“Hey John, where can I sell my shares?”

Who to believe – the CBC, or my own lyin’ eyes? Stephen Taylor shreds John Cruikshank’s response to Doug Finley;

I understand that a private association like the Conservative party does not have the sort of transparent and reliable complaints process that we have at the CBC. That is regrettable.”

You say “private” like it’s a bad thing. Besides, it is not the transparency and accountability of the Conservative Party that is in the spotlight here. Again, it is that of the CBC.

Read the whole thing. As commentor “BB” notes, Cruikshank’s “transparency” stops short of naming the reporter.

  1. Man.I cannot wait until PMSH gets a majority, and can rid the average Canuck of this leach on our wallets! PBS seems to do quite well in the States.Throw CBCpravda into the public sector, and let them sink or swim on their own merit.Hell. Even make it a referundum issue if need be.The pitiful 1% who watch/listen aren’t going to make a difference. And TSN carries better sports coverage anywho.

  2. My, my, Steve knows how to eviscerate.
The Canadian Broadcorping Castration . . . still useless after all these years and tens of billions of our dollars.
Take their budget and give it to the Canadian Forces. They need it.

  3. Hear that? There it is again….the sound of rat claws on the linoleum of CBC’s journalist lounge as the usual axe grinding suspects scurry for cover…must be a new cat in the house.

  4. Well, we have a Conservative complaint against the CBC, why the surprise at the condescending arrogance of the response?
Does it appear, from Cruikshank’s response, the problem lies with the person who DARED to question our own broadcasting corp’s ethics or behavior? Daring to suggest collusion, like the very nerve!!!!
How much objectivity can we expect from any person or entity investigating themselves?

  5. Where Can I sell My shares, John?
Good on Doug Finley for his fund raising letter and Stephen Taylor for fisking the agrrogant sod at CBC.
John Cruikshank is sitting at the helm of a leftist, virtually untouchable media monster and he damned well knows it.
As Canadians citizens we have no choice where the state uses the money we earn from our personal labour.
For at least two of the state forced taxes I pay, it’s a toss up which I detest more, that of paying for the existence of the CBC or paying for the state funded killing of unborn fetuses in our “state run single tier health care monopoly.”
Both are abominations in my view and a personal affront to my conscience at what I must support against my will.
My wish for 2008 is that the CBC will be required to be sold off into the free market arena to compete there.
Sadly, I know my wish for the ‘health care’ system to stop the funding of killing fetuses is a wish in vain.

  6. In 1968 it was rumoured that Pierre Trudeau was a homosexual. Here’s how Liberal insider Christina McCall-Newman recalls Jeanne Sauve defending the accusations in her book “Grits”:

“Listen, ” she would say in discussing it in her street-smart tough-kid manner, “I worked at the CBC for years in Montreal and I know homosexuals. I can smell them. And nobody who new him ever thought that of Pierre.

Mme Sauve, despite having views more extreme than Cheryl Gallant, went on of course to become a Trudeau minister, Governor General, and probably a gay icon to boot. Anyway, I thought it was fair to mention the above passage for historical context on the CBC; that in the not-too-distant past it was synonymous with homosexuality, and that according to Liberal hagiographers!

  7. CBC journalistic standards and practices book:
    1. Bash Conservative Party
    2. Deny Bias…deny,deny,deny
    3. If blatantly caught ……deflect,deflect,deflect
    4. If that doesn’t work….return to point 1
    5. Repeat steps until Liberals are in Power
    6. Then Campaign for Liberal patronage appointment to GG, senate, etc.

  8. The new President of the CBC,a lawyer from Montreal, was recently appointed by Stephen Harper. Will it make a difference? I hope so, but I am not holding my breath.
In future we should be directing all our complaints directly to him.

  9. What is the CBC’s market share? Something like 6% and shrinking?
Pull the plug. It’s not just the bias. It’s poorly researched, incompetent mush.

  10. Read the blogs!!… it is surprising how many people are “fed up” with the CBC and their actions. I have written the CBC Ombudsman, Vince Carlin ombudsman@cbc.ca and asked for them to prove they are taking this matter seriously! and let us as Canadians of a public-funded media know the name/names of the reporter/reporters who were involved with the liberals on that committee and the name/names of the liberal members that knew about it… If you remember, Mr Thibeau started the question off during that committee on Spectrum, and the “chair” very easily agreed…. so it seems strange only Pablo was involved!!….I did receive an email back stating this was being looked into… same type of letter, they go all out to be the best, and maybe the thought they would be involved, is against their belief, however, it is being investigated and action will be taken, etc. etc. etc. Just drop him a note.. doesn’t have to be long… stating we want and deserve answers. It is dangerous that a public-funded network is crafting questions that are being directly asked in our Government. It is one thing to suggest, but to craft questions in perfect English when Pablo has never asked a question in the House before in English… and it was even difficult for him to read them… is not easy to swallow…. Keep the pressure on… we deserve to know!

  12. The CBC is the baggage we must bear for being Canadian taxpayers .
On the other hand, the lefties do all have to pay taxes to support our lads in Afghanistan.
    Heh heh.
Kate; have a very happy and prosperous 2008!
    And get well soon.

  13. The blood-sucking nocturnal creatures have infested a Park Ave. penthouse, an artist’s colony in Williamsburg, Brooklyn… Oh, sorry — thought this was the comments for another blog! But wait a minute, maybe I’m in the right spot after all!

  14. “Reliable” complaints process? More like predictable.
The result of their ‘investigation’ will be some variant of “We have searched deeply within our soul and have come to the conclusion that we are pure as the driven snow, and Stephen Harper is mean.”

  15. The difference between the funds the Conservative Party raises and the CBC is:
People give to the CPC voluntarily.
The CBC gets 1.2 BILLION of OUR tax dollars whether we like it or not.
This little mob of power mongers use this taxpayer money to create their little elite playpen of snobby journalists, artsy fartsy nudefests (Mary Walsh’s recent program shooting of naked people across the country), rude and gross joke fests, taxpayer funded without accountability trips around the world on story fishing ideas and waste that no privately or shareholder owned corporation could ever justify or pay for.
Remember – it is YOUR tax dollar through CBC who made a radical like Suzuki a household name; Stephen Lewis and his equally communist son Avi gainfully employed where no private sector could stomach their demagogory of the marketplace; and who the heck is that George Str….ompb bump on a log for some show called “The Hour” which is a prime time brainwashing communist love in – on YOUR DIME!!!!

  16. “Reliable” complaints process?
Very reliable they always get the aswer they want. Can’t get much more reliable than that!

  17. Is that like when Ralph Goodale was caught giving illegal leaks about Income Trust changes to outsiders and he said “I have examined myself and found that I did nothing wrong”.
Gee- come to think of it CBC sure did not do a very good investigative job on THAT story did they? Or how about Paul Martin’s ships – tax loopholes HE manipulated that benefited his own company and untendered monopoly contracts with the Canadian Wheat Board and millions in “grants and wage subsidies” to CSL and…
well – CBC could do an entrie series on Paul Martin alone (like the MulroneySchrebier expose only this one is REAL theft and fraud and breeches of ethics – but LIBERAL so forbidden by the CBC to investigate???
Chretien would provide another weekly series for years – Shawinagate, Communist China connections, Maurice Strong connections….
But, oh darn, LIBERAL so CBC can’t touch it.

  18. I’m sure that there is some clever soul out there that could calculate the cost of the positive to the Liberals, and the negative to the Conservativs, advertising that is given out by the CBC as balanced and unbiased News and Social Commentary.
Seeing as how the link between them is without question, maybe it can be added to the Cost of Doing Librano$ business.
As much as I’d like to say, “Off with their heads” a la Alice in Wonderland response to everything. I do enjoy parts of the CBC and being a rural guy, have listened to CBC most of my life. In many places in the more remote areas, it’s the only station you can get on a cheap radio.
Steam clean it and get rid of the “agenda driven and stuck in a ’60’s rut people”. It’s almost 2008 for God’s sake.

  19. A classic “change the subject” rhetorical trick.
The argument was about a reporter helping the Liberal party on the CBC dime, clearly that reporter must have a name and an editor, who, presumably, OK’ed the reporter’s work.
The argument is not about the CPC stooping to attack the vestal integrity of the CBC.
How can a Liberal appointee, and all the Liberal appointees on the CBC board of directors, not be partisan? This is the argument.
The only way for the CBC to avoid charges of partisnaship is to be privatized and not be a branch of the government.

  20. In 1968 it was rumoured that Pierre Trudeau was a homosexual. Here’s how Liberal insider Christina McCall-Newman recalls Jeanne Sauve defending the accusations in her book “Grits”:
I recall a couple of people on a train way back in 1971 whose son was an RCMP officer , one of the guards for Trudeau at the time , that mentioned this , they seemed to want to tell someone , anyone at the time. they said trudeau had “young male visitors”

  21. How about running it like a business …… or any other TV station , for that matter . Let the market decide , starting with their so called news department .

  22. CBC is the Communist Broadcasting Clique of Canada and it always has been. The so called journalists are failed, negative thinking, nasty minded souls who appeal to the lowest human thoughts and emotions. The people who work for CBC use snotty innuendo to attack decent people (the Reform Party members for example) and in their rambling, pseudo intellectual, patronizing style they refute common decency as a childlike, ‘red neck’, uneducated way of looking at things.
The CBC is long past being a news reporting outfit, it is a propaganda machine for the world elitist Totalitarian (Communist) human haters. The Liberano/Dipper political parties in Canada reflect the same agenda…freedom loving people should be aware of this agenda when they view anything on the CBC. NOTHING they produce is without the human hating spin.
Believing anything the CBC says, on face value, is very naive and foolish; they should be seen as the enemy of the people and as ‘useful idiots’ they are a window to the vision of the twisted people who are attempting to undermine and destroy the freedom of all Canadians (and the free world). If CBC is FOR anything – you can be sure it is not in the best interest of the rest of us.
If they are disbanded, we will get these egregious little leaches off our blood bank. It would be a ‘good thing’ IMO. Thanks to blogs like sda the CBC is being ‘outed’ without shrouds and burkas – THANK-YOU Kate!
Happy New Year to you Kate and all the incredible posters who frequent this site that is voice for the Freedom of Canadian people.

  23. Should be spelled, ‘Crookshank.’
This letter is a good sign. They must be feeling warmth, if not heat. Not long ago, the arrogant pricks wouldn’t have responded at all.
Typical leftard argument, though. Provide no facts. Make irrelevant counter accusations. And deflect, deflect, deflect.

  24. “The CBC is non-partisan.”
I tried, but just couldn’t read any further than that outright lie.

  25. It takes two to collude. What do you get when you cross a CBC with a LPOC…. a billion dollar beast CBCLPOC or a corruptus blatheruis cohortis lunaticanis pompestes canadais. This fearful beast shows no mercy as it sucks up tax dollars ever seeking to regain it’s preferred lair on top of money mountain. Slay the beast brave viillagers!

  26. Mansbridge gets way too much money but the villan there is no other than Brian Mulroney who saw to it that Mansbridge got a big raise – Mulroney was cultivating Mansbridge for favorable treatment.
I didn’t think this was a big secret but after Schreiber saga is over this may be investigated as well. Mulroney had influence as P.M. at CBC and could arrange huge salary increases.

  27. Is the CBC included in the new Accountability Act and freedom of information rules? Can WE, the OWNERS of these self rightious ego maniacs get the inside infromation on what the various useless programs and junkets and ego driven productions that nobody watches actually cost us?
And, yes, salaries. How do their salaries compare to real journalists in the real world?
And perks and expence accounts. They are oh so happy to report on whetyher or not a cabinet minister should have rode in the luggage racks instead of on a charter flight but how about them? What is their per diem expence accounts when they travel? Meals and transporatation?
How about their makeup and hair and wardrobe after blasting Stephen harper for having a hair dresser?
Shall we turn a few tables?

  28. CBC always has and always will pay WAY above the norm for journalists and broadcasters. So say my friends who remain in the media, anyways.

  29. Just in case anyone is been wondering why the CBC has been campaigning to prevent a Conservative majority, this pie chart — “Political party donations by the current CBC board of directors” — should get rid of the blind spots:
    stephentaylor.ca/archives/000179.html

  30. Crookshank blew his cover in stating the CBC is unbiased, proving he knew bloody well the general belief is exactly the opposite. Actions speak louder than words.
The CBC should report the facts and only the facts, no opinion or spin to manipulate those facts.
Political programs should be canned and Newman should ride off into the sunset.
Give us the facts, we’ll make our own decisions, form our own opinions. We’ve been treated like morons by these talking heads for far too long and at great expense.

  31. As I work in the media, I’ve always given a hard time to the local CBC grunts (I never fail to remind them I pay their wages), some are tired of the bias coming from back East sometimes making their jobs difficult to do. Complaints of excessive meddling by the higher ups both local, and national are voiced when pressed on a variety of issues.

  32. CBC BLOG. December 29, 2007
This a copy of my comment to cbcblog
Your comments tend to reinforce the bias you so clearly feel the CBC would never allow themselves to express. You suggest that Mr. Finlay is destroying “public faith in the political process”, well the admitted collusion of CBC with the LPOC involving an ethics committee has indeed destroyed this faith. You speak of transparency, okay… which reporter{S}, which member{s} of the Liberal party, what discipline, announced where, on the CBC radio, website, TV, your blog? What does the amount of fundraising have to do with this action, sounds biased to me and the term “whipping boy” sounds dangerously politically incorrect, better check the book. Speaking of pervasive cynicism, yes CBC does have an image problem, deserved or otherwise, perhaps that would be a good place to focus you energies has in this ever expanding information age, some people feel it is no longer justifiable to expend 1 billion tax dollars on the CBC. Thank you for keeping this most serious issue in the news and it does not bode well for your future when you mess with THE FRIENDLY GIANT, not a good demographic to irritate. Happy New Year.

  33. Here’s my suggestion for CBC:
Get some advertisers (IOW prove anybody watches your programming), or get off the air, I mean, the taxpayer teat.

  34. Here is the CBC Board of Directors. Notice how they represent a cross section of Canadians. NOT!!!
So, super blog sleuths – what do all of these Liberal appointees to the CBC board (except the new guy appointed in April) have in common?
And, should not a REAL non biased arm’s length from government privately owned media outlet be following this story?
Oh – I forgot – you know the people the CBC interviews for their opinions on a news story – THEY ARE PAID!!!! So people like Nicolls, a so called Conservative can make BIG BUCKS just by bad mouthing Stephen Harper – that’s the kind of good stuff CBC uses your money to pay for. Or Steven Staples, the Commie anti war guy, or – well, you get the picture.
As long as these talking heads toe the CBC anti Vonservative bash Bush line they get invited back and get paid. Yup – follow the money in this whole crumbling mess of a propaganda machine.
    http://cbc.radio-canada.ca/about/directors/index.shtml

  35. “I understand that a private association like the Conservative party does not have the sort of transparent and reliable complaints process that we have at the CBC”
Perhaps Mr. C should reflect on how transparent and reliable the CBC might have to be to keep small individual donations flowing.
Instead, he seems happy to feed Liberal Senators with talking points, envy at how much cash the CPC have accumulated.

  36. Well, here’s the comment I left on the CBC website. For some reason…it’s not showing up any more. Strange that.
Hi John. Now that you have finished telling us how fair and balanced the folks at the CBC are, perhaps you can clarify a few issues for me.
Please tell me how Christina Lawand still has a job at the CBC given her hatchet job on Harper with regards to Palestinians and Israeli’s? You know the story John. Christine did some fancy cut and pasting to make it look like Harper was saying something he was not. That’s just one grievous example of many.
What about your NATIONAL showing the words “heil Harper” (trying to scare folks John….after all, we do have that “Hidden Agenda” to worry about) beside a picture of the new Prime Minister? What was your excuse then John…somethinhg about a screen paste with a funky cursor placement? Did anyone really believe that John….and if so, they must work for the CBC (or the NDP) also.
Hey John….why don’t you tell both sides of the story when it comes to Global Warming….er, I mean, Climate Change. Because, as you know, the so-called “experts” have been wrong before. After all…with the cold weather and all…the lack of new Hurricanes, the lack of rising waters….”Global Warming” just doesn’t cut it any more. Better call it something else and hope the gullible masses don’t realize it.
By the way John…when the CBC is busy airing the cheesy “Inconvenient Truth” by Al Gore, why don’t you also take the time to mention the legal disclaimer that schools in Britain have had to attach to the film because it contains so many falsehoods and errors, as well as outright Fabrications. Oh..and you may mention that Al Gore was worth less than a million bucks when he left politics, but has increased that to well over 100 Million now……all of it the product of fear mongering to the ignorant masses who cannot think crticially.
I’ve noticed that you have never had any real scientists on your shows to dispute global warming, or Mans effect on the atmosphere. I’m sure it’s simply an oversight John….not something planned on right? After all…now that the Liberals are not in power…the issue seems to be so much more dire according to the CBC. The Liberal Party did nothing…and are seen as the champions of fighting climate change…and the Conservatives, who are actually doing something are portayed as being “deniers”
Sorry John…..I just pulled those examples from what I’ve seen on the CBC on the few occassions I watch it.
I would have more respect for the folks at CBC if they would just wear their “Trudeau was Great” T-shirts on the air and stop pretending to be a real news organization. The CBC is a joke, and so are most of the folks you refer to as reporters or journalists. The CBC has neither, though when you have Andrew Coyne or Christie Blatchford on the air…you get a little closer.
    Disdainfully yours:
    James.

  37. I have never read such arrogance from a top bureaucrat in my whole life…
Wait a second, that speech sounds a hell of a lot like the ones coming out of Winnipeg, and the head office of the Canadian Wheat Board!
Is it the same speech writer?

  38. In the few instances where I have recently sought to fight or even question the system I was shocked by the naked hostility displayed by the “elites” in this country.
I can understand a cabbie in New York being rude, or a market stall operator in Bangalore being rude, or a writer for The Economist being rude, or a gaucho in Argentina being rude. They’ve either accomplished something, or overcome hardship, or can throw a punch.
But a Canadian? Copping attitude? Not on.

  39. If you read Pannetta’s reBUTTal to this ,you may notice that he brings up the fact that the Conservatives have a huge warchest a few times. So,screw FAIR reporting and facts, they have lots of money and the cbc is just leveling the playing field.Any good commie newspaper would do the same……….I have a problem with cbc and ctv’s take on events, but the biggest problem is what they don’t report. Cbc and ctv,the unofficial opposition.

  40. If the CBC’s screw ups weren’t the result of bias, wouldn’t we see an equal number of incidents of bias against the Liberals and Conservatives?

  41. To add to my above post. Hit the link’the cbc’ and then hit ‘the story to the letter’. No bias there, folks, let’s move on,lizzie may,may be saying something, somewhere to someone.

  42. I wonder if there would be any off-the-wall Conservative MP who would put forth a private member’s bill to sell the CBC to the Liberal Party (on a fill-or-kill basis.)

  43. Another example of CBC fare that needs to be excised was aired last night on “Air Farce”. It’s nothing but tired old anti-Conservative satire with smart-assed smears and total disrespect for our PM. No doubt they’re playing to Toronto audience. It’s an expensive production to entertain one city.

  44. The CBC receives over $1.1 billion every year from the Canadian taxpayer and they generate at least another $400 million in ad revenues – where that money goes is anyones guess because they don’t put a nickel into production (all productions in Canada are financed with funds from telefilm and the Canadian Film and Television Fund). The Accountability Act allows Parliament for the first time ever to conduct an audit of the CBC – so c’mon Harper, lets see where the money’s going at the CBC.
