Polling For The Rock Hard Stupid

Please pee into the phone;

The poll suggested that 17% of Canadians believed many NHL players use performance-enhancing drugs while 36% said a fair number used them. Thirty-two percent felt only a few were on them and 1% said none used them. Fourteen percent had no opinion.

Who needs drug testing when you have public “opinion”?
I don’t know what’s more discouraging – that someone apparently paid for this, or that pollsters actually found people willing to answer such utterly meaningless questions.

More on the science of polling, from the comments“Did/can anybody quantify the difference between “many” and “a fair number”? What would be fair? 99%? I think so. Then they would almost all be on a level playing rink. BTW…do we have a “fair” number of taxes, or just “many”?
Only an expert can answer a question like that. Unfortunately, I’ve had to ban Pollara computers from accessing the site.

  1. blame;
    McMahon wrestling stars=Chris Benoit
    bodybuiders=Arnie pumping iron
    Olympic “amateur” atheletes=Ben Johnson
    mmm 2 out of 3 CDN’s
    Canada

  2. lets poll Canajuns and ask them if individually they think they personally are:
    A. Smarter than Average.
    B. Dumber than Average.
when the results come back at nearly 100% A. we can assume that the true 50% that are dumber than average didnt participate in the poll.
    next we can ask them
    A. Will Global temperatures rise by 5degrees
    B. Will Global temperatutes rise by more than 5 degrees.
and see what to plan for next year.

  3. Make performance enhancing drugs mandatory, put them all on the same level. No more controversy.
    tongue firmly planted in cheek.

  4. Let’s poll them and see how many think the Toronto Maple Leafs should be required to take performance-enhancing drugs.

  5. Muttrus@lmao. I vote yes. Seriously, I known a few pro’s over my travels, the most I have ever heard of was a lot of sudifed being used before games to open up the air ways. I actually tried it before a beer league game, it freaking works. LOL Still not totally kosher in my mind but that is pretty much common throughout the league.

  6. @Cal2:
How about this variation on the old standard:
Question 1: Are you smarter, just as smart, or dumber than the average?
Question 2: Is your next-door neighbour whose address number is smaller than yours (the one closest to you in household role if there’s more than one; N/A if you’re at the bottom of the street) smarter, just as smart, or dumber than the average?
Question 2: Is your [mother-/father]-in-law smarter, just as smart, or dumber than the average?
    And then, collate them.
    And then, shake your head.

  7. Heavens, let’s not ask anyone what they believe when all anyone has to do is ask SDA readers.
The poll actually provides useful marketing information, both for the NHL, the individual teams, and the MSM.
But anything the MSM does is automatically wrong, isn’t it Kate?

  8. We, the public, who live from Nanaimo to Campbell River on Vancouver Island have a brand new upper levels highway.
We are in a state of *Rock Hard Stupid* here every day and we seem not to realize it.
This morning there are several cars deep in the ditch on their roof.
That black ice condition complete with flipped cars in the ditch is a required condition before Emcon services trucks are out salting the well known black ice areas.
You would think the trucks could salt known bad areas when the temp drops below freezing, but no, several cars must first roll into the ditch before salting begins.
They do not want to waste a grain of salt.
BC auto insurance Corporation costs are vastly higher that road salting, yet this silly practice continues daily and no one seems to twigg to the idea that the contractor is conserving year-end profits at the cost of our personal injury and property damage.
Naw, we can not be this stupid, I must be missing something. = TG

  9. How does a MSM poll that lame with responses that lame provide useful marketing information?
Just exactly how does the NFL “market” those results? Just curious.

  10. There’s a reason they selected “huh?” as a nick.
(Or is it “DJB”? Didn’t you promise to “delete” me from your bookmarks “forthwith” a month ago?)

  11. Yet another example of a supposed news organization manufacturing their own supposed news.
But then I guess the multi-millions of sheep out there who actually support these rags and live for the next little bit on Spears or Hilton aren’t particularly worried about seperating hard news from trivia and entertainment.
    Sigh.

  12. Cal2 @10.04 AM.
I would assume that 100% would be “smarter than average” from which we can assume 50% of Canadians are liers.

  13. you can get paid to take surveys too you know! so whose the bigger dummy; the dumy or the person who pays the dummy?

  14. So what’s wrong with performance enhancing drugs? The drugs aren’t being forced on these guys – they’re the outperformers who always went to the limit or more to be the best. Shooting chemicals isn’t much different to them than another mile on the track or another fifty chin-ups.
If there was a drug available that enhanced mental performance, wouldn’t you want your accountant, or lawyer, or doctor to take some? Or would you want to hire someone who was just barely normal?
There’s more important things to worry about than whether an overpaid athlete/entertainer is screwing up his life. If you’re convinced that your kid is going to be a drug-free hockey star, maybe you should find him a new way to spend his free time. If you’re convinced he’s going to be a hockey star, get used to the drugs. It’s what you apparently want.

  15. Kate, you dodged “huh”s very valid point. This could be useful marketing information for the NHL, the players association, or a host of other groups. Assuming it was paid for by a private party, I think the fact someone DID pay for it compliments the assertion that there is some sort of value to knowing these numbers. After all, the market is never wrong, right?
Steroid use has been a big issue in sports lately, so I could see it being useful in assessing whether or not public perception of a sport correlates with actual levels of steroid abuse within it; good stuff for PR people to know.

  16. jred – that type of polling isn’t released to the news media. They’re for internal consumption.
This is just another example of a lazy media creating news where none exists, as a cost-effective surrogate for actually reporting on current events that matter.

  17. Did/can anybody quantify the difference between “many” and “a fair number”? What would be fair? 99%? I think so.Then they would almost all be on a level playing rink. BTW…do we have a “fair” number of taxes, or just “many”?

  18. Hey muttsrus…go easy on my Leafs! This IS our yr to win!One thing about us Leaf fans,we are ever optimistic.

  19. I think the combination of “roid” use and the inherent aggression the resulting mood change brings and the new wimpy NHL anti-fighting anti-hitting fwuffy bunny rules are on a collision course of this supposition is even remotely accurate.
with all the increased bench time and 3 on 2 penalty killing action (woo-hoo), NHL hockey will become even more boring than what the current US expansion teams are making it.
Then maybe we can go back to an 8 to 10 team Canadian national league and play real hockey again.
    Fred Shero rules!!!

  20. Do I think that some players take performance enhancing drugs?
    Yes
Does my opinion on this subject matter?
    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  21. remember when the canajum gubmint went to bat for this non-perfomance enhancing drug testee. a gold medal is a gold medal no matter what the lesson to the youngsters is. I think even Dick Pound bit his lip on this one.
    http://www.rossrebagliati.com/
he appeared on Leno a week or so after and Jay made the classic line –
“so you inhaled but you didnt smoke, while president Clinton smoked but didnt inhale”
lets take a poll and ask Canajuns how many think that BC especially Whistler is full of dope smoking EI cases. how many think Nfld is full of pro welfare cases and how many think the sun shines out of ………

  22. I did delete you from my bookmarks, Kate. Exactly as I promised.
    And it’s “djb” not “DJB”.
I’m curious about your reaction to this poll, though. You have no problem steering your loyal readers to other polls in deliberate attempts to influence them. Do the ones you can’t affect tick you off?

  23. Ummm if I told you that most celebrities, famous types and movie stars had plastic surgery would you love them less? If I told you that the centerfold was a photoshopped image would you be less aroused? Let people have their fantasy’s because it is good for business.

  24. .”go easy on my Leafs! This IS our yr to win!One thing about us Leaf fans,we are ever optimistic.
    Posted by: Sammy”
Win what, Sammy, Miss Congeniality? 😉
    ATM, it’s Rangers 6….Leafs 1, 2 minutes to go in the 3rd.

  25. I’ve just polled all three of us (me, myself and I) and 66% responded that they respect Leaf fans on a certain level in that they realize that even if they are from Toronto, they, the team, are playing the Canadian game. This poll was accurate plus or minus 33.3 points, 19 times out of 20. The 20th time I ran out of beer, eh.

  26. Kate….what has getting an expert and banning pollera computers got to do with answering my question? Oh wait…Heh…surely you are not saying they are “experts”?….Bwhahahahaha

  27. I for one routinely skip reading the results of any of these types of surveys. Try to imagine how little I care about the opinion of the bewildered herd that is being led by the main stream media. The only thing that is being measured here is the MSM’s ability to shape public perception. These opinions are based on little or no facts are are totally irrelevant in the big scheme of things. These types of polls are akin to my favorite definition of a COMMITTEE: ” A group of the unfit appointed by the unwilling to do the unnecessary.”

  28. Well…t-shirt marketing of course.
Some of us will buy the shirt that says:
I BELIEVE the jocks are using roids,
and some of will but the other one:
I don’t believe Jocks are using roids
