Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

A Weak Moment for Women In Banning Larry Summers
Susan Estrich
LOS ANGELES — Former Harvard President Larry Summers, a noted economist who served as Secretary of the Treasury during the Clinton administration, was supposed to speak at last week’s dinner for the members of the Board of Regents at the University of California, Davis. His name was on the invitation. Then a group of mostly women faculty members started circulating a petition protesting the invitation, and Summers was uninvited to speak.
It is one crazy world when the man who rules Iran with an iron hand, denies the Holocaust, and vows to destroy Israel can speak at Columbia University, but the former president of Harvard and former Secretary of the Treasury can’t speak at U.C. Davis.
Larry’s mistake, and it certainly was one, was to suggest two years ago at a conference on women in science that perhaps the continuing gender gap in the sciences might be biological rather than social; that perhaps women were innately less interested or less talented when it comes to science and math. {…]
What’s liberal about that? Since when is censorship part of the feminist agenda?
I always thought we liberals were supposed to be in favor of free speech, open discussion, the marketplace of ideas, the notion that good ideas can defeat bad ones. […]
It does us no good to forcibly silence those who say out loud what others believe in private. […]
Estrich’s books include the just published “Soulless,” “The Case for Hillary Clinton,” “How to Get Into Law School,” “Sex & Power,” “Real Rape,” “Getting Away with Murder: How Politics Is Destroying the Criminal Justice System” and “Making the Case for Yourself: A Diet Book for Smart Women.”

Stéphane Dion and the Liberals just had a week from hell
The last two weeks, beginning with the drubbing the Liberals took in the three Quebec by-elections, have not been kind to Stéphane Dion. He can only hope he is bottoming out and that he can avoid a fall election. He needs time to stabilize a very bad situation and regain his footing. …-

Just another little tidbit from the perpetually wrong MSM: For the benefit of the headline skimmers … courtesy of National Newswatch….
Ottawa Citizen writer David Pugliese, gets this Headline : “Military wants to replace spy plane sooner, not later” to his story on the plans to retire and replace the old Aurora Reconnaissance aircraft.
Now I did not see anywhere in the article any reference to the term SPY used by the writer and certainly in fact the Aurora never held any SPY role ever.
So it seems like a case of the Ottawa Citizen editorial staff creating a false and misleading idea about our military’s role and the reasons we need this kind of equipment.
Just exactly what motivates these twits?

The 16 year old student who took the video of the girl being beaten was also beaten by guards who are now attempting to frame him with “assault on an officer”.
This is becoming all too common in the US as “security” companies expand exponentially and take on police powers and hire out as a private police force…they must be starving for personel as they appear to be recruiting from the bottom of the barrel. A thug in a uniform is still a thug.

Right now the oppressive regime in Myanmar, or Burma, is once more featuring prominently in the news. The hated regime represents everything that left wing political parties abhor: excessive brutal force used to suppress the poor population, widespread censorship, strict military rule. You name it, the Burmese government does it. But… the government isn’t a right wing dictatorship at all. It is a socialist dictatorship!

Parachuting candidates in, handpicking nominees and cheating/buying of votes for riding nominees is so very counter productive.
A candidate sells memberships and the candidate that sells the most memberships would indicate that they have the most support in the riding and thus the most likelihood of winning in the general election. For someone to be appointed, they have no feet on the ground, no basis for support in the general election other than name brand recognition of the party or of the candidate.
By all means encourage Dion to appoint “star” candidates. His judgement has proven to be suspect so far. The brand support of Liberal is equally suspect. Let them live in fairyland until after the next election.

Another tremendous column from Caroline Glick:
Ahmadinejad’s overlooked message
Ahmadinejad gave two major addresses this week – at Columbia University and at the UN General Assembly. He devoted both to putting forward his vision for global Islamic domination. And while the Western media sought hidden meanings and signals for peaceful intentions in his words, the fact is that on both occasions, Ahmadinejad made absolutely clear that his vision of Islamic domination cannot coexist in any manner with Western civilization. Consequently, Ahmadinejad’s statements were not negotiating stances. They were the direct consequence of the world view he propounds. As such, they are non-negotiable.
…
THE POINT in all of this couldn’t be clearer. And Ahmadinejad made it at every opportunity. The Free World today finds itself embroiled in an ideological war for its very survival. Our enemies – whether Shi’ite or Sunni – are followers of a totalitarian ideology based on Islam which tells them that Allah wishes to rule the world through them. Israel is a central front in this war. Given the weakness of Western support for the Jews, jihadists see attacking Israel as a strategic tool for eroding the West’s ideological defenses and shoring up their supporters throughout the world.

@Ted Walker
I saw the story on the Taliban killing of a 15 year-old as well. All for being discovered with US dollars on him.
As I write this I can find nothing at CBCPravda on this. Big surprise now that they are peddling their “Peace in our time with the Taliban” line along with the NDP.
However, CBCPravda did find space on their site for this little anti-military tidbit:
“More Canadian injuries, fewer reported”

Just some random observations about the stupidity floating around in the great white north, eh.
– According to the Ottawa Citizen, Canada has spy planes???
– the Mop & Pail is asking the question that the Taliban have already given the Afghanistan government: pound salt. So why is the Canadian MSM asking?
– the same Mop & Pail hails the grassroots nomination of one conservative over another as a “knockdown victory”. Maybe it is a new idea for Lieberals and Dippers but conservatives have been known to listen to the will of the people and voters. No “one turd of das candidates will be womens” crap.

In search of eco-salvation
Many religions are now more likely to preach about saving the planet than saving souls.
These days, moralisers find it easier to make people feel guilty about their impact on the environment than about committing one of the seven deadly sins. Not surprisingly, many religious institutions are busy reinventing themselves by promoting ecological virtues and preaching against the eco-sins of polluters. […]

Islamic Fundamentalism and the Sex Slave Trade in Iran
Donna M. Hughes
Professor & Carlson Endowed Chair
Women’s Studies Program
University of Rhode Island
A measure of Islamic fundamentalists’ success in controlling society is the depth and totality with which they suppress the freedom and rights of women. In Iran for 25 years, the ruling mullahs have enforced humiliating and sadistic rules and punishments on women and girls, enslaving them in a gender apartheid system of segregation, forced veiling, second-class status, lashing, and stoning to death.
Joining a global trend, the fundamentalists have added another way to dehumanize women and girls: buying and selling them for prostitution. Exact numbers of victims are impossible to obtain, but according to an official source in Tehran, there has been a 635 percent increase in the number of teenage girls in prostitution. The magnitude of this statistic conveys how rapidly this form of abuse has grown. In Tehran, there are an estimated 84,000 women and girls in prostitution, many of them are on the streets, others are in the 250 brothels that reportedly operate in the city. The trade is also international: thousands of Iranian women and girls have been sold into sexual slavery abroad.
For the whole thing: http://www.uri.edu/artsci/wms/hughes/iran_sex_slave_trade
Yes, andycanuck, I thought the Citizen article on the hiring of Joan Tintor was rather foolish. Since when are bloggers ineligible for Federal contracts? Unlike journalists, they don’t get paid to blog. Also, the contract was $20,000 which keeps it within the threshold for hiring without competition. (Among other things, it’s usually not worth the time and expense of running an open competition for smaller contracts.) So what exactly is the story here?
re: Elizabeth and “this should amuse Kate”.
I get it now, meaningful debate and dialog is good until some conservatives show up then they are “attacking”. You would think that rabble is a parody site except for the fact that they are scarey real. The fact that 4 of the 7 comments are by moderators tells me a lot about the volume of traffic they get. The fact that they are basically union (CUPE, CAW, etc) financed ensures an unbiased spin. \\sarc

All defendants acquitted in tainted blood trial
All defendants, including former Canadian Red Cross chief Dr. Roger Perrault, have been acquitted of all charges in the worst public health disaster in Canadian history. (via jacks’ newswatch) …-
The tainted blood death trail: Canadian Liberals, including ex-PM Paul Martin, Jr., Allan Rock … US ex-president Clinton …
MURRAY DOBBIN, GLOBE AND MAIL, 2003 – It is a story that will not – and should not – die. The tainted-blood scandal is tale of bureaucratic indifference, corporate greed and regulatory failure resulting in hundreds of needless deaths from AIDS and the equally preventable infection of thousands with hepatitis C. An investigation by The Kansas City Star newspaper has jolted the story back to life in North America. Ironic that the reports coincide with the coronation of Paul Martin as Liberal leader, because Mr. Martin has a connection to this story.
Blame for the suffering of innocent Canadians spreads far and wide, to virtually every government agency involved, as well as the private companies providing blood and blood products. The Kansas City Star report included Canadian documentation showing that the Red Cross, as early as 1981, knew that a test was available to screen blood for hepatitis C – but while the U.S. began using the test in 1986, it wasn’t used here until 1990.
The Liberal government denied compensation to those infected before 1986, claiming that no test was available before then. That now turns out to be false. Paul Martin was on the board of the Canadian Development Corporation from 1981-1987, during the time hemophiliacs were infected with tainted blood. The CDC was the holding company for the private company, Connaught Laboratories, the major supplier of blood products in Canada, specifically Factor VIII used by hemophiliacs. . .
Evaluations of the safety of U.S.-sourced blood supplies were sent to Connaught Laboratories but were never even read by its senior officials. Instead, Connaught kept buying blood from a Montreal blood broker, the only company in the world still buying blood from U.S. prisons. […]
JUNE 1999
KILLER BLOOD: While the American media continues to shut its eyes to the 1980s flow of deadly blood from Clinton’s Arkansas prisons to Canadian patients, the story remains big up north. Latest development: Liberal leadership contender Paul Martin was on the board of a corporation involved in the distribution of tainted blood. …-
