Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

(1) Why pregnant women don’t topple over
A HUGELY pregnant woman teetering along is actually a sublime feat of evolutionary engineering – ages of adaptations have gone into her backbone to make sure she doesn’t fall on her face, scientists say.
Women’s spines have evolved differently from men’s to better carry the weight and awkward proportions of pregnancy, according to research published yesterday by the journal Nature. The study sheds light on how humanity’s ancestors adapted biologically to meet the rigours of walking upright….

Federal Tory support climbs: poll
RACHEL MENDLESON
The federal Conservatives have rebounded in Nova Scotia in the last quarter, with public support for the three major parties now tied, according to a recent poll conducted by Corporate Research Associates Inc.
Almost one-third of decided voters in Nova Scotia (31 per cent) said they support the Conservative party, up from 21 per cent in August. Meanwhile, support in the province for the federal Liberals dropped to 31 per cent from 37 per cent, and the NDP support base fell to 30 per cent from 35 per cent. Support for the Green party remained relatively stable, falling slightly to five per cent from seven per cent.
The governing party is faring even better in the whole of Atlantic Canada, where nearly four in 10 say they back the federal Conservatives, up from nearly three in 10 in August.
Slightly less than half of Atlantic Canadians (45 per cent) are either undecided, don’t plan to vote or refused to choose.
Satisfaction with the performance of Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government has increased, as well. In Nova Scotia, 38 per cent of decided voters said they were mostly satisfied, up from 29 per cent. The number of decided respondents who said they were mostly dissatisfied fell to 35 per cent from 40 per cent. …-

Short piece at American Thinker about the pernicious legacy of Edward Said (his Orientalism) including a link to a piece at New York Sun about the great Ibn Warraq contra Said. Essential information to understand the great clash of civiliations we’re engaged in. Ibn Warraq wrote “Why I am not a Muslim” which I hope Hana (if she’s around) gets around to.

“[T]he idea is that Palestine on both sides of the Jordan should hold the Arabs, their progeny, and many millions of Jews. What I do not deny is that in the process the Arabs of Palestine will necessarily become a minority in the country of Palestine. What I do deny is that that is a hardship…. [T]he Arabs of Palestine would also prefer Palestine to be the Arab State No. 4, No. 5, or No. 6–that I quite understand; but when the Arab claim is confronted with our Jewish demand to be saved, it is like the claims of appetite versus the claims of starvation.”

Before you begin reading this, please have before you on screen, paper, or wall, a reliable full-scale map of the Middle East, one stretching from Morocco to Afghanistan, from the Caspian Sea to the Gulf of Aden. You will note that the territory covering 5.25 million miles belongs to states of the Arab League—18 independent Arab states and three part-Arab Muslim states, Mauritania, Somalia, and Djibouti. There is one holdout in that hegemony: Along the Mediterranean, south of Lebanon, east of Egypt, and west of Jordan, is the 8,000 square mile Jewish state of Israel—the only Jewish homeland that ever was and ever will be. The population of Israel, 7 million, is 20 percent Arab. The ratio of Arab to Jewish land is 640:1.

CalgaryGrit has the breakdown on Calgary Sun columnist Paul Jackson admitting to taking his orders from the Progressive Conservative Premier’s office in Alberta: http://calgarygrit.blogspot.com/
[this sentence here will assert as a pre-emptive apologetic rant defending Jackson. I’ll even throw out the words “the Red Star” and “CBCPravda”!]
Seriously, this is political bias at its worst, and while I’ll concede there most certainly is some dubious reporting at the Star and CBC at times, I am surprised to see that SDA has covered its ears and eyes on this story, which is blatant, irrefutable evidence of political and media collaboration…
…Kate, this is an issue that absolutely screams for your attention. I hope SDAs regular visitors would agree with me that this is an extremely disturbing story, and one that should receive some more attention on high-traffic blogs like yours.
Sorry Johnny, that story is no different than the T.O. Rosedale Conservative candidate (Webster?) getting the boot.
The political parties can do whatever they want with candidates. Even “Larry the Mayor” guy claims the opposition can be bought off to go away.
Paul Jackson’s role is “all about him”. Does anyone really read his column?
Attention plains people! Did anyone watch CBC’s “The National” documentary on the tar sands? Twenty minutes of bashing the industy!! One slight porblem. How did the CBC get to Fort Mac to film the doc?? Hypocrites!!
Another question. What powered the engines on the multitude of airliners that flew to Bali for the recent UN Kyoto conference?? How did the followers of the Suzukian cult get to Bali? If you’ve answered JP-4 (jet fuel) that was refined in Alberta, you understand the hypocrisy behind the “Key-Auto” fiasco!!
Chandler getting the boot isn’t the story, aj – the story is the Calgary Sun columnist who was asked to write favourable columns about Chandler’s opponent at the behest of the premier’s office, and who did, and has now been busted by a paper trail and admitted that he did just what Stelmach wanted him to do.
Of course politicians hit up reporters and columnists for favourable coverage. But read the stories about Jackson, and you’ll see the degree to which he was simply a bought and paid for conservative shill. And he’s admitted to it…this isn’t rumour and conjecture, aj.
If you’re OK with a conservative premier enjoying success with dictating what a political columnist writes, I assume you’ll suspend criticism over favorable Liberal coverage by Star writers.

What Mulroney’s attacking Turner in the debates over patronage has to do with the Schreiber affair?
And why are they bringing up his relations with former industry minister Maxime Bernier?
It really is a kangaroo court.
Why does no one ask if the president of Air Canada (appointed just before Trudeau left office) thought his arm was being twisted to buy Airbus by the Conservatives, why didn’t he resign? They should be questioning him and the then board of directors, not Brian Mulroney.

Time for a class action suit to return the tens of millions of dollars stolen from taxpayers by the Liberal Party as noted by Ju8dge Gomery. Time also for all Conservatives to demanmd a Public Inquiry into the many dubious happenings of the Martin and Chretien regimes. I’m tired of the Liberal party being judge and jury to all dealings in this country including their own illegal ones. It’s time to get down in the gutter with the Liberals.

Al Gore is criticised for lining his own pockets after £3,300-per-minute green speech
By NATHAN KAY – More by this author » Last updated at 15:45pm on 10th December 2007
Al Gore has come under fire for making personal gain from his mission to save the planet – after charging £3,300 a minute to deliver a poorly received speech[…]
that’s 6,879.30 Canadian dollar a minute.
How about Robert Thibault, a defendant in defamation case (which BTW is not frivolous, it has merit), questioning the plaintiff, Mulroney.
When is the MSM going to report on the real story – Thibault and his ex parte meetings with KHS, leaving him open to accusation that he engineered this whole affair (note that Grits didn’t receive KHS affadavit, even though EVERYBODY ELSE DID!! THE GUY SHOTGUNNED THE THING TO THE WORLD).
Thibault for sure has interfered in a judicial extradition case. He has yet to disclose his conversations with Mr Shreiber. I want details – dates, times, items of discussion, agreements, everything.
Given the MSM record in this area of investigating Liberals (they were brought kicking and screaming into Adscam affair, acquiescing only when they realized they could sell newspapers and air time). Remember Mark Holland, who, without authority, removed documents, including personnel files, and is supposed to be investigated for contempt of parliament by the Speaker of the HofC? What were the results of that “investigation?”
I guess Milliken is too busy to do his job; apparently not given, according to my Kingston friends, he has done zilch for his riding, which is mired in a deep recession with no job creation but lots of crushing regulations and halfway houses, housing pedophiles, within leering distance of schools.
One more rant – anyone noticed Dion and his Grits are demanding Tories produce Kyoto implementation plan v.v. Rodriguez bill, yet neither he nor any Liberal administration has done any such thing. Where is your plan Mr Dion. C’mon, if this is such a great idea where we all get rich on green economy, surely you must have a plan to present to the voters. I suspect the plan is this – carbon credit purchases for China, India and Russia (which incidentally has already received $millions,so they can develop clean technologies, right?).
I really hope Dion makes his final screwup and gift to the Tories – by engineering a Feb 08 election. No matter what, we only have to listen to their non-policies, hypocritical accusations and refusal to return stolen taxpayer dollars, until fixed election date at latest.
This is the exact same script the Liberals followed the last time they were deprived of power. Funny how historians looked kindly on Mulroney’s reign until this latest fortuitous(for the Liberals) gong show, yet left office as the most hated PM. As do all Conservatives. The Liberals endeavour to paint all politicians with their brush and then rush in to clean up with the assistance of their media friends. The present government will meet the same fate unless it starts to fight fire with fire.
Lapierre stated, while on with CTV’s Mike Duffy, that the Liberal MPs on the Ethics Committee were given today’s questions to ask by the CBC.
That alone should tell Canadians a whole lot about their tax-funded media’s objective intent.
Jean LaPierre tells Mike Duffy that the CBC fed Liberal MP’s the questions to ask Mulroney on live TV this afternoon – flustered Duffy puckers then mumbles on about libel and moves right along…
I have been following the CBC’s coverage of this inquiry and am still in awe at how entrenched their anti-right attitude is.They slip in Harper’s name as often as it seems possible,in any context, yet I have never heard the countering argument of a’partisan witch-hunt’used by them once.
I too heard the allegation on CTV that the CBC supplied some of today’s questions.I must also state that todays commentary on CTV seemed pretty fair-minded to me.Hopefully Mr.Duffy sees this as an opportunity to slag the CBC,although history tells us they are ussually careful to cover each other’s asses.
But I do have one reccurring question for the partisan hounds nipping at the heals of the honourably sleazy Mr.Mulroney.
Would they be happy if Mulroney told them he gave Schreiber a receipt on a cocktail napkin for his cash payment?
It certainly seemed a perfectly satisfactory answer to the liberals when Mr.Chretien was receiving cash during Shawinigate.

Good one teddy!! Don’t be surprised if Mr Harper and company move to that and many other alleged ethical lapses of Monsieur Chretien, including his links with Dion. Harper did warn the Liberals to be careful what they wished for. The NDP and Bloc will gleefully cooperate, given they are after exactly the same constitutency as Dion.
Harper, and Mulroney incidentally, are way smarter than this bunch, who have only succeeded in disgracing themselves, particularly Robert Thibault (no I’m not letting go on this one).

Over 100 Prominent Scientists Warn UN Against ‘Futile’ Climate Control Efforts
“Significant new peer-reviewed research has cast even more doubt on the hypothesis of dangerous human-caused global warming.”
BALI, Indonesia – The UN climate conference met strong opposition Thursday from a team of over 100 prominent international scientists, who warned the UN, that attempting to control the Earth’s climate was “ultimately futile.”
The scientists, many of whom are current and former UN IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) scientists, sent an open letter to the UN Secretary-General questioning the scientific basis for climate fears and the UN’s so-called “solutions.”
“Attempts to prevent global climate change from occurring are ultimately futile, and constitute a tragic misallocation of resources that would be better spent on humanity’s real and pressing problems,” the letter signed by the scientists read. The December 13 letter was released to the public late Thursday.
The letter was signed by renowned scientists such as Dr. Antonio Zichichi, president of the World Federation of Scientists; Dr. Reid Bryson, dubbed the “Father of Meteorology”; Atmospheric pioneer Dr. Hendrik Tennekes, formerly of the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute; Award winning physicist Dr. Syun-Ichi Akasofu of the International Arctic Research Center, who has twice named one of the “1000 Most Cited Scientists”; MIT atmospheric scientist Dr. Richard Lindzen; UN scientist Dr. Vincent Gray of New Zealand; French climatologist Dr. Marcel Leroux of the University Jean Moulin; World authority on sea level Dr. Nils-Axel Morner of Stockholm University; Physicist Dr. Freeman Dyson of Princeton University; Physicist Dr. Zbigniew Jaworowski, chairman of the Scientific Council of Central Laboratory for Radiological Protection in Poland; Paleoclimatologist Dr. Robert M. Carter of Australia; Former UN IPCC reviewer Geologist/Geochemist Dr. Tom V. Segalstad, head of the Geological Museum in Norway; and Dr. Edward J. Wegman, of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.
“It is not possible to stop climate change, a natural phenomenon that has affected humanity through the ages. Geological, archaeological, oral and written histories all attest to the dramatic challenges posed to past societies from unanticipated changes in temperature, precipitation, winds and other climatic variables,” the scientists wrote.
“In stark contrast to the often repeated assertion that the science of climate change is ‘settled,’ significant new peer-reviewed research has cast even more doubt on the hypothesis of dangerous human-caused global warming,” the open letter added. …-

Let’s play Copts and Muslims.
From a new site: sonsofapesandpigs.org
“This is what Mohamed in his Koran -and his followers now- love to call Christians, Jews and westerners in general: “SONS OF APES AND PIGS”.
Apes for their amusements, fun and to laugh at … Pigs are for the slaughter… Notice that Mohamed and his followers don’t limit the courtesy only to you … but extend it to your parents and ancestors.
In fact, Mohamed told his followers that this is how they should always greet you, and I challenge you to find any Muslim that disagree with anything he said. We’ll provide all references in a fully detailed posting about the subject.
If you’re American, westerner, Christian or Jewish and agree with Mohamed’s appellation and finds that it applies to you, then this blog is not for you and you can suite yourself and go back to your monkey cage or your pig house. As for the rest who disagree, we welcome you to join us on a mission (yes, a great mission indeed to make history) and return this appellation back to its senders but with a value added: MOHAMED, KORAN AND ISLAM BIGGEST DISPLAY ON EARTH. You wouldn’t want to miss it
OUR ULTIMATE AIM TO ERADICATE ISLAM’S DECEPTION CAN BE RESUMED IN: DEMOLISHING THE BEAST
We won’t focus on the symptoms; here we’ll deal with the roots. We are dedicated and committed to our unequivocal agenda for banning the Koran and declaring it illegal in America and western countries. For those of little faith we tell them: It will happen. Sad to say it, but Islamic terror is our most trusted ally to make it happen.
If one thing you can trust to be true to itself and bet the farm on it, that would be Islam. In case you don’t know it, a big chunk of the Koran’s teaching are already self-censored and de facto banned in western countries. Mosques are already being monitored. We just have to make it official.
We lived with Muslims for more than 1400 years. I should say, rather, we suffered Islam’s evil and destruction and we still do. We were born and raised in the Arabic language. No one on earth knows Islam and its mentality better than we do. Not Even the highest Islamic authorities of Egypt or Saudi Arabia. Actually they don’t know where to hide right now, neither from our Questioning Islam show, nor from the pressure of their own populations asking them to confront us and refute what we say. But how can they, It’s all from their books.”
It’s all from their books, indeed.
maz2, no need to listen to any of these scientists. They are obviously oil shills; a simple check of the Suzuki proof reveals that – to wit, anyone who “denies” climate change must be an oil shill because, well, only an oil shill would be a denier.
Sorry, Baliboys you can’t have it both (actually three) ways. The point of Bali was to move the Kyoto framework further to the developing nations. Witness their outright refusal to do so, blaming developed world for global warming. Not sabotage there, eh. Anyway, if climate catastrophe awaits us, why is it OK to wait until China and India feel like it? Is this an urgent matter, or not?
Heavy Taliban losses in Musa Qala
Kabul (13 December) – The Afghan Ministry of Defence says that hundreds of Taliban soldiers have been killed, wounded or taken prisoner in the fighting in and around the Afghan town of Musa Qala.
Musa Qala was the only town in the country to be occupied by the Taliban. It was re-taken by the Afghan military and NATO troops on Tuesday, after several days of heavy fighting. The coalition troops were supported, among others, by Dutch Apache helicopters and F16s.
The British newspaper The Times is reporting that the fleeing Taliban have left behind a fortune in opium, worth approximately 200 million euros….-

Christian Activist “Banned for life” From Publicly Criticising Homosexuality (Canada)
REGINA, Saskatchewan, December 13, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission’s decision to impose a “lifetime” ban on a local Christian’s freedom to publicly criticise homosexuality, was upheld this week in its entirety by Saskatchewan Court of Queens Bench.
Bill Whatcott, an evangelical Christian and a licensed practical nurse who lives in Saskatchewan, is a campaigner against the homosexual political movement that is sweeping the Canadian legal system. In 2006, the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission (SHRC) ordered Whatcott to pay $17,500 Cn. to four complainants who complained that their “feelings” and “self-respect” were “injured” by Whatcott’s pamphlets denouncing the “gay lifestyle” as immoral and dangerous.
Whatcott responded to the decision, “This fine is for telling the truth [that] homosexual sodomites can change their behaviour and be set free from their sin and depravity through the forgiveness of sins and shed blood of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.”
He added, “Shame on the Saskatchewan Court of Queens Bench for pandering to homosexual activism and ignoring the truth.”
In its 2005-2006 Annual Report, the Commission noted that Whatcott was “ordered to discontinue distributing any materials that promote hatred against people because of their sexual orientation.”
The tribunal held that “preventing the distribution of such materials was a reasonable limit on Whatcott’s right to freedom of religion and expression as guaranteed by section 2 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms”.
Whatcott appealed the decision to the Court of Queen’s Bench and received the news on Tuesday that the court would not overturn the HRC’s ruling. …-
