"Taliban" Jack may well spellbind the muslim Taliban jihadis on the merits of the instant benefit of "same sex marriage" rather than exploding now and running the risk of no virgins left for them in the hereafter.
You go Jack!
Yeah; sure: let's go talk to people who are still nursing a grievance over the reconquest of Spain. Right on, brother: make sure you play "Give Peace a Chance" for them.
Instead of ridiculing Jack Layton's theories on how to achieve world peace, we should encourage our government to appoint Jack as special ambassador to the ME, and let him show us all how it can be done.
He sits safely in opposition, carping at us neo-nazis, and feigning sorrow over military casualties, while the enemy gain moral strength from his every word.
I intend to send a message to my MP, suggesting this idea, a "put up or shut up" scenario to our beloved little Lenin.
Sadly you know Jack represents a chunk of opinion in this country.
It is a deceptive message that the cartoon captures well...
The one truth in the Jack's message is that ultimately the Taliban wont go away until one of two things happen
1) The population rejects them, like the Shining Path in Peru
2) They join the process, like Northern Ireland
I'll let you decide which analogy fits them better, because each one dictates the tactics used to combat them. Jack clearly believes in scenario 2....
1) will take a long time for them to finally exhaust themselves, and that requires committment from the friends of Afghanistan to support and rebuild the country to a level of sustainability.
What worries me more is meddling from Pakistan and Iran. They wont let it settle.
But Jack is a fool, a peace deal with the Taliban is only temporary.
For over a year now support for the Afghanistan mission has hovered around 55% among Conservative supporters.
When you call Jack Layton a traitor, etc., you are calling 45% of the Conservative Party of Canada traitors, many of whom are actual conservatives, unlike the "war bunny" caucus of the CPC.
"""""When you call Jack Layton a traitor, etc., you are calling 45% of the Conservative Party of Canada traitors, many of whom are actual conservatives, unlike the "war bunny" caucus of the CPC.""""""
maybe you had better git a grip on the definition of conservative
Harper can shut up the entire opposition so easily...
All he has to do is offer to appoint Jack Layton, Gilles Duceppe, and Stephane Dion as special envoys. Offer them the chance to be sent over to Afghanistan for the purpose of "negotiating" a peace settlement - which they all claim can be done.
Tell them that if they can get concessions on beheading homosexuals (perhaps they could get the Taliban to agree to executing only one in three), stoning women, and amputating limbs of sinners, then Canada will pull out. Heck, Harper could offer to campaign on behalf of the NDP in the next election if Layton can get the Taliban to sign on to same-sex marriage.
Boom! Just like that the opposition will forever be on the defensive.
The cartoon caption is a quote from my favorite movie: "Mars Attacks". spoken by the US President (actor Jack Nicholson). The movie is a parody on liberal group think. I don't know how it got out of Hollywood.
Andrew, there may be many conservatives who have doubts about the mission, but that doesn't mean they're dumb enough to think the taliban can be reasoned with; that's purely a liberal sentiment.
Jack Layton . . . the "progressive" who will march in the gay parade but not a Cdn Army one, the mental moralist who is willing to let tens of thousands of Afghans die at the hands of an 13th century thugocracy just so he can be true to his no war beliefs . . . . where are the real Progressives, the sons & daughters of the Mac Paps, the ones who should be screaming at Layton that he is a skanky idiot not worth the price of admission ??
The surprising thing is that this cartoon appeared in the Oakville Beaver. That is, in a rather heavily left-leaning riding (although more liberal than dipper).
Regardless, I can't wait to see the upcoming Letters to the Editor to see who leaps to the defense of this doofus, in the name of "tolerance" and "Canadian Peacekeeping".
Layton is naive and idealistic. The only way to negotiate with the Taliban is to totally defeat them. That being the case, Canada alone is not capable of achieving this. Moreover, other NATO countries are not increasing their combat force contributions and support for the Taliban from Pakistan, Iran, Saudis, etc. is not being cut off.
This leaves Canada with only two options:
1. Carry on in this exercise of futility and hope that NATO and the US ramp up their efforts.
2. Leave.
lberia may very well be right, but the time to give up has not yet arrived. The likely consequences of our defeat in Afghanistan are pretty horrible. Once Bush is gone, the non-performing NATO nations may find it more politically possible to contribute when asked by President Clinton.
I would think that the last thing the Taliban would want to do is hurt Jack Layton. He's their best friend here, and virtually provides them with representation in Parliament.
You're assuming that the next US president will want to carry on with the current mission. The lack of overwhelming and obvious positive results in Afghanistan and Iraq has led to a lack of public support for this war (in my opinion it's really one war) in both the US and her allies. A change of tactics is required now, not a couple of years from now. The so called "Surge" in Iraq should have had added at least 150000 more troops, not 20000. Afghanistan needs at least 100000 more troops on the ground to have a chance at success. The funding and training for the terrorists must be cut off...Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are not really allies. Until this happens, we are pissing away the lives of our soldiers because there is no chance of success. I support our troops; I just question the wisdom of our political leaders.
lberia, even AQ doesn't think Iraq and Afghanistan is "really one war," so why should we? Certainly, from the perspective of Canadian involvement, it's not the case. I think your argument just facilitates the Bush/oil crap.
The US shouldn't have invaded Iraq on basis of 9/11. They did and now have to find a way to get out. Eventually, IMO, Hussein would have to have been decapitated, but 2003 was not that time.
Afghanistan is a completely different story. It was in reaction to an actual attack, unlike Iraq, and proved terrorist groups could plan and launch devastating attacks with the assistance of a nation state.
If we admit defeat and go home, the ball gets rolling again. AQ isn't going to stop because Canada withdraws. In fact, history shows that act of weakness could increase risk of domestic attack; AQ has been most successful when we left them alone. This isn't difficult to understand, given they want to attack us whether we disengage, like Clinton, or act overtly stupid, as Bush did. Either way they will go after the West; might as well degrade them.
Maybe our parliamentarians, especially the opposition, should consider ways we can show leadership and implore our allies to help create winning conditions (100,000 troops sounds about right), rather than wringing their hands, or massaging misinformation into talking points.

Speaking of the short bus I see that Jack Layton has distinguished himself on the international front by coming up with a solution for the Afghanistan situation. Jack is calling for peace talks with the Taliban. About time the NDP get back to their more loony roots. For a while there they were coming off all semi-sensible.
Rest assured if there are peace talks with the Taliban and Jack Layton The Mercer Report will be there! I've attended a lot of political events over the years and as a location I would suggest holding the talks in one of the ball rooms at the casino in Hull.
I think you might be able to smoke there and I'm guessing the Taliban would appreciate that. All the Taliban really require to have a good time is an ashtray and a few de-peopled women making sure there's a steady supply of unsafe drinking water.
Agenda for Historic Peace talks between Jack Layton and Taliban leader - room 202 Casino Du Lac Leamy, Quebec
8:00 am – Jack Layton opening comments and welcome to assembled media and Taliban representative.

8:08 am – Peace talks end.
8:10 am – Olivia Chow says she is "encouraged by talks" – announces plan to run for leadership of NDP.

"...even AQ doesn't think Iraq and Afghanistan is "really one war," so why should we?"
I agree that initially it wasn't, but in both countries the West is fighting against muslim terrorists whose goal is to establish a theocracy after kicking the west out. The recent prevelance of suicide bombing in Afghanistan demonstrates that similar tactics are being adopted to those used in Iraq.
We could publically implore our allies for greater participation, but it's debatable whether or not that would work. It would also be a public admission of weakness, and would look even worse if extra troops were not provided.
I think it's possible for us to leave without admitting defeat. Our NATO allies need to know that we are not going to do the heavy lifting indefintely, and this would force them to act either one way or the other. Canada is not in a position to win this war on it's own.

As regards your analyses that the "surge" should have had 150000 troops instead of 20000, with respect I disagree. My understanding is that the 20000 were what could comfortably be handeled by the current logistics and force protection units, in other words, all of the new troops can be used directly in offensive ground operations. Adding more would have led to having to greatly expand the logistics train ( where many of the allied casualities have occured) and siphoning off a significant number of the new troops to act as guards/sentries/garrison for the others ( force protection) when back in base. So the end result would have been maybe only 40000 front line forces and the other 110000 troops diverted to logistics/security.
Is 20000 enough? For Baghdad probablly yes; to act as a stiffener for the Iraqi forces? Yes; to establish long term (multi-year) control of all of Iraq's territory? No. But then that last option is not in the cards anyway.

We are weak, we don't have any trained extra troops to send ... our Generals are saying this, I have no reason to not believe them. If someone (or some nation) is shamed by their own capabilities ... change or live in shame.
The whole NATO thing - it's in the political arena. I have no idea what's going on behind closed doors. Someone (some leader) has to champion the political will ... if no one does, the result isn't even debatable.

Jack just likes giving people the benefit of the
doubt... like this guy.
Sejad Mekic, the imam at the Cambridge mosque
which Abdullah also attended, gave a sermon on
Friday condemning all acts of terror.
However, he later said he had doubts that the
incident at Glasgow airport was a terrorist attack,
saying it could have been a car accident.
"I still haven't made my conclusion," he said.
When it was pointed out that containers of
petrol were reportedly found in the car, he said:
"Maybe they used to sell petrol."
