Has anyone else seen the TV commercial where Dr. Fruitfly aka David Suzuki is disconnecting someone's beer fridge in his basement? This is Fruitfly's statement: "This fridge uses 1250 kwH per year; that's about $150".
Now, I'm just an engineer and an MBA, so I'm sure my mathematical skills are no match for an aging geneticist, but it seems to me that works out to approximately $0.12/kwH. In Ontario, we're paying about $0.065/kwH as consumers. Is anyone else in the country paying 12 cents for a kwH, or is this just another case of irresponsible exaggeration by Dr. Fruitfly?
I think your calculations are right. The fruitfly is wrong, but what the hell, he's only trying get you to buy more beer. Wait until he figures out that making beer releases CO2.
So we have a new commissioner of the RCMP - from outside of the force by the name of Elliot. Hopefully, not a left-over from the Mulroney crowd.
I suppose he is fluently bilingual and who knows what else. Really a sad day when the appointment has been chosen from the outside and it is bound to negatively affect morale.
It is saying very clearly that there is nobody within the ranks of Staff Sergeants or Inspectors that have the capability and the will to turn things around. There are probably even few within the upper ranks as well who, if given their head, could turn things around better than someone from the outside.
And here we thought that the RCMP had become to political at the top. Now it is even more political and is bound to get worse.

ISLAMABAD, July 6 (Reuters) - Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf's plane was fired on as it took off on Friday from a military airfield in Rawalpindi, an intelligence officer said, contradicting official denials.
Musharraf's plane arrived safely in the southwestern town of Turbat, where the president visited flood victims, and the military denied there had been any attack.
But an intelligence official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said there had been an unsuccessful attempt on Musharraf's life, and no arrests were made.

Mountie acted in good faith classifying writer as informant, judge rules
An Ontario Superior Court judge has ruled that a senior Mountie acted in good faith when he decided to classify journalist Stevie Cameron as a confidential informant, [...]
Dehumanizing the enemy is often a tactic in waging war, however, in the case of radical muslims it's not necessary.
They're not human to begin with (from LGF):
Speaking through an American interpreter, Lieutenant David Wallach who is a native Arabic speaker, the Iraqi official related how al Qaeda united these gangs who then became absorbed into “al Qaeda.” They recruited boys born during the years 1991, 92 and 93 who were each given weapons, including pistols, a bicycle and a phone (with phone cards paid) and a salary of $100 per month, all courtesy of al Qaeda. These boys were used for kidnapping, torturing and murdering people.
At first, he said, they would only target Shia, but over time the new al Qaeda directed attacks against Sunni, and then anyone who thought differently. The official reported that on a couple of occasions in Baqubah, al Qaeda invited to lunch families they wanted to convert to their way of thinking. In each instance, the family had a boy, he said, who was about 11-years-old. As LT David Wallach interpreted the man’s words, I saw Wallach go blank and silent. He stopped interpreting for a moment. I asked Wallach, “What did he say?” Wallach said that at these luncheons, the families were sat down to eat. And then their boy was brought in with his mouth stuffed. The boy had been baked. Al Qaeda served the boy to his family.

Desperate Clerics Hide Behind Children in Islamabad
On day three of the Red Mosque seige in Islamabad, radicals used women and children as human shields against the advancing Pakistani military. With Friday prayers on the horizon, more trouble may be ahead.
A radical Islamic student in Pakistan in a police van after surrendering on Thursday. Increasingly desperate clerics at Islamabad's hard-line Lal Masijd, or Red Mosque, used women and children as human shields against the approaching Pakistani military, as the third day of the siege saw repeated fire fights and ground-shaking explosions.
The blasts, which started before dawn, were thought to be military artillery or explosives used to break down the high walls of the fortified compound as Pakistani forces continue trying to force out hundreds of radical students holed up inside.
Militants in the mosque exchanged rifle and automatic gunfire throughout the day with the army and paramilitaries who had penned them in and cut off all supplies. Military Cobra helicopters hovered overhead, drawing occasional fire from the besieged compound.
Government officials and aid workers, who entered the mosque to bring out the dead, said the remaining students, were being held hostage by increasingly desperate clerics.
"Some of the students are wounded and still the clerics are not allowing them out to get medical care," said Nisar Hasnain, a relief worker with the Khubaib Foundation, who went into the mosque compound to attend to the wounded and bring out the dead. ...- http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1861876/posts

That clock enabled Clair Patterson, an American geochemist who died as recently as 1995, to solve the mystery that had baffled Aristotle and Newton and Kelvin. The immensity of the figure is staggering, not least because it renders absurd all anthropocentric accounts of the Creation and the universe. But if "A Natural History of Time" teaches one lesson, it is that any attempt to shortcircuit the truth, in the name of a consoling myth, is destined to fail. Worse, it is an insult to human dignity. If there is anything miraculous about mankind, it is not our Scriptures, but our ability to read the text of the world. A Reuters photographer saw two large guns mounted on the roof of a two-storey house in the congested area close to the airport, and a neighbour said he heard the firing. ...-

MP says time to 'put the penny to rest'
If Pat Martin gets his way, you'll never again have need of a penny. The NDP MP for Winnipeg Centre is drafting a private member's bill to discontinue the use of the one-cent coin. (national newswatch)
"The challenge of cross-cultural interpretation will increase next month when the Quebec-based Van Doos take over command. Bilingual military brass will have to be placed in every convoy because Mohammed knows of no French-speaking Pashto interpreters.
But without someone to bridge the linguistic divide, any Canadian message of hope to the locals will be meaningless if our offers are lost in translation."
Someone correct me if I'm wrong. but the officers are all bilingual.

Australia abolished the penny years ago and I didn't miss it when I was there although the lack of a quarter was a bit confusing (5, 10, 20, 50, $1 & $2).

"Some of the students are wounded and still the clerics are not allowing them out to get medical care," said Nisar Hasnain, a relief worker with the Khubaib Foundation, who went into the mosque compound to attend to the wounded and bring out the dead. ...-

Dating the Earth
[...]
... radioactivity offered the earth-clock that scientists had long been searching for.
That clock enabled Clair Patterson, an American geochemist who died as recently as 1995, to solve the mystery that had baffled Aristotle and Newton and Kelvin. By analyzing samples of terrestrial lead, and comparing them to lead from the great meteorite that created the Meteor Crater in Arizona, Patterson concluded that the Earth was formed 4.55 billion years ago. In a time when obscurantism speaks louder and louder, Mr. Richet reminds us that the truth, if anything, is what will set us free. ...-

Welcome to the new Canada.
Now taking shape at Highway 427 and Finch Ave., it comes in the form of one of the most extraordinary buildings ever seen in this country. Though the name, Swaminarayan Mandir, won't mean much to most Canadians, no one, not even those speeding by in cars and trucks, could help but notice this remarkable structure....
...Things won't change overnight, but don't forget, first we shape our buildings, and then they shape us....
