  3. “Berlusconi is target of Islamist death threat,”
by Elisabetta Povoledo for the International Herald Tribune:
ROME: Former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi received an Islamist death threat Friday in a letter containing two bullets that was sent to a newspaper owned by his family’s media empire.
The blank cartridges were “a forewarning” to Berlusconi and his younger brother Paolo, the publisher of Il Giornale, for the Milanese newspaper’s “anti-Islamic” stance, according to the paper’s Web site, which published the letter.
The letter warned that “at the first favorable moment” the Berlusconi brothers would come to the same end as Benazir Bhutto, the Pakistani opposition leader, who was assassinated Dec. 27.
“We will do like they did in Pakistan, with Bhutto: a shot to the head with real bullets and then an Italian-style suicide bomber to make sure that they depart this world,” the letter read.
“Bodyguards and security details will be unable to stop us, because we are unpredictable,” said the letter.
In September 2001, when Berlusconi was prime minister, he inflamed the Muslim world and angered Western diplomats by stating that Western civilization was “superior” to that of Islam.
A spokesman for the police in Milan said its anti-terrorist squad was examining the letter. Prosecutors in Milan will also investigate the incident.

    “Tired and Emotional”
The Huffington Post isn’t one of my regular haunts, but in light of the following perhaps it should be. Behold the bewildered psychodrama of Ms Erica Jong.
I am so tired of pink men bombing brown children and rationalising it as fighting terrorism… I am so tired of pink men spouting nonsense on TV. I am so tired of pink men arguing, blathering, bloviating, predicting the future – usually wrongly – and telling women to shut up. I am so sick of hearing that another pink man has dropped his children out a window, off a bridge or killed his pregnant wife or killed his unpregnant wife because he was infatuated with another pregnant woman. I am so sick of pink men making war and talking about peace… Don’t tell me about women who kill. I know there are some – but fewer. So let’s just remember our mothers – who bore us, protected us against our fathers and grandfathers and all the pink or brown men who wanted to rape us or kill us or starve us because we were girls.
This measured yet devastating critique is followed by,
    I am not stupid.

I know all generalisations are false.

Science chief: greens hurting climate fight
The scientist credited as being the first to convince Tony Blair of the urgency of the climate crisis has accused green activists of being Luddites who risk setting back the fight against global warming.
In an interview with the Guardian today Sir David King, who stepped down last month after seven years as the government’s chief scientific adviser, says any approach that does not focus on technological solutions to climate change – including nuclear power – is one of “utter hopelessness”.
He says: “There is a suspicion, and I have that suspicion myself, that a large number of people who label themselves ‘green’ are actually keen to take us back to the 18th or even the 17th century.”
He characterises their argument as “let’s get away from all the technological gizmos and developments of the 20th century”.
“People say ‘well, we’ll just use less energy.’ Come on,” he says. “And then there’s the real world, where everyone is aspiring to the sort of standard of living that we have, which is based on a large energy consumption.” …-

…The 450 rolls of film had been assembled before the war for a bold venture: a study of the evolution of the Quran, the text Muslims view as the verbatim transcript of God’s word…
The revived Quran venture plays into a very modern debate: how to reconcile Islam with the modern world? Academic quarrying of the Quran has produced bold theories, bitter feuds and even claims of an Islamic Reformation in the making. Applying Western critical methods to Islam’s holiest text is a sensitive test of the Muslim community’s readiness to both accommodate and absorb thinking outside its own traditions.

Shiite, Sunni political blocs sign pact to maintain Iraq’s unity
BAGHDAD, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) — Some of Iraq’s Shiite and Sunni parliamentary blocs signed on Sunday an understanding aimed at protecting the country’s unity and stressing central control over oil reserves.
“These are political blocs which oppose the oil wealth be out of the control of the central government and have their own point of view toward the future of Kirkuk,” Salih al-Mutlak, head of the Iraqi National Dialogue Front, told Xinhua.
The blocs will guarantee the majority in the 270-seat parliament, said Mutlak, a secular Sunni, referring to a statement of common understanding signed by the blocs in the afternoon.
Among the blocs which signed the statement are Salih’ bloc, the movement of radical Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, the Iraqi National List of former prime minister Ayad Allawi, two of the three parties that form the Iraqi Accordance Front of Adana al-Dulaimi, the Shiite Fadhilah Party and Islamic Daawa Party, to which Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki belongs, Mutlak said.
The statement said that the blocs pledged to work together in the parliament to stress on higher national interest and to maintain the unity of the country away from sectarian and divisions, according to Mutlak.
The pact demanded that the country’s natural resources, including the oil and gas should remain under the control of the central government, he said. …-

  21. Probably very few people watched Muslim Insight with Imam Syed Soharwardy (6:30 a.m. today on the Crossroads Christian channel) about the special status of Jesus Christ, “PBUH”, in Islam. Too bad. Whatever one may think of the imam’s conduct in bringing the HRC complaint against Ezra Levant, he’s a capable preacher.
It may surprise some that the good imam is praying fervently for the Second Coming. Also, badmouthing Jesus or the Virgin Mary (who merits her own chapter, sura 19, in the Koran) is an insult to Islam, akin to picking on Mohammed. However, Soharwardy reiterated that the duty to defend Islam against insults must be discharged nonviolently and in accordance with Canadian law (hence the HRC complaint, I guess).

  22. The thing I don’t get about “black focused schools” in Ontario, is that about 10 seconds prior to this coming up as a possibility, Ontario had just voted against the provincial Conservatives because of their promotion of funding “religious based schools”. All good progressives were against funding faith based schools, but were right on board with the virtues of “black focused” schools.
How about people get vouchers and parents can send their kids to whatever kind of school they want (all students having to pass provincial standards). A little competition in the education sphere would be a good thing. If black focused or faith based schools can attract students and graduate kids who are successful members of society, then they will survive. Let the market take care of it.

  23. ex-liberal – that’s a very astute comment, ie, that the Liberals/left in Ontario are all for ‘black-based schools’ but were fervently against ‘faith-based schools’. I wonder what their explanation would be?
charles macdonald – the definition of an ‘insult’ is subjective and can’t be the subject of a law. Furthermore, to insist that key axioms/persona of a religion are not open to discussion and critique sets up the religion as dogma rather than one based on faith and reason (see Pope Benedict’s argument for both).
And yes, Salim Mansur’s Toronto Sun column on the legacy of Bush’s introduction of democracy to the ME, was very good.

  24. Dion and Iggy went to Afghanistan. Did they enjoy the protection of the Canadian soldiers or did they put on their little backpacks and wander off on their own like they would have the weaker members of Afghan society do? They wouldn’t have wanted soldiers with guns protecting them and taking time away from reconstruction and other ‘roles’, would they?
C’mon Dion and Iggy, do us all a favour and show us how it’s done. Let’s see that much vaunted soft power in action.

  25. “Imam Syed Soharwardy (6:30 a.m. today on the Crossroads Christian channel) about the special status of Jesus Christ, “PBUH”, in Islam.”
Meanwhile the desecration of Churches and the murdering of Christians continues throughtout the Islamic world.
This ‘Imam’ is nothing more than another hissing snake.
Islam calls Jesus, Isa, which is not his name. ‘Isa’ in Arabic is Esau, therefore not the same person. At the time of Mo, they spoke mostly Aramaic and Syriac. Yahshua in Arabic (a language constructed far after Mo’s death) is Yasuwah, or Yasu.
Also, Allah is the old Arabic Moon-god and the head of a pantheon of 365 gods. That’s why they say ‘Allah Akbar’ meaning Allah is the greatest (greater than what? The other gods, of course). Sin, has the title of “al-ilah,” meaning “the deity,” the chief or high god of the Arabs. This was shortened to Allah in pre-Islamic times. The Holy land of Sin was “Sinai,” the “wilderness of Sin.”
This Imam is simply practicing the Islamic specialty of confusion and deception.

  26. Actually, OMMAG, if you check out the demographic for French Immersion you will likely find the de facto WASP enclave. Sort of private school without the fees or the affirmative action policies.

  27. And Jesus is NOT divine, and at the end of times Jesus will return, smash the cross and fall in with Islam. Interfaith dialogue that, eh?

And of course, his preaching skills are irrelevant. Correction: they add to his toxicity.

Anyone else ever notice that groups with names like, “Human Rights Commission,” and “Civil Rights Commission,” tend to do nothing but take away those very rights?

That’s an old trick of real estate developers. They name their subdivisions for what they destroy; “Quail Crossing” no longer has any space for quail, “Fox Meadow” has eliminated the grounds that the fox used to frolic on, etc.

  29. Indeed, ET. That is precisely why the common law can (largely) be distilled down to a series of objective tests: reasonable foreseeability of damage in negligence; lowering a person in the estimation of right-thinking members of the community in defamation; etc. Subjective elements have an extremely limited role in, e.g., informed consent to medical treatment.
Unfortunately, the Charter and the cult of victimhood enshrined in our human rights commissions and tribunals give full rein to subjectivity. They are incompatible with our traditions and society.
Irwin Daisy, I don’t doubt that the man believes what he preaches. It is true that what he preaches is utter rot.
MND, I have no second thoughts. I simply paraphrase the imam’s statements. Know your enemy. Right?

  30. BTW, the imam didn’t gloss over denying the divinity of Christ, either. He went into considerable detail on how Jesus will return to “Syria”, do his Messiah gig, settle down, marry, have children, and DIE.

  33. Comment left at law is cool, or ‘the baby barricudas’:
So it’s ‘you’ versus the ‘defenders of free speech’ is it? Well, since only one side is defined, let’s define the other.
‘You’ defend Islamic fascism and bigotry. One of the complaintants, CIC leader, Mohammad Elmasry, has declared “that all Israelis over 18 are valid targets for suicide bombers to murder.” Syed Soharwardy, a tin-pot fascist and trained Wahhabiist ‘imam,’ has publicly called for Canada to be ruled by sharia law. That means throwing homosexuals off buildings to their deaths, stoning of adulterers, dhimmitude and jizya for infidels, subjugation of women and cutting off limbs for petty crimes.
Therefore, ‘you’ are against freedom of speech – which is fascist. And ‘you’ are for shariah law in Canada and killing Israelis over the age of 18. Which makes you totalitarian, racist, bigoted, misogynist, murdering monsters.
So, now that we have accurate definitions, let’s rephrase your terms:
The totalitarian, racist, bigoted, misogynist, murdering, fascist monsters versus the defenders of free speech.

  34. I’ve been reading a bit about the German Quran film documentation. Hitler and his henchmen were quite interested in it and the project was thought lost in the war, when in fact it was covered up.
However, I doubt it will do much good in an effort to reform Islam.
In order to end confusion in Islamic doctrine, the third caliph, Usman, took some 24 existing Qurans (including Mohammad’s, allegedly), created the Quran Islam uses today and destroyed the rest. This happened hundreds of years after Mo died. On top of that, many of the verses are directly pilfered from older Jewish and Christian texts. For example, the famous ‘no compulsion in religion’ verse is directly ripped off from the Talmud, word for word.
Now, even given these historical, unarguable facts, Muslims still claim that the ‘uncreated’ and ‘immutable’ Quran transmitted to Mohammad is an exact replica of the one found in heaven.
Islam is not rational. It’s been pointed out by many Islamic scholars that every fifth verse of the Quran makes no sense whatsoever. It is not written in chronological order. It’s written from the shortest verses to the longest. There are many words, which are not words in Arabic, or any other language for that matter. And it has absolutely no context without consulting the Hadith and Sira.
Given that, the veracity of more facts will not reform it.

  35. irwin daisy: From Political Islam I got the trilogy including an abridged Qur’an with a lot of the repetition removed AND the suras re-arranged chronologically. All non-believers who are not interested in all the nutty internal stuff, the rituals (how to clean yourself after a sh*t etc) should consider getting the trilogy from them. They’re little red books, too, which is kinda neat.
    Political Islam
No sane person, after reading the trilogy, would claim that Islam is reformable.

  36. It’s becoming clearer, Mohamed has written a plan in the Koran/Quaran, whatever, to end all civilization at the rate his blind followers are going. Brutally killing and terrorizing, instilling fear in their own people and plotting to infiltrate all the countries of the world stupid enough to let them in is all part of the interpretation. Anyone who says that’s not the case has only to look around them, around the globe, see where the turmoil exists and WHY.
Any cult that can brainwash their young men with the promise of 72 virgins for killing Infidels, treats women like cattle, needs to be severely culled from this earth.
It’s a plague on humanity and has to be treated as such.
