter.
I wonder if that will affect her in the nomination battle.
    Spritzer= Whoremaster= Billy BJ’s pecadillos= Whoremaster=Clinton hanging with sexually obsessed men.
    One can only hope.

  23. Facts about Eliot Spitzer
    Reuters
    March 10, 2008 at 3:41 PM EDT
Following are some facts about New York Governor Eliot Spitzer.
    * Mr. Spitzer, a first-term Democrat who pledged to bring ethics reform, has been married to Silda Wall Spitzer since 1987, and they have three daughters.
    * He is a superdelegate who has pledged to support Hillary Clinton in her campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination.
    * Mr. Spitzer prosecuted at least two prostitution rings as head of the state’s organized crime task force, The New York Times said.
prosecution or prostitution, he needs Bill Clinton to turn a phrase for him. say he didnt know what he was getting into , nudge nudge wink wink.
how can he afford 3100 an hour , ask the Obamas the cost of raising just two daughters , what with dance lessons and all.

  24. “Then you presumably wouldn’t care if I came to live in your house, eat your food, watch your TV, etc.”
Yes because a private dwelling is that same thing as a country. A country isn’t and shouldn’t be something that the citizens think they “own” and thus can keep Mexicans out of.
“robert s. porter – if you don’t care about the distinction between legal and illegal immigrants, that means that you don’t care about the rule of law. Why not?”
I do not care for laws that are unjust and immoral.

  25. How one hippie feminist got bamboozled by Spitzer:
    “January 4, 2007
    Happy New Year!
and Happy New Government if you live in New York state. On January first I was invited by our new governor, Eliot Spitzer to perform a free concert for thousands of his supporters after he publicly took the oath of office on the steps of the capitol building in Albany. Eliot Spitzer is a young (47), dynamic, progressive Democrat with eight years of experience as New York’s Attorney General. His numerous suits filed on behalf of the citizens of New York against powerful interests (commodities brokers, insurance companies, communication conglomerates, energy companies and health professionals involved in Medicaid fraud) have won landmark victories for consumers and earned him titles like, “The Sheriff of Wall Street” and “The People’s Lawyer”.
I normally don’t associate myself with particular politicians for fear that traces of corruption will eventually appear but I feel certain that Mr. Spitzer’s character is of the highest integrity and honesty. I’m looking forward to the next six years.”

  26. “I’m looking forward to the next six years.”
According to the 6 o’clock news, so is Eliot Spitzer. No indication in his public speech that he has nay intention of resigning. In fact, his speech pretty much followed the standard liberal script – I apologize for embarrassing my family and not living up to my stratospherically high standards. As for the rest of you, ideology is more important than actions. I screwed the pooch – get over yourself.

  27. robert porter – could you explain why laws of private property are ‘unjust and immoral’. That is, why you are in favour of anyone walking in off the street and living in your house, eating your food etc. Do you keep your house open to everyone?
Could you explain why it is unjust and immoral to require a legal process to immigrate to a country?

  28. Someone tell me how a governor can afford $1000 to $5500 per hour for these services?
OK, I’ll bite. By being a millionaire before becoming AG.
The thing Spritzer is pissing himself about is conspiring to move a person between states for the purpose of prostitution which violates a federal law and carries a penalty of up to twenty years. His job, not so much.

The MSM is reporting it and does mention his affiliation.
Your irony is subtle, kevink. Here is a copy-and paste from the article you linked to; this is the one and only reference to Democrat, the only reference to party affiliation, in the NINTH paragraph.
‘Spitzer also did not address reports that he was expected to resign, but he promised to expand on his comments later. Were Spitzer to step down, Lt. Gov. David A. Paterson, a fellow Democrat, would become governor.’
You do not REALLY think back-handed reference counts as reporting party affiliation, do you? Look around the MSNBC wed site and see how Republicans have their party affiliation reported. You will find it is just as I said, usually in the headline and first sentence.
But, I guess for the Lame Stream Media like MSNBC, this may well count as ‘reporting’.

  30. Rob SP, so you and Eliot are much alike, you like to flaunt the laws you don’t agree with. He was willing to give drivers licences to illegals who were ordered deported and so apparently are you. So we have to give up the right to check on who is allowed into our country , no more medical screeing, security screening in fact just throw the doors open according to you.
So you are going to take care of all those people with Extreme Drug Resistant TB right, the ones you let in, and the ones with HIV who will overwhelm our medical system, those are OK too right.
So drop the medical bit and get into security screening, is that Osama living next door to you working in the 7-11? Is that a chemical lab he is building in his basement, what is all that white powder blowing around….. You don’t even have to think about Terrorists, just criminals that we should be screening out.
A country with such lax laws on just about every issue cannot afford to allow people who have no respect for the law immigrate here. Unfortunately you already appear to be a citizen….

  31. ET you are feeding a troll. Like someone who is lactose intolertant, no good can come from that. I am much more interested in staying on topic.
What goes on the mind of someone like Spitzer that makes him think he is so “special”? This is the same sort of hubris exhibited by William Jefferson Clinton. Spitzer did not resign, gave a limp apology and had his wife stand there while he did his best imitation of Jimmy Swaggart. The next thing will be him making an attept to give his definition of “Is”. I honestly hope he does some jail time. Martha went down for a hell of a lot less than this.

  32. “A country isn’t and shouldn’t be something that the citizens think they “own” and thus can keep Mexicans out of.”
“scuse me, Bob, but just who does “own” a country? Eg, who “owns” Mexico and do we have the right to go there to live without going through the process of acceptance by mexican authorities who are the representatives of the people who think they “own” Mexico.
How about Saudi Arabia? Zimbabwe? Russia?

  33. Sorry, Brian. Yes, we’re troll feeding – a foolish and irresponsible activity.
One should be sufficiently disciplined to ignore the brain-dead, irrational nonsense posted by dickheads such as porter
