Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Governments, generally are in the business of government, not governing. This is most prevalent with leftist regimes.
When you find a country that is actually governed properly for the benefit of it’s citizens … you will find two things … you are either dreaming or you are on another planet.
I almost got in a fight with someone once he told me balancing the budget would bring financial calamity, a minor kyoto bird.
My wife pulled me away,
Years later budget balanced does one liberal say their plan of deficit = 3% of GDP would be better? Like the Montreal protocols the issue went away.
Not one said hey Preston was right. Or did I miss that press release?
Trolls feel free to apologize now, eh, Cat got your tongue,…
for over a decade. 🙂
Are there any reliable polls about the SK election? And I don’t mean online betting with free money. I don’t live in SK so don’t hear much about it.
Who’d you have that almost-dustup with, Right, Grant Devine. Truth is, SK never had to worry about deficits until the then right-wing alternative, the Progressive Conservatives (the Sask Party being their loathsome spawn) marched to power. Douglas was balancing budgets when little Presto was still in short pants.
Bullcrap. Blakeney was running deficits, but hiding the debt in the crowns.

The latest Sask. polls.
Running deficits is wrong, but from 1960 to about 1995 most people preferred the gov’t to run deficits rather than increase taxes or cut services. the NDP in Ontario and BC ran the largest deficits, outside of Quebec, in the entire country. Of course, Manny and all of his NDP friends have excuses for those deficits…
You’re not going to trot out THAT tired, old canard, are you, Kate?? The accumulated deficit, which is made up of the annual deficits in the operating budgets each year, did not exist when the right-wing alternative came to power in 1982. Crown debt at that time was $3.3 billion. It was not hidden. It was not the result of hiding budget deficits. Even if not including budget deficits, the right-wing alternative of the day had driven up Crown debt from $3.3 billion to $$9.4 billion by 1990, all while selling off provincial assets at fire sale prices. Were they hiding THEIR debt IN THE CROWNS?
Has anyone anywhere in this province heard of or actually seen a vandalized NDP lawn sign? ……I didn’t think so.
Well it just reminds me of the old saw about NOT sh$ting on your own doorstep…. basic common sense.
But then we are talking about leftards……
Manny talking about Kate bringing out tired old rhetoric, after he picks a scrap about a government elected in 1982…
That’s rich, (and apparently all they got.)
the way you all defend this centrist sask party is hilarious.
I love to see the way tories coalesce for power, it’s really, really funny.
Wow, that Potts guy from Swift Current just doesn’t know when to stfu:

“You know, out in the oilpatch the men don’t like politicians. We like crooked politicians even less and we don’t want any crooked politicians around here which is why I joined the NDP at the last minute to ask some questions for the men. The men in the patch have my back too.
If the SP keeps pushing it there is going to be some trouble. Anw when I say there is going to be trouble I mean it. Not just your veryday let’s ask a politician some questions kine of trouble…I mean dragging politicians out into the street and tar and feathering them kind of trouble. So keep pushing.”
Greek, there’s nothing old and tired about setting the historical record straight.
manny,
Then set the historical record straight.
Blakeney DID create debt and hid them in the crowns. The PC’s ran it up. Romamow straightened the situation out, but Calvert started the problen up against by creating a phony FSF.
Who has acted worse in this situation; the people that ran up the debt (Devine) or those that had record oil revenues and chose not to correct the problem (Calvert)?
Calvert’s actually running for re-election. Devine isn’t
Some of the PC’s were dishonest. Some NDP’s like Terry Bekolay were less than stellar citizens.
Do the actions of people on one side of the political spectrum reflect the actions of all?
So when you speak of “historical” accuracy, either report it accurately or state the side you are on.
Greek, Crown debt is Crown Corporate debt, the same as any corporate debt. What you and your fellow right-wing revisionists have been trying to spin is that there was some nefarious scheme to run budget deficits and then “hide them in the crowns”. Not true. Didn’t happen.
What did happen is that the one time the right-wing alternative got their grubby hands on power they brought SK to the brink of bankruptcy. The driving force behind that enterprise was ideological zeal.
Nothing I read on this site would suggest that has abated one iota. PCs/SK Party: same crap, different pile. As Dr. Phil would say, the best indicator of future behavior is past behavior.
And of course the “left” being tarred with the same brush NEVER happens here at SDA, does it???
BTW, I do agree Calvert dropped the ball big time in addressing the debt. He totally squandered the opportunity. For that alone he deserves to be turfed. However, for what the right-wing alternative did to this province in the 80s, they are undeserving of power, ever.
manny,
The Crowns are different than other business in the fact that they’re assets are listed as belonging to the government.
If they have a banner year, they pay a dividend to the GRF. No private company does that.
Also, if the government strips them of cash and they have a bad year, they have to go out and borrow because of the government’s actions. The net result is the debt of the province increases.
It’s not even remotely close to the same as a private business.
As for your contention about the “nefarious” plan to hide the debt in the Crowns, were you Blakeney’s confidente at the time? Did he tell you that wasn’t the case? Or are you politically naive enough to believe that the only conspirators that exist are on the right?
Regardless, the fact remains that irrespective of where the debt was after Blakeney left, there was debt. Period.
Devine increased that debt. That cannot be denied.
The total debt that Romanow inherited was the Devine debt combined with the Blakeney debt. Period.
Romanow, through Janice McKinnon, balanced the budget and saved the province from bankruptcy. Period.
Eric Cline introduced the fallacy that was the Fiscal Stabiliztion Fund to cover operating losses when the NDP were not balancing budgets. Period.
Lorne Calvert chose not to pay down the debt in any significant manner. Period.
To say that Brad Wall’s government will be exactly like Devine’s was, is like comparing Romanow’s NDP which was fiscally responsible, to Bob Rae’s NDP, which nearly bankrupted Ontario (only to be fixed the the Conservative government of Mike Harris through many of the same unpopular measures Romanow had to take).
So let’s cut out all the crap. Wall isn’t Devine and Calvert wasn’t Romanow.
Bad managers come from both sides of the political spectrum.
Unless of course, you are so blinded by ideology that you refuse to accept that someone you’re not rooting for might actually do some good…
Didn’t say crown corps are the same as private corporations. They are the same in that they both do borrow money and do it for the same reasons.
The “nefarious” contention is your’s and Kate’s, that there was something underhanded going on, that Blakeney was running budget deficits and “hiding them in the crowns” That, is complete bullcrap, and the onus is on you and your fellow travelers to cough up some evidence to show this happened, not for me to prove something didn’t happen. Prove to me Steve Harper has never been involved in a homosexual liaison in an airport washroom.
No, Wall is not Devine, but the SK party IS the old PC party, even some old faces are still there, ( Toth, D’Autremont), still with all the same old rhetoric, hypocrisies and ideology.
