So, the first time since who knows when that Delisle makes the national news and where am I? Five hours to the south east, enjoying a weekend visiting family (and getting together with a few Saskbloggers).

Judging by anecdotal reports and the number of large trees snapped and uprooted, something more than a typical prairie wind storm (plow wind or mini-tornados?) rolled through around 3 am on Saturday morning. There were reports of baseball sized hail in the area.

I won't complain about caraganas for a while. The flexible, rooftop-high weeds surrounding much of my yard probably helped to shield the house and ancient Manitoba maples from the brunt of the wind. No shingles gone, no damage aside from a few managable branches down.

Lance (Catprint In The Mash) wasn't quite as lucky - at his house a large tree went down, taking out the neighbor's dog run (no dog) in the process, and he lost about 1/3 of the shingles on the south side of his house. His server is also off line, so don't bother clicking the link for a day or two. Another home had their garage moved from its foundation.

Now that my little report is over, the thread is open for tips.

My fundamentalist Christian friend tells me that God MUST be VERY unhappy with something that is going on in Delisle.

He said the same thing when New Orleans was hit with the hurricane as God's retribution for all of the decandent sin and excess that happens there because of Mardi Gras. He had no specific knowledge of what the problem in Delisle is exactly!

Don't give the carraganas any credit for anything. They are still hateful and undesirable. I doubt they did much to save your property. If your house can withstand their presence no ordinary plow wind is going to do much harm. A pox on them and the houses of the progeny of their originator. Probably socialists anyway.

Kate,

Tell Lance that storms like that are the reason that "Data Centres" exist.

I know it can be cool to say "I've got my own server in my house" but it doesn't look so good when it goes offline.

I'm happy that our data centre is wired with fibre on multiple backbones, is climatically controlled, and has two methods of power backup including a diesel generator - all for the sake of redundancy. Remember that the Internet was built to withstand nuclear war....but is only as strong as the weakest link.

In other news....we had friends from Saskatoon in the area and had major hail damage to their vehicle. Nasty, unforecast, and horribly nocturnal.

In the National Post, Monday

An Ontario human rights commission held a go-cart track to pay (an undisclosed amount) to a Sikh wearing a turban who was barred from renting a go-cart in 200l.

Apparently a case is coming up in Nov regarding a Sikh wearing a turban and riding a motorcycle without a helmet.

It seems that Manitoba and BC already have provisions in the highway traffic act exempting Sikhs wearing turbans while riding motorcycles.

So much for reasonable accommodation. Apparently Sikhs not wearing turbans and the rest of us are legally required to wear helmets while riding motorcycles. There is something very wrong with this picture.

Anti-War Activist Says She'll Run Against House Speaker Unless Bush Impeachment Is Pursued(AP)
Cindy Sheehan, the slain soldier's mother whose attacks on President Bush made her a darling of the anti-war movement, has a new target: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Sheehan, who announced in late May that she was departing the peace movement, said she decided to run against Pelosi unless the congresswoman moves to oust President Bush in the next two weeks.

An example of how the Media 'Dumbs-Down' the news:

This article explains how glaciers grow, live, melt, rejuvinate, slide, calf ...

http://ff.org/centers/csspp/library/co2weekly/20070321/20070321_01.html

It is many paragraphs long. Who said glaciers were a simple phenonmena ??

[ To understand the relationship between global warming and the break down of ice-sheets it is really necessary to know how ice-sheets work. Ice-sheets do not simply grow and melt in response to average global temperature. Anyone with this naïve view would have difficulty in explaining why glaciation has been present in the southern hemisphere for about 30 million years, and in the
northern hemisphere for only 3 million years.]

[ In the case of ice-sheets it may take many thousands of years for ice to flow from the accumulation area to the melting area. The balance between movement and melting therefore does not relate simply to today's climate, but to the climate thousands of years ago.]

[ Where ice-sheets or individual glaciers reach the sea, the ice floats and eventually breaks off to form icebergs. This is inevitable so long as glaciers reach the sea. In the southern hemisphere Captain Cook saw icebergs on his search for the great south land. Ice-bergs have long been familiar to sailors in the northern hemisphere, and the Titanic struck one that had drifted farther south than usual in 1912. The actual break is a sudden, one-off event, but can be built into a typical greenhouse-horror scenario. Some weeks ago, when a piece of the Greenland ice shelf broke away, the scientists interviewed all said they were surprised at how suddenly it happened. But how else but suddenly would a piece of ice shelf break off! And this was an area that was ice free before the Little Ice Age, and possibly after as well - Arctic explorers used to get their ships a lot closer to northern Greenland than you could now.] *) Emeritus Professor Cliff Ollier., D.Sc. And how would the media report on this ??

IRAQ: Ministry to insure and protect professors

BAGHDAD, 8 July 2007 (IRIN) - The Iraqi Ministry of Finance is to give life insurance to university professors following an increase in the number of lecturers leaving the country because of violence. The initiative will also include providing university teaching staff with personal bodyguards. “Professors are being targeted on a daily basis and they are fleeing the country, leaving a gap in the educational system,” said Marwan Imad, a press officer for the finance ministry. “They will be offered life insurance and bodyguards chosen by themselves.” “They will receive a special budget so that they can hire bodyguards from...-

Well, we libertarians (sorry Kathy Shaidle) think the Sikhs are right, for the wrong reason of course. To use Kate's delightful phrase, you have to be rock-hard-stupid to ride a motorcycle helmetless but that is your perogative. And the collectivist argument about the state's medical expenses is spurious. Dead helmetless riders, on a net basis, probably save the welfare state a lot of dough.

All of this raghead nonsense could be avoided by the judicious use of liability disclaimers with teeth. You wanna risk getting mangled in machinery with your head towel, fine, sign here. Simple.

Second Chances [Michel Yon on the Ground in Baqubah]
Michael Yon ^ | 7/9/07
When context is other people’s children

As I write these words just a few miles from the graves I saw, the resulting controversy about whether what the man said was true, or whether his words should have been written if the writer couldn’t verify them, seems precious. There is no imaginary line of credulity that al Qaeda might cross should it go from beheading children to baking them.

No unnamed Iraqi stringer claimed that al Qaeda had taken over Baqubah. Al Qaeda said this through the press. I sit writing these words in Diyala Province just a short drive from where the self-proclaimed leader of al Qaeda in Iraq was killed by a bomb delivered by a US warplane. Al Qaeda: the organization that gleefully bragged about murdering roughly 3,000 people by smashing jets full of civilians into buildings and earth. Al Qaeda in Iraq: who proudly broadcast their penchant for sawing off the heads of living breathing people, and in such a manner as to ensure lots of spurting blood and gurgles of final pain, in some cases with the added flourish of the executioner raising up the severed head and squealing excitedly.

These are the same terrorists I often come face to face with: not on television or in magazines, but on bloodstained streets ablaze with human carnage. I remember the charred corpse of a small Iraqi boy. I remember the wailing Iraqi parents and countless other scenes that I am likely to see again and again. Back in 2005, terrorists here were intentionally attacking children. I shot the photo below on a day when they drove a car bomb through a crowd of children who had run out to American soldiers on patrol. ...-

DaimlerChrysler Canada to customers: sorry our cars sip so much gas, here's 20 cents

Last week, DaimlerChrysler Canada announced a series of incentives for new car buyers and leasers, including an employee price discount and a deal with Petro-Canada for 20 cents off per liter of gas for one year (of *average driving*).

So, instead of making higher-mileage vehicles, DaimlerChrysler is giving buyers a little relief at the pump for 12 months. After that, buyers are on their own.

Eligible vehicles = all 2006 models, all 2007 models (except Dodge Caliber, Jeep Compass, Jeep Patriot, Jeep Wrangler and Dodge Sprinter) and the 2008 Dodge Avenger.

Buenos Aires Gets First Snow Since 1918

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) - Thousands of Argentines cheered and threw snowballs in the streets of Buenos Aires on Monday as the capital's first major snowfall since 1918 spread a thin white mantle across the region. Wet snow fell for hours in the Argentine capital, accumulating in a mushy but thin white layer late Monday, after freezing air from Antarctica collided with a moisture-laden low pressure system that blanketed higher elevations in western and central Argentina with snow. It's Live Earth Versus Africa (Tell Algore we need gas & electricity - the dung is killing us)
AllAfrica ^ | 7/09/07 | Kofi Bentil

Few people in Africa will get to see Al Gore and his troupe of rock-star ecologists strutting their stuff during the series of Live Earth concerts this weekend --because most have neither television nor electricity.

That's just as well, because they would be aghast at LiveEarth's bizarre message. In Africa, we have much more serious things to worry about than climate change.

Indeed, if they achieve their objective the concerts will have done harm to the people of Africa.

Britain's former Secretary of State for the Environment, David Miliband, recently said that the rest of the world cannot aspire to the UK's standard of living because: "If the world were to have the same living standards as we have in the UK, then we'd need three planets to support us.

"Presumably Mr Miliband would disagree with Indira Ghandi, who famously said, "poverty is the greatest polluter." Miliband was replaced by Hilary Benn, who as Minister for International Development ran the Department for International Development (DfID). One might have thought that DfID would have supported economic development as a means of escaping from poverty and pollution.

But in its Rough Guide to a Better World it advocates "Development by Dung" and claims that "As poor countries develop, it is essential that they do not follow the same failed patterns of energy use." So it's dung not diesel for Africa--while India and China soar ahead because they are too big, and nuclear-armed, to stop.

Even if we accept that global warming may have a significant effect on our climate, limiting the use of fossil fuels in Africa would be counterproductive. Respiratory infections are the leading cause of childhood deaths on my continent, mainly from inhaling the smoke produced by burning wood and dung in our quaint mud huts.

Why do we burn these "renewable" but very dirty fuels? Not because we have some desire to save the Earth. No, sir. It is because we don't have access to natural gas or electricity.

The second leading cause of childhood deaths is not malaria or AIDS, it is diarrhoea, caused by drinking dirty water. Why is our water dirty? Mainly because we lack cheap, efficient means of pumping and cleaning it. That requires fossil fuels--either directly or to produce electricity.

An underlying cause of many health problems in Africa is malnutrition. This is a consequence both of inefficient farming and poor food distribution. To rectify this situation will mean using cheap and relatively clean fuels, such as gasoline and diesel.

(Of course we also need better roads--which can only be built using machines that burn... fossil fuels.)

Our already poor and struggling countries are being sucked into a giant movement to save the Earth--with aid money as the carrot and the stick. If we are cajoled into using more expensive "renewable" forms of energy, we will remain uncompetitive and our rates of economic growth will remain low or shrinking.

That would be a tragedy because economic growth has been shown to be the best way to reduce poverty and improve health. Please, Europe and America, spare us! You can cut your own emissions if you want, but don't tell us what to do. We really have much more serious and urgent threats to deal with. ...-

Syria Invades Lebanon

By Michael J. Totten
A few days ago Lebanese daily newspaper Al Mustaqbal quietly reported a limited Syrian invasion of Lebanon. (Via Naharnet.)

Syrian troops on Thursday reportedly have penetrated three kilometers into Lebanese territories, taking up positions in the mountains near Yanta in east Lebanon's Bekaa Valley.

The daily Al Mustaqbal, citing sources who confirmed the cross-border penetration, did not say when the procedure in the Fahs Hill overlooking Deir al-Ashaer in the Rashaya province took place.
The sources said Syrian troops, backed by bulldozers, were fortifying positions "in more than one area" along the Lebanese border, erecting earth mounds and digging "hundreds" of trenches and individual bunkers.

This happened immediately before I left town for two days. When I returned I was surprised to find no mention of this whatsoever anywhere else in the media. I assumed the story had to be false. How could Syria invade three kilometers into any region of Lebanon without triggering a diplomatic and media storm?

Iraqi FM: Turkey massing 140,000 troops

By BUSHRA JUHI, Associated Press Writer Mon Jul 9, 10:25 AM ET

BAGHDAD - Turkey has massed 140,000 soldiers on its border with northern Iraq, Iraq's foreign minister said Monday, calling the neighboring country's fears of Kurdish rebels based there "legitimate" but better resolved through negotiation.

The Turkish military had no comment to the remarks by Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, a Kurd from northern Iraq, and it was unclear where he got the figures. If they are accurate, Turkey would have nearly as many soldiers along its border with Iraq as the 155,000 troops which the U.S. has in the country.
