Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Don Newman is Canada’s answer to Dan Rather. An aging, puffed up self important old dinosaur spinning the same old spin, not realizing much of the world has passed him by – a long time ago.
I’ve heard of this Harper fellow. He confiscates a huge chunk of my paycheque every two weeks to further the cause of conservatism. But who’s this Don Newman? And what’s a CBC? Is that a bank?
Alan if you pay taxes you pay 70$ to the CBC too.
Hardly a bank more like a cheque cashing joint they take and you get less back.
Yes, it’s interesting how badly our Canadian journalists are out-of-touch with reality.
The mainstream old guard journalists and their new clones (after all, they’ll only hire clones) all operate in an out-of-date perspective. Almost all of them, furthermore, are Liberals.
Their view of Canada is a centralist govt, focused around Ontario and Quebec, governed by one party, the Liberals. This mindset, operating in post WWII went through a crisis in the 70s, when one part of that Set, Quebec, threatened to separate. This grew into the PQ and Bloc. Ontario was viewed as the key to stability of this Ontario-Quebec form of Canada. And, the Liberals therefore dominated Ontario – and Quebec.
But, the structure of Canada has changed. These MSM old guard don’t realize it; they still operate in the centrist Ontario-Quebec frame.
Quebec has changed – it’s moved out of the federalist-separatist mindset – that’s evident with the rise of the ADQ and the dissolution of the PQ and Bloc. Quebec is now focused on its economy, entrepreneurship, self-governance etc.
Ontario is bereft. It has no longer has a national role. It is no longer the ‘We Alone Keep Canada Together’ which We Do by pandering to Quebec. Its economic might has shifted to the West. The MSM old guard completely ignore the West; the only thing they know about it is ‘oil sands’.
Quebec managed to stay Liberal during Chretien’s era by the Liberals laundering taxpayer money to fund work in their ridings. The Liberals didn’t raise money for their party on their own; we can see how their coffers are now bare – without their having access to the taxpayers’ money.
Canada managed to stay Liberal during Chretien’s era by the disarray of the opposition and by his control of Quebec via taxpayer money theft.
But, the old guard MSM haven’t noticed, or refuse to acknowledge the deep infrastructural changes in Canada. It’s no longer a country focused around Ontario-Quebec. The argument is no longer about separation but about left vs right policies. The economy has shifted west – and that economy is most certainly not just about oil.
Finally – The supposition that Harper moved the site of the press meetings to the foyer to ‘look like the White House’ is nonsense and pure maliciousness. A supposition dreamt up in the true fashion of the Liberal – and their rampant anti-Americanism.
Following this ‘stuck on stupid’ mentality of the MSM pundits – the MSM view of McGuinty in Ontario, is ‘because he’s a Liberal, he’s right for us’. Ontario needs to wake up; its old role is over.
Spot on ET.
Isn’t nasty when the political world suffers a paradigm shift?
Couldn’t happen to a ‘nicer’ bunch.
Cheers
HRHuffandPuff Don Newman,
just another CBCpravda hack.
CBCpravda “All Liberal , All the Time”
It’s Dan Rather…..who cares what he has to say? The dude couldn’t get a straight job if his life depended on it.
MSM = ‘stuck on stupid’ i like it!
Conservatives would be happy to strike a compromise.
We’ll gladly urge the PM to go back to the old way of meeting with the press if the CBC will relinquish all claims to taxpayers’ funding.
Ahhh the endless hubris of media aristocracy….Like a whore assuming the piety of of a nun.
Newman’s arrogant presumption insinuates that this 4th estate “caring” about what the PM “thinks” is an extention of the media’s function as the people’s watch dog (a defacto people’s advocate). 🙂
That effrontery is akin to a Pimp being the watch dog for the marital fidelity of customer’s his whores corrput.
…As long as we’re invoking presumptive protocol, the humorous irony and hypocrisy of the Canadian media presuming respectability via its record as a public watch dog is too laughable to openly discuss…perhaps this is why Newman speaks of it in veiled innuendo.
When the Canadian MSM of the past 4 decades is eulogized, protecting the public from the disastrous social experimenting of their socialist Liberal cronies will loom large in condemning their lack of effectiveness as a “watch dog” of Canadian’s interests.
Has anyone else noticed that Don looks like a Muppet? I can’t even watch him on TV anymore because I just break out laughing…
/Maybe it’s me
The PPG’s job is to report what goes in parliament, and subseqent issues, not to fuel future Liberal popularity contests. Since day one, Stephen Harper has been under attack by the CBC, and the PPG. Retribution is simple. Get rid of the CBC!
Don Newman has never risen to the stature of Dan Rather, physically or professionally. A perennially pompous little twit. Even Jerry Springer makes Newman look good.
Blew that last line: “Newman makes even Jerry Springer look good…” (Fri night after a hard week, what can I say…?)
Hahahahaha…
I’d like to see Newman’s face reading the Taylor piece!!
Newman admitted today that he got a lot of flak for his coverage of dion re the by-election, both pre and post election. He said he thought that dion’s troubles were the story.
Also, Susan Delacourt said Harper is cuddley.
No group has done more ‘change’ Canada than our press corp. Yet they bark and wail at an elected prime minister merely changing the venue of their stag fest sessions.
What a joke.
Oops .. that should be slag fest.
“What the prime minister thinks”
It’s been so long since we had a prime minister that actually does think that twerps like Don ‘I see my senate seat blowing away in the wind’ Newman can’t deal with it.
The PPG continues to make the PPG the story!
The day the PPG and other MSM begin dissecting and presenting issues for the Canadian public without built in leftist bias, that will be the day they may start to regain trust of their readers and viewers.
And until that comes to pass (if ever) my list of Liberal “lickspittle” remains intact, and the CBC is there in total, Don Newman included.
“Prime Minister Stephen Harper has gone out of his way to let the reporters in the Parliamentary Press Gallery who cover him know that he doesn’t care very much about what they think.”
Who does?
Jon…
The Swedish chef! Newman needs to grow a bushy mustache, but the eyes are about right.
Newman wanted to be a Senator sitting on a nice comfy fur..as of about now…Don laments..if only the Liberanos had won the last election…remember the good old days we we all laughed as we took the taxpayers of Canada for fools and spent their money on ourselves and our friends without a care in the world…..I like your analogy William L. MacKenzie!
Good job Stephan Taylor! I don’t watch old wretch, Newman very often because I cannnot take very much of that icky, smoozzy/boozie, ‘incrowd’ atmosphere he tries to create, however I do appreciate Stephan Tayor’s rip up of old Don’s ‘in depth anayalis’ of what the Press Galley should do about the Prime Minister!
What a joke they are – we get the real news here at sda and other web sites. Yap to the wind Newman!
Does the PPG realizes that no one cares about what they think. Assuming the PPG is capable of thought. Most of what I hear from them is worn out Liberal talking points.
Newman is just pissed that someone married Brison, before he could.
Vindictive bitch!
30 years ago, any news I received about politics and gov’t from Ottawa often came through Donnnn Newwwwman.
(I shudder now, as I thought I was better “informed” than those who didn’t watch DN)
Today I obtain the real story by comparing many sources. Ninety percent of it from the net. Such as;
Lorrie Golstein
Terrence Corcoran
Kate
Peter Foster
Joel Johannesen
Steve McIntyre
Andrew Coyne
Steve Janke
And yes, even the Warrenator — sometimes not too bad. That is, when he is not blinded by the ‘whats in it for me syndrome’.
As soon as members of the MSM start retching about their own insignificance…they’re are finally realizing the truth….about time…
I like ET’s comment, except for this:
“The economy has shifted west – and that economy is most certainly not just about oil.”
Alberta and Canada’s economy is all about oil right now, obviously. It may be a diverse economy, but let’s not kid ourselves about what’s fueling it.
Saskatchewan could possibly begin trying to catch up to Alberta’s economic power pending the upcoming election, yet I still have doubts about that happening…
Don Newman is the only person I know who speaks without moving his upper lip.
I always figure he wore it out kissing up to Liberal butts.
BKG
The PPG just doesn’t get it! Their private, silly little feud with Stephen Harper has been met with a ear splitting yawn by the voting public. Don Newman, Craig Oliver, Peter Mansbridge et al have no idea what words like unbiased and objective mean, or how they should be applied to the actions of the media. These jokers all have their lips planted firmly on Liberal party asses with hopes of one day being appointed Governor General, or at the very least a Senate seat. I’ll stop and listen anyday to something Stephen Harper has to say before I’ll listen to any of these PPG twits.
“Has anyone else noticed that Don looks like a Muppet? I can’t even watch him on TV anymore because I just break out laughing…”
I’ve never thought of him as a muppet, but there is something puppet like about the way he speaks. His jaw is wired differently from normal so it just seems to flap, flap, flap while he’s pontificating.
It seem to me that Stockwell Day tried to use the press room – to me it appeared to ipart a little structure and some dignity, compared to those rediculuous ‘scrums’.
He was immediately accused by the PPG of going down to the WINE CELLAR. Big JOKE!! They laughed for days about that one.
Finally someone has taken the initiative to treat these fools as they are.
Its not that difficult to get the message out and it appears that there are fewer misinterpretations.
CRB
What an absolutely disgusting dispicable rant! Most psychologists would call it a victim statement, “woe is me, everyone hates me, the world owes me”. Our tax dollars not so very hard at work, it’s very sad indeed.
Newman et al are pi$$ed off now the Prime Minister of Canada is calling the shots. It’s a tough life in the real world boys and they had better get used to it real soon.
marionettes don’t move their upper lips. They don’t other attaching a string to that part.
Saskatchewan could possibly begin trying to catch up to Alberta’s economic power.
I have stocks in uranium, none o’ that in
Alberta
Newman and the Press Gallery Prigs are irrelevant, who cares what THEY think. Harper has put them in their place and it’s long overdue.
It’s tough sledding for the lot of them, can’t get the easy scoops, can’t ask stupid questions to embarrass, no free booze and palsy-walsy schmoozing with MP’s in return for favors.
They’re missing their Liberals and they’re starting to attack Dion thinking they’ll have a better chance at power with someone else, Iggy or even the vacuous Trudeau.

Want to keep Canada Conservative? Use some of that oil money to start some national conservative media. People in the East have been blessed by media that make the CBC look like a voice of reason and integrity. Down here they tell people the West is holding us back and Quebec keeps the country together. That taxes are too low. That Liberals are honest.
Feel our pain.
I just love the unstated culture of entitlement in the Ottawa press gallery….they really believe they are senators in waiting 😀
I’m surprised nobody’ picked up on Newman’s comment that:
“Harper has receieved generally benign coverage.”
If he thinks the coverage of Harper and this government has been ‘benign’, he’s more delusional than I thought.
Since this govenment was sworn in is has been one, long, continuous, monotonous string of surly, snide, childish potshots by members of the MSM and particularly the PPG.
If this unrelenting character assination and outrageous spin doctoring is ‘benign’, I wonder how low they’ll go during the next election (although watch the CBC change their tune slightly if it looks like a Conservative majority…they’ll be sucking up for thier lives)
